i think if u r looking at small and something like a lapdog, try pomeranian, pug, pekingnese, lhasa apso, shih tzu. maltese can be a lot of work due to the coat. miniature poodle can also be consider as they are easy to train, not sure if they are barker. one small dog i really like but not sure if u can get in malaysia is the affenpinscher, it's very active but very cute! for small dogs with attitude, then miniature pinscher, it's a good watch dog. but these dogs are used for deaf people in the USA as their bark is quite high pitch. not good if u r staying in an apartment. more laidback small dogs and seldom bark are pug. beagles is a no no, it is definetely not a lapdog. it's highly active and it will howl like a wolf when it gets bored which can be annoying. u have to spend a lot of time with him so that he is happy. jack russell terriers are also a no no, JRT are consider big dogs in a small body. beagle/daschund/basset hound belongs to the hound group. if u r looking for a mutt, try a shih tzu mix, i think these are very popular. but it's harder to train a mutt as u will have to really look on what is the mix and the characteristics of the different dog.
