Hello Can't Post

Hi all,

I am so glad to stumble upon this forum. I just adopted a 4 months old Labrador Retriever named Bailey as of last weekend and am looking to meet fellow dog lovers who can share tips and pointers on raising a dog. Currently I am residing in an apartment in Taman Desa and am glad to know that there is an obedience class just down the road from where I live. Unfortunately the previous owner of my puppy did not see fit to complete her vaccination so she is slightly behind on her vaccination schedule. I have bought books on puppy training as well as surfing the net on training techniques for dogs and have tried out their techniques. So far, she is a pretty fast learner and after 3 days of training she knows how to sit, lie down, stay. I managed to toilet train her within a day! Amazing... Initially I used newspaper but I found it really messy as she likes to tear the newspaper into bits especially when I am away at work. I placed the newspapers on top of the water drainage outlet in the bathroom. Since I have removed the newspapers, she knows how to go to water drainage outlet to pee. So it is easier for me to just wash away the pee with water. So far, touch wood there has been no accidents in my apartment. I keep to a routine and she gets her walks every morning and evening.. and i have been sleep deprived :-) but it is so worth it! On Monday my heart broke into pieces as she was barking and whining her heart out when I went to work. So did my research and found out a tip on how to house train her to stop barking. I tried it out on Monday night and amazingly, yesterday morning as I left for work her barking decreased tremendously. I also bought her a Kong toy and she loved it. Am looking forward to meeting fellow dog owners soon (as soon as she completes her vaccination) so that I can teach Bailey how to socialise.

Hello everyone,

It is so nice to feel welcome in this forum. I can see that people here are genuinely nice. I am so looking forward to meeting all of you in person. Unfortunately I am not able to make it to the dog training this weekend as I have classes to attend at the same time which is at 5pm every Sundays. I am considering of training Bailey by myself first during her puppy stage. I did call up MKA on their puppy classes but they are unable to tell me the precise date for the new classes. Does anyone know of any other organisation that has dog training classes on a Sat? I have seen some dogs in training along a plot of land which is located off Jalan Ampang (near the Selangor Polo Club) but am unable to locate a contact number. Have been searching the net but still no answer. Does anyone know about this? If I really cannot find any dog training classes on a Saturday, then I think i will have no choice but to put my classes on hold for 10 weeks and let Bailey have her training first.

Re: [jeeyin] Hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jeeyin,

Bailey was quite naughty today but managed to calm her down before I left for work. I am at a dilemma. My class is equally as important to me as Bailey. But due to the short time to sign up for the puppy class (missed the deadline), I will try the classes organised by MKA which starts next month.

I bought a book from MPH on puppy training entitled "Guide to Raising a Puppy" under the Keep It Simple Series. It is an excellent guide as it has pictures and very easy to understand instructions. Even a novice like me can understand it. I tried teaching Bailey to catch a Frisbee yesterday . She knows how to run after it, touch the frisbee with her paws and run back to me. Now I have to teach her to pick it up.

She drives me nuts by overtuning her water bowl on a regular basis. I am considering of buying a very heavy water bowl so that she cannot overturn it but the ones that are heavy are all made of porcelain and I am so afraid she will be able break it into pieces... How did you stop your dog from overturning the water bowl?

SInce we stay quite near to each other , do you use the vet located along 3rd Mile Old Klang Road?. I find their prices expensive. I called them up yesterday and I compared prices with another vet in Ukay Heights, Ampang which is much cheaper. I normally spend weekends in Ampang with BF so the vet in Ukay is just as convenient.

We should meet up and let our dogs meet. Bailey definitely need to socialise with dogs. She is now famous in my condo because I sent a letter to every resident in my block (with Bailey as the author) to apologise for and ask them to bear with Bailey's barking during the day until she is fully trained. I feel it is necessary as I do not want to upset my neighbours nor make them think I am a terrible owner. the best part is that all the Japanese kids love her. Every evening when I take her out for walks around the condo, they will come up to her and pat her.

Re: [Bailey] Hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there !!! I think you are taking the responsbility as a dog owner very seriously and that's very good !! Cheers for you !! I'm sure all residents in ur condo will understand ur situation and will tolerate Bailey !!! Smile

Yup, i bring my lab, goldie to the vet called polyclinic or something...the one quite near to the petrol station. Well, i've actually visited 3 clinics including this one...and i find that this is the cheapest..Ppl and doctors there are very helpful and friendly...well, regarding the price....not too sure lah...probably it's becoz i've never tried other vets before, except for the ones near my house~~Tongue It's good that u can find a cheaper clinic for Bailey.

The water bowl stuff has happened to goldie before !! Exactly the same !! At first, i gave him the stainless steel bowl...and he drank the water and looked like such a good boy !!! But 2 seconds later...he started playing with the water in the bowl....so i changed to a heavy porcelain bowl...then felt so happy coz i was sure goldie wun be able to turn the bowl upside down..........but........he turned the bowl upside down in 5 minutes time and started chewing the bowl.......Pirate M"Uahahaha...and i finally solve the problem now....went to 1 pet shop in Brickfield and bought a stainless steel bowl that can be locked at a place....er...difficult to describe to u...but i can assure that this will definitely work..coz my extremely hyper goldie is still using it till now...Sly

YEah...dogs need socialization...like goldie..when i brought him for training everyweek....he was okie...not too excited when he sees other ppl...but now finish training...go out less...so when i bring him for a walk...he gets very excited easily when he sees other ppl passing by...

When i first threw something for goldie to catch...he too stopped at the toy and then ran back to me....but now he will bring the toy back to me.....but er...only 1 specific toy...when i tried another toy...he ignored them Crazy Probably something wrong with my teaching method...kekek...will try again next time.

U have any problems when bathing or cleaning Bailey ??

Hi...

I'm elaine and this is my dog Rufus...he is a maltese without fur.

I saw that you were asking about the 3rd mile vet. they are very popular around Old klang road...cause very visible. My friend's terrier frequent's there like around once every 2 months...to clip nails, clean ears, clean backside (clear some sack or something like that) and trim fur...these whole procedure would cost them RM35....i think its because frequent customer. So i guess long run it is quite reasonable.

Then about sickness and prob...well one vet is very popular there. He has manage to save Woofie (the terrier) from kidney infection.

For Water containers...I use those feeder bottles...therefore Rufus just licks from the stainless steel mouthpiece. He likes it because it makes some clicking sound and also the water is fresh. Not messy and can ensure that the water is clean as it is covered. maybe you can shop around for that and seek advise from the pet shop sales personnels. If Bailey has a metal crate...can just attach it to the crate.

Playing fetch...maybe you can try bones/bone shape toys. Easy to pick up...frisbee must catch when its still airborne...if its on the ground too flat to pick up easily. Also use treats to attract Bailey to comeback to you and release the bone. My mum played tug of war with him when Rufus brings it back...bad idea leh..cause now he dun like to release the bone till he is satisfied with playing tug of war.

Re: [tomaz] Hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Tomaz,

Actually it was easier than I thought. On the first day when she barked like crazy, I surfed the net and came upon this website http://www.dogbreedinfo.com . Have a look at it as it has good pointers. She is normally the quietest in the evenings and that is after her walk in the park. So, what I did was to put her in her enclosure during the night (I dont use a crate as I rather she has a place to run around so I let her use my kitchen, back bathroom and the wet area) and I will go up to her every hour or so and give her a pat and a treat that tell her that she is a good girl. I have been doing it every night. I saw an immediate change.. My brother who is currently staying with me and is now in between jobs will report to me about her behaviour. And that is how I know that she does not bark at all. All you have to do is to reassure your dog that you will return. So far, touch wood my tactic has worked. Plus I switch on the radio when I go to work and lots of bones and some toys to chew. She likes her squeaky duck toy which she will throw and step on it to make the noise.. so cute when I see her play by herself :-) Now I also allow her to walk all over my condo as I notice what she wants most is a cuddle when I am watching the telly. I have given her her very own pillow to lie on and she now lies down on the pillow to chew her bone while watching telly with me. Generally she is quite easy to train but she definitely lacks attention span. Now am teaching her how to heel, stop, wait, shake and watch me.

Now she is into biting her leash and her harness before i take her for a walk. I tried dipping it in vinegar and sadly it does not work. Do you have any methods how to stop this?

Re: [jeeyin] Hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi JeeYin,

I finally solved the problem I had with Bailey who keeps overturning her water bowl. I decided to put her bowl in a wire rack that I have at the wet area. She does not do it anymore. I have also purchased the water dispenser thingy with the ball bearing but somehow for a smart dog Bailey can be quite bodoh. I tried smearing some food around the ball bearing so that she can lick them but she does not like it one bit. Sigh..

The good thing is that I have absolutely no problem bathing Bailey. SHe knows how to stand still and not move. I know she enjoys it tremendously. Don't even need to bribe her . But I cannot get her to sit still to clean her ears especially when I put the ear drops for her. She hates it but loves the ear massage. SO what I normally do is to distract her by massaging her ears and at the same time put in the ear drops. So far so good.

Hello Bailey and the master,

Welcome to the forum and great to have you with us here too. bailey is such a pretty girl. I used to have one black lab too. I named her Marnie. U know what, lab tend to be more ob than beagle. They are much easier to train but do get them toys for passing their time if not they will chew on anything that's in the house. Lab will grow very big. Wouldn't it be very crowded for her to live in an apartment type????

Now currently my girl is lil Coco, a beagle of 9 mths old now.

Hi Coco and owner,

I gave some thought about the space restriction before I adopted Bailey. I have seen another family in my same block having a Golden. I did some research and I found out that Labs will do ok in an condo/apartment provided they are given sufficient exercise. When I am around I let Bailey walk around my condo. So that is why I diligently take my Bailey out for walks and runs in the park morning and night every day. I also plan to shift into a house but need some time to rearrange finances. I already own my current condo and dont want to buy another property so fast.

Well, if you really bringing Bailey out every day for exercise then it shldn't be any problem. But do bear in mind, they tend to vandalise when they r so boring. I still remember what Marnie did to my car. Overnite she nearly swallow my car!!CrazyPirate hehehe. But other than that they r a good listener and fast learner too.

Ya lor, owing a property is hard nowadays especially landed one. Are you gonna send Bailey to school?

hi bailey,

good to hear that your lab have do not give you too much problem. guess she didn't bark is because you ler her roam free in your condo, and she is enjoying it. Tongue she seeks attention also.

the leash and harness, puppies sure will bite. that is because they are changing teeth, so they need something to bite. another reason could be that they are still puppies, they hate being on leash, but if they are doing something such as walking, running, they would forgot about biting. hope this help you. Yeah..i think for long run, the clinic in old klang road is worth it...coz for my last visit, they din charge me for consultation fee...only charge me for the medicine.....

I used to use feeder bottle too...but goldie loved to bite the mouthpiece and i think the mouthpiece spoilt because of his biting....sigh...

Hi to Bailey and her mum,

Well....dun think bailey is bodoh..hahaha..probably she's not used to it...give her some more time, she'll try using it sooner or later...

So, do u mean that u use the ear drops which we can drip it directly into their ears ?? Is it effective ? Will they really shake all dirt out by themselves ?? Somebody introduced this method to me..but i'm not sure whether it works or not...do u still use a cotton bud to clean the dirt inside ??

Good to hear the bailey likes bathing...well, goldie likes playing with water but not bathing...i wonder why...he'll keep turning here and there, standing and sometimes jumping up and down when i bath him...sigh...Unsure

Er, i got a tip from a trainer last time. She told me to use a small part of the leash to hit his head, a gentle one but enough to make a whipping sound. The trainer said that dogs are afraid to whipping sound. I tried it before, it worked for a few times, but after that....useless..Crazy , probably he's used to the whipping sound.

Re: [jeeyin] Hello [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi JeeYin,

I am applying ear drops to Bailey cos I found out from the vet last weekend that she has ear mites in her ears. that is why I see her scratching her ears all the time with her paws until one ear is redder than the other. I still use cotton pads to clean her ears to remove the dirty stuff and Bailey loves the sensation when I dig her ears with the cotton. I went to the vet in Ukay Animal Centre. I liked the vet and the staff in there cos they were all very nice and friendly and charges are reasonable. And the vet handled Bailey in a very gentle manner. So I am quite pleased with them. Intend to stick to them cos I am always in BF's place on the weekends in Ampang. But then I found out last weekend that the guards in my BF's condo barred me from entering the place with Bailey -I may have to go elsewhere :-( You can read my incident which I have posted on Dog Friendly Places.

I notice that Bailey is more subservient toward my brother and BF.. Hmmmph.. I will have to do something drastic to establish myself as the leader of the pack if not.. I will have a problem training her as she is getting more wilful by the day. Now I make her sit and wait everytime I go though any doorways, or up and down the stairs. I used to let her go first as it is easier to hold the door open and let bailey go in first but I think that is backfiring on me as she treats me like an equal.
