Just a story for all.... Can't Post

Hi! I am new to this forum. Been following closely the messages posted here and I truly find it very informative as well as entertaining. Hence I decided to sign up....

Well, I own a pug which I bought from a local pet store when she was 4 months old. My first reaction when I saw her was: "Way too skinny for a 4-month girl" But I bought her anyway. There must be somethin with that look Smile

In the first two weeks she was fine and then her appetite slowed. When I took her for her third jab I noticed a few pimples on her head. My VET told me it's just pimples. Then those red bumps started to multiply. A week later I took her to the VET and I was told my poor girl (Sidnee) had fungal infection. I was told to bring her in for fungal wash once a week. I did that for 3 consecutive weeks and I noticed that now she had bald spots and worse still, those patches turned black! All these while, I was told 2 words "It's Fine"

To cut a long story short, I got a second opinion. Guess what? Generalised demodectic mange... T-cells problematic. Before I had her I did some research on my own and correct me if I am wrong. T-cells defective dogs shouldn't be breed rite?

Now I have to feed my lil girl medicine 2X a day. The look in her eyes breaks my heart. Fortunately she is still okay now and gradually I notice an increase in her appetite.

But I am so frustrated - not at my poor girl of course. But just wondering... how could ppl be so irresponsible? Dogs they may be, but like human they also are capable of loving and feeling, they deserve to be loved not treated like some money churning animals.

Sorry about that... but I gues sI just had to let that out.Tongue

Hi wlaiwan,

I wish I could do more than just tell you how sorry I am to hear about your pug's condition. I dont know anything about t-cells and I can only imagine how heartbreaking it must be for you. Are you able to share with us from which petshop you bought your pug from, at least the location? Does the petshop have a refund policy if the dog is found to be unhealthy? Though it may not be the petshop's fault, it would be good for forum members to know the type of petshop owners we're dealing with.

I wish you and your pug well. Regards.

Re: [wlaiwan] Just a story for all.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I can totally relate 100 % of what you feel and experienced. If you go thru my post on Sunnie's condition in this forum, you'll get what I mean. I went to 5 vets (One of them is an eye specialist for dogs) and the eye specialist said that my girl was diagnosed with glaucoma and corneal ulcers. Glaucoma is a serious disease that will cause blindness within a short time. I was told by my vet that it is very rare for a puppy at 3 months old to suffer from a disease like that, so most likely, the problem was inherited. WHen I went back to confront my breeder, he revealed to me that sunnie's mother was having eye problems when he bought her back from the pet shop, and he said she recovered after giving her eye gel. I was furious because he didn't let me know when I first bought SUnnie.

I swear I wanted to fight for justice for Sunnie and to stop him from breeding other dogs further. But now, I guess the more important thing for me to do is to take good care of Sunnie and make sure I won't breed Sunnie for the sake of the next generation.

I spent all my money, energy and emotions on SUnnie for the past three months. Sunnie is now one of the luckiest dog in Malaysia, I cook her meals everyday and give her the best human grade supplements I could find. She's allergic to a lot of things so I have to carefully monitor her diet and try not to let her eat processed foods for now because I am not sure of what effects the preservatives and additives have on her. (even though the dog food companies claim their kibble is "chemicals free") I've stopped all her vet medication because she seemed to be getting worse on those. She's now on alternative therapies (herbal remedies, good bacteria, supplements) and being treated by my personal doctor. Sunnie is a lot better now and much happier. She also gained 600g in 3 weeks time.

I understand how you feel about the irresponsible breeders...but right now it's more important to get her back on her health. Just try your best. I was on the verge of giving up hope on Sunnie, becuz the vets said "imminent blindness". I was very depressed and didn't know what to do. I was also at the junction where I (and other people around me) even considered to put her down. But now she's still running around and responding well to my training sessions, very much alive and agile and is the best thing in my life now. Even though she has not fully recovered but she's progressing well. Most importantly, she's happy.

Take it as a lesson and I guess all we could do is to be more careful when we select our next puppies. And we should educate ourselves as responsible and caring pet owners and demand only healthy puppies. If the market is more educated and only demands healthy puppies, the pet shops (or breeders) hopefully will understand that unhealthy puppies will not be wanted. Not sure if I carry this message throu well enough...We as dog owners should do more than keeping dogs, we should also educate other people about choosing a healthy puppy and where to find responsible breeders and pet shops.

I am not sure if I am here to offer you any advice on your dog's prescription, but if you would like to adopt an alternative approach, you can email me at cyphang@pd.jaring.my. I can try asking my doctor (she's a doctor for humans, not dogs though, but she has used the same approach on her pets and other animals) if you need a different opinion.

Hope your dog gets well soon. We're here for her. Sunnie wishes her speedy recovery !
With warm regards,

Re: [cyphang] Just a story for all.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks a lot for those who shared their experiences. I bought Sidnee from a pet store in KL. They have a refund policy. But I love my doggy too much to actually trade her in again so I thought I'd just bear with it. Meanwhile I just hope she'd recover soon. Come to think of it, I just don't know whom I should hold responsible for this unfortunate incident. The VET or the breeder???

Anyway, now I have to get up much earllier to spend time with her, feed her, then give her medication and rub ointment on her. I also play with her again before I leave for work and this I have to do twice everyday. The medicine she was prescribed must be very bitter (from her reaction). Now, she doesn't want to eat much. I noticed this since yesterday, and she's not even drinking her milk (her favourite). My fear is that she will keep losing weight...Frown

I read somewhere in this forum that mixing some yummy things like cheese or chicken meat will help. I tried that before (some 2 months ago). Initially it worked but then after a week or so she will turn away from the food. Any other suggestion?

Hi ashley

Thank you very much. Sidnee will be very touched to know she has so many friends who cares for her. Yes, I took her to another vet and I am still keeping my fingers crossed. Hoping everything will be fine. She's a strong girl, she'll hang on there Smile

Warmest Regards

Re: [wlaiwan] Just a story for all.... [In reply to] Can't Post

hello wlaiwan,

My dog was sick quite some time ago and doctor recommended 'cream cheese' as the alternative to feed him...it's easy..you just have to put kibbles in the bowl and then put in two spoonful (this is my own recommendation) of cream cheese..of course mix it all together...according to the doctor,it's good for weight gain and also for a dog that's recuperating from any sickness...ah,and you mentioned that she's keen on drinking milk..so I think cream cheese is also a good choice....

Another option is by mixing her kibbles with yogurt....it depends on your dog's preference sincerely...but for me,strawberry is definitely a good add on...

wish you luck...and keep us updated...

Hi strawhoney

These days sidnee is not too keen on milk anymore. not sure why, but she's a very picky dog. Currently I am mixing chicken/fish & beef/fish with her kibbles. Then I add a stick of baby carrot. She is still okay, not sure if she will get tired of it eventually.

Okay, I'll go get her some cheese cream for her tomorrow. Thanks a lot :>
