Re: [Koogiebus] Really NEED HELP! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

To be able to give suggestions ... need to know a little more ...

(a) Where does your dog spend most of its time? ... Indoor? ... Outdoor? ... Where does she sleep?

(b) Who spends the most time with your dog? And how much time? ... Is the dog often left alone? If so how often and for how long?

(c) Do you have a garden? If so how big is the garden? ... Do you take your dog for walks? If so how often and how long is the walk?

Who suggested that you get a muzzle (mask) for your dog?

Cheers Smile

surchinmy,

I'm really going to enjoy this but for the benefit of the doubt this sounded like a very sincere question so I'll leave u to do the talking. I'll do the spectator job for a change.Smile

Koogiebus,

Surchinmy is the best person to guide u on this. There are many things u need to do here but wait up for surchinmy.Smile See how and I may just come in later when things are up and dandy.

Re: [Koogiebus] Really NEED HELP! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

I believe that your answers provide the reason (or a major portion of the reason) why your almost adult Beagle is barking ...

First ... all dogs bark ... it is natural for dogs to bark ... dogs bark to communicate with other dogs and with their owners ... dogs bark when they are nervous ... when they are afraid ... when they are stressed ... when they are hungry ... when they hear or see something new (sometimes when they hear or see something old) ... when they seek attention ... when they are happy ... and for each there will be a slightly different bark ...

If you spend enough time with your dog, you will start to notice and understand the difference ...

Many dogs also start to bark more when the get older and mature ... and become more aware of the world around them ...

The Beagle as a breed may tend to bark more than other breeds ... Afterall they were bred as pack hounds, and bred to communicate with the rest of the pack during a hunt with barks ...

Also because they are pack hounds, Beagles do not like being left alone (they like *surprise, surprise* being in a pack!!!) ... and because they are actual hounds and not toy dogs - Beagles also need a fair amount of exercise ...

... I suspect that your Beagle is barking because it is bored to tears ... Smile ...

There are ways to train a dog not to bark or not to bark so much ... but I believe that trying to determine the root cause of a behaviour is better than just trying to train a behaviour out of a dog ... especially when it's something as instinctive as barking ...

If a dog is bored ... what else can the dog do except bark?

If your dog is not socialised and exposed to new situations and environments ... then it's also not so surprising that your dog barks at everything and every chance it gets ...

It is perhaps wrong perception to think that dogs exist solely for their human owners' benefit and will therefore do what the owner wishes or desires ...

Dogs are living entities with their own instincts, behaviour pattens and needs ...

I would strongly suggest the following:

(a) First thing ... I don't know what your circumstances are like but I do hope you are not crating your dog for 10 hours a day while you are at work ...

If someone did that to you - you would bark too!!!

You should consider creating more space for your dog ... with toys to play with ... so that she has a little more freedom and chance to at least entertain herself ... and is not so pent up with being crated for so long ... Crating a dog for more than 2 or 3 hours a day is not healthy for the dog ...

(b) Start a basic trainning programme with your dog ... everyday ... say 20minute sessions ... just basic sit, stay and recall ... Then follow that up with a short walk, say ... another 20minutes (if possible more) ...

More than just training your dog ... you will be bonding with her. And when you go for walks, you will be exposing her to new sounds, sights and smells ... The more comfortable a dog is with the environment - the less a dog is likely to bark.

(c) Try and do at least one (preferrably 2) short walks a day ... rather than one long walk a week (that is simply not enough) ... The walks will be good for you too - exercise is great for Beagles and their owners ... otherwise both will get fat ... Tongue ...

(d) I hope you have not been placing the muzzle on your dog for 10 hours a day ... Please remove that muzzle (maybe you can place it on your friend instead) ... It's natural for dogs to bark ... And placing a muzzle just causes more frustration for your dog ...

(e) And finally ... if you can ... try and get your dog out on weekends to meet other dogs and also give yourself a chance to meet other doggie people ... There is a Beagle group in the forum ... why not join them and see if you can meet up ... It will do you and your dog good ...

Cheers Smile

Re: [Koogiebus] Really NEED HELP! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kurt, welcome. Glad to have another Beagler aboard. Your avatar looks like you have an army of Beagles or is that how she sounds when she barks, heheheh. Surchinmy is right, forget the muzzle. Beagles are so friendly the worst they will do is lick you to death. And it wont stop the barking, anyway.

It is strange but I seem to have rather quiet Beagles. My guess is that they get enough exercise, have toys to chews, space to live in and each others company. In fact I exercise them quite a lot and hell breaks loose if for some reason I cant take them out. If you are very busy, I would suggest you take her out for 15 minutes to sniff around, in the morning before work and another 30 minutes for a nice walk in the evenings. I even sneak my puppies into the tennis court to run around for a while if it is unoccupied, heheheh. Well, at least one hour without any barking when they are panting away, hahahah. Seriously, Beagles are very active dogs and need an outlet for all that energy.

Do you stay in a condo? Actually a garden isn't necessary, I think. You cant leave them there cos they may get stolen, they probably would turn the garden into a quarry if you do and you need to take them out anyway. But it would be ideal if they had some living space. It may not be a good idea to let her roam freely when you are out cos Beagles are avid chewers especially when bored. Maybe you can leave her in a dog-proofed room or a fenced corner. Mine are in the indoor garden where they can stretch their legs without causing any damage. Good luck, J

Re: [Koogiebus] Really NEED HELP! [In reply to] Can't Post

Koogiebus,

Surchinmy had gone overboard(its a compliments) in listing his comments and he surely does not leave me any more room to write...lolTongue

What he says is very true and I do think that you need to spend more time with your beagle. They are a very playful n energetic breed and 10 hours in crate alone is not a very kind thing to do for any dog breed as a matter of fact. At the worst scenario u should spend time with him before you go to work perhaps a good morning walkies and a good evening OB session with hard play will help building the bond greatly as well as expend his locked up energy. This will help solve alot of your problem.

Again about the muzzle, it is about the funniest thing I have ever heard being put on a beagle......short of giving me the impression that it was ......Beware of a killer beagle of elm street...Dont mean to belittle anyone and I believe you did that out of thought that it will cure ...something... but this just goes to demonstrate that everyone claims to be having the experience and knowledge yet only very few that can execute them well with the right understanding. So u must be careful with such advice which makes no logic sense at all.

This is the right place for you to be where u can get a sincere advice to a sincere questions. Generally what u get here is as close to informed logical advice since nin-com-poop writings will get alot of bashing in an open public forum like this. Welcome and learn all u can.Smile

Hi PSD, is there such a killer Beagle? My 2 Beagles are so adorable, even the stray cats are not afraid of them, sigh. Fortunately, I keep indoors so any intruder cant see what monsters are barking from inside, hahahaha. Especially since I have a 'Awas Anjing Garang' sign with a fierce GSD drawing, on my gate post. Best regards,J

Hi PSD, sorry for the slow reply. I was away for a few days and also took some time to educate myself a bit about protection training by surfing on the subject. Wow, it blew my mind. Looks like fun but I have to back down from accepting your kind offer. Very much appreciated gesture but I figure it best to keep my puppies sweet since I have children around them who may not know how to handle them if they get better trained. Hahaha, have to train the humans first. Anyway, we (2 children and I) are progressing to teach the puppies DOWN. Best regards,J
