Ridgeback that needs Discpline Can't Post

Hi, my puppy of 6 months is a ridgeback mixed with a boxer, an odd combination really... anyway, for some time now, we've been patiently trying to calm him down. He is extremly hyper and bitey due to his 'ridegebackness'. Up till recently i've sent him to see a dog trainer. and he suggested i be strict towards the dog.

This morning, i belive my puppy was trying to get back on me. So he laid down on his back whining pretending to be in pain. And when i tried to pat him, he bite my hand and dragged me around. This is the last straw for me. Are there any other ways other than pulling his choker chain ? My puppy needs discplining or else, i'm forced to send him away to a factory.

please help.

Before attempting to make reply, some questions please ...

(a) What kind of Ridgeback? Thai or Rhodesian?

(b) Are you a first time dog owner? ... If so, do you have a dog training book or manual? Author/Title?

(c) How much time do you spend with your pup on a daily basis?

(d) Have you started basic training with the dog? ... If so, what stage are you at? ... What have you done so far to "calm" the pup down?

(e) How long was the pup with the trainer? What did the trainer dog with the dog? What does the trainer mean by being more "strict"?

(f) When your pup "bit" you ... did the pup break skin & draw blood?

Cheers Smile

Alright.. sorry i sounded dumb... uhm..

a) it's mother is a thai ridgeback, father's a boxer
b) no i've had 1 dog before, but it was ran over... my dad had 1 dog, my 1st brother had 1 and my 2nd brother had 1 too.. 2 were put to sleep. one was ran over too...
b)i) i've ran through on ridgeback, they are much tougher to discpline/ trained. but it's possible..
c) hhmm tough one.. i spend rather alot of hours with it...
d) calming him down such as, comand sit, and pat him... doesn't work mostly.. he kinda.. bites me then and there.. especially after i eat without feeding him first... :(
e) it was with it only like 1 hour or so... the trainer dragged my dog around with the choker chain... it was suppose to break the dog's stubborness... helped a wee bit when i brought him home that day..
f) nope, not this time.... i hope this is just a phase of his teething... and it won't continue on..

Re: [huizhi] Ridgeback that needs Discpline [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

(A) Sorry ... a person who drags a dog around on a choke chain hoping to to "break" the dog's "stuborness" ... is NOT a dog trainer ... he many be many other things (I have lots of names for people like that) ... but dog trainer isn't one of them ...

A good trainer never ever tries to "break" a dog ... or a horse ... or a cat ... whatever ... A good trainer works with the animal, with understanding and knowledge ... and teaches the animal that which is required ...

(B) As for a Boxer/Thai Ridgeback ... you do have an interesting mix ...

Boxers are playful & exuberant and tend to retain their puppy-like nature well into maturity ... While a Thai tends towards independance and requires patient handling ... So, on the training side, you will have a handful, but at the same time - never forget that there are many positive qualities to both the Boxer and the Thai Ridgeback ... They are both loyal and protective of family & home.

www.boxer-dog.org/item/9

By the way ... no dog is impossible to train ... and dogs are far easier to train than people ... Tongue ... As another forum member is fond of saying, there are no bad dogs only bad owners.

(C) If you do spend a lot of time with your dog, then I think is very unlikely that your dog is attempting to bite you. It sounds more like he is just mouthing and being playful ...

However that said ... you need to start training and teaching your dog what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour ...

And if your training sessions so far, have not been so successful ... then chances are, the problem is not so much with the dog but your present training methods/techniques ...

I'll most definitely suggest that you get yourself a good dog training book or find a doggie person to help you to start training your dog in the proper manner ...

For more information ... check out the threads here ...

The key to effective training lies in the owner aquiring the requisite knowledge and understanding of the dog and dog behaviour ... and then to exhibit patience and consistency ... There is no short cut. We cannot hope to teach our dog discipline unless we first acquire discipline ourselves.

And if your dog is anything like his Thai Ridgeback ancestors, then your dog will also require extensive socialisation.

All the best Smile

Re: [surchinmy] Ridgeback that needs Discpline [In reply to] Can't Post

Hhmm... alright... maybe i used the wrong choice of words... what the trainer did really wasn't dragging it around, it was rather encouraging my dog to obey the trainer... there's no other words to describe the situation correctly. But the advise the trainer gave has been helpful. Now my dog only disobey me when i don't have a lead. Not good huh.

i've been through the sites you've posted, but thanks anyway. It's harder to find thai ridgeback's information such as how to train it.. but so far i've faith that it's possible.. someday just have to be more strict i guess..

Yeah it's a very interesting mix... especially since after the mating, the TR tried to snap the boxer.. :\ gave the boxer some scars to remember her by.. poor thing...

Alright thanks for your advise... no more extra treats for my dog anymore! : )

thanks again ! will post when i succeed in properly training him

Re: [huizhi] Ridgeback that needs Discpline [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

Well ... as far as I know ... Thai Ridgeback or a Thai Ridgeback mix don't require any "special" kind of training ... and for sure its possible to train a Thai Ridgeback mix ... just that with more independant breeds (or stubborn breeds, depending on how one views the situation) ... there are certain methods that seem to work better than others ...

For example: With independant type breeds ...

(a) Praise & reward methods seem to work well, independant breeds tend not to respond so positively to pulling and tugging ... personally, I find the clicker method works real good with independant-minded breeds such as hounds and spitz type dogs ...

(b) Keep training sessions short and upbeat ... avoid too many repitions ... and end session on a high note ... better to have several short sessions rather than one long session ...

(c) There is possibly greater need to be more innovative, make training fun, teach through play rather than formal type training sessions ... etc etc ...

Why no more treats? The giving of treats is by itself not an issue ... the key is knowing when to give and when not to give treats.

As I mentioned previously ... get a good training manual and if you can a good dog behaviour book ...

Cheers & good luck ... Smile

Re: [huizhi] Ridgeback that needs Discpline [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Sir/Madam,

You mentioned that your puppy is a ThaiRidgeback mix mother Thai, father boxer... that's interesting....

I have a thai ridgeback dog and he was a REAL handful when I had him. But we love him so much that at the end I learnt so much about taking care of a potentially detructive dog.

He virtualty will destoy everything he can get his mouth on...

1) My car

2) My electric door (he took out the entire wiring system unearthed...thank god he is okay)

3) My curtains

4) My shoes

5) My wooden door (he tried to bite through it)

6) My tap outside

7) My astro cabel

Just when you thought you've won.... one time I surrounded my cables with cactus, he found a way to move the plants without getting hurt...

At the end of it all, i believe once you decide to keep a dog you have to adjust your living to accomodate him... just like a new member to the family. Nowadays except for his toys, my compound i keep NOTHING, i dun even park my car inside...

Problem solved...

A Thai ridgeback needs a lot of attention... i walk him twice everyday... He is such a good dog now... he went for obidience training, he has grown so much he is such a beautiful boy...

My wife and I love him so much despite it all... cos i dun believe he's a bad dog, just that's maybe how thai ridgeback behaves...needs a lot of dicipline and time.

Can you provide me with your email? Would love to find out more about your dog... my email is

Thks and good luck.
