Sunnie's condition - thanks to those who have offered me help Can't Post

My girl, Sunnie been having some serious problems with her eyes. After seeing two vets, she was diagnosed with corneal ulcers. I took her to the UPM vet hospital yesterday for third opinion as she seems to get worse. She is also having behavioral problems, barking a lot, biting a lot (painfully too) and gets irritated and fierce when triggered, possibly due to her eye problems. She was not like this when I brought her back 3 or 4 weeks ago. The vet at UPM has made an appointment with their eye specialist for dogs today because Sunnie could be sufferring more than corneal ulcers, she could be having glaucoma, a serious eye condition which could lead to blindness or removal or rupture of the eyes if not healed. Could only find out about her exact condition today in the afternoon. Sunnie has to fast this morning onwards (no food or water) for a series of medical checkup. I could not help but being worried and panic. Just want to say thanks to those who has been very supportive and trying to help, especially Boon, Lisa Chew and Elly. It's going to be a hard time for me in these few weeks. Without you guys here it would have been much more difficult to cope with this situation. Thanks again.
With warm regards,
CY Phang

Thanks for all your concern and kind words. The mummy just have to stay strong to face all these challenges. It's difficult because she is the first puppy that I own all by myself. Will keep you guys posted of her condition. I may have to face some rough times today at the hospital and to make tough decisions soon.

Re: [melanie] Sunnie's condition - thanks to those who have offered me help [In reply to] Can't Post

I took Sunnie to the eye specialist today at the UPM vet hospital. Sunnie is diagnosed with both corneal ulcers and glaucoma in both eyes. Both her eyes have very high internal pressure and are bulging out. The doctor said the possibility of getting blind is very high and she asked me to be mentally prepared to put her down if I am not prepared to take care of a blind dog. Surgery is going to be very costly and complicated (I can't afford it with my financial status right now) and she may not even make it becuz she's still a puppy. Or I can also choose to have her eye balls removed. This is very depressing news but I was mentally prepared for it becuz yesterday another vet mentioned something about that when I asked her what the worst complications would be.

The specialist suggested now that I put her on glaucoma eye drops and some antibiotics and other medication for a few days and see her progress...I really hope miracles will happen....SHe's warded in the hospital right now...as they would like to monitor her and I am not at home in the day...It costs me RM 12 a day for warding. WHen I came home today and looked at her empty crate....I felt so overwhelmed and just couldnt control my tears....Poor Sunnie....

The doctor said its not common for shih tzus to have glaucoma at this young age...so it's very possibly congenital, i.e. she's born with it...

Thanks for all ur concern...really appreciate it.

I guess I could only decide what to do next after the next few days...
With warm regards,

Dear CY,

Me and Sharon plus all our furkids (the schnauzer gang) are so sorry to hear the bad news on Sunnie's condition. At this point, you have done all you can do for Sunnie.. Do not feel too bad, I know it's easy for us to say but when you listen to your head, you'll know that when you have done your best for Sunnie, there's really nothing more further a doggie can ask for from her human mummy.. If the time comes to make the decision, let it not be a final goodbye but a "see ya later!" at the rainbow bridge.

Arthur.

Hi Cy,

i agreed with what Arthur said, is easy for us to say this and that, but for u, u r the only one who feel it the most and take whatever consequences that may come along the way. When the time come, u gotta to make the decision whether to keep her or not to.

Something u might want to take into consideration, like how much pain Sunnie need to take and will she suffer being just like that or better to let her go peacefully.

I do believe that u have done the best and sufficient for her as a mama. So stay focus and calm down, hug Sunnie on me and Bonney behalf.

Lets hope for the miracle, OK.

Re: [cyphang] Sunnie's condition - thanks to those who have offered me help [In reply to] Can't Post

It is sad to know that Sunnie has glaucoma on both eye at this young tender age. Did the VET say it is primary or secondary glaucoma ? Any idea how much will the surgery cost ?

I perfectly know how you feel on Sunnie's condition as one of my earlier dogs had distemper and had to fight the disease for 10 days before we put her down. In case like this, we will have to consider the following :-
  • Need to end Sunnie suffering with medication,.....
  • Really need to think ahead of the quality of Sunnie's life in the future and come to certain decision.

I guess in life that are a lot of things that is beyond your control and you just have to deal and face it as it come.

As I was too panic, I didn't ask her if it was primary or secondary glaucoma, she just said the possibility of getting blind is very very high. Surgery is not a good idea because sunnie may not even make it throu becuz she's just a puppy, she wont be able to tahan the anaesthetic (spelling?). I'm bringing her to another vet or two for second opinion on saturday...to see if there are other options...if not we will just see how her progress is like after her medication next week...

Updates on SUnnie's condition [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all:

A bit of update on Sunnie's condition. I took her back from the vet hospital on Friday. Her corneal ulcers seem to be under controlled but her glaucoma is still there. ANother vet confirmed the diagnosis that she's having juvernile glaucoma, a condition that is rarely occured in puppies. I'm closely monitoring her progress, with hourly antibiotic eyedrops for cornea ulcers, nightly glaucoma eyedrops, and twice daily antibiotic pills. Her appetite is normal and as active as ever. Took her out yesterday when we were having dinner as there was no one at home, and managed to smuggle her into an hotel's room by putting her in a big bag hehe...

APart from that, she's also toilet trained now....and have been responding well to 'sit', 'in' and 'out' commands, and also able to fetch a rubber boomerang now. For a 11 weeks puppy, she's doing great. She's so adorable so I really hope she recovers well. The eye specialist said give her 10 days to see if her glaucoma improves before I need to make the next decision...

I will send SUnnie back to the vet hospital tomorrow to be warded for next week.

Let's all pray for her recovery...she means a lot to her mummy.

Thanks again for all the support.
With warm regards,
CY Phang

Cyphang,

Sorry to hear about Sunnie Unimpressed

Really wish/hope sunnie will recover soon. I can understand how you feel as Yoda also had inflamation on his eye. Even though it is not serious, but the heart very pain.

Just wanna ask, you were mentioning 2 type of eye drops, yoda eye also need 2 type of eye drop..one after anohter ( 10 minute in between) and antibiotics for day & night. Does sunnie eye become blueish ?

Coz Yoda got cornea ulcer too...& his eye are slightly blueish...Frown

Re: [KawChai] Updates on SUnnie's condition [In reply to] Can't Post

I suppose sunnie's condition is more serious, glaucoma is a very serious eye disease for dogs and puppies. Her white area of the eye is a bit bluish, the corneal ulcer drops is the antibiotic drops, and the pills two times a day. You have to be careful with the other eye because corneal ulcers can spread if not properly monitored.

I had her back home on Christmas and now she's back to the hospital again. The doctor said that her eyes are less bulging compared to when she first went to the hospital and the corneal ulcers are improving. She is also on another eye gel now, 3 times a day and 10 mins after the hourly eye drops. Will leave her there at the hospital until Sat morning.
