Dew Claws! Can't Post

SmileHi peeps,
i am quite interested in the showing biz. But i read somewhere that in order to show your dog, you need to have its dew claws chopped off. is that applicable in Malaysia? hope not. thanks!

Hi Tim,
Went thru' some old posting and saw your unanswered question. Well as far as I know its not necessary to have the dew claws removed in order to show your dogs.
Dew Claws are normally removed when the the pups are about 3/4 days old. Some breeders do it themselves while some have the vets to do it. (I do it myself) It is less painful when it is done when they are young .
For those who are wandering why, dew claws are removed for health reasons. They can accidently hurt or cause damage to eyes when the dogs play among themselves. It has been said that they are of no use to the dogs but this has been debated.
But I won't go into it. To me it is better to have them removed. In some breeds you can also find dew claws in their hind legs.

Hi Riccaval,

Thanks for the enlightenment. Now I truly understand the story behind the dew claw issue. I rather not remove something that is within the package. Let what's natural stay natural. Hehehe...Thank you so much for the reply.

Hi Luckey,
Its the exam for those who wants to be a dog judge. Conducted by MKA for those who qualify and aspire to be a judge for dog conformation.
There are a few criteria to meet before been accepted for this Judges Training Scheme.
Its more for those who have been slightly longer in the dog game.Wink
Who knows u might be one in future, the country needs more lady judges.

Do you know when next dog show is? Can't wait to go try our luck again, although I need to get luckey used to strangers prying her mouth open! but she is getting good at the stack though.

I heard the next show will be a biggie, back to back show actually. Its the MIPE 2003-MKA-Hills Science Diet International All Breed Championship.
Its on Sat 15th and Sun 16th of March 2003 at MINES expo.
I think there will judges from NZ,Aust,Thailand,India and S'pore. Big show with generous sponsors so you better be there. Enjoy training Luckey for the show and also Brinkley. See you there!!!

Would really love to come to that show... arthur's been telling me about it. But im not sure Luckey enjoys showing all that much... she bit my obedience instructor when he tried to open her mouth to look at her teeth, and gave off this really throaty growl at my vet yesterday when i asked him to give it a go.

Brinkley our golden seems much friendlier with strangers... she just wants to make friends with everyone.

PIty though, I've just taught Luckey to stand real nice in a stack, but all the socializing in the world doesnt seem to make her any more friendly with outsiders. Unsure

Hi Jennifer,

Ouch! Luckey bit her instructor? Hope it was just a nip. Unsure Anyway, if the show ring is dim, there's always the obedience ring which personally I find is more challenging and rewarding. There's always a lot of subjectivity in the show ring especially if the competition is keen. In the obedience ring however, the performance of the dog and handler is open for all to see. Much more challenging to win in the obedience ring..(to me) Not everyone can have a show dog.

Spend more time to train luckey on obedience get yourself and luckey prepared for the prenovice trial in March. It will be fun and do not forget my Corgi Ron and one of Arthur's MS as well as KBS snuffy will also be in prenovice. Hence luckey will have great companies during the trial.

Haha... yeah, that's why Suren was going on about suing me for damages last time (over coffee after the class)... don't think she drew any blood, but might have left some kind of mark Unsure yikes!

Hmm... yeah I think I might do the obedience thing instead... think we probably have more chance there. (altho it wouldve been fun to do the back-to-back thing... maybe for the March show i can enter brinkley for conformation and luckey for obedience... !)

Am signing Luckey up for pre-novice in feb... hope that gives enough time for the march show!

Great. Let see you in the obedience ring during MIPE 2003. Apart from me and Arthur, Cheng See (TohCs) has also tried prenovice trial during the AKU. I will enter two dogs for the prenovice level. Have not decided whether to try the novice class.

Cheers

wow, TWO! that's impressive. Would that be Ron and the pug you had with you last time we saw you at the padang? Who is your novice dog?

If you enter more than one dog, do you go in a different "heat" or it doesn't matter coz the sequence are done one by one? (ie not in a group like the way they test cgc?)

Mike and Ron will go for the prenovice. They are not ready for novice trial but I am working on them for consistency. Hopefully I can get Ron ready for a try.

Of all exercise, only sit stay and down stay will be tested with about 10 in one group. MY two dogs will be tested in different group and that I will have to discuss with the steward on that day. Anyway, it will be quote messy on that day and I will also enter a few dogs in conformation show.

Cheers

Hey Arthur,

Need to double check something....for the obedience trial, do your dogs naturally enter the ring for the trial if u register them or is there a test beforehand before the show to determine a certain number of dogs that will qualify for the trial?

Re: [ginl] Dew Claws! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Gina,

For the obedience championship trial, there is no test beforehand to limit the number of entries. However, the rule book says no single judge can handle more than 40 entries per day. MKA will check if your dog has already qualified for a higher class against the current class it is competing now. eg. Biscuit will be allowed to enter for the pre-novice class only if he has NOT passed the Novice class. This is to give a fighting chance for the newcomers. You can choose to stay in the same class for a maximum of 3 times only before you must move on to the next higher level.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Aruthur for the clarification.....I found it a bit weird too coz that's what I heard in Penang, that the dogs need to be tested first to qualify for the trial.

Even your dogs that has not been attending MKA classes can enter the actual trial. Wait for the entry form that will reach you end Feb or earlu March and just make your submission and there you go !

Hi Jenn,

Boofie is purely a show dog. We do not intent to try him for the obedience.
