Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre Can't Post

Hello all,

I have been considering getting a toy breed (non-hyperactive and non-yappy type) for quite some time. I have read a few books and many many many articles on dog adoption and have just recently finished a whole book on Shih Tzu. Yes it is my preferred choice. However, after seriously assessing my current lifestyle, i realise i may not be able to provide the best for the dog, especially the demanding young puppy. Hopefully comes next year when i am quite free i will consider getting one puppy and give full attention to the dog. Then i can start posting under other headline instead of this one....... :oP

Now there are numerous advice against buying puppy from pet shops due to the many airborne disease such as distemper virus and so on. Has anyone experienced or heard anything on the Pet Safari from the Ikano Power Centre in Mutiara Damansara? I went there almost twice everyweek and realise they really really clean the cage everyday with soaps and brush. The place seems healthy to me. Most important of all, the puppies seem healthy.

Is there any other recommended shops? There has to be some responsible breeders and shops out there.

How about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? I have not seen an actual one at all so far. Anyone know any breeders for this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Regards,
Mr.Chris

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

hello!

i am glad that you are doing your homework and reading up as much as you can about dog adoption and your breed of choice. kudos to you for striving to be a responsible dog owner. Cool

i would just like to point out something. some of us are against buying from petshops not just becoz of the diseases as mentioned by you. there are other reasons too. pls refer to the thread "why you shouldn't buy that puppy in the window" for a more detailed explanation.

if you would like just a pet for companion, why not drop by the SPCA Ampang or PAWS? there are many many dogs available for adoption there. who knows? you might even find a shih tzu up for adoption! and you needn't go through the demanding puppyhood with a much calmer adult.

cheers. Smile

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

hi

first off, yes many members here are against buying puppy from petshops due to various reasons. a few example of bad pet shops are those at Petaling Street... many members here had the experience of buying puppies from those shops in petaling street and few months later seeing their puppies die and can't do anything about it.

now, why am i relating the petaling street shops with Pet safari anyway? because this issue was mentioned in another thread by a fellow member... it appears a shih tzu bought from pet safari died from distemper a week after going home with its owner. and she also stated that the petaling street petshop ppl are those that's distributing the livestocks to pet safari..

i'm not sure if this is a valid fact or not.. but, worth taking some caution :/

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for all the advice. Today I passed by Petaling Street. So decided to check out that pet shop everyone was talking about. Gosh there were so many sick looking puppies there. There were some mixed Shih Tzu (the face is a little long at the mouth) and purebreed. One particular Shih Tzu was barking and barking non stop at a Mini Schnauzer. That Shih Tzu was sure yappy and tremendously hot tempered. This is so unhealthy. And there was one sad-looking ST inside the shop. It's so pity. I really really sympathise with it. That whole place was congested and messy.

Then there were this couple looking at the ST. I almost wanted to lean over conveniently and tell them about the potential infectious diseases around the place but the shopkeeper was very close to me and I didn't want to get into trouble....... So sad......

Treat the dogs the way you wish to be treated. Why can't the owners do that? Sigh......

Mr.Chris

HI !

The pet safari n the petaling street is from the same vendor/supplier so its not adviseable to get pets from them no matter how clean they clean the store its still the front.... its always behind the scene that you never know what they do to the pups.

I got my minpin from breeders instead of petshop and got a chance to see the parents of my pup and the living space of the dog then. Its safer that way.... you'll never know when ppl put a mixed breed and try to sell it off as a purebreed.

As for CKCS, as riccaval have written above...go to the toy group thread n check out the CKCS thread. Lots have been written abt them. Good luck in your search !

cheers,

Hi ...

It's good that you are doing research before getting a pup ... well done ... Smile ...

Am sure that with all your reading and research ... you will have realised that keeping crates clean is just one very little part ... and there is a whole lot more to breeding good healthy puppies ... Personally, I would not buy any dog from a pet shop ...

The Cavalier is a lovely cheerful breed ... There is a senior & regular forum member who breeds Cavaliers ... Smile ... you can email me at surchinmy@yahoo.com ... and I will provide you with the contact ...

It might be an idea to get to know the breeder now, then you can chat with the breeder, maybe arrange to visit the dogs & find out more about the dogs ... find out when the next litter is due ... get to know the breeder and allow the breeder to get to know you ... am sure the breeder won't mind ... and maybe ... you and the breeder can both do some planning ...

Cheers

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,

Ming Yang was right about the suplier/vendor which supply dogs to petaling street also supply to pet safari. Last few weeks ago, I was at Malaysia International Pet Expo which was held at MidValley MegaMall. I saw a lot of dogs and I received a supplier card which it stated that it supplies dogs to the pet shop in Petaling Street and also to Pet Safari.

I also sometimes do patron at Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre, I do admit that the price of the dogs selling there is quite reasonable. But the dogs there is actually suffering there because :

1) The dogs there is fed with little food. I notice a German Shepherd was urinating and lick its urine, why? is because on its dog bowl no food at all, same goes with others dog there.

2) Talking about cleanliness, I don't think so. This is because the cage sometimes was filled with shit and the dogs was left inside the cage with its shit for few hours then only the person in charge will clean it up and i saw by myself a poor little rotwiller was doing his business then nobody come to attend that the rotwiller was left walking around stepping on his shit.

So the best bet to get a good quality dog without suffering from what most pet shop's dog suffered is getting through a breeder. A breeder will set a breeding standard how to breed and it's breed of line. And you can view by yourself the condition of the place how the dog is breed.

You sometimes notice why the price in pet shop sometimes can be expensive and sometimes can be cheap, by setting the price, you can know if the breed the pet shop is selling good in quality but bear in mind that sometimes, buying an expensive dog from a pet shop doen't gurentee that that dog is good in quality and health. Pet shop sometimes also charges quite expensive because the price also covers food, water, electricity and also the rental of the shop. Most pet shop brought from supplier/vendor cheap and sell it expensively to public.

Breeder mostly set a standard price therefore you avoid paying double price when owning a dog from pet shop. Just give a call to MKA if you wish to own a genuine good breed dog and ask for a list of breeder based on which breed of dog you are looking for and do some visiting to the breeder and take some time off to decide which is the best bet of dog from the breeder you can get.

Thats is my advice. Happy Searching.... Wink

Thanks for your advice yipwengcheong. I will call up MKA to get the breeder list when i am ready!

What type of breed you are currently having now? Me looking for a white-with-soft-brown-spots Shih Tzu.

The other day I went to visit my fren with a 2-year old Shih Tzu and got to learn how to groom and trim the hair. I definitely love its temperament and friendliness!

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

You are most welcome. I own a Shih Tzu which is white with brown spot but unfortunetely I brought her from a pet shop at Section 14 PJ last 2 1/2 years ago and few months later after buying her from that pet shop only, I discover 'puppy.com' website and after reading most of the post posted inside, I'am a bit worried that my Shih Tzu might end up being not healthy and suffer from distamper.

Luckly, now my Shih Tzu is in much better health and enjoy my company and quite naughty and playful too. I'am currently looking for a pair of Shih Tzu to accompany my dear lonely Shih Tzu.

Re: [cnfs] Pet Safari in Ikano Power Centre [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi There,

I would advice you to consider very carefully when purchasing pets from Pets Safari. Recently (approx 2 weeks back), I got my first Basset Hound(a.k.a Hush Puppies) from them. At first look, she was nothing much except all skins and bones. When I was speaking to a staff there, I was told that they only feed very VERY small portion to the dogs. As a result, most the dogs there are always in hunger.

When I brought my pup, Gucci, back home, she was always in a eating frenzy, never seem to stop at all.

What's worse, after my last check up about a week ago from the vet, it seems that she was not even de-wormed. Poor Gucci was very underweight (3.35kg).

Thankfully she seems to be getting better. Can't wait till after her 3 vaccination to bring her go socialise with other doggies..

Why don't you call up MKA to get a list of breeders of your choice of breed. Then you'll get to see the parents of the puppy which will be growing to become. Prices are even cheaper in certain instances. There are many nice and responsible breeders who will help match the right puppy to your lifestyle. Good luck!

Oh... don't buy the pups from Safari... was told and I think it is a bit true lah that the pups there are suppplied by the petaling street petshop..... very poor quality dogs.... buy lab or gr from MKA people, I bought my lab from a breeder 5 years ago and she only cost me RM500!!! With MKA cert....... You want lab? My friend has some pups......
