not barking at strangers Can't Post

hi, my dog, a 2 year old spaniel has been with us since she was 2 months old. However, she has a problem of not barking at anybody.i was told that a spaniel is very fierce and will soon be very protective of its territory. i know that it is considered to be a good dog as it is acting this way but we are hoping that she would at least bark at people we didn't invite into our house. When does dogs usually become more "territorial"?

hi,

Sometimes whether a dog is 2 yrs or 2 months old, they might or might not bark at all. I'm not too sure whether training your dog to bark at strangers would be a great idea as some dogs will eventually think that they should bark at whatever that passes by and thus making a nuisanse around the neighborhood. I know some GSD who are known to be naturally fierce are really tame and gentle so sometimes when u think that a dog has very fierce tempremental and all aren't exactly accurarate. It also depends on your lifestyle i think. I think give her some time and naturally her instincts will tell her to start barking. It takes time for them to be "territorial".

Hello Dandelion ...

We meet again ... Smile ...

When you say spaniel, I assume you mean a Cocker Spaniel ... and this is how Cocker Spaniels are described ...

English Cocker Spaniel " ... The classic temperament of the English Cocker Spaniel is that of the "Merry Cocker." English Cocker Spaniels are friendly, affectionate, and loyal. This is most obviously displayed in the incessant tail wagging of a happy English Cocker Spaniel. They are good with children and make wonderful companion dogs ..."

American Cocker Spaniel " ... Merry and endearing. A happy tail-wagger. Gentle and trusting, with average intelligence. They are lively, playful and devoted, but should be socialized well when they are young to avoid a tendency for timidity. Cockers love everyone and need people to be happy ..."

You might like to check these websites ...

www.faqs.org/faqs/dogs-faq/breeds/englishcockers/

www.dogbreedinfo.com/americancocker.htm

The Cocker Spaniel is not a "very fierce dog" ... they are loving, gentle dogs that love their owners and being with their owners, and friendly to everyone ... In fact, if you find a fierce Cocker, I would suggest that something is wrong with the Cocker ...

Most dogs get more territorial when they start to leave puppyhood and approach adulthood ... that would be about 8 to 12 months ...

Cheers Smile

Hello ... Smile

I think these are both very good training books ...

Good Owners, Great Dogs

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0446675385/qid=1078212418//ref=pd_ka_1/103-0773109-0555015?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

How to be Your Dog's Best Friend

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0316610003/ref=cm_bg_f_3/103-0773109-0555015?v=glance

If you cannot find them in the local book shops ... they are worth ordering from Amazon or Books-A-Million ...

This is also a very useful site for reference & has lots of training articles ...

www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/dog.htm

But I would still recommend getting a good traing book or manual, for easy reference and reading ...

Wish you all the best with you new friend ... may you both have many wonderful years together ...

Cheers Smile

Re: [surchinmy] not barking at strangers [In reply to] Can't Post

Surchinmy,
Many of my friends came to my house to see my dog. They do realise something. The dog is too friendly and doesn't bark at strangers that approaches our gate. My spitz use to bark last time, at least we know some strangers are at the gate. Is this normal for a dog not to bark or is the puppy too young - 8 mths? will they start barking after 1 year? My friend, previously a dog trainer recommend me to send the dog for training to bark at strangers.
what's your advice?

To bark or not to bark ...

Young dogs, territorial instincts & socialisation

For most dogs and dog breeds ... the territorial instincts start to kick in sometime between 8 to 12months ... Until then, most young dogs are easy to approach and easy to make friends with ... Which is why most experienced dog people will advice you to socialise a dog from young ...

As to why socialisation is important ... visit the following sites ...

http://www.apbc.org.uk/ARTICLE5.HTM

http://www.cockerspanielrage.org.uk/puppy_socialisation.htm

The Thai Ridgeback

Now, lets look at the Thai Ridgeback standard ... and see what Thai Rbacks are like ... Check these sites:

http://www.ukcdogs.com/...iridgeback.std.shtml

http://www.geocities.com/...6385/temperment.html

You will find that the accepted temperament for the Thai Rback is "... devoted to family but wary of strangers ..."

So, it means that your Thai Rback naturally possesses good watch-dog instincts (and be relatively territorial) ... so, I wouldn't worry about your dog not barking at strangers ... The barking will come by itself soon enough ... and then maybe you might wish the dog didn't bark so much ... Tongue ...

Send a dog to be trained how to bark? ... That is very much a personal decision, and depends on what you expect from your dog.

Cheers ...
