Essentials to bring to dog show Can't Post

Hiya,

Do I need to bring Luckey's:
- Pedigree Cert
- Vet Records
- anything else
for the show?

It doesnt state any of this in the instructions of the confirmation letter sent by MKA but just wanted to make sure...

Hi,

Just bring the letter that MKA sent you confirming your entry and exhibit number. Show this letter at the registration desk and you'll get your exhibitor number tag 126. Wear this when showing Luckey. Keep your ears open for minor puppy judging which normally starts off early round 9-9.30am. Happy showing!

How do you actually qualilfies yourself for competition and what are the requirements? Can you just give me a brief on this as I am interested to enter my dog for show, but no idea where to begin! Thanks.

You can enter your dog as long as your dog is purebred and MKA registered. If you are an MKA member, they will send you entry forms with info on upcoming shows via post. One requirement is to bring along a crate for your dog during the show... apart from that, a show leash, water etc.

I'm new to this too, and have only entered the minor puppy class (which is run sweepstakes style with all breeds competing one round against each other)... so the line up of winning pups in this class can be a misture of breeds. Once your pup is out of minor puppy, you compete in different sections of your breed, then move up to group, then compete for BEST in SHOW (if you get that far). I havent done any of this yet, Arthur, Mr Khoo and others on this website can tell you more.

But do come oin the show circuit, it is fun! Smile

Re: [luckey] Essentials to bring to dog show [In reply to] Can't Post

To be honest, I am extremely new at this. I have registered my dog with MKA but having some kind of trouble to get my own membership card from them. As you can see, I've posted a few queries asking other what actually happends after I pay the membership fee. I will give them a call on Monday to confirm my membership. If everything goes smoothly, I should start receiving notices or updates from MKA directly as I've received none so far.

I brought my dog for obedient training and she has been attending for months now... she has this what they call "only child syndrome"Crazy as she tends to be very attached to me or my sister and doesn't really like to socialise with other dogs.. she will be very protective and starts to bark non-stop.. till she earns her own title 'THE BARKER' - defending champion... those who attended the same class would know which dog it is if i say the dog that barks non-stop... but luckily she's much better now.. pphheeww.. that's one of my concern as well if i were to take her into the competition ring!!!

What level are you at with your dog now? (what's your dog's name?) ... saw some really cute silkiy's last weekend at padang merbuk... are you taking CGC exam?

I think Luckey also has only child syndrome, although she actually isnt an only child (or dog) and has never been (being a litter of 8!). She cries when i leave her with someone and walk away to hide behind that big tree at padang merbuk... i'm trying to counter that by madly practising at home.

My silky is a year old... and Silky are known for their loyalty and they are very attached.. especially to me and my sister... well, i can't really think of a nick to use at this forum, so i used my dog's name instead. So my Silky's name is Jaz :) ha!ha! my name is Lisa. :) and we are from Penang.. so i don't think it was me whom you saw last weekend. Jaz will always follows me where ever i go, even to the toilet!! she's just 'kaypo' to see what i am doing and even during dinner or just sitting down reading newspaper or magazines, she will stay right besides me and lay her head on my feet or let her paws be on my feet or just MUST lay down next to me... i sometimes wonder what is going to happen if i go overseas!!

i think silkys and cockers are maybe quite similar. Luckey is just like that... but she's fine when i am completely out of sight, but when i come back from work and she smells me or sees me, THEN she will start to cry, even when she is loose in the house, and she can see me coming out the car through the window, she will strt to whimper and come dashing to greet me when i enter the house, then just jump up, lick me and sit on my lap for a while.

am going overseas in april and hope she will be ok!

Ic, that's nice. So how would you know which category you will be competing or qualify to enter? is there a standard guide or this depends on each competition that they are going to held?

Re: [jaz] Essentials to bring to dog show [In reply to] Can't Post

The categories available under each breed are :-
  • Minor Puppy
For dogs 3 above months to under 6 months of age on the day of the Show.

  • Puppy
For dogs above 6 months to under 12 months of age on the day of the show.

  • Junior
For dogs above 12 months to under 24 months of age on the day the Show.

  • Maiden
For dogs, which have never won a 1st prize

  • Veteran
For dogs above 5 years of age on the day of the show.

  • Open
For all dogs above 6 months old.

  • Malaysian bred
    For dogs born in Malaysia.

Since your Silky is more than a year old, you Silky will qualify to compete under the Junior, Maiden, Open and Malaysian Bred (if you dog is bred locally) categories.

For a start, you may wish to try Maiden and Junior categories ( and mal Bred) and as you gain for experience, you can try other category such as Open category.

Thanks a million!! Now that I know which category to participate, I'll see if I have the guts to sign up and let Jaz walk into the competition ring.... Basically, what would the judges look at to determine the winner? I can't just possible take Jaz into the ring for ?

Re: [jaz] Essentials to bring to dog show [In reply to] Can't Post

The ABC (All Breed Championship) Show organized by MKA are basically Conformation shows. In all Conformation Show, the Judges will inspect the exihibits (The Dogs) for conformation, or judging the dog on how well its physical characteristics and temperament meet the breed standard. For your Silky, you want to see if he/she meet the breed standard. A good guideline is the

AKC breed standard at
http://www.akc.org/...recbreeds/silter.cfm or

The Kennel Club Breed Standard at
http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/...verdogs/toy/y903.htm

The areas of judging include:-
  1. General Appearance
  2. Size and Proportion
  3. Head
  4. Neck, Top line and Body
  5. Forequarters
  6. Hindquarters
  7. Coat
  8. Colour
  9. Gait
  10. Temperament

Since Silky Terrier is belong to the Toy Group and you will be expected to present your Silky on a table and stack properly to allow the Judge to examine your Silky. The Judge will attempt to examine the dog teeth and you must train your silky to allow stranger to open his mouth for examination. The Judge will also inspect other areas such as coat, bones hindquarters, neck and others. As most dogs are afraid of height, you need to get your silky to used to standing on table.

Your dog also need to walk around the Conformation Ring in anti clockwise direction either in circle or triangular mannar so that the judge will be able to see the Front View, Back View and Side View of the dog when the dog moves.

Hope to see you in the ring in March 2003 in MIPE. There will be two shows, one on Saturday and the otherone on Sunday. It will be funs. There will also be obedience trial on Saturday as well and several of the Puppycom members will particiapate in both Conformation and Obedience in that two days events. Hope to see you there.

Cheers

Hie there, thanks a bunch for the info. It really helps. Now, i know which areas to focus on if i really want Jaz to participate in the coming competition... Guess what, I came home from work and the first thing i did was to check her teeth :) to see how her reaction is.... I shall print out your criteria for competing and learn it by hard and improve Jaz in anyway i can. Thanks again!
