Mad dog Can't Post

I seem to be the most frequent poster in this section Crazy wonder why??

Anyway, wanted to seek some good advice here about my mad dog, Jupey (well, eh is my mum's dog really). He is very sweet and sooo super friendly, but he has this crazy streak in him. He can suddenly lash out and bite.

I heard that golden cockers have tendency toward "rage syndrome" but we need to stop his rage before he really hurts somebody. He has bitten a lot of humans (has not bitten other dogs yet, although he growls if they try to take his chew toys or something)

Today he bit a member of our household again - on the abdomen - only a superficial wound but of course with tetanus jab and antibiotics just in case.

There was talk of putting him down if he gets too dangerous, but he is otherwise really loving, but too protective over people he thinks belong to him (like my mum he thinks belongs to him) and also over his toys and chewbones (or in fact anything he gets his paws on becomes his.

Is there a good way to correct behaviour like this?

Perhaps he's feeling territorial or possesive over what he thinks "belongs" to him. You could try neutering him. But I heard that it is not as effective because he's already got that instinct in him. If he had been spayed when he was younger, it would have helped to curb his aggression (But Luckey wouldn't have been born Wink). Also, dogs always relay body signals before attacking, so maybe you should warn people to be extra alert around him. If he starts looking at you from the corner of his eye, back off. Have you read the post entitled Rude Dog? The article there has some good pointers.

Hi Tish

Thanks... Jupes is not dangerous around certain people, but just one new member of our hsehold who is very scared of him, coz she was bitten by him before, and when he attacked yesterday i think he was just taking out his "rage" on someone he felt was below him in the top dog world.

But yes, everyone IS extra careful round him, they make sure not to offend him!Wink

yeah, the neutering solution also came up, but he's already 3 yrs, so prob won't make much difference to his attitude. ALso, he wasn't this aggresive when he was younger...

There are many books which you can refer to for help. I have couple which I can lend you though they don't deal specifically with aggression. But they do have small sections which could get you started in the right direction.

I feel very sorry for you and hope that something can be done. With having so many dogs, my family also faces this problem with two particular dogs. Sheeri has also started "mouthing" and snapping at Jon when she gets riled. This really worried me because she may extend this behaviour to any children we may have...

Do contact me if you fancy borrowing my books, ok?

Re: [alicia] Mad dog [In reply to] Can't Post

hopefully it'll be better for my household when my hubby and i move out and take luckey with us... then one less dog to cope with! but am abit apprehensive about Jupey's son growing up, coz apparently maledogs fight with other male dogs. I hope a good level of top-doggged-ness is established now so there won't be a fight later.

Also, it seems Jupey is worst when my mum's around coz he's her dog and i guess he is braver when she's around, hence sometimes naughtier. BUt the test will be when she goes on her trip and we have to manage without her.

He'll either become really good, or we won't know what to do with him & then we'll have to tie him up to avoid an accident.

well, good news is he hasnt bitten anyone since !

Hi Luckey. How true is this "rage syndrome" that golden cockers have tendency toward? I also heard of golden ECS being prone to skin problem. Well, in general, I feel that it is just the character of Jupey. Dogs have their individual characters and we just have to shower them with TLC and yet be stern on certain occasion. As for Caldrone, occasionally he does snap on my hand when I rub him. Can be quite painful coz of the pressure applied. Either I rub him on the wrong place or he's feeling agitated. However, each time he does that, I give him a real good scolding and tested him again. I guess he's getting the message. Luckily he's fine with stranger but I just need to socialise him more with human. So, be patient with Jupey and try different ways to change such behaviour. Putting him down is NOT an option I hope Unsure. I'm no expert in dog behaviour but I suppose it's similiar to teaching a child when he/she is notti. Good luck.

no i dont think putting him downis an option, although my mum always brings that up after he's just bitten someboday. We just have to be more careful with him coz we know he is like that. Not all the time, but he gets into this real rage and most of the time we can tell if he's about to bite, so we can stop it. but just wish he wasnt like that.

No not all golden ECS are like that, his wife juno is the sweetest thing - never ever bites ever.
