shalom came home and.... Can't Post

ok shalom came home last night.

was very good during the entire journey...i reckon we have a travelling doggie. can't wait to take her for road trips...

so the first night was ok. she barked a total of 4 times and whined a little. barked when i ignored her coz i was on the hp whilst she sat on my feet.

absolutely a darling especially when she tilts her head when you talk to her.

BUT 4 worries thus far:
(1) she does not really eat! in fact she is the smallest of the siblings and i mean really small. she is coming to 2 months on 22 dec and she is only 70% the size of her other siblings...ooops.

(2) her potty training by her mummy's mummy seems not to be working. she peed and pooped on the floor since lat night. and whines when i caught her peeing on the floor this morning. hmmm books make it easy to talk to doggie on that but reality...i failed to do so.

(3) took her walkies this morning. she was scared and shaking like a leaf. she only walked when i said "come" and stops when the "come" stops!.

(4) when do i start her jabs? i've been informed that she has had her deworming only.

so am i to eager on my 7 weeks plus puppy?

Hi A_Evie & Shalom Smile......

Happy that you finally got your doggie... must be one of the happiest moments in life.... it was how I felt when I got LadeeLaugh...

about her food... what type of food are you giving her?...did you have some from her breeder?... if dry food, soak in warm water to soften the kibbles coz she is still young... and are you giving her milk?...I would recommed Milkadog... best for pups... quality stuff... its what I gave Ladee... makes her strong like a horse now...

toilet training takes time and patiences... pups usually need to go after waking from naps, after food and if they are turning in circles... during these times take her to the spot you want her to do her business... you gotta be consistant and she'll learn soon... tyr using newspaper...leave some of her previous urine as an indicator... reward her and compliment her when she does it correctly.... she'll soon be good at it...

walks?...aiyks... make sure she has all her jabs first... outdoors there are lotsa viruses and bacterias harmful to her... if I am not wrong you can take her to the vet a week after you have brought her home... can bring her for just checks to see if she is okay and make an appiontment with vet now... she didn't have her first jab yet?... where about do you stay? maybe can recommend...

hope you and Shalom have a great time togetherSmileWink...

Re: [a_evie] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello ...

Glad to hear Shalom is safely home ...

Vaccination protocol:
It's time to start your puppy's vaccination schedule. The breeder should have provided you with the pup's medical history and veterinary card, that details medication & treatment record (including earlier vaccinations, if any).

The basic protocol may be found in these sites. There is some variation, but your vet will be able to advice:

http://www.petsmart.com/...s/article_3367.shtml

http://www.kerryblues.org/KB/DODDS.HTML

Please commence vaccinations before taking pup outdoors, check with vet as to when its safe to take pup outdoors & for socialisation with other dogs.

House training (pee & poop training): You already have a training manual, and there are many threads offering advice on this issue ... So, just 3 points:

(a) The key to training (for anything, including house training, whether paper or spot training) is CONSISTENCY. The more consistent you are - the faster your results. In other words, the more regularly you show your pup where to pee & poop the faster the correct habit is reinforced.

(b) Remember, puppies pee & poop quite often and there is no way to regulate or minimise that with pups. At this age, your house training must provide and allow pup to pee & poop in the designated place at night when everyone else is asleep. Do not force (or have an arrangement that forces) your pup pee or poop where it sleeps!!! ... this can lead to many complications.

(c) Physical or verbal punishment merely confuses the pup and complicates house training (check threads for reasons)

Carried out consistently, your pup should be reasonably house trained by the end of 7days to 2weeks.

Diet: Plenty of threads on this issue. Proper nutrition for a pup is critical, do not confuse quantity with quality ... I would rather a dog eat less but eat well, namely - eat good proper food ... A good quality kibble supplemented by freshly prepared food is always a good idea. If the pup finds kibble dry, add a little warm water to soften the kibble. Please read up & reseach puppy nutrition. Being well-intentioned is insufficient, knowledge is the answer.

Fear Periods: Do a search on "fear periods" in the forum ... and once again - good intentions are insufficient. Puppies go through various fear periods, this is part of a dog's mental & instinctive make-up that was necessary for survival when dogs were wild ... Today, for domestic dogs, it's the owner's responsibility to understand and manage "fear periods" ...

Properly handling fear periods will allow your pup to grow into a steady and confident adult. Your training manual should also have some information on this issue.

Over cuddling and pampering may satisfy our personal emotions but may not necessarily be good for the pup in the long run. But on the other hand, exposing the pup to more new sensations than the pup can reasonably cope with may be equally detrimental.

The key is - learning about your canine friend and finding the "balance" required by YOUR SPECIFIC & INDIVIDUAL pup ...

Move gradually but consistently towards your goals for yourself and your pup. The speed must be determined by your pup's temperament, and not your temperament!

Consistency also means that you should not allow your pup to do anything you would not want it to do as an adult dog ...

For example: If you do not want your dog to chew shoes or furniture - then don't let the dog do it as a pup, not even old shoes (dogs cannot tell the difference) ... If you do not want an adult dog on your bed or bedroom, then the pup must be taught now ... If you do not want your dog to beg at the table, then do not give treats your pup from the table. If you make exceptions, you confuse your dog, and then it's not the dog's fault ... and you can make training that much harder.

All the best Smile

Re: [ladee_m] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

hi!

so walkies is a bad idea now? hmm...will start walkies outdoor only when jabs are in place. how long would that take?

i was told by the breeder to send her for jabs beginning next month only as she has had her deworming thus far.

we stay at taman desa - faber tiara.

potty...i've left some newspaper that i had stained with her urine this morning. hope it works. again lotsa patience.

have bought her some reward snacks for puppies. she loves theem. i have pebbeles from her breeder and also some that we bought. so where can i get the milk that you mentioned. i did not seem to find it at the few pet stores that i went to.

also i can't her toys for her size. she seems rather small for a 7 weeks pup compared to her siblings. sso i only have the pressed bone (small ones) that she only plays with when i hold it!

i wanted to buy a kong but the pet shop said that my pup was too smalllah.

macam mana?

Re: [a_evie] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Evie Smile

When I first brought Ladee home she weights only 480grams... is Shalom smaller than that?... but it will be okay... I gave Ladee soft toys of my own... little ones usually for keychains and stuff like that... best place to get these are in MCDonalds... the happy Meals comes with small soft toys sometimesLaugh

I am not familiar with Taman Desa but I think you should bring her for normal checks of her vitals now and see if you can arrange for an appiontment to take her first jab... make sure you bring her to a licences vet and he/she is trained... sorry I cannot help...in PJ, I know some...

usually the puppy will be kinna stress being away from mommy and siblings at this piont so if you jab so soon she might not be well after the jab... let her get used to you and your families and the new house and settle down for a week first... that was what I was told when I got Ladee... but keep her indoors no sniffing around the garden also... she is valnerable at this stage so you must be very careful... her antibody is really low and you don't wanna get her infected with any deadly viruses...

about the milk... usually most pet store carries this product so try asking... the can is white and have green lines product of france... only places I know is in PJ so if you cannot fine around your place maybe you wanna try comming to PJ... let me know and I can give you some names of pet stores... maybe can try at the vet too... some vets sells it too...

Re: [ladee_m] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

will definitely be keeping her indoors. will check the vet in cheras tmn segar (corner lot) that i used to send all my other pets to.

btw, which vet or pet shop would you recommend in pj for the milk. i may well swing by to pj and get it instead.

as for shalom's weight, i don;t have a scale...so can't weigh her but i feel her bones (ribs). she pretty much eats or drinks her milk only when she is hand fed or is praised. she licks her milk once and then looks at you. you say nothing she walks away!

as for her toys....i'll try very hard to get her mcdonald's...i am a collector of soft toys and have quite a lot for a person my age...btw i still have my teddy for my 5th birthday on my bed...scruffy but i still don;t have the heart to give (share) with shalom. too much memories attached to them.

reckon i'll get her something later today...and get myself one too. but is it safe for her to bite?

she's taken to liking one of those bouncy rubber balls the smaller than a ping pong ball that my cat plays with. she likes chasing it and then chewing it...and i worry that she'll chew off teh rubber. so for now we play with teh said rubber ball together. she's understanding the term "give" quite well. she runs off with the ball and when you say give...either she walks and releases or i have to walk to her and take it from her mouthh with no resistance...unlie her chewy bone that she holds on rather tightly.

she's grown. she pottied well on her papers last night but the moment i release her into teh rest of the house, she either does it on the floor (anywhere) or on the rugs. i think i changed 4 rugs this morning and washed 9 since yesterday. accidents?

Re: [a_evie] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Evie Smile

i think i am not allowed to mention the names in here but there are few pet stores in ss2 area... all the shops should have milkadog... I got my supplies there last time... if you gimme your e-mail, I'll be glad to give you the names...

Shalom sounds very timid and comical... I think she is still adjusting to the new enviroment... give her some time and constantly reassure her you are there for her... actually hand feeding your furkid is good but dun make it a habit... someone in this forum mention that hand feeding can teach the doggie to not be fierce when ppl try going near their food... you know how some dogs are very protective over food and will snap if any body tries going near... my Ladee stills want me to hand feed her once in awhileCrazy... female doggies tend to be very manja... sometimes she will want me to sit with her as she eats... just to be near her...

toys are okay... just make sure if there are small beeds as the eyes or buttons be removed... taggs... anything you think might be dangerous... i had so many soft toys, I didn't know what to do with so when Ladee can, I told myself its a good excuse to share... and get rid of some... yes all have memories but too many and had to let go... some of my friends will kill me if they know I give the soft toys they gave me to my Ladee... such as the Hush puppies... tazmania devil... Ladee has rubber balls too...I got them from Ikea... very good and won't peal off...

hope my blabbling can help... I am also learning lots and am glad can share my experience with you... if cannot work pls dun 'kutuk' me... so happy for you having a small pup at home... makes me wanna get another...

and you can get the balls from ikea? sounds like i have many places to run this week. there is ikea for the ball (and curtain plus cushions for the new home). usj taipan opp the honda showroom to get a fence to make barriers so that shalom dpes not enter the carpetted rooms...at least until she is very well potty trained...and ss2 for milk...eeeks...am thinking how to complete the errants and leave her at home...sigh...went back during lunch to see her. she did not realise we were home...sleeping...

Hi Evie Smile...

Glad I can be of help...hope Shalom's appetite will pick up soon... have you brought her to the vet?... ask him if her weight is okay?... fine out about her required daily nutrition intake too... then you'll know exactly how much you'll have to feed her daily... under feed or over feed can cause serious problem to your furkid in future... I think you'll have to see her weight to measure how much food to give her daily...

hope all goes well for Shalom...

Merry Christmas

Re: [ladee_m] shalom came home and.... [In reply to] Can't Post

shalom was wonderful over the weekend. discovered that she is basically a picky eater. giver her what she likes to eat and she eats well...and indeed has put on some weight.

she rejected milkadog with kibbles. but loves them with her wet food. she seems to like her kibbles as it is...solid hard and one should see the way she munches her kibbles. its like a game for her. so her feeding seems to be longer than 20 minutes each time. i am kinda worried so i left kibbles on her plate...something like for her to snack on....each session she would eat like 10 kibbles, then play around..then poop and sleeep. then the cycle starts again eat kibbles etc.

spoke to her breeder. she says anytime in week 1 january would be a good time for her vaccinations.

Yeah she's not with me yet!!!! Frown Hope she is doing fine... Will only bring her back on 2nd Jan evening.

Poop eating eh... i think Sushi will be bound to do that too, out of sheer boredom when i leave her alone at home! Sigh.... Well do be patient and keep on trying the pepper and tabasco on her poo or feeding her garlic! It seems the smell will deter her from her poo.... but she will stink tho Tongue...

Merry Christmas! Will be outstation for a while. Take care and hug Shalom for me!

garlic and stinko...aargh...but that should be better than the smell of poop in her mouth.

anyway, i've started shalom on aromatherapy...real ones not th commeercial prepared. we change scents every 2 days. so far she's done lavendar, geranium and today is rose.

putting charcoal in her bathroom helps disperse the bad smell too for the moment. i guess garlic in her poo can't be that bad with aromatheraphy and charcoal....but i'll do anything for her to stop eating poo...

will look forward to reading more of sushi.

meanwhile...have fun and merry christmas!!!Wink
