Yes you got me correctly. Motivational is all right but drive work and basic bite the rags should still be done together. If you see the final results, many dogs especially those in BSP and WUSV trials are alligators when they comes to protection work. They needent be motivated more to do the work it just seams so natural for them. However only a small handfull had the same attitude when it comes to OB. That tells you early that you must know how to balance up the motivation in a dog so that he can function well in all excercise. A person that can do that is a master at understanding and how to utilise drives of a dog.
Always remember, Motivation builds bond, Fair correction builds understanding, Unfair correction kills bond. The only catch here is.......how well is a trainer's understanding of what is fair and what is unfair. That takes a lot of study, experience and indepth understanding of how drives work in a dog.
