Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Hi there..

I think it all depends on the personality of the dog. Sounds like the silky is a dominant dog... Smile Dogs are pack animals and so, they really like to establish who is boss. IMHO, very hard to say as this is a personality thing, not a breed thing?

Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Hi,

Yea.. Some breeds are a bit "hostile" to other types of breed... Wouldn't know too much 'coz I've been keeping a X-Terrier and Spitz last time. Tongue

I've got a JRT pup and she is pretty hyper. Can be a bit stubborn at times, but they are quite intelligent. One thing to take note of, JRT pups can sometimes make quite a lot of noise. Of course, got to train-lor. I've got a long road ahead to making this pup of mine a good canine citizen!

Anyway, not so sure about how JRTs react to other breeds of dogs... Blush Any comments out there?

Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

I have 2 JRT, Though they 're hyperactive but it's not difficult to take care of them. It depends on the character of the JRT,,whether they will bully the silky terrier or not. My female JRT is more dominant and more aggressive than my male. The male is more patient and will let the female take her meal first. He is quite a gentleman. JRT is very intelligent and with proper training, they can mix well with other breeds. I think it should not be a problem.

Re: [aragorn2976] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

haha, that's why i need to do more research about this dog before i get it.. cos i still remember last time i bought the cocker spaniel(the picture), he was so hyper-active.. and bite sofa... shoe....everything.... put it in the cage, he will bark like hell.... until i punish him... but sometimes i try to release him when i was not around, and when i backed home... can't imagine how bad my house will be... the fellow bite tissues and newspaper all around... and stole my housemate the food(tiny food for his fish) and spread around my housel.. damn it..

really a nightmare for me and sometimes i need to travel and my doggie will put at my mum there... my mum complaints like hell cos the fellow like to bite things and drink cooking oil(crazy).

but when he getting stable... he was passed away few months ago...we also don't know what happen...cos during that time was morning and after he had his breakfast as usual, and poo outside..

after that, he suddenly barked so loud and non stop, and running around. looked so fear and suffer there... we try to calm down him, and he starts vomited together with white bubbles from his mouth... less than 5 minutes, he passed away...

all of us so shocked and no time to have any action and feeling yet, he already died.... i cried like hell even i was a guy... hai.....

but it's fine now and do hope him can gone with peace..

Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

First of all, you need to have crate-training for the JRT. Start them when they are puppies and even they bark, don't give way. Don't let them dominate you. You have to have strong heart not to let them loose so easily.Smile

Actually, I brought up my 2 JRT as guard dogs and since they are small, it is easier to take care of them compared to big dogs. I will cage the JRT separately in the crate at night behind our door grille. Whenever they see stranger stopping in front of our gate, they will bark vigorously. This way, it is not so easy to throw food inside to poison the dogs. Now they are so used to their crate and when we go out, we will cage them and they will not soil or urinate in the crate.

They are very intelligent and they will hunt down anything that moves even ants Smile. And when you really spend time to talk and counsel them, they will listen. At times, I still need to beat the dogs to deter them from destroying things especially the newspaper.

I feel that if you want them to behave like the toy dogs, I don't think it is possbile. Basically, they are hunting dogs and have hunting instinct. What I like my 2 JRT is that they are very fun to be with and they like to follow you wherever you go. One of my JRTs can really jump and he can jump up as high as my chest. And he can retrieve tennis balls too. My female can perform a roll-over trick. When we bring them to open field, they really like it and can run very fast and no way I can outrun them.

Re: [dmax] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Greetings!

I have to agree with you that the JRT puppies have the characteristics like you mentioned.

I spent an entire weekend with the new JRT puppy (she's only 1 and 3/4 mths old) and found that she can be stubborn, very determined, intelligent and hyperactive. Crazy

I do agree with the crate/cage training. Just read my puppy health and training book and learnt that you have to really train them to stay in their crate/cage. The book says that should slowly get them used to the crate/cage by letting them stay inside for increments of 5 minutes at each stage.

I noticed that my pup makes a lot of noise when we cage her and is happiest when she is free since she is a hunting dog.Tongue

Am sure that when you get a JRT, you will not regret it!

Re: [aragorn2976] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Great to hear that you got yourself a JRT puppy. Once the puppy gets use to the crate, the puppy will not bark. Also, you need to train your puppy on housebreaking. I'm sure you will be very busy.

Make sure you get her started on monthly Heartworm preventives before she reaches 3 months old. Some vets advise to start the puppies by 8 weeks old. Heartworms are a parasitic worm that live in the heart and nearby blood vessels and they can kill.

Also, nowadays, I don't buy anymore garlic pills or any other vitamin pills. I just gave them Missing Link, a powdered supplement which support healthy skin and coat, digestive health and balanced energy levels.

Thanks for the tip!

I used to give garlic pills to my previous X-Terrier and we put Nutri-coat in her food last time. I just heard about Missing Link from my mom's friend yesterday. Will get it today at the pet store!

Hey, enemykiller, hope you have decided on which Terrier to get man! Good luck!

Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Hi,

Previously, when I was looking for a JRT two years ago, it was difficult to find one. I still remembered when I approached one shop in SS2, the guy there told me not many people know how to appreciate this dog because they look like "choi yin gou" like what your gf said. But I don't agree with that guy's view.

I like JRT not so much of the appearance but rather their characters which are unique in nature, have high energy level and are very intelligence. They are small in size and the one with smooth coat seem more appealing to me. They don't like to be hugged for too long as they are hyper and want to do something all the time. They are basically hunting dogs.

For me, I like dogs that are active and can bring joy to our family. If I were to own a pug, I will be bored to deathLaughLaugh

With regard to JRT playing and eating their own stool, I have not encountered this problem with my JRT. But my female did eat her puppies' stool when they were very young. But now...no more since the puppies have grown a bit. I believe the stool eating is a habit and not due to certain breed. If dogs eat their stool, their diet may need to be changed to stop this habit.

Re: [enemykiller] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

hi..hi.. Smile

Sorry for interupting the "conversation"..but i do read alot abt the pros of having a JRT than a Silky Terrier..(mayb coz owners of Silkies doesnt really log into this category).. Wink Dunt "shoot" me ar, all JRT owners... Tongue

Well, we have 2 Silkies, named Hazel (1 yr plus) and Harry (3 mths) and they are indeed very intelligent, cheecky, sharp, alert and fun-loving ! Sly You may wanna read more abt Silkies traits in the "toy group" section before deciding.. but most importantly, what do u want in a dog?? Do you live in a landed property or a condo?? Have time for grooming??..etc

Hope you can have your ideal dog very soon and enjoy every moments of having him/her!! Laugh

Re: Mother dogs eating puppy's poop

I read about this in a book about cats but it makes perfect sense for dogs too.

Cat Mothers eat their offspring's poop so that predators cannot trace their whereabouts. That can also explain "cannibalistic" behaviour as well.

I think this kind of behaviour is practised throughout the animal kingdom (luckily not the homo sapiens) which gives birth to big litters and have very helpless offsprings (unlike deers and zebras which walk immediately after birth) and we only notice it in cats and dogs because they are the most popular pets?

Just sharing one of the theories why they do it.

But then we'll never know we can only guess.

Hello.. I'm a new member. I just bought a 2month old JRT puppy last sunday. Since I brought him back till date, he has been very very noisy whenever I cage him especially during the nite. I tried so many way make him stop barking but it's seems that he will never stop until you attend to him. His voice get louder and louder each time he left unattended. Is there anyway for me to control this barking? I'm really worry that my neighbour will complain about it.

When I first brought back one of my JRTs, I did not encounter such problem faced by junecheah. She didn't bark at all when she was caged at nite. No problem with my second JRT too cause he has my first one as his company.

Hey, thanks for informing me about the MPSJ's new ruling the other day. I was so busy finalising a report....could'nt reply your sms. Yes..so how're you going to get the license. I think tt will be a problem for you. I have not got mine cause too busy with works. Didn't have time to send my car for service too. Yesterday, we went for that show in Genting and did enjoy the show a lot.

Re: [junecheah] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Hi junecheah,

Glad to hear that you got yourself a JRT puppy. I did not encounter such problem like yours. Hey, since you're keeping the puppy indoor, why not let him sleep with you at nite without caging him. It will be nice and warm. Then you can cage him daytime while you go to work.

Alternatively, you can cage him and put the cage next to your bed. This will help him to quiet down and he can see you sleep too.

Otherwise, if you leave him alone in the cage where he cannot see you or any creature at nite, I am sure he will bark because he is scare to be left alone. To solve this problem, you need to provide him with a lot of exercise before bedtime. You need to place some toys too inside his cage at nite. And when the barking starts in the middle of the nite, pls don't attend to him cause it will become his habit. You need to be persistent. Make this bedtime a routine for him and when he grows up he will learn to accept his cage as his bed. If the problem still persists, you can talk to one forum member, djoecool for her solution.

Just for license want to do this and that.. and my neighbor hates us so much because of the dogs.. Where they will sign right? Unless I fake their signature... Anyway, just keep quiet and hope they will never come and check "lo"... I hate it.. Cats don't need anything like this... SO troublesome...

Re: [dmax] Jack russel terrier vs silky terrier

Thanks for the advice dmax, We have tried many ways to calm him down. Maybe he is not used to environment as his has another sister with him during his time in the petshop. That's why he kinda lonely now. He now slightly much better now as we don;t really bark whenever he is inisde his cage. He is now sleeping outside of his cage everynite. We are trying to trained to pee and poo in his cage so that we can leave him outside his cage for often..

Vicfion, we only cage him at nite when we sleep. He is mostly outside during the day time. The reason why we want to sleep in the cage is because he wants somebody to accompany him at nite. I will have to sleep in the sofa then only he will follow me sleep. I can bring him to the room to sleep as he tend to pee and poo around. He just need companion at nite. That's we are hoping that he will try to get used of the cage or learn to pee and poo on the disignated area..Shocked

Hmmm...

Sounds like he just needed a little time to adjust to the new surroundings. Tongue

Anyway, time for house-breaking training! Remember to reprimand him (give voice signals like "hait") to remind him where to pee and poo if you catch him doing it at the wrong spot!

BTW, remember to have him vaccinated according to schedule as per advice from the vet too. Anyway, hope to see you one day at future gatherings with your furkid! Oh yea, does your new furkid have a name? TongueTongue

Take care.

A good tip, do not CODDLE or REASSURE your pup when he is shivering with the vet, it would only make him more fearful of the vet. Anyway, after the visit, give a treat or play a very fun game with him. Associate the vet visit with positive association. Laugh

Yah normally it's better to wait 1 to 2 weeks after the jab before bringing her out (for the vaccine to take effect).

Nevermind lar this round cannot there'll be another round Smile

Hi, sure silkies win! If it is the male sure bully the JRT! My pup can even bully me! Almost compared 2 the JRT, the silky also have the same lifestyle! So who u vote?
