Re: [kesuke] help! hot spots/losing hair

First of all, u have to stop him from licking. You can get an e-collar for this...or perhaps put some "fung yeow" near the area. Animals don't like that smell..but careful not to get it on the wound.

Once that has been accomplished, u'll hv to get medication. I think there are some home-made herbal remedies...but i can't remember the recipe. For my dog's hot spot i used medication prescribed by my vet. Best to ask the si fu's for the recipe.

not sure abt the balding spot though......

Re: [kesuke] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hi ...

"Hot spots" or "lick granulomas" ??? ... Although either can appear anywhere on the body ... hot spots are usually localised and not spread out all over the dog (the legs & paws tend to be common areas for hot spots)... Both tend to appear as open weeping sores ... sometimes with pus ... with bad smell ...

Both can be caused by bacterial, fungal, yeast or parasitic infection ... or by allergies ... that causes a local itchy area ... triggering a "itch & lick/scratch" cycle ...

Just a few questions:

(a) When did Billy see the vet?

(b) Has your vet done any blood-test or skin scraping?

(c) How long have you used Malaseb? ... Describe how you apply Malaseb?

(d) Have you changed Billy's diet lately? Or given new brand of treats? Are you giving raw-hide treats?

(e) What is Billy's condition like - active as usual?

In the meantime ...

I agree with RealityDreamer ... first thing to do is to stop the licking & scratching ...

Maybe you can try this ...

(a) Wash your dog - Use a herbal (aloevera, tea-tree) or oatmeal based shampoo (make sure to dry Billy well) ...

(b) Then prepare a mild salt or lemon solution (check cshellz's thread on mange) (but add a dash of apple cider vinegar to the solution) and rinse the doggie twice a day ... After each application - remember to towel dry, do not keep the dog damp ...

Use a e-collar (cone-collar) if you have to - to prevent further scratching.

Hopefully this will help ease the itchiness until you can identify the cause of the rashes.

If you find any raw, scratched areas or pustules ... then you will need to prevent or control bacterial infection of the skin ... Dap some iodine ... this will sting but is very effective ... We prefer using iodine than cream.

If the condition does not improve over the next few days ... then see a good vet ...

Cheers

Re: [surchinmy] help! hot spots/losing hair

hi
sorry for replying late..
i think billy has hot spots..they're near the base of his tail and on his tail..no pus no bad smell whatsoever..just reddish
btw, what's 'lick granulomas'?

in answer to your questions:
(a) When did Billy see the vet?
in mid-july once and the 1st week of sept

(b) Has your vet done any blood-test or skin scraping?
nope

(c) How long have you used Malaseb? ... Describe how you apply Malaseb?
about 4 times..once a week. well i mix 50 ml of malaseb to a 500ml mineral water bottle, then i apply malaseb on billy after wetting him, massaging into his skin and leave for about 10 mintues before rinsing off.

(d) Have you changed Billy's diet lately? Or given new brand of treats? Are you giving raw-hide treats?
haven't really changed billy's diet..he's on eukanuba currently but i'm going to switch him to canidae..gave him some "zukes liver treat" but don't think it's becoz of this...not giving rawhide treats

(e) What is Billy's condition like - active as usual?
yep, still active as usual..

thanks for the washing tip..will tell my bro to do that..
just wish that i could go back to see him..FrownFrown

so.....what do you think caused the hot spots?

Re: [kesuke] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hello ... Smile

Hot spots and lick granulomas ... or acral lick dermatitis are different names for essentially the same condition ...

Check out these sites for more information:

www.aztecanimalclinic.com/lick_gran.htm
www.skinvet.com/diseasedetail.asp?index=2

Hot spots occurs when a dog has a compulsion to lick a particular spot ... so much so that a lesion actually appears ... (which can be painful) ...

Trying to discover why the dog started to lick that particular spot can be a bit tricky ...

-------------------------------------------------
" ... There is not agreement on the reason that some dogs develop this compulsion to lick. There are three basic views on the subject. Some see it as a primary skin disorder. Some see it as a behavioral problem, and some see it as a neurologic disease involving the nerves in the area. It is likely that most lick granulomas have more than one cause or a single cause with one or more contributing problems ..."
----------------------------------------------------

But since your vet did not do any tests ... it is not possible to rule out possible infection of some sort ... bacterial or parasitic ... some infections can cause lesions very similar to hot spots ...

Will suggest that you take Billy to a good vet who will spend time tp properly examine Billy ...

In the meantime ... I'd repeat what I posted before really ...

Just a few thoughts:

*** Dogs can develop start licking cycles (and creating hot spots) because they are stressed or bored ... If Billy is missing you - that might be the trigger for stress ...

*** Malaseb isn't quite the shampoo I'd be using on a dog week in and week out ... it's too strong for that ...

*** If you use Malaseb because Billy is constantly itching ... then I'd really suggest that it might be time to have a long serious think about how to go about implimenting a systematic long term plan to (a) find the cause/s of the itching ... (b) determine the best way to improve Billy's condition, whether it's finding a good vet, improving nutrition etc Smile ...

All the best ... Smile

hi..Smile
i'm home now..finally..get to see billy again..yayy..Laugh but his skin prob is getting worse..FrownFrown
i noticed that he's starting to smell..the skin on his rear end are all reddish under his hair..and he's chewing on his tail as well..there's 1 lesion beside his tail, about the size of a 20 cent..Unsure
yes i notice that malaseb is quite strong and i don't use it becoz billy is itching..it's what the vet recommended to me when i took billy to see him..but no improvement so far..
for now i'll start on the oatmeal shampoo and then the lemon solution. hopefully he'll get well.
btw the lemon solution you suggested..it's the mild one right? and i can squirt fresh lemon juice on his affected area?
also i think maybe it's becoz of the ticks on his body that's causing him to itch (an allergy maybe?).. such a pain in the a** trying to get rid of all those pesky things..FrownFrownCrazy
maybe starting him on raw might be a good idea too?

Re: [kesuke] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hello ...

Suggest the first thing to do is try and narrow down the possible causes for the rashes, hotspots, itching ... etc ...

This thread seems to have moved from possible allergy ... to mange ... to hot spots ... to tick infection/allergy ... While these possible causes may overlap ... we may all be missing something quite crucial ... Very hard to say without seeing dog.

Also trying to many different remedies may not be such a good idea ... with skin condition the usual way is to try and eliminate causes ... if you try to many solutions or change too many things at one time then it can become more difficult to identify actual cause of condition ...

Please take your dog to a "good" vet and get proper examination & tests done ...

------------------------------------------------------
Please read earlier posting above:

" ... But since your vet did not do any tests ... it is not possible to rule out possible infection of some sort ... bacterial or parasitic ... some infections can cause lesions very similar to hot spots ...

Hi ...

Lemon solution smells good ... makes the doggies smell like sunshine on a sunny day ... great temptation to use lemon solution all over the dog ... Blush ...

But we found that the lemon solution seemed to dry out the coat ... so, we only use on affected areas ... Smile

Re: [surchinmy, realitydreamer] help! hot spots/losing hair

hi

i have taken billy to see the vet this morning...this vet is recommended by friends...
so the result is: the doc said the skin prob was caused by fungal infection (mostly on his hind legs and under his belly...the hair is thinning there)..
i told him i suspected flea allergy (coz billy keeps chewing his tail and rear ends and the symptoms appear to coincide with flea allergy) and maybe mange/mites....but he said it's fungal...
the reason he ruled out flea allergy is that he said if billy were infested with fleas he won't be looking this good (billy's only losing hair on hind legs and belly..otherwise he's still good looking)
he did a skin scrape from billy's ear (i find that weird...should be from billy's leg ain't it?) and found it's tick instead... and he insisted billy's prob is caused by fungal when i asked him to scrape from billy's legs..
neeway, he gave billy a tick/flea collar (is this safe and effective? doc says it's good for up to 4 months), anti-fungi tablets, cod liver oil capsules and a shampoo to bathe billy (can't remember the shampoo's name...starts with 'I' though...said to bathe every 5 to 7 days) he also advises us to bring billy back after 2 weeks....

so what do you think? is it ok if i use the lemon solution on billy's hind quarters? should i try feeding billy raw too?
would really appreciate your feedback...Smile thank you!

Re: [kesuke, RealityDreamer, Hunter, minglmy, cshellz] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hi ... Smile

Before I start - please remember I have not seen Billy ... and that makes it hard - will just do best I can.

---------------------------------------------------

Flea allergy : Although I am not sure I understand the vet's reasoning that Billy cannot have flea allergy because Billy looks too good ... uh? ...

If you catch an allergy early enough - Billy will still look good neh - Even in the worse type of allergies the symptoms are progressive, and you don't progress from good looking dog to a fur-less dog in one short jump ...

But nevertheless ... unless you have actually seen fleas on Billy - maybe we can rule out flea allergy ...

So far, I don't recall you mentioning any fleas on Billy ... Fleas are small but can be seen by the naked eye ... they are like little black dots that jump ... *urgh* ...

---------------------------------------------------

You say: " ... he did a skin scrape from billy's ear (i find that weird...should be from billy's leg ain't it?) and found it's tick instead... and he insisted billy's prob is caused by fungal when i asked him to scrape from billy's legs ..."

Sorry ... but don't quite understand the above ... Do you mean the following?

(A) That FIRST ... the vet took and examined a scraping from Billy's ears (which has no red/hot spots) and said its "tick" ...

But what does that mean? Does vet mean tick infestation or tick allergy or both?

(B) Then SECOND ... when you asked the vet to take a scraping from Billy's legs (where the red/hot spots are) ... vet examined this second scraping and changed his mind - and said that Billy has fungal infection?

So, did vet say Billy have tick infestation/tick allergy AND fungal infection? ... Or did vet rule out flea/tick problems altogether and say that Billy only has fungal infection?

This is kinda confusing because - if the vet ruled out flea/tick issue - then why the tick collar?

Is he prescribing the tick collar just as a precaution?

---------------------------------------------------

Tick collars: Personally, we are not keen on tick collars ... they contain a very high concentration of insecticide (almost always toxic in nature) that is released consistently and regularly over the dog ... Check the label and ingredients ... If using tick collar - make sure dog doesn't get a chance to chew the collar ...

We prefer to use FrontLine as tick prevention. It's slightly more expensive - but very effective against ticks & fleas, our dogs tolerate the ingredients well ... and we control the amount that goes on the dog ...

By combining FrontLine and the giving of raw/natural garlic in food ... with very regular inspection of the dog ... we find that we can control ticks with the minimim application of chemical products ...

---------------------------------------------------

Fungal infection

Dogs can get fungal infections (from mild seborrhea to ringworm) ... Please ask vet what kind of fungal infection he suspects.

If it's ringworm - then you have to be more careful, because it can spread to people.

Check websites for infomation:

http://www.ivis.org/...chapter_frm.asp?LA=1

http://www.petalia.com.au/...gs&story_no=1628

Most vets these days ... prescribe oral medication together with a medicated shampoo to combat fungal infections.

What shampoo did vet prescribe?

We find Malaseb & Sebolux Medicated Shampoos to be effective. But you are already using Malaseb right?

---------------------------------------------------

Question: " ... so what do you think? is it ok if i use the lemon solution on billy's hind quarters? should i try feeding billy raw too? ..."

While the lemon solution is a good general cleansing agent and seems effective against mange ... I am not sure if it's all that effective an remedy for fungal infection. Maybe Neem oil is better. Neem oil is a known as a general fungicide ...

Veterinarians’ Guide to Natural Remedies – Martin Zucker : Neem oil: Use a washcloth soaked in warm water to cleanse the affected areas. Then gently rub the Neem oil into the skin morning and evening. Caution: Do not use the Neem oil around the eyes. If using concentrated Neem oil - then dilute in olive oil. Do a test on a small spot and make sure the dog is okay with the Neem oil solution.

Improving nutrition is always a good idea ... but maybe don't go raw right now (especially if Billy is not used to raw foods) ... don't overstress Billy, when he is not so well ...

Add freshly cooked foods to Billy's diet instead of raw ... Fresh cooked meats, fresh blended fruits ... and a good skin supplement (linoelic acid and/or lecithin). Cod liver oil suggested by vet is good.

Maybe check with Riccaval for good natural/herbal skin supplement.

---------------------------------------------------

(A) Go with FrontLine to prevent flea/tick infestation ... as a precaution. Check garden/house to remove fleas & ticks. If you don't do this then re-infectation is more than likely.

(B) Treat for fungal infection (tablets given by vet).

(C) Use correct antifungal shampoo (Malaseb or Sebolux Medicated) as support medication. You can use diluted Neem oil on the affected spots.

(D) Improve nutrition to increase immunity.

(E) Give proper skin supplements, to assist dog.

Finally ... fungal infections take time to clear up ... treatment and remedies require consistent application.

Cheers

Re: [serene_kwlim] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hello ...

Assuming that your GSD is just undergoing coat changes because of shedding (without any other issue) -there are a host of supplements which tb are good for the skin & coat ...

The usual skin & coat supplements will be things like ... Brewers Yeast, evening primrose oil, balanced omega 3 & 6, linoleic acid, sunflower oil, flaxseed oil, lecithin, kelp etc ...

I'm not really familiar with the ready mix skin & coat supplements ... so cannot comment ...

The only skin supplement we like & use is Keepers Mix and that is available from the forum or Riccaval ... we find this quite effective & helpful ... A dash of Brewers Yeast is also good.

Along with supplements ... we find reducing intake of wheat & soya (using rice & oats as alternatives), minimising intake of chemical preservatives, and adding fresh olive oil ... to be helpful.

Cheers Smile

Re: [surchinmy] help! hot spots/losing hair

hi there

yes i know you haven't seen billy..i just want to know what you think. Smile

"Flea allergy : Although I am not sure I understand the vet's reasoning that Billy cannot have flea allergy because Billy looks too good ... uh? ...

If you catch an allergy early enough - Billy will still look good neh - Even in the worse type of allergies the symptoms are progressive, and you don't progress from good looking dog to a fur-less dog in one short jump ... "

flea allergy: yeah, that's what i thought when the vet said that..mabye the allergy is in the early stage..
hmm..i don't think i've actually seen fleas on billy..ticks yes..but fleas..maybe not.. but i do notice that there're 'colonial' black spots on his back..are these tick eggs? i know baby ticks are tiny red spots that walk..

"he did a skin scrape from billy's ear (i find that weird...should be from billy's leg ain't it?) and found it's tick instead... and he insisted billy's prob is caused by fungal when i asked him to scrape from billy's legs ..."

sorry to make you confused about that statement..
first the vet examined billy's legs and said that it's fungal infection. then i told him i suspected flea allergy/mange/mites.. and asked if he could do a skin scrape. so the vet said ok and did a scraping from billy's ear, which is perfectly fine and clean. then after he looked through his microscope, he said it's ticks, not mite. he let me looked through the microscope and it's really ticks.
then i said could you do a scraping from his legs? (coz his ears are fine and his legs ain't) but he said no need, it's fungal infection.
then i also told him that billy has ticks..and he said tick/flea not much trouble to get rid of...so he gave billy a tick collar..

personally i don't like tick collars too..just doesn't sound good to me...am thinking of getting frontline and ditching the collar...is that advisable? i've used frontline on billy before and he's alright..

thanks for the websites..i'll check them out. and i'll also ask the vet what fungal infection he suspects. as for the shampoo..i'll also have to ask him again coz i don't remember the name...just that it starts with an "i". i've already stopped using malaseb coz i don't see any improvement after using it.

so where can i get neem oil? pharmacies?
am giving billy freshly cooked food now..also feeding him hair growth with biotin and zinc..also feeding garlic.. any other vitamins/minerals i missed out?

thank you once again! i really appreciate it. Smile
billy says thanks too...woof woof!!

Re: [kesuke] help! hot spots/losing hair

Hi ...

Here are pixs of ticks ... http://entomology.ucdavis.edu/...bkimsey/caticks.html

"Black spots" on Billy's back??? ... Ticks lay their eggs in cracks & crevices and not on dogs ... but what are these black spots? Did the vet see them? Can these dots be removed with your finger? ...

Sorry I still don't understand ... why do you and vet need micsroscope to see ticks? ... Was the scraping taken from the inside of Billy's ears? ...

I would personally use FrontLine instead of tick collar.

Neem oil/solution may be found in pharmacies ... please get those without perfume or scents ... get pure or natural Neem oil/solution ... Follow instructions, and if pure Neem oil, you need to dilute.

Cannot say what vitamins may or may not be missing without full description of diet ... As for supplements ... until you are more familiar with individual nutrients - suggest you go for ready blended supplements that provide overall support.

Check this forum at http://shop.puppy.com.my/products.asp?id=50 for Keepers Mix (it's a good natural overall supplement for skin & coat).
