"Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

am helping my friend to post this article up about animal testing which i think it's so wrong !!!Mad

How many people would ever guess that frightened, lonely dogs and cats are
confined to tiny barren cages in laboratories for years on end and have horrible
things done to them, just to test "pet food"? Are these tests necessary? No. Are
they required by law? No. Do they cause animal suffering? They certainly do.

Compassionate consumers reject the confinement and mistreatment of dogs and cats
used in nutritional studies. They People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (
PETA ) to do all they can to get animals out of laboratories exactly like the
one that was recently uncovered in an investigation involving animals used for
IXmX and for Menu Foods, a Canadian company that makes canned dog and cat food
for sale to large chain stores under private label agreements.

PETA have asked both IXmX and Menu Foods to stop all laboratory testing, to
which IXmX said is impossible. But they know it isn’t.

Like IXmX and many other “pet” food manufacturers, Menu Foods conducts tests to
measure the “metabolic energy” of dog and cat food. Such tests are inherently
cruel because they involve severe confinement in stainless-steel metal cages.
PETA’s undercover investigation at a testing laboratory with which Menu Foods
contracts found countless examples of cruelty and neglect.

During the tests, dogs and cats are forced to live in cold, hard, barren
stainless-steel cages with no toys or beds. PETA’s investigator took video
footage of animals circling endlessly in their cages, suffering the severe
effects of lack of stimulation, exercise, and socialization. Metabolic cages are
approximately the size of a cage that your vet might use for animals recovering
from surgery. Imagine keeping your companion animal in such a cage day after
day, year after year! You wouldn’t do it. But Menu Foods dogs had no choice and
virtually no life.

PETA’s investigator called a researcher at Menu Foods and asked if the animals
could have some toys but was told, “If you give them toys, they are going to
have higher activity and [this] will affect the [metabolic energy] result.” He
even went so far as to tell our investigator that the protocol doesn’t call for
toys!

These miserable animals were not given adequate exercise, either. The dogs were
only “exercised” in the galleyway on wet and often filthy concrete on the days
when their feces were not collected for the study, and the cats never received
any exercise at all. They were simply stored in small carriers while their cages
were cleaned.

To view pictures taken or a video of the investigation ( 2002 - 2003 ), log on
to www.iamsodead.com/iams-photos.html and
www.iamsodead.com/iams-video.html respectively.

IXmX, which also makes EXXaXaXa, is not the only company that uses animals in
laboratories for feeding trials. For a list of pet food companies that DO NOT
test on animals, go to www.iamsodead.com/food.html . Thank you in
advance for not supporting animal-tested pet food companies - your companion
animal(s) will too.

hi,

it's really horrible. wonder where'd they get all the dogs to torture? who knows, maybe some were once happy dogs that were dognapped by them evil people.

metabolic studies in excuse for not providing toys and exercise? that's so pathetic. how sad, how sad.

exactly ... i think animal testing is so wrong... they even try cosmetic stuff on animals to see whether there's any side effect before they let it out to the market for human to buy it. but think about it. human and animals are different and if animals pass the test it doesn't matter it will work on human !! damn those people there!! i got this from a friend who's err a member in http://www.peta.com. she studies in the same college as me and were telling me about this and i told her i would help her post this up in the forum and so she wrote this whole article up. as far as i know that's the only 2 brands that are using animal for testing so far. for pet food that is.

there are other things that they use animal to test whether it's safe or not then only release it to the market.

food and beverages - CriXXo, SuXXX DeXXXXt, FolXXXs do use animal for testing too.

Hair Care - HeXX & XXXulXer, PXXtXXX, VXXal SXXXXN

Skin Care - CleXrXXXl, OiX OX OXXX and etc

this products were also using animal to test whether it's safe for human too .. there are more but just too lazy to type all out ... ahhahaa Smile

well u and me and everybody combine here is not big enouhg a voice to tell them to stop this loh
all we can do is b4 buying a product check whehter it states that no animal testing has been done.
some product has it some dont..
so its really the consumers choice.....
ppl will still buy the products if they need it
if u say some fast food rest. serving fried chicken is cruel then u dont go there..but how true is this article u got there

This is very sad. But what we can do to stop them is stop buying those products that don't state 'this product not tested on animals.'

The brand I know that state they don't test on animals are BXDX SHXP, St. XvXs

yeah, most products do not state that whether they do animal testing for their products at all ... that is why PETA is here ... PETA investigates about animal testing everywhere and every product and tries to persuade them not to use animals for their products testing. i've got a list of products that are so far found using animal testing but jsut couldn't post it all up !! Hi,
I, too, didn't believe the PETA accusation. I thought it was some dirty competition trick form other dog food company. U know, bad publications so that peopl boycott the products...Mad
But after several web research, just knew that PETA is independent non-profits organisation with no1 involved but pure heart people who want to help poor animals Smile

well wat bout those animals for testing on drugs?
do they come under all this er animal testing
liek rats n chicks n guinea pigs?
cos for me also once there this physiology project
we had to use guinea pig's ileum(intestines) and chick biventar(er chicks nerves behind the neck) to test the nerves being stimulated loh?
all this to find out wat receptor this n that so we know wat drugs to administer in patients?
if we dun do on them then do on humans?
this is a dilemma for science loh....i dun think its cruelty to animals if it helps ppl

hello people...

would like to point out something...beside pet food industry, there is actually another party who is exploiting dogs.you see, some dogs are trained to service the community...young selected pups are trained to conduct specific tasks depending on their breed.. sniffer dogs, rescue dogs, and police canine force just to name a few...these dogs are put into danger whenever crisis happens..they might be hurted since they are dealing with cold-blooded criminals and etc...but did you know those recovered from their injuries but cannot perform as good as before, are put to sleep..same goes to those which reached their retirement age...all because of high maintainance..these dogs are not allowed to be adopted since they are trained in a special way which required special handling, unpredictable and sometime they can be very aggressive which make them unsuitable to be kept as normal house pet...

Re: [icezcream] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

hello,

i've just watched Top Dogs just now, and regarding the issue you've brought up, things have at least began to change this time around.

the US army kennel master does admit they used to euthanize the dogs which are not fit for duty or does not reach the standard required as canine soldier. but he mentioned that those dogs have life and they deserve to live. Hence, they have this adoption program where those dogs (the ones that are tested, and declared not-too-aggresive as a pet) are put up for adoption.

but as for those other dogs that are too aggresive, god knows what will happen to them :/ still, it's at least better than having ALL of them put down to sleep right?

some dogs are indeed put into danger to serve mankind. unlike other dogs, they does not have all the TLC from a normal family... play toys in a garden with kids and etc...they have to go through extensive training and work everyday. it might sound cruel but still it's all about different perspective from different people.

erm, look at the bright side, some of the service dogs are actually strays dumped by people who thinks they're not good enough. the dogs certainly had a chance to proved them wrong :)

he was in protection work..suppose to do patrolling if he passed the final test.

i think at the Dogathon 2001 there were a couple of officers who brought their dogs for a demonstration..i think they were the police though..not military.

Smilecockers are cute..i think it's not surprising..maybe they're not used that often because of their fur..if that was the case what abt the GR's ? maybe its coz of their ears?

i think they chose cockers coz they're smaller..eat less..and cheaper to maintain in general.

Re: [RealityDreamer] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

oh. but seriously, in my opinion, most often military dogs, especially those in protection work, are too aggresive to be a pet :/ i mean, sure, they'd be loyal and loving to u, but what about others? have the dog actually got aggresive to other ppl outside your family before?

but they'd make a really good guard dog though.

normally those that go about for demonstration are police officers. once they came to my brother's secondary school for demo too. and they're all GSDs.

as for why they chose cockers, dunno. maybe it's because of size like u said. i also wonder, those fire dept. dogs, normally they're all black color - black labs, black cockers.

maybe so that they still look neat and tidy despite going through piles and piles of burnt rubbles :/

unfortunately, you are right..he was very aggressive to everyone, except the family, not to mention extremely strong.to us, he was like your typical pet. in the morning, sees us, he'll wag his lil stump and when it's time for walks,he'll be jumping and running around with excitement. he even lies on his back for belly rubs.

like u said, he was an extremely good guard dog. at night, he would patrol the perimeter every night every hour or so..*sigh* now that we started talking abt him, kinda miss him Unsure

anyway, nvr really noticed the colour of the fire department dogs..are they the same as the search and rescue dogs? only they're mainly used to search at fire sites? or they search for chemicals used to start fires?

yeah...agree with you they are more dog-conscious now..at least they are using dogs in some rescue departments...

our government boleh tahan la....you should have a look at the current situation in Hong Kong...the HK government enforced some stupid rules...those living in apartments/flat/condo are forced to give up their pets...many ended up on the street and a number are put to sleep.....

Re: [icezcream,JolinG] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

they should appreciate dogs moreMad they save millions of dollars every year internationally in so many different ways!

as for that 1 dog 1 hse rule..i thought i was still being enforced and me and my dogs were illegal.. Tongue

the cats poo poo also 100000x smellier than dogs' poo..wonder why they nvr complain. Dogs can also guard the house and act as watchdogs..they can also catch vermin..what abt cats? poo hear..pee there..breed here..breed there and yet the gov nvr do anything.. this is a muslim country la..if they have the same rules like the dogs.. they also will be pissed and cannot tahan the gov.MadMadMadMadMadMad

Re: [RealityDreamer] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

the reason for why they nvr complain cats but complain dogs is simple.

they can touch cats, but can't touch dogs. jealous we can touch our dearest furkids mah. so rather want everyone in this country not touch dogs, like them :/ how sad, how sad.

regards,
hunter

Re: [JolinG] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

I think you are right, we should vote for someone from this forum to go into run for election! if that person got elected, we can then turn this whole thing around... have more rights on dogs.. and maybe 'cat'...
If apartment cannot have more than 1 dog, then this should go to other animals as well.. including 'cat'.

To be fair mar...

Re: [drew] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

This is why I buy my stuff from "the BXdy ShXp". haha. Sorry I didn't quite get some of the brands you were refering to. If it's not too much trouble, can you email me the full list to quinalona@hotmail.com ? I am totally against animal testing and refuse to support any product that does.

I can figure out how a shampoo company uses it's product to test on animals, but how does a cosmetic company test it's lipstick and eye shadows on animals???

In Reply To
i got this from a friend who's err a member in http://www.peta.com. she studies in the same college as me and were telling me about this and i told her i would help her post this up in the forum and so she wrote this whole article up. as far as i know that's the only 2 brands that are using animal for testing so far. for pet food that is.

there are other things that they use animal to test whether it's safe or not then only release it to the market.

food and beverages - CriXXo, SuXXX DeXXXXt, FolXXXs do use animal for testing too.

Re: [JolinG] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

I wasn't that lucky. Each pair in my zoology class had to kill a cat for study. We were even given additional points if the cat had fetuses. Sick..real sick.

i knowUnsure

Re: [JolinG] "Pet" Food Industry : Lay Off the Animals!

the other time during my bio lesson, there's this bunny still very much alive in a cage during the morning. Later in the afternoon when we go for our physic lesson(next lab nia), when we passed the bio lab, the bunny is already on the dissecting board...so sad as we just fed the bunny in the morning and its dead just after a few hours...
