looking for good guard dog...any suggestion??

i am looking for a dog as patner and as a guard dog because i just move in to a new house with big compound.... any suggestion from all master here?? which breed should i get?? hope to get some info here.... thanks in advance...

actually i am looking on behalf of my family. My father will be main responsible person to take care of the dog, he just retired from work last 2 year....now normally just do some own gardening at home.....

If your dad likes dogs and would spend time walking and even train it in Obedience then I would suggest a female doberman, if not a female rottie they will be fantastic watch dog and very loyal. Male dogs can be handful as they may challenge the authority, not aggressive against owner but may refuse to do response to commands and if this happens to often you may have a "loose canon".

hi there,I agree with PSY on this matter...i would also suggest to you to get a female pup coz they are more easy to train than the male ones.my bf and i bought a female rottweiler,then 6 weeks.She is now more trainable and very obedient also friendly and very loving.We love her alot.hehee...

hehee...bullmastiff?i've never had a bullmastiff before.do take your time to find the puppy that is suitable for you esp. its temperament and make sure to see his/her parents before buying...all the best to you! Wink

A Rottie might be too much for your father to handle if he is an older man. Don't necessarily think that size makes the best watch dog. You must be very careful of whatever pup you choose as some of the backyard breedeers do not take temperament into account when they breed. You do not want an aggressive dog - you should choose a dog that will bark and alert you to problems. Most thieves will not enter a house where the dog will bark an alarm.

A lot of people think that the bigger and fiercer the dog the better. Not so. Your father also needs a dog as a companion while he is at home. I can think of many breeds that will fit that description. Please be careful where you obtain your pup if you do decide to get a Rottie or Dobe.

I would recommend a Boxer. They have a short coat which means you don't have to do a lot of grooming. They are a compact breed and they are a family dog. They look ferocious but are very good natured. However I can only stress that you please get your dog from a reputable breeder and not a pet shop. Pet shops have no background on the puppies they sell and have no idea what kind of temperament the parents have.

You might want to contact the SPCA. They sometimes have dogs there that are pure bred dogs. You can tell them what you are looking for - in other words a Boxer or some other breed. But to be honest, there are many dogs that need a good home. Of the 5 dogs I have - two Great Danes, 1 Pit Bull, 1 French Bulldog, the little mongrel that was a stray is the best watchdog. She barks when necessary and that's really all you need in a watch dog. In fact as I write this (it's 6 am and still dark) she is outside barking at someone walking down the street while my Great Dane is sleeping on his bed here beside me.

chialing08, u can try german shepard as well...nice dog and easy to train like dobi... there is another dog which is very smart , border collie. It can be a guard dog as well. Don't judge the lookf of the dog, they are a working dog, companion dog and also can be train to guard. Smile

Your description of Boxer as guard dog suits my requirement. However, I am living in intermediate house with small garden (about 352 sf), is this space too small for boxer?

lad to be of help. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of Boxer breeders in Malaysia. (I showed Boxers for almost 30 years in the US.) However I would recommend that you contact the Malaysian Kennel Club. They are sure to have the names and phone numbers of some good breeders. If you are a woman I would recommend a male dog. And if you are a man I would recommend a female. This is because the males attach themselves strongly to the women in the household and vice versa. However either sex should be spayed or neutered as soon as old enough. Do not teach the dog to be aggresive. These dogs have a good guarding instinct and you don't want to go overboard.

Forgot to add....... as long as you make the effort to take your dog out for a walk every day, then the small area should be no problem. I am presuming that the dog will live in the house. In my opinion it isn't fair to relegate the dog to living outdoors. Dogs are amazingly faithful and true companions and should be part of the family. There is always then a closer bond with the family or owner. Please take your dog for at least one walk a day. He/she should get exercise to help build a strong healthy dog. Treat him/her as a member of the family and you can ask for no greater friend. My heart goes out to all those dogs who are kept outside and whose owners never experience the wonderful bond that can be formed with a dog. The most faithful companion on this earth.....

If recommended by the then they should all be reputable breeders. Do specify that you do not want a dog to show, but rather that you want a pet quality. The show dogs are the most expensive. A pet quality would be just as good but maybe because of coloring or some other aspect would not do well in the show ring. It would still be a well bred dog. When a litter is born there are usually one or two that are show quality and the rest are very well bred pet quality. This much better than buying from a pet store where you have no idea what quality you are getting. A reputable breeder takes many things into consideration before he/she breeds, i.e., type, color, temperament, etc.

Housebreaking is usually quite easy. Just a few things to remember and it's not a big problem. Do keep us informed and have fun with your new puppy when you get him/her.

Point to remember, Boxers suffer fron "heat srtroke" so not much fun if you are the out goinf type whereby you like the dog next to you whenever possible.

If time is not an issue and your family loves dogs, get a dob (female) and please expose your children to it when you take a pup home. Do get it from a reputable breeder, check out MKA list and visit at least three of them, then decide, if not a slightly longer hair would be a Rottie (female) again. OB training is essential for these breeds.

I am keeping a belgium shepherd(malinois) now.. and she makes excellent guard dog...

Instruder cannot even walk one step closer to my house.

However, pls take note that this dog needs to be handled with care and you need to be really "strong" and firm in commands. Otherwise, they can be dangerous to guests and even members of your family. Do not leave the dog unleash when you are out or even let the kids (who never seen her) to touch her.

In addition, she is affliationate and she is very obedient. i have kept many dogs before and none has such good temperament as her.

You are looking for a good guard/watch dog, go for a doberman, it does not bark like a GSD.... GSD are shepherd so when they hear a noise that is not familiar it will bark, unlike a dob, they are more seeing eye dog. A rottie too is good. Read and know your breed so you will be able to determine a breed that will suit the task you wish it to do. As for GR, they do not make good guard/watch dog but they do bark at strangers. I know a great litter of GR available.

Rotties are great at not barking indiscrimnately, in fact very silent, more of a watch & attack type. But I would be wary of having a rottie with children & toy dogs unless owner is a stay-at-home person to keep watch. Rotties are very prey driven and small animals/children would be irresistable for a good chase and due to their size & strength, may cause injuries. However, they are not untrainable but very active participation by owners are needed and definitely rotties are not to be chained or locked up as this will make them very aggressive.
