bad impression in PAWS

i hav been to PAWS today. the dogs at there so cute!! but unfortunely, the volunteers @ workers at there is making me sick! they gav me a bad impression bout them. they just seems like not welcoming us.[:/] they shows the moodiest face to us, not receiving our questions, they dont even wanted to answer our questions. & the thing that really make me sick is they doesnt take good care of the sanitation at there. i just saw the worker throw his cigarette on the floor pretenting like nothing happen! what could possible will happening to the pets at there if the cigarette burns down that place? [nono] i just couldnt imagine it. i hope they will improve their services in the future. for the goods of the pets at there.

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

Sorry to hear you weren't happy with your visit. Perhaps you met someone who is actually there to care for the animals and not expected to deal with visitors. If you knew PAWS before you might appreciate how much has improved these past 10 months and how much happier and healthier the animals are, although of course there is still much work to be done.

Anyway, if you should visit again please go to the office first and see if anyone is free to show you around. But please keep in mind that PAWS gets many, many visitors and often several hundred on weekend days so it's not possible to give everyone the individual or prompt attention we might like. With such a huge crowd priority goes to those wishing to choose an animal.

At PAWS we know we have much more to improve but with few paid staff we rely mostly on Volunteer help. The more volunteers who step forward, the more we can achieve. We are always open to constructive criticism but if the suggestion comes from someone who is also willing to give hands-on help, all the better. If you are interested to sign up and volunteer yourself, please give a call and arrange to meet our Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah (who is herself a volunteer).

Tel PAWS Office 78461087 9am-4pm. Thanks!

Hey there..

pls don't be discouraged to lend PAWS a hand when u have the time. The animals there need our help. We should set aside our differences and go there for the animals Unimpressed The humans can treat us however they want, but its the joy of seeing the happy animals that gets me going. i love it everytime i set foot in PAWSSmile like liz said, they have renovated the place and it looks very good now

cheers

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

Maybe you encountered bad expereince but I can tell you, so far only PAWS doesn't euthanize dogs. They keep as long as they can...unlike others they put the dog to sleep after certain period of time. Or, the less cute one or they think no potential for adoption, they will gun-shot to death. See, like that call "caring for animal"...I dont think so. I have been to a few animal welfare, only PAWS doesn't euthanize dogs. AND, only PAWS take in stray puppies or dogs. If you bring to SPCA-Penang, they will not bothered you. Well....we go to these welfare to do good deed...not to get mad with the people. Just, ignore them.,..we go there to help the animals, not the people!

Re: [phekling19] bad impression in PAWS

I have been to PAWS to voluntarily help out. People there are quite ok. There is this lady called Stella I think, She is a nice lady as she gave us (me and my brother) a tour inside PAWS. She explain many things to us. So I find that place ok. The workers are fine too.

Been to SPCA, the staff there are worst than PAWS I think but that is my own experience.

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

I too had a bad experience with the staff at the office last year. As a result I no longer entered the office. When I visit PAWS, I'll just go straight to the dogs, bypassing the office. You'll die of second-hand smoking if you enter the office often. The people at the office are most important because they are the first persons the public come in contact with at PAWS. Something for the management to think about. Thank you.

Re: [hoyf] bad impression in PAWS

Hi

We appreciate the feedback but please don't allow past bad impressions to give you a negative view that lasts forever. Last year is a very long time ago in the ever-changing face of PAWS.

The PAWS office has been a No Smoking zone all this year. Much has changed throughout the shelter. Much has improved. Among these = we now have two vets on staff and can proudly say that EVERY ANIMAL ADOPTED FROM PAWS IS DEWORMED, VACCINATED AND NEUTERED.

Of course there is also still much to do, for which we will always rely heavily on volunteer input.
All help is appreciated. Feedback is good but offers to help us improve are even better!

Thanks,
Liz

Dear Liz,

Of course I still go to PAWS and advertise PAWS to prospective adopters. I only have the dogs at heart. I will not let the human aspect kill my spirit to help out at PAWS. Thank you Liz for your concerns about PAWS.

Re: [goldilock] bad impression in PAWS

PAWS MEMBERSHIP

Hi and thanks for your interest in supporting PAWS!
You ask about benefits of being a life member. There are three ways to be a PAWS member - junior (annual) or adult (annual or life)
Membership benefits to you may increase in future but at present the main ones are -
You receive our newsletters to keep you updated with PAWS and related animal news (after years of no newsletters we are now producing several each year). Being an adult member also means you will be invited to our AGM (Annual General Meeting) which is when each new Committee is chosen and PAWS Society concerns are discussed. This gives you a voice within PAWS!
But most of all - being a member is to BENEFIT THE ANIMALS!!! It means we have people who care what happens to PAWS, who care what happens to our shelter and the animals in it, and are part of our network of regular supporters. A life membership means you can, over the years, have a chance to better understand local animal welfare issues and be part of the solution! And knowing you are trying to make things better is the best 'benefit' of all!
I hope you will join us...FrownFrownFrown

Re: [goldilock] bad impression in PAWS

I have heard too many complaints about the SPCA reception staff especially about this Indian with short & curly hair, plump lady. I have to admit that I shared the same experience last year.

Thus, if this still occurs and you still wish to make complaints, whether it's about the SPCA, PAWS or any other Organizations that need some reformation in their practices and conducts, please contact the Registrar of Societies Malaysia, Enforcement And Prosecution Unit that can take the appropriate action. This Unit is responsible for carrying out investigations in relation to malpractices and offences committed by the societies or its office bearers and institute proceedings to charge such cases in court. The Unit also carries out surprise checks on societies and investigate complaints that are made through official channels.

Re: [Veganology] bad impression in PAWS

I don't wish to make anyone look bad. It's never my intention and I would always avoid such situation whenever possible, but any course of action that would hurt the wellbeing of any animals in the course of overall performance under a care of a certain individual or group must be looked into seriously.

Re: [kid] bad impression in PAWS

Hi kid

thanks for the support.
Just send a donation to PAWS sufficient to cover at least the cost of the car sticker plus postage to you then we can send you one.
Maybe to make it worthwhile writing the cheque you could order more for your friends too? Each sticker costs RM2. And of course any extra amount donated is always most welcome to help us care for the dogs and cats at our shelter.

Crossed Cheque payable to 'PAWS Animal Welfare Society'

and post with a letter explaining your request to

Many thanks!

hello guys,

i totally agreed with liz's comment.

as regular volunteer here at paws we're last of hands when assiting visitors.during weekens there are huge number of visitors & due to lack of volunteer's we unable to attend all of them.feel free to ask any of us or simply walk into our office if u need any asistance our you can call our office directly & fix an appointment.its easy for anyone of us to comment but when u'r actually there its a different story.i do admit we have alot of things to improve & we're working on that.if you compare paws 10months ago and the paws now-i can see we have improved 100% & we will still continue to improve.

Please see posts in this thread suggesting you order in bulk if possible, add a bit for postage, include your written request including name and address for mailing and receipt.

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

I am ever so late in replying to this topic. But I cld not resist voicing my opinion.

I went to PAWS in Subang. I am so impressed wt them. I dont know if the lady there is a volunteer but she seems to be very helpful even though I left with only buying a teeshit and two pins and so much more info about adopting a mogrel. Later my ex husband brought my daughters over, he being a difficult person was equally happy even though they told him he could not adopt the mogrel for my girls.

whilst I went to SPCA, and I totally agree that the Indian lady there is both a disgrace to humankind and to us, womenfolk. Erm.. can SPCA do something? Like spare us a minute or two on why she is there? SPCA, you know there are just so many `wrong timing' we can accept, I no longer stop for any SPCA donation campaign. I am sorry. Maybe I am not that great a dog lover...

I went to PAWS sometime in November 2006 and it was nothing as I had expected. The place was clean, the dogs looked happy and the workers and volunteers are really nice and smiley. There is this volunteering guy who tour us around, showing us the dogs and puppies, explaining their procedure and all. And they fed the dogs with dog's food! No rice, no bones... Cages were clean. Overall it's an enjoyable and experiencing visit for me!

We have a new member in our family! Her name is Jessie, a toy poodle!

bathing the dogs was funny..1 furkid steal the shampoo while i was bathing another furkid!!! ..hehehe
ther's some sad moments tho..like watching how much the puppies enjoy even just playing with the toilet roll (the cardboard part) ... imagine, things we throw away is actually precious toy to them
oh, they like treats..bring them some if you can...i gave them, n thers 1 furkid mm seh tak eat..he brings it around, while another one chase after him.
after i go back, i lecture my furkid..telling him how lucky he is !! hehe

Dear Jingle, even though the service in PAWS r a bit bad but u cant stop other ppl 2 help the helpless dogs tat had been sheltered in there. they nd ours help as much as we nd others helping hand when we're in trouble. u cant mixed up the ppl in there wif the helpless animals in there. if u urged ppl not 2 help the helpless animals & go buy a pups in the pet shop, is same as nowadays the ppl throw their parent in the old folks house & stay wif a son's tat doesnt care bout them. ( sorry for the rude. i just use its as a phrase) when we're old later, mayb our son @ daughter will do the same to us. Dogs is not same, they will loyal to us till their end. SO y not hand a helping hand by adopting a helpless dogs in the shelted rather than throw a lot of monet in buying a pups in pet shop? sometimes u will find out that the dogs in the shelted is more well behave than the pups in the pet shop.

Re: [Jingle] YOU SO FUNNY!!!

Egretus is absolutely correct. Got a problem, but don't take out your frustrations & need for revenge on the animals at PAWS. Go sort it out properly. Why punish the animals?

But, unfortunately a reasoned reply is not what Jingle is looking for.

As observed from Jingle's various posts. Jingle has a personality issue which he/shecannot handle, and so desires public support. Jingle wants to be LOVED.

To that end, Jingle hatches up this plot with his cronies.

For full story ... check out the following threads:

www.puppy.com.my/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=248516;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=last;#last

Jingle and cronies ... all register as members of Puppy.com within a day of each other to start posting & making abuse here. They way they carry one leaves doubt as to their sincerity.

Do a membership search, and suddenly it becomes apparent that JINGLE (27th Feb 2007), CHERRYPIE (28th Feb 2007.4:53 PM) & CASPER (28th Feb 2007.5:56 PM) all registered as members within a day of each other (Cherrypie & Casper join within an hour), and they only make these posts to complain and support each others' so-called complaints.

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

well Jingle... i guess mayb u are not fit to own a pet.... or even call urself a pet lover. if you are to throw a tantrum like a little kid every time someone does not smile at you or something, what would happen if your pet shits and pees all over your house?? i pity your pet...

another thing, u say that you are into sales line or something.... and u smile even if u meet the worst kind of customers.... that understood... because u do that for a living... if you don't smile, u get no sales... and no sales means less commission... aint that true??? you would even smile to your customer if any of your family members go sell salted egg... :p

But please bear in mind that we are humans.... and humans makes mistakes... and whatmore those people that are at paws are most of them volunteers. and if by chance anyone there has a bad day and by chance you talk to him/her in an impolite way... i'll be sure that he/she will be ticked off...

like they all say, if u think its easy work... y not go and volunteer yourself to work at paws? then u'll know how difficult it is to be working there.... no wonder there are so many cases of dogs being returned to paws or spca.. all because of people like you... to like dogs or to have them as pets is not as simple as it seems.... to care for a dog requires 110% of love, and patience. not to mention all the adjustments that you need to do in your house before you get one home.... you must make sure that the dustbin cannot be opened by the dog or place them in a high place, make sure that there is no soap or clorox or anything that is within their reach, your house gate is secured and the dog cant get out..... etc etc etc etc....

before you even think of getting a dog, there is alot of things to be taken into account.. for a person like u Jingle, i dont think independent animal rescuers like us would even let you have a mongrel even if you are filthy rich...

A dog is a man's most loyal friend.

Re: [Jingle] bad impression in PAWS

I too had a very bad experience with paws. Before i said futher, i wan to clarify this is my personal xperince and u all may not agree with me. anyway, it's over now. i forgave and forget those scums!

It happened few years back where my family saved a female adult stray-dog. my mom was so pity of her when she saw her biting her pup searching for places to shelter rain at that time. So we took her in, eventually she became very friedly and my family oso glad that we did the right thing. We fed her and her pups and naming her 'gal' and her pup 'moon'

We know we cant keep both of them as we already have 2 male adult dog and our house is way too small for 4dogs. I was so attached to moon and decided to move moon and gal to my new home once its ready. i need time, roughly 6-8mth for my house to be complete the renovation and everything.

So we decided to board both of them temporary in paws thinking that it just for a temporary period. we paid paws and there they went in separate confiement. i felt sad but what can i do? i'm soo lucky my gfren(that time) is very understanding and supportive. she too have 4 dogs at her home. Every weekend both of us, sometime with my mom, we will be there with foods, supplies donate to paws. spent at least 1-2hrs just playing with both of them.

Things started to turn bad, i was busy with my new house and only have weekend to handle it, so for few weeks we were unable go to paws. Later another week, when i was there i noticed moon's leg wounded with hole as big as 10sen. Paws worker told me it was due to dog-fights for foods. Moon was howling n wagging like crazy when she saw me. Gal oso same, she too lost weight. Patient! i told myself. Few more mth to go!!

Then it was all over, the following week i went, moon passed away. According to them, she was put-down due to sickness. The fat bastard who's always sitting inside the ofc said 'itu anjing suda gila'. I insist to see her body, then only they show me, it's in a huge long-fridge, .... i can still remember that moment. After another few weeks, gal oso gone. i presume she's dead. I felt so guilty, sent in 2 come out 0!!

It did come across my mind to burn down that old place. i know some people who can do it for me but the real victims will be those dogs too. it sounds dramatic rite? but it's true, all my family members and frens advise me not to do anything stoopid, they said 'to revenge 2 lost souls by killing more?' lastly i changed my mind. learn to forgive. learn to forget. and bliv in karma.

Re: [Jasonyapkk] bad impression in PAWS

Jason, I understand how you feel. Revengeful. But I'm glad that you forgive and hopefully u will forget soon.

I too feel sad when I read your story. I have a few rescued dogs with me which I some how decided to keep them with me when I move to new house if they are not adopted. They are caged most of the time because it is not convenient to let loose 4 of them in the garden as my neighbour might comoplain. I'm so upset and I always talk to them that ' be patient, you all will go to a new house where u can roam freely soon'.

Jason u can still start off your new house by adopting dogs. Yeah you hate PAWS but not the doggies. They are still worth a 2nd chance in life. And only u and me can give them.

Hello,

I went to PAWS just last week and was browsing around for prospective puppies to adopt. I've found one really cute puppy for was placed in a NO ENTRY zone. Why is that? I really wanted to go say hi to that lovely puppy, and probably adopt it.

Sigh.

Re: [dewgem] quetions

The ' no entry ' zone are for pups that are not ready.. some are not well, not neut or just surrendered. The healthy pups that are ready, neut, vac are usually in the pen. Please go check those out.

Re: [mbless] quetions

If referring to the pups in PAWS. I'm very interested to see the pups which is located in the NO ENTRY zone near the front gate. their cage is at the corner. I remember there is a cream coloured pup with 2 dark brown or black pups. Small pups.

Re: [yeee] bad impression in PAWS

Based on my experience at PAWS, I also won't adopt a dog from them. No doubt the ppl there are kind and all but as for me..no way will I adopt a dog from them. I was there before and I regret going there looking for a dog to adopt. In the end, we bought a new dog.

Re: [Liz Tay] bad impression in PAWS

hello there... i'm just curious... i've read thru the PAWs site regarding the volunteering thinggie.... it says there that volunteers are wellcome at any time during OPENING TIMES:
Monday - Friday: 9.00am - 4.00pm
Except Wednesday: CLOSED for maintenance/training/etc.
Saturday - Sunday: 9.00am - 4.00pm

well.. if that is the case.... when are working people like me able to go there to help out??? is there actually a time table or something for volunteers to go n help out?

Re: [redhand] bad impression in PAWS

Dear redhand,

i dunno wat u had experience in PAWS but as my personal opinions i think the pups at there are cutes. maybe they are not as cute as the pure breed pups but im sure the mongrels are more clever & obedience than the pure breed. maybe this is their nature. Hope you wouldnt give up to help the hopeless as the others might help you back in the future. Frown

Re: [luv_leehom517] bad impression in PAWS

Actually if a pedigree is brought up like a mongrel, allowing to roam the streets, they will be the same... no difference coz they are still dogs. Pure breeds are pampered by their owners... so they lost some of their instinct. They would not know how to find food coz they are fed regularly so no need to hunt for food. They are sheltered, loved, slept on soft beddings... so no need to rough it out on the streets. And so if they are thrown out later, they would not know what to do. My mongrel would not know how to look for food should I throw her out. She is well taken care and lives indoor and would be as dumb as a pure breed if on the road on her own.

Here's a few things you can do to train your dog.

1. Get someone to hold the leash of the dog while you open the gate. If the dog tries to lunge for the exit, say "No" firmly and look the dog in the eyes. Once the dog calms down and stops trying to escape. Command him to sit and give it a treat. In due time, the dog will associate that not rushing outside will be in relation to a treat given.

2. Do not practice "negative reinforcement" - as in whacking the dog. It's a simple animal, devoid of higher levels of thinking as what we have (...well most of us...) Beating the dog will only result in fear and later... onset aggression towards you or other people.

3. Most of all, you have to be patient. It's a slow process but the effect is rewarding.

u forgot one thing... the easiest way is just to make sure that your house is escape proof and always make sure they are not around... hehehe

Re: [egretaus] bad impression in PAWS

paws seariously got a lot of problem..the worker atitude is rude!~beside that, the dog is too expensive to adopt..i went the once time hope to adopt a dog with a cheap price but they given me rm400 for the dog.the dog usually is old!i rather to buy a baby puppy!why noy the paws make the price lower a bit..the reason who go adopt the dog is because not that much to buy a dog from the pet shop only to visit there..but i think that is the last i went.

Re: [nickko] bad impression in PAWS

RM400 is expensive? Pet shop selling way more expensive la. How old is old? And FYI beagle is not suitable for older people. You want a cheap puppy then adopt a mongrel puppy. They are dogs too and definitely easier to take care.

Re: [nickko] bad impression in PAWS

didnt know whether have u bought or kept pedigree before..RM400 is consider very cheap unless the dog is going to die or have terminal illness or any defects.... yes u can buy a certain pedigree puppy with RM400 but does ur granny have the time to raise up a small puppy...and 400 puppy usually come from puppy mills that doesnt give any care about health/genetics defects.. i once saw a female dog that been used to breed had mange/skin disease all over the body and the owner doesnt really care as long as she can deliver till she die...

RM400 for PAW are to be used to keep the place alive and to help out dog and seriously do adopt mongrel if u prefer a cheaper doggie... beside that i am sure PAW do have their vet check on the dog health before putting out for adoption.

i got my husky when she is 7 weeks old and till now i have spent over rm200+ on medication alone and she yet to complete her jabs... so in the end it will cost more than rm400 just for vacine and treatment alone during the puppy stage.

and i think getting an adult dog is more suitable for ur granny....and also have to see how strong ur granny are...

my granny 7x something and still like to play with my husky...

good luck in finding a dog....
