My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

I'm not writing this thread to spark any racism issue. I have nothing against the Malays but what happened to me and BB yesterday evening angers me more than anything.

I took BB out for his evening walk around Taman Ibu Kota (Setapak Garden) housing area. I went there a few times but normally on weekends in the morning with my boyfriend.

I stay in a condominium, so i don't have the privilege to play with BB in an open area by my condo, that's one reason why i drive out to Taman Ibu Kota to walk my BB around the neighbourhood.

I was walking BB quietly, making sure he doesn't pick up anything to eat, watching his every movement, just like our usual walking session. We were walking away from the Malay kids, the playground, Malays houses, Malays cars, etc.

WE KEPT OUR DISTANCE FROM THE MALAYS TO RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY.

But to my horror, their Malays kids start to ride their bikes towards us, shouting "ANJING, ANJING", making whistling noise, showing faces, giving me the "F$%^" look.

I was shocked, Bobby was naive thinking the Malays kids wanted to play with him, try to run up to them. I had to use my full energy to refrain BB from running towards them.

I had to shout to the Malays kids to stopped shouting loudly, they didn't listen to me at all. They continue to shout "ANJING, ANJING, LARI, TAKUT, ANJING NAK GIGIT!!!"

Bobby was turning frantic. He got too excited with all the shouting. I tried to walked away from the Malays kids, but they kept on following us with their bikes. Some even walked up to me on their foot and then run away tempting BB to follow them in the run.

BB misunderstood the whole scenario, cos i normally jogs with him during his walk. When he sees the Malays kids run, he thought he's suppose to follow their "jogging" as well.

BB never behave like that when i take him out for his walk. It upsets me so much that I had to carry him back to my car and drove back to my condominium.

I was not angry at BB for behaving like that. I know he's a friendly pup, only 4 months English Cocker Spaniel. I couldn't believe my ears when i heard the Malays mums SHOUTED "JANGAN KACAU ANJING DIA, NANTI ANJING DIA GIGIT AWAK!".

They should educate their kids not to provoke any dogs, not based on "anjing dia gigit awak", but should educate their kids not to run after dogs, teasing them, making noises, shouting loudly. Dogs do not attack human unless they feel threatened.

I questions myself after what happened yesterday. I wonder whether it was my fault for taking BB out to Taman Ibu Kota for his walk.

I'm aware that there are Chinese and Indians staying in that neighbourhood with dogs. I met up some of the dog owner during their weekends morning walks. I had never encounter anything like yesterday.

Maybe it was my fault for assuming that the area is safe to bring my BB out for walks. I never knew the Malays there are psycho to run after dogs and shouting madly.

I'm writing this to share my experience. I do hope to bring BB to a safe place for his walk. No more "attacks" by the Malays.

Re: [madmoz] we should never let the actions of a few tarnish our perception of others

Madmoz,

I agree with your statement. As I've said earlier in my thread that I have nothing against Malays.

FYI, my bro in law is a Malay, my elder sister has converted to Muslim. I have a niece, 2 stepbrothers and 2 best friends who are Malays (Muslim).

If my thread made you think that I'm generalizing the whole Malay population, well, I'm sorry.

I've started this thread because I want to let out my feelings. I was scared yesterday, I had no one to defend me n BB. It was unfair for BB and I to be treated in such way by the Malay kids.

We respected their privacy, kept our distance from them. It was they who came forward to disturb us.

I do not know what perception I should perceive from the action of those Malay kids. From what I can see and feel is Malay need to be educated that ANJING is not a dangerous animal.

And if they continue to do what they did to me and BB yesterday, some day one of them are bound to be attack by a dog. And when this happen, who gets the blame? The dog owner and the dog, of course.

Think about it. Not trying to start any racism here. Just something for everyone to think of when they are being blamed for things that happen out of their control.

Re: [zoeilam] we should never let the actions of a few tarnish our perception of others

I think the Malay need more islamic education on DOGS! As my Malay teacher told me, they can touch dog, just don't touch the dog's nose and saliva. If they hit dog just for fun or anything, it's sinful! I have some Malay friends who own dogs and they love dogs...even my Arabian friends also love my dogs. Errm...I think local Malay should refer back to their Al'Quaran or something...Nabi stated that dont touch dog nose and saliva, because that time there was mad dog disease. So, maybe the act smart people misinterpret the real meaning. Unimpressed

Re: [phekling19] the Malay need more islamic education on DOGS

Phek Ling,

I've read the "Dog in Islam" article published in puppy.com. But sad to say, the local Islam have a different point of view about dog in Islam.

The Islam in our country belongs to the Mazhab Shafie which has a different understanding about dog. Mazhab Shiite accept the dog as fellow companion, but Mazhab Shafie does not condone dog as pet.

When I ask my Malay frens about dog in Islam, some give positive answers, but majority think ANJING ADALAH HARAM. I too have Malays frens who own dogs in their home.

What I can see now in Malaysia is dogs are haram everywhere. Regardless how you want to prove to them that our dogs are well behaved, in the end is still back to square one.

When i went to Genting Permai to stay 3D/2N, I had no problems with the Malays there. I was free to bring my BB for his morning and afternoon walks around the resort. The staff there respected me and BB because they know BB is harmless and they saw me picking up BB's poo to keep their cleanliness.

But when I'm back in the city, KL, everything is different. No matter how i try to convince other people that BB is harmless, well behaved, we are clean (I clear BB's poo at all time), etc... CERTAIN PEOPLE still see BB as dirty/haram, etc....

I am saving money now with my bf to buy a landed property within dog friendly neighbourhood. It's not easy task, but we are being careful in selecting the next home for BB and our future furkids (I plan to adopt more dogs).

This thread is just a way for me to let out my frustration. Some people might think I over react to what happened to me n BB yesterday. But honestly speaking, I have never seen such mob in my life.

Re: [zoeilam] we should never let the actions of a few tarnish our perception of others

Wink Hahahah! My sister-in-law is a Malay too! My uncle converted and 'kena sunat'! It was so funny cause he had to wear a sarong for a whole week!

Don't worry, I didn't find your post offensive or anything, but I wanted to remind some of the members here that we live in a country where balance is everything (... rambles about being patritic blah blah blah), hence the need to be more reserved when making comments. Laugh I love malay food, especially nasi lemak - so to all of you out there - BEHAVE! I don't want to be stuck in a situation where the only food available is chinese...

Unsure When I was younger, one of my Muslim friends told me why dogs are 'haram'. As in the bible, there too was a noah's ark in the Quran. Only difference was that there wasn't a pair of pigs and dogs. When the flood finally subsided, I believe it was the elephant that gave birth to a pair of pigs and a pair of dogs (or was it one each)?. The newlyborns promptly ate up the mess left behind by the flood (the dead carcasses, the mud etc) and were hence deemed 'unclean'.

Is this the real reason why dogs are 'haram'? Haven't got round to asking my uncle, so maybe we can ask our Muslim friends?

Re: [madmoz] the need to be more reserved when making comments

Madmoz,

Well, at least it's cleared that I am not trying to spark any racism here.

I heard about the Noah's Ark story also, minus the part where elephant gave birth to the pigs and dogs, and the mess they ate after that

Currently there is two version of why dogs are consider "unclean"

1. During Nabi Muhammad time, there were mad dog disease - dogs are deemed "unclean" - refer to article "Dog in Islam" published in puppy.com

2. Noah's Ark - pigs and dogs did not enter the ark along with the other animals, once left out, consider "unclean"

It's a good idea - I'll go home and ask my bro in law why dogs are consider "unclean". Hopefully he can explain better from an Islamic view.

P/S: I love nasi lemak also Laugh , rendang ayam, ikan keli masak sambal cili padi

Re: [zoeilam] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

Hello

I had the similar problem too. I stay in Taman Ibu Kota and when I bring my dogs for walks, I get the similar stuff. The kids are bold, they even came up to my gate and threw rocks into my house. Why? They wanted to tease my dogs. Once, a group of young Malay kids came up to my gate and fences with sticks and poked my dogs. NOt only that, they threw so many rubbish into my house.

Sometimes these kids are accompanied by their parents and I was so shock to see the parent laughing when their kids tease my dogs. Many times I have raised my voice and so has my dad. All fall on deaf ears. Luckily, none of my dogs were hurt from the stones and luckily nothing was broken. The stones that they threw almost hit the car many times.

Re: [crazymouse_yyh] I had the similar problem too

YYH,

Seriously? I thought it was one off incident. I had no idea this happened to dog owners who stay in Tmn Ibu Kota.

Which part is your housing area? Is it near to the playground? I don't plan to bring BB there for evening walk anymore. It's too dangerous la. Don't want BB to get hurt.

So nowadays where do you take your dogs for their walks? You are still staying in that housing area?

I won't consider buying any landed house at Tmn Ibu Kota. It's not dog friendly at all.

The other day I saw two young kids walking their dogs (Min Pin & unidentified breed). I hope those kids are safe walking their dogs.

Now BB just stay home and play with me in the condo. Sometimes if the weather permits, and no crowd at my condo parking, I'll bring BB down for a walk around my condo (but have to be careful lor).

Still saving money to buy a landed house within dog friendly neighbourhood Unsure

Re: [zoeilam] I had the similar problem too

I've been staying in Taman Ibu Kota for the past 17 year liao...I rarely walk my dogs now. The best time to walk your dog is late in the evening, when all the kids are at home having their dinner. Like 7pm onwards. The kids with the pincher and the mixbreed are ok, I see them walk around the housing area. I learn that if you walk in housing areas, better, less disturbance... walk near the park and it's crazy.

These days, many dog owners are taking their dogs out after 7pm. Or early in the mornings are the best times. When I walk my dogs, the kids stay away from me but tease my dog from a far... shout loudly and stuff. My dogs are boxers and a lab so the size scares them a bit.

Taman Ibu Kota used to be dog friendly, until kids with no manners and no respect for others started to run about. Not safe anymore...

YYH,

Well, I guess I'll bring BB out for his morning walks on weekends only, since I can't make it after 7pm.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I had no idea such kids exists in Tmn Ibu Kota.

Maybe one of these days during BB's walk, I hope to bump into you. It's always nice to have other dog owners to chat with during walks. It's also good for our furkids to socialize.

Will keep my eyes open for boxers and a lab during my walks in future

My boxers rarely get to socialise coz people think my dogs are attack dogs but hey are infact big clowns and get excited easily. My lab is ok with other dogs, slightly shy.. yah, it'll be nice to have a good chat with you.

Yah, weekends is better. I too walk my dogs during weekends... I stay around Tmn Ibu Kota 5, a bit near to the park .... but i try to stay away from it and walk else where....

Alright, will find my way to TIK 5 during the weekends.

If you don't mind, we can arrange a time for our furkids to meet up as well.

My BB is 4 months plus, very playful, get excited easily too. I hope to adopt another dog but have to wait til I move to a landed house first.

Your house must be very "alive" with all the dogs you have. That's fun, ya.

Re: [leecy] bring my dog out for a walk during night time..

Leecy,

Guess the media plays a part in making dogs such a "dangerous" species nowadays.

Every article that we read in newspaper tend to highlight the fact that a kid died/hurt cos of attack by stray dogs or big dogs owned by some masters.

Not one article highlight the fact that the kids were attacked because they made the mistake of provoking the dogs.

No articles to highlight the fact that dogs assisted the police, the fire brigade, army, medical practitioner, etc to fight enemies, to hunt criminals, to sniff out drugs, to save human lives, and on and on.....

People tend to believe what they read in newspaper most of the time. If only one writer writes one good story about dogs, and 9 others wrote bad stories about dogs, which one do you think gets to the public? Obviously the 9 bad articles abt dogs...

National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel shows good shows about dogs but how many subscribes to these channels? Or how many actually watch these shows?

For the dog haters, nothing can convince them that dogs are clean, well behaved, good companion, etc.

It never come across my mind that some day dogs might extinct in Malaysia, starting with big dogs.....

Re: [zoeilam] it'll be nice to have a good chat with you

Sure, no problem. I won't be in this weekend, maybe next weekend then. Ok? For weekends, the best time is during the mornings coz the sun isn't too hot and hahaha....the kids are watching cartoons. Perfect!

Hope you find the perfect landed house soon. I think my house already too alive hahahah....

I think school kids these days should go for classes where they learn to respect people and animals... Reading the news, it's always a kid getting bitten and always they say the dog attacked all of the sudden. Well, I dunno true or not but from what I have seen near my place, kids tease the dogs first. Once, there was a pack of stray dogs, I was walking my dog and they all followed me... was afriad they might attack so I stood my ground and walked backwards slowly to show them I'm not a threat. Then, all of a sudden this little malay kid came out from my neighbour's house and took a stick and fling at the dogs.... Wow, luckily I was there or I think it would have been another dog attack case. The stray dogs were already growling. I quickly scolded to kid and told him to go back into the house while I slowly walked backwards and avoiding eye contact with the dogs. Luckily, the dogs went of after that...

Re: [crazymouse_yyh] the best time is during the mornings

YYH,

Alright, will look out for you next weekend then.

Remember the Rott attacked kid story some time ago? It was the kid who provoked the Rott to attack. I got this fact frm someone working with govt.

But of course the media only highlighted tat the Rott misbehaved and suddenly attack the kid. Tat's the kind of story public want to read. Nobody wants to read "kid provoked Rott til attack happens" story.

Not all people understand the psychology of a dog. An experienced vet told me that NEVER ever look into the eyes of a dog, especially a stray dog cos it'll read the look as a threat. IF you are scared, just quietly back off, don't turn your back againts the dog, just move away, but NEVER ever look into its eyes.

Throwing sticks and stones should never be the 1st defense. IF the dog do attack you, do not run off like a mad person, it'll provoke the dog to chase after you even more. IF you are bitten and the dogs refused to let go of you, strangle the throat, just long enough for the dog to let go, NEVER until the dog chokes to death

Things like this should be taught to kids who fear dogs. But no one bother to write a good article on this topic because it does not attracts public to pick up the newspaper and read on. It's always better to sell topics like "Another dog attack", money talks as usual.

I'm glad you were safe with the stray dogs encounter. It's always sad to know that there are people who wrongfully breed their dogs, and then abandoned them on the streets.

Ever wonder why they are so many stray dogs on the streets, but only those nice ones are being bought/adopted to new home?

Re: [zoeilam] the best time is during the mornings

Yes, I read about that. Sigh... kids these days never learn. They think teasing a dog is fun. Once a gang of kids didn't leave my dogs alone and kept poking my dogs with sticks, evern after I warned them not too. I got so angry, I took my friendliest dog and chased them a bit to teach them a lesson. No one was hurt, but I didn't see them near my home again hahahaah....

The media shoud do their part, work with SPCA and do weekly articles on how to respect animals. I think having some sort of education thing in school would be the best, it'll be compulsary for al the students.

Stray dogs, all by irresponsible owners. People buy and adopt pure breeds coz some like the breed, of find them ok for their allergies or for a predictable dog. Some ah.... sigh... they don't spay their dogs and let them roam about, then later the dog gets pregnant and then the pups are thrown out as strays.. I've seen a few cases like this near Setapak Garden... people there love to let their dogs run freely, no matter how many times I tell them to not do it, they say the dog is happy.

The stray dogs I encountered, were not from TIK, they were dogs from setapak garden. I recognize many strays there... all were males and they were aggressive ones too, bit one dog till wounded. I heard from a resident staying there that DBKL came one day and caught many strays... poor souls...

Re: [crazymouse_yyh] Sigh... kids these days never learn

YYH,

It's like tat, kids only learn when mistakes happened. If their parents didn't bother to educate or monitor their kids, there is nothing much we can do also.

Sometimes I do wonder why no writers write good story about dogs. Could it be, there are writers who write good story but it was edited out at the end of the day?

I heard about the stray dogs, but I seldom see the gang around Teratai Mewah. I stay there.

I only see the gang of stray dogs at Prima Setapak, near the food courts area. It was kinda of scary seeing the gang roaming around, no idea they are safe or not. But I do wonder why there is such a pack of stray dogs.

Yeah, I can understand about the purebreed thingy. My English Cocker Spaniel is a purebreed, but I didn't buy BB from a pet shop. My brother adopted it for me from someone.

BB is on long term fungal treatment for his infected paw nails. He had it before I adopted him. The vet who attended to BB was very upset about BB's condition cos such a young puppy (then one month) shouldn't get this kind of sickness.

To date, I've spent quite a hefty sum on BB's medical condition. BB tend to get sick easily. Being 1st time dog owner, I would say I've been going in and out of Animal Medical Centre so often that the reception, kennel hands and the MDs there can recognise BB. Blush

Oh dear! Think I've run off from the initial topic of this thread.

Re: [zoeilam] Sigh... kids these days never learn

Yah... a pity they do not learn.

I just came in from my compound. I was watching TV when I notice a lot of kids making noise. Curious, I looked out the window and to my SHOCK!!!! A gang of Malay boys, between the ages of 7 to 13 were outside my house, bullying my lab. My dog is inside my compound, just sitting and staring. Those boys threw rotten fruits and hard berries they picked from my neighbour's bushes. Even my neighbour's dog was also bullied. So angry, I went outside and shouted at them and they just laughed and cycled off. Eeeeeee.... I wish I know where they lived, then I can tell their parents a thing or two about their kids.

Sigh... poor stray dogs... the females get raped and breed everytime they go on heat, pity them. Yah, I have seen a few dogs around Teratai Mewah...

Oh, you adopted your dog? Fungal problem? Poor thing, was your pup mistreated last time?

Read your thread, are you willing to really blow the whole situation up if you are I suggest you write to The Star newspaper telling your story of what has happen and ask for advise, a similiar thing to M.K.A. and asking for advise plus S.P.C.A. if you really wish to cause a stir write one to the local council, in Bahasa Malaysia asking for advise plus one to the State Vets Department. Give them a month to response and they do not you write again to the papers and ask who you can get advise on how to cope. A lot of paper work but it is worth it since these are the parties who talks alot and see if they do alot. However, do note it the park/ground you went to have a sign that says no dogs, you better not say anything at all as you have broken a by-law.

The issue here is not what the boys did or did not do but how to solve the issue with these establishments who are suppose to help.

What kind of satisfaction do they get by "teasing" our furkids?

I've written to The Star this morning. I do not know whether the editor will publish my email or not. But I'm hoping he/she will approve my article.

Ya, I've adopted BB from his previous owner. I do not think he was mistreated but the fungal infection was with him before I've adopted him.

By the time BB came home to me, the fungal infection was turning to worse. So now he's on long term treatment. His paw nails will never be like those normal nails. His paw nails are enlarged and disfigured. But I still love him the same.

Re: [PSY] are you willing to really blow the whole situation up

PSY,

I've written an email to The Star this morning. I have no idea when or whether they will publish my article.

I'm not keen to write to SPCA/MKA/Local Council/State Vet Dept. I roughly know what will be their replies. I have dealt with govt. bodies and those in authorities before.

BB and I stayed away from playground/parks. We always go for our walk by the road side of housing area. We did not break any laws on the day we were "teased" by those kids. It was them who came harassing BB and I.

Anyway, I've learnt from my mistakes. I won't bring BB to TIK during evening when the kids are playing around then. I will keep my schedule to walk BB in the morning during weekends. Weekdays, I'll play with BB in my house then.

Thanks for your advice to write to newspaper. I've thought about it. But somehow I think my article will be editted out due to "unforeseen" reason.

Re: [PSY] if it is not a complain then you are half way there

PSY,

I understand what you mean by play with words. But all articles sent to Letter to Editor column are edited by The Star to suit certain publishing requirement.

Since my issue is sensitive to some race, it might not make it to the printing. The media is here to keep the harmonious ties among races. No way, they'll jeopardised their business for some minor complaints.

I did not write the email as a complaint, but more of a question to the public on why certain kids are all out to wrongfully provoke a furkid to attack.

Maybe my thread in here seems to point out Malay kids are the culprit here, but fact is fact. They are the ONE who go around provoking furkids.

You seem to be a very diplomatic person. Have you written to The Star before? If you have and your article is published, I salute you for that. I think you'll be a suitable candidate to write more articles to The Star to create awareness in our society.

I'm not a diplomatic person at all. I'm always blunt with my words. It gets to some people.....most people I would say. Blush

Hi Zoeilam, this my humble opinion.

This rule was not given for the some people alone, but for all people of all races and nations. It is the perfect end toward which all the law and the teaching of God. It requires that each one put himself in the place of the other. We do not want others to be prejudiced against us; we want them to understand us. Hence we are not to be prejudiced against others, but try to understand them. No matter in what position we may find ourselves, we want to be treated with consideration, fairness, kindness, even sympathy, and sometimes with compassion and mercy. We are, therefore, to treat others in the same manner. This is a very simple principal and easy to understand. If we would follow it, no matter what others may do, it would go far in removing all prejudice and misunderstanding of others, and would also go far in removing the prejudice of others toward us. May God grant us the intelligence and faith to understand and accept His wisdom and to practice it in our attitude towards others. God Bless.

Re: [Ich_liebe_Puppy] if it is not a complain then you are half way there

Well, I'm here to voice out the same problem on my side:

My friend walked his dog past a Malay corner house. He had done nothing wrong to the Malay family, just walking the dog past, leaving nothing on their path.

Some day later, when he ride past the house with his bicycle, the Malay woman at the backyard SPLASHED WATER ON HIM!!! He got wet and went home. ! Ironically, their neighbour was rearing a Jack Russell Terrier at that time.

Re: [zoeilam] Oh, you adopted your dog?

My 3 dogs were bought... but I have adopted a mix breed and he lives in my aunt's place which is close to my house.

Yes, why must they do it? I also don't understand. A friend of mine rescued a puppy once... it was bullied by Malay boys. They cornered the pup and threw stones at it.

Good for you that you have written to the Star. I haven't tried writing to them... I mostly go around advicing kids not to do such things. Some do listen... but not all.

Good for you that you adopted him. You have done a good job! All dogs should be loved and cared.... they love us so much.

Ich_Liebe

I noticed some members have gone through what I've gone through. And I also noticed some members misunderstood the reason I've created this thread.

Thanks for the quote. It has meaning, and I do understand the message you want to convey to me and others.

Again, let me make it clear that this thread is not to START any racism. If that evening I was "teased" by Chinese or Indians, I would still write in this forum of the same issue.

I am not complaining of what happened to me the other day. I am merely trying to let out my frustration, sharing my experience, and of course questioning the sanity of mothers for allowing their kids to provoke a furkid.

I would like to put this thread to rest, if I may because I'm really tired of explaining the purpose of this thread being created.

When I've decided to write to The Star, it was not because I was angry. I wrote the email to The Editor, because I want public to hear another side of dog attack story.

But I would like to thank you for your time spent to reading this thread.

Bluetoise,

Thanks for sharing your story with me. Appreciate it a lot. At least I know I'm not alone in this.

But anyway, I would like to put this thread to rest now. I do not want some members to think I am still writing this thread out of anger or discrimination.

However, you may continue to chat with in another forum I might create later.

YYH,

Nice dogs you have. Saw your "My Dogs" photo album.

I plan to adopt dogs when I have a landed property but I might still consider to buy certain dog breed like Whippet.

Think by now you should have read what I've written to other members in this thread. I think is time to put this thread to a rest.

I'll see you around in other thread, and of course TIK 5 morning walk.

Thanks for sharing your experience and story with me. Appreciate to know I'm not insane to start this thread.

Hope to meet you furkids one of these days at TIK 5.

C ya.

Re: [zoeilam] "Whatsoever you would that men should do unto you, even so do you also unto them: for this is the law and the prophets".

Zoeilam

Yes, the issue is not race. It is the attitude they have towards our furkids. We as lovers of furkids must have high tolerance when we meet these group of people. What can we say? Wish they have a more open perspective on this.

Sometimes for the sake and boundless love of our furkids, we just had to be patient. I also had an experience when I walked my furkid, suddenly the long garden hose was pointing to my furkid and the lady shouted at me and my furkid. I was furious and could have picked an argument, but for the sake of my furkid I walked away. And that was the first time we decided to walk that street!. She accused my furkid of pooing there! Never ! It might be others' furkids?

It is good to express our frustrations !but we still hold our hopes that certain group will change their mindset on our furry frens.

Re: [zoeilam] Sigh... kids these days never learn

In Reply To

I stay at Prima Setapak b4 oso, & used to feed the strays there, well so far for those i met are frenly..

yah agree with u, fact that most of the kids who disturb our dogs are Malays, it seems like instinct or wat??

juz few days ago some malay kids saw my dog & dono y they are so excited & keep shouting dog! dog! 1 of them act like super hero walking forward & forward towards my dog, i rush out & stare at him then he reverse back step by step. these kids have to be fierce to them, no other cures!

Re: [zoeilam] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

Ignorance is not confined to race or age. I've seen adults teasing wild monkeys by the side of the road, throwing stones at iguanas, kids using sticks to provoke anteaters trapped in a drain, etc. Of course this doesn't mean that all people are like this.

It takes a bit of education and awareness to understand that all people and animals should be treated with some respect. All the above teasers and taunters are probably rarely exposed to animals other than their own pets if any. Similarly, kids brought up with little awareness and experience with dogs other than what is read in newspapers or told by parents who are equally unexposed to such pets, will not understand such pets.

Its not whether you're a malay or not, its not whether dog and pet programs are available on astro or national geographic or discovery.... Its whether you are interested or respectful of others in the first place. Dog owners too have different levels of respectfulness for their own dogs and others. It is safe to say that dog owners have respect enough to not deliberately bring their dogs to invade the privacy of people they know are not fond of dogs, and many even keep their dogs away from people other than those who indicate interest or come voluntarily.

Groups of taunting kids are not confined to Malaysia alone. I've encountered and heard of these incidents in very non-muslim countries too. Its the combination of ignorance, immature peer activity, and dare. Adult versions can be found with groups of guys whistling and shouting teases to passing girls, or anyone very different from the group.

Oops, turned out to be a bit longer than I intended..... anyway, I too am always looking for safe and friendly places for Donno to visit.

Hi fiona.... my experience was slightly different. My malay neighbour love my dogs very much n they will keep bringing kittens to me to find homes for them. They know my dogs wont hurt the cats. Every time she go for holiday she will peek over n tell my dog : Auntie go holiday, u help jaga my rumah yah. But I cannot say the same for the relatives children that come to her hse. They will throw stone (n one hit my lab above the eye n the skin tear) , cans and egg shells into my house. But after i explain to the Malay neighbour she scold them n it doesnt happen again. As for my chinese neighbour, she complain to my owner ( i was renting at that time) that I had so many dogs n DBKL came (i had 3 labs n one terrier at that time all waiting to b rehome) but after explaining the ppl in DBKL quite nice coz I was nice too.....(ahem) I cooperate n explain nicely lah... of course also bluff a bit... hehe.
Actually it all depend on ppl not so much on race. Wish more education bout animals done in school lah.

I undertand this point. Not all Malays. But my close friends told me this. She saw the Malay boys use a stick at a dog. And came running to her saying the dog bites. She only saw the dog laying there doing nothing.I had a hard time with the Paskitan(Muslim)... He quarrel with me saying my dog jump at him on the gate and scare him.And my dog biten his brother.I had never let my dog loose only did escape befopre but as I call they will come back so next day I found out, it was the next few doors' dog who biten his brother. They just love to accuse anyone.I also have 2 nice Malay neighbor who never bother my dogs.I did see Malay kids scare my dogs and disturb them before so they bark but we will get the blame that our dogs are noisy. My 2 nieghbors sucks. The on on the right quarrel with me before. And now build the wall and not to see us while the other side they build the wall beautifully and lower.Ours just one whole ugly wall up to the height of human. The left one had complain us to cop and I bet MPSJ if I am not wrong. They are Indian. So I do agree not just Malays.Worst, my house got borke in but nobody care.My dogs bark and they just treat them as nuisance only.I was so angry that I curse that those who did not care and did not help will get it soon.Sigh.So you see having dogs really make me headache :( Love dogs and people are mean to you. Hi Vicfion.....

Sometimes we also must understand if our neighbour is Malay.. Im agreed that kids are having a atitude problem..... This kind of thing we cant avoid it if we are a dog lovers....

For me, my dad have build the quite high wall between my Malay neighbour. This all we just need to avoid any misunderstanding or any inconvenience caused.

If we think in a good way, is it will be much more better ?

Re: [zoeilam] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

ZOEILAM, let me tell you what happened to me.

I stay in Sri Kembangan in a d/storey house so that shouldn't be a problem with me having my Dachshund,Sausage. One day, while i was cleaning my house, I let Sausage into the garden to play.

The family that lives across frm me is a malay family.her 2 kids cm to my gate and started to make barking noises.Sausage doesn't bark back.only if you touch the gate or enter the compound.anyways.. those kids started throwing bread and stones into the house.the boy touched our gate and sausage became MAD! He started barking like crazy.they ran back into the house and called their parents.

They cm out and gave me this ed up look like they wanted to have a fight.what you said was right. parents should teach their kids that if you intimidate the dog,of course lar he would bark back!

gosh! these malays are so ignorant. you know, we should have our own DOG COMMUNITY HOUSING AREA where dog lovers can live in peace without hacing to worry!

Re: [zoeilam] bring my dog out for a walk during night time..

Totally agree with you. I was just saying to my fren the other day that the perception that the newspaper articles about dog attacks gives people is that the dogs attacked the kids for no reason. Either no one bothered to check whether the dog was provoked first or not or it was just omitted to create sensationalism, more drama equals higher circulation.

Anyway, kids are kids. They're playful and most of the time do not know better. So parents should educate their children on how to approach and treat not only dogs but all animals. When my neighbour's daughter first saw my puppy, she liked it very much and even kept pestering her mum for the same kind of dog and yet when she saw my puppy outside, she threw stones at it. She thought it was a way of playing with it.

Parents! You are responsible for how your kids act! Teach them the right thing and you can prevent harm from befalling them.

Re: [zoeilam] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

I could sense your frustration here.

I once let my dog run at the beach. Suddenly, there were children and adults around. To my surprise my dog took off like a rocket heading towards the enemy. However, my pup wanted to play as he loves kids (most kids around my neighborhood often give him treat) but not to attack anyone! He never did anyway. He did sniff a bit and circulate around waggling his tail around them but suddenly, one of the adults (a non- Muslim guy) turned to me and viciously said- "you all dog owners are all the same!" Not interested to dignify his statement with any replies, I apologized and took my dogs away from him and the rest. It seems to me at that point, he looked like he was on the verge of 'hentam' my face.

I felt guilty but it is beyond my comprehension why people could be so harsh to that extend. My neighbour is a Malay family and they love my dog. The wife loves to bake and the kids often 'speak' to my dog. The wife sometimes make plain cookies for my dog. I come back late once a while and they will re-fill the bowl with water outside. I feel extremely lucky for that. However, it thought me a great lesson- never unleash my dog again especially if someone or strangers near especially in the public areas. Leash! leash! leash! thats what I keep telling myself every time (though my dog loves to walk free along the beach being a silly boy)

The attitude of Malaysians (majority) towards animal treatments like for dogs is appalling sometimes regardless one's race and background. A simple mistake they will treat a dog owner like us a criminal or deviant.

Re: [Lady Eloise] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

I'm having a problem here too. Some months back a family moved in next door. All their kids ever do when they are in their compound is to provoke my dog by imitating barks and all sorts of noises. This usually caused my dog to bark back too. Otherwise my dog is usually quiet unless strangers at the gate. I have yet to approach their parents, reason being before I could, they've been giving me hostile looks. At times I even find rubbish thrown over my compound. Nowadays I've resorted to keeping my dog indoor whenever I see their kids outside. But what a way to live, right? For now, I can only wait patiently for my tenancy to end (thank goodness I'm only renting) and look for another place to move to. It's sad as I've been staying in the same place for the last 5 years without any problem. Never know one difficult neighbour can change all that.

Re: [blitzen] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

ive my share of encounters with Malays particular who sees me holding my toy dog in supermarket and walk a mile around me so afraid the dog may jump and mutate her or something which is awfully silly cause I move to one side carrying my dog very tightly and there was gap walking area huge for fat man to pass and sometimes surprising pleasant experience like when I went to saloon with my dog on my lap there was this Malay guy waiting for his gf doing her hair and I move aside and he said quickly; no no don’t need to move away I like dogs and he smiled....and his gf is the type conservative wearing tudung.

my suggestion is to create awareness like maybe a poster or a rally telling ppl or even casually talking to some malay friends if this topic comes up on how to not provoke dogs and understand body language of dogs....like dont run or shout madly creating attention to dog to play/attack.its pity that the islamic teaching here is so shallow regards to dogs

Re: [valanese] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

Yeah... Not every Malay really so 'scared' about dogs. I've met quite alot Malays in Cameron Highlands that doesn't really reject dogs. They somehow love to come near and ask about your dogs. Once I've met a Malay woman, she came and ask... "Is your doggie dry?", I said yes and she tried to pat Goofy's head, I of course quickly hold Goofy's muzzle, bcoz Goofy always welcome ppl with licks!!!Tongue... Then she asked about Goofy.. What is Goofy's breed, what he normally eat, then lastly, "is this a boy or a gal?" I told her Goofy is a boy, and she pat softly Goofy's back again and said "Cute boy, good boy." Some of the malay parents with children, came and touched Goofy as well...but most of them would ask whether Goofy is dry lo... They just tried to touch Goofy's tail and leg as I was having Goofy in my arms... So far, mostly Malays that I met, doesn't much reject dogs. Maybe I'm still lucky...heheheTongue

I knw this is an old thread, but I still wish to comment. My apology to you on behalf of the unruly Malays that have disturbed u and ur furkids evening walk. I am a Malay dog owner & I understand how u feel.

I guess, this unruly behaviour bogged down to how these children are being raised. Their perception towards animal. I bet you, its not only dogs that are being attacked or abused, its also cats, frogs and other animals. This ppl are not thot how to share, love & respect god's creature.

The Holy Quran and prophet Mohammad, has only good teaching and guidelines in enhancing the Muslims life. These are the ppl that potray bad image and projection towards Islamic and its teaching. Muslim is a beautiful religion that has never taught its followers to abuse/torture or show disrespect to others including plants and animals..

Sad to see how these children will grow up to be. You dont have to wonder now, where are all the Mat Rempit come from !!!!Sly

Myza, that's y I said, those malays that gave real rude idea bout dogs came from their parental guidance at home... where their parents themself gave narrow teaching bout dogs in their Muslim education.. Not only Muslim, I believe every religions are beautiful... no religion teaches their followers to abuse or attack or this kind of cruel ways to anykind of living being...

And of course I'm so happy to meet so many Malays whom are real friendly to dogs, especially you

Re: [myzanordin] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

hi all, kinda read the thread late. here are things u can do

1) if threatened you can file a police report. Record a video/pictures of the act. to make things more effective(although not the best way) file the report as harrasement and property damage. they ARE harrasing u right? and by throwing rubbish and and stones, they are directly damaging your property.

2) while on walks, unfortunately not much you can do, you can beat them once, but i'm more afraid of them coming back with a vengence. if you are harrassed on walks, u can also file a report as this is harrasment. you have already warned them and asked them to leave. by continuation doing so, is by law harrasement. by provoking your dog and you, that's physical harm.

kids or adults, they need to know the law and omg at parents encouraing kids. and they ask why ours kids nowadays learn "stuff" from schools. i'm certain it's the parents who are teaching them. I've seen a father giving the finger with his kid in the car. and mind you he was driving a S-Class Mercs.

Re: [Nicholas] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

i guess its quite late to post here.. but i'll post it just the same...

an indian colleague of mine has 2 dogs that look like Gsd or something and they are quite a handfull.. but they only bark at strangers at the gate. anyway unfortunately one of his neighbor is a malay and does not like it at all... they have complained to the Klang council and my colleague was already booked 3 times and was given 1 month to rehome one of the dogs.

However, before the one month was up, the malay owners house was visited by a few robbers... and apparently after going in the gate, they could not get out as the malay neighbours house door has those big double locks and my colleagues dogs at the gate. thanks to that the malay neighbour withdrew all his complaints and apparently is providing half of the food for the dogs...

see see...dah rasa baru tau...hahahahaha Tongue

The wonderful things about dogs, they see no color/religion/race. They do what they instinctively know is right. And the sad part, they so naively do what they instinctively know is right without realising that their actions can actually put them on the death row in this country.

They are mankind's hero and yet they are so disgustingly frowned upon by others.

I kiss my dogs and let them lick my face. I even share my Mcflurry with them. The disgusted expression on some of my neighbor's face, no words can describe. Especially from that neighbor who has like a dozen cats with her that she lets out freely to roam and dump on other ppl's grass patch. wait lah...their express ticket to reincarnation will be issued one of these days. Re: [crazymouse_yyh] I had the similar problem too

i say it isnt fair. why should we have to live in fear and deprive our dogs of walks because of malays. release the dog on them and teach them a lesson they will never forget.

Re: [myzanordin] My furkid & I were "attacked" during our evening walk by Malays

I’m writing this thread not because I anti-Malay. I have nothing against the Malays. I just lost my GR few weeks ago. My GR, type of friendly dog. She didn’t disturb ppl. Whole days she play in the garden. But someone who hates her poisoned her.

Most of my cross live neighbors are Malays. They dislike dog. I knew that we should respect Malays privacy. Since I moved to my new house, we were away from the Malay kids, Malays houses, etc. Sometimes, the parent will shout at the children when they outside my house that “Jangan dekat rumah dia, Nanti anjing dia gigit awak”. One days, accidentally my dog runs away without leash. One of the Malays guy came to my house asked why I left my dog out. I sincere apologized to him that its accidentally. Days after, another Malays guy came to complaint that my dog ‘bulu’ ‘terbang’ to their house. Just image that it is possible because he house far away from mine and we clean it few times daily. I just want to ask how did you change some ppl perception especially Malays? For me, recently most of the Malays well educated. Why they can’t think in the positive way? Why they can’t respect dog also a ‘nyawa’ and their have right to survive? Why Malays can't respect to Chinese privacy?

Hi friend,

I want to share my experience with you.
I had a gr, a nice and healthy gr, was sent to hospital due to overfrighten and wasted me rm1k. It was done by my good neighbour which is a malay family. well there are also chinese do not like cats, they poo at chinese house, do we make it a big news? do the government care?
I just can tell you, they will not care, this is the bolehland.
my 2 cents. Hate those bloody fakers.
