what breed of my YaYa??

hey,
can u all help me to identify the breed of my YaYa?? the person who sell her to me also don't know exactly what breed of her, he just say is terrier.. em.. but when i bring her out, many people say she is shih tzu... so confusing... Frown

she now is almost 6 months old, around 3.6kg... and she only have one layer coat.. but her coat is like cotton base..her 4 legs have some tan color coat.. her ear is v shape and quite small, and one ear can stand half, another ear can't..

i m not mind about her breed b4 this, but just start curious to know when so many people say she is shih tzu???? and this is not same as what the seller told me..

so, pls give me your opinion oh!!

yaya look like is a shih tzu terrier mix..she got the "face" and the coat..she look slighty bigger than a shih tzu..

em..actually yaya face is quite small, wat make her face look big is the fur... i always thought that shih tzu face is quite round one and their nose is not sharp, but yaya have a sharp nose... and i did compare yaya to a real shih tzu b4 this..i can say their face is not same le..

some people(mostly from those pet shop owner) also say yaya is a shih tzu cross that look not so like shih tzu, they think she is unsuccessful cross which is means ugly... Pirate

but for me, she always cute lah!! Frown

Shih tzu's face also small. It's the fur that makes it big mah. I see the expression of your YaYa... is the same. Yes, the terrier part would be her sharp nose and her colour. I dunno lah... but for me, I can see some shih tzuness in her. Yesterday I went to a petshop, got a shih tzu cross terrier, pure black summore and not as nice as your Yaya.
All dogs aren't ugly, everything is beautiful. Those who say they are ugly are blinded.

i also have 2 local breed dog(yangyang&da da) lah!! then i will be double luck than u le..hehe!! Frown

they are nice oh.. the big one quite obedient, only the small one stuborn a bit, .. but the small one very funny one la.. always do stupid thing to make us laugh..haha.. Laugh

my ex-housemate dun like both of them(that time haven buy yaya yet) one lo, once b4 they did think to ask me to throw them, but i didn't la.. tak sampai hati one ma.. fortunately, now my new housemate (ex-housemate graduate already)all like dog one, they even help me to take care of them sometimes when i m not free.. and sometimes bring them to go walk2 too.. but hor.. really like pull bull like that lah!! Tongue

start september i will be free a bit, and dun need to come to campus everyday, then have to train them liao... i never train them b4 la, dun think necessary last time..but now they grow bigger and bigger, if still not being trained, will be dangarous la..

those who say yaya is ugly, the main reason is because yaya have black colour coat body lo.. and some of them even duno there is a breed call silky terrier, so they just think yaya is just "cin cai" breed over shih tzu and maybe stray dog.. many people here thought all long loat doggie is shih tzu one la!! i also lazy to explain liao... Tongue

black shih tzu & terrier cross ah..never see b4 oh.. last time when i bought yaya, she is with her sister, but her sister is look exactly the same like her le.. just smaller a bit, and the boss told me, her sister eat only a little bit.. but her fur like fall a lot la.. the boss told me is becoz she changing her puppy fur, but i just afraid she have skin problem la.. and yaya look healtier lo, so i choose yaya.. spend too much during that time, otherwise will consider to bring both of them back la.. Yah... the head is small. Shih tzu also got a lot of fur that covers their head hehehehe....

Aiyah, those people know nothing about dogs then if they thought everything with long fur is shih tzu.

The black shih tzu mix terrier no shih tzu face at all. Even the fur is rough, like a scottish terrier or something... It's really black and the face I think longer than your YaYa's nose.

Hahaha... How I know? Coz the petshop said so... put the sign say shih tzu mix terrier. Yah, got more of the terrier looks lah that puppy. But sell I think Rm680.

Naughty is good. Means she is full of life and very active hehehe.... terriers are like that. My friend's terrier mix also very naughty and active, even already 8 years old ah, never act old also.

wah!!rm680 ah..i buy my yaya only at rm480 something like that.. because yaya is a female puppy, for the male one, they sell at rm680.. male puppy more "laku" here lo... Frown

already 8 years old still active ah? die la.. i still hoping that after yaya 2 years old like that can become not so active le..

now they all treat her as our house princess liao la.. last time she wun bark when i am not stay in room one, but now she will bark to get my attention every time i go out of room.. i have to scold her "kuat kuat" to make she quiet. this is becoz my housemate always let her out of room whenever she bark at them lo..then she think that she can bark to get our attention.. Unsure

normally i only will let her out when the time i can keep an eye on her la.. coz afraid she will simply eat thing lo..

Yah, my friend's terrier is very active and smart. Good thing about this dog is never bark wan and knows how to pee and poo in the toilet.

em... i also a bit less lucky than u only la.. since i got 2 local breed, and one yaya(she also mixed la, just maybe not mix so many kind of dog lo)then.. i less maybe 1/3 lucky than u only lo.. also so lucky liao lah!!hehe... Frown

kuching here seldom heard people say got training section le.. even the doggie gathering i also just knew recently, have brought yaya go there 2 times liao, not much dog there, mostly big dog la.. i think yaya is the only non-pure dog there..hehe.. Tongue

actually that is orgarnise by MKA sarawak la.. but open for public i think, since there is only a normal park.. yaya like to go there lo... knows many frens ma..:)

doggie here wun sell in very expensive price la..especially those small breed.. shih tzu they also sell less than rm500 without cert.. but maltese more expensive, they sell around rm800, same to chi hwa hwa too..

yaya also know how to do her business on her own toilet(i buy those cat use toilet & put news paper inside for her, here cant get those doggie toilet la.. Frown

), i make 2 days hard train on her lo.. follow her every where she go.. & bring her immediately to her toilet when she showing pee & poo signal.. finally, she know how to go to her toilet..hehe..

all my dog like to bark le.. especially that 2 stay outside one.. whenever got stray dog pass by, they will start to bark... Frown

my housing area got more and more stray dog liao lo... some is people feeding one, but just let them go around like no master at all.. then they match togather and product more n more stray dog...

sometimes, i did give food to those stray dog who come infront my house during my yang yang & da da dinner time la.. then now turn up as they like to come my house, and always make my doggie bark at them... Pirate

but they are quite nice actually, just i cant afford to rear for any big dog anymore..

sometimes if i walk back home, and they see me, they will just follow me like a bodyguard like that.. 1st time i so scared la..thought they wan to bite me..(hehe..eventhought i like dog, but i quite scared big dog actually) Tongue

then now i know they just maybe wan to ask some food from me la.. so when i reach home, will feed them my yang yang & da da kibbles.. but actually many people here feeding them i think, coz they are not skiny at all..

Wah... shih tzu less than rm500 is rare here. Normally no cert in kl already rm600 is hard to find, mostly is rm800.

Oh... that's good. 2 days is not bad. My friend's dog automatic hehehe... she adopted the dog and it was very well trained. At least your dog uses a tray. My friend's dog really pee and poo near the toilet wan, the squatting version so easily can clean.

Oh, your place there a lot of strays? Wah... that means a lot of puppies around loh when they breed. You are very kind to feed them. I also feed the stray cats around my area if I see them. Got a lot but they are scared of humans....

You must live very happily, got so many doggies around you hehehehe....

em..seldom see puppy here.. maybe some people adopted them.. people here always prefer to adopt the puppy, and dun wan the adult dog.. it just u never see any puppy, but then suddenly got many adult stray dog appear.. think maybe some people keep the puppy, then when the puppy growth up, they just throw them due to certain reasons gua.. cat here all easy to get thing to eat gua i think.. seldom see stray cat, but the place they appear, always is my kitchen.. and during the time i cook..haha.. they are proud one le.. i give plain rice they also refuse to eat la.. unless i give fish o sotong like that le.. Crazy

Yah... seldom puppies. Or if got puppies ah, people normally want purebreed instead of the mixbreed and mongrel. For adoption of course lah is rarely purebreed. You know, I get so many calls from people coz I put up ads saying I got puppies for adoption. I also put saying the puppies are mixbreed and mongrels but ah, they stil call and ask me if I got silky terrier lah or maltese for free. Wah.... if I got those breed ah, sure very popular loh me, give away pure breeds hahahaah....

Sad to say, many people take in the puppies, after when they bigger, like what you said lah, they get thrown out and become strays... so poor thing.

Cats ah, very smart at getting food wan. My taman here ah, got many stray cats but never see them stray. Why? Coz my neighbour is a caterer and they feed all the stray cats wan. So no need to worry about them. Malays and some chinese like to care for these stray cats but not many like to care about the stray dogs...

Wah... you give fish and sotong? Hehehe...sure they go into your kitchen lah like that

maybe those people forget here is malaysia gua.. i saw some foreign country websites b4, yup..they did do the rescue & adoption for breed like yorkie la, silky, maltese... etc. but i wonder in malaysia we got chance to adopt these breed..

puppy always look cute ma, when people buy it, they didn't think too much.. but after they get tired of take care of the dog, then they just to throw them.. Frown

i m not cooking always la... so didn't give them sotong & fish always too..just when the time i cook & they come, then give a bit lo.. Tongue

Hahha... ok, will inform you. Once a while will get purebreeds lah like labrador, GSD, once got a shih tzu... but they very fast people adopt wan... but if you look at these purebreeds that rescued or for adoptions ah, some are nice house pets... some kena abused, neglected or plain problem dogs... I came across a few and was very hard to rehome. Malaysia ah... if the dog still puppy and they don't like, some will sell off to petshop loh or just give away to their friends. Got some give to breeders also. That's why so hard to find purebreeds for adoption unless someone migrate. Number 1 dog breed that need rescuing the most is the street dogs of Malaysia, the wonderful mongrels.

I have seen people throw puppies away. Dunno, I think these people heartless lah just throw on the street. I ask why not bring to shelter and they just say throw on street is easy and free and the dog got freedom, in shelter sure must pay money and will die. Yah lah, bring to shelter is a risk.. but I think put them in the street is worst loh. They won't know where to find food, get into fights with bigger and fiercer dogs, maybe get run over by car.... so sad...

Why don't you get some cheap catfood? Or, I know some restaurants don't mind giving left over food to you if you want to feed to stray animals. I did asked a restaurant before and they give me a big bag of the soup chicken bones and meat for me to help my friend catch a dog.

yup..some of the restaurant here also dun mind to give out left over food.. coz last time when my yang yang(my 1st mongrel) still refuse to eat dog food, i always go to ta bao human food to him... then when the boss know i ta bao for my dog, he say he can keep those left over food for me.. but i never take la.. my bf think not good for yang yang eat left over food lo.. (hehe.. actually not good for yang yang eat human food also la.. but we duno that time.. Blush

)

then when my second mongrel come in, we train him to eat dog food from puppy... very strange, after that, yang yang also follow and start to eat dog food liao.. fortunately la... otherwise i will bankrupt for his food le.. Crazy

Ohhh.... well, that's good of the restaurant boss there. Actually, long term ah, human food is not good for dogs coz contain a lot of salt and sugar. But if specially preprare then it's ok lah.

Some dogs will follow what the other dogs eat. Like competing lah eheheheh...

hey there.... my kinki also dun like dog food 1.... especially those that is more expensive..... haih....

wat to say.... i think she's genetically inherited by her parent mongrels that not used to eat dog food....

but nonetheless i force her to eat dog food by starving her..... wuakakaka...... so bad~~~~

but then later i learn about BARF..... so i decided to feed her home prepare food for her....

her loves raw meat and chicken wings.....

haha..good la..ur kinki save money for u ma..:) i have to train all my dog eat dog kibbles la..coz i dun have much time to prepare morning food for them.. but will feed them rice mix with canned food at evening.. all my dog love to eat anything excepts their dog food..haha..:)

HAhah.. You also tasted dogfood ah? I have tasted many brands liao... My late Willy likes Cesar, he doesn't like Canidae canned food. I tried mah, it tasted like chicken stock, a bit salty also.... But Evolve the canned food is nice. Bark canned food also good.

Dog treats... I have tried a few too. Some taste quite nice... some ah, like eating potato only... no taste and smell and this stuff Willy don't like.

usually i'll wanna buy a big canned 1...coz its cheaper than smaller canned....

but kinki cannot finish in time..... and it got rotten....

n she dun like BARk and even ALPO..... she'll starve herself for the day.....

she only will eat Cesar and eukanuba canned food.... but its too expensive for long term consumption....kinki eats a lot....

Yah... the big can of Bark spoils fast. Finally, I have found someone who also taste dogfood hahaha....

So far, Cesar still the favourite but expebsive also lah. Ekanuba I have not tried... but Evolve is nice. Taste very meaty but expensive lah. It's like RM6 a small can... they got smaller cans like catfood wan and is rm3.

Yah, should do big cans of Cesar... coz I think I would have to feed 3 cans of Cesar to each of my big dogs hahahahah....

Hedgehog easy to rear, as long can provide daily handling and holistic catfood and dogfood ah, it's easy. No, doesn't bite but will sometimes be grumpy.

the iguana is own by my uncle.... who treat my house like a foster home for all his creature....

it lives at my house for more than 6 years.....

n when my uncle decided to bring back the iguana to stay at his condo.....

but then when the iguana stay there.....his behaviour change and refuse to eat....

n finally he was starve to death....kinda suicide ... Frown

i think probably he is not use and upset wit his new environment and maybe he just miss me too much .......hahahaha....... Laugh

Well, learning to ride properly is good. So far, I can only walk a horse and trot hahah... wish I knew how to canter a horse hahaha... I always wanted to learn to ride but my parents say it's expensive. You won't be the eldest there but maybe in the beginners class you would be. But it's really fun. My friend use to ride there and her horse's name was Strawberry I think... well, my friend is now studying in UK so she's not there anymore.

Difficult to rear or not if it's a baby? What are the basic care needed? Is hedgehog only active at night, why I didn't see them moving/eating in the petshop?

My son likes reptiles (including snake Pirate

), hamsters & exotic pets, he likes these more than dogs, luckily he is only 7 yrs old, otherwise he will buy & keep at home, then I will have to run away Crazy

For me, I like most of the animals except reptiles (not including tortoise & turtles). Apart from 2 doggies, I have 1 star tortoise, 1 pig-nosed turtle (or called fly river turtle), 3 normal turtles, some koi fish (belongs to my husband) & some tropical fish. Before that I had 4 hamsters, 1 rabbit & a pair of serama chickens....My husband said the house is like a zoo, but that's my interest, sure I will have more animals when my sons grow up later!

Yes, animals will commit suicide wan....last time our arowana fish also starved himself until dead..... Frown

Maybe this is their only way to get out of the environment that they don't like, coz they can do nothing to make any changes mah...if we didn't get the indication and do precaution earlier, then they just die lor after sometime....

i don't think its very expensive until tat we can't afford for it.....depends only whether u want to spend on it a not....

but my dad keep on saying tats too dangerous..... like 'who' and 'who' got paralyzed....bla bla bla~~~

for beginners....its about RM345 per month.....twice a week....

after u had finish all three levels ....they will give u a cert....

they also teach 'jumping' and 'dressage'....

n they had competition almost every months wit other riding school....

i plan to join during oct...r u interested too?

just found out tat bkt kiara will onli offer riding course for non-member onli for beginner level... if u wish to continue, u had to become member...hahaha.......

they use this kind of technique to attract ppl to join their club..

anyway maybe i should opt for Selangor Turf Club.. thought its kinda far from where i stay...its course its cheaper...onli 260 per month...

Oh, are you interested in one? Mind you, they are prickly and aren't very suitable fo young children but if you'd like to know, I have a few contacts. The breeder I got from isn't a very good breeder, among all the hedgehogs, only Sparky was the healtiest and friendliest. I have 2 contacts of home breeders, slightly more expensive, around RM250 to RM200 but they are human friendly and socialble. Outside selling expensive coz they want to earn profit... but ah, do not buy from petshops, they give the wrong food and most likely sick, unless you lucky and bought a healthy one.

Hedgehogs not difficult to rear at all. But you must take care of the diet. They must eat holistic natural catfood and dogfood, so a bit expensive. Hedgehogs can eat hard boiled eggs, cooked chicken and beef meat, strawberries, blueberries, melons, banana and beetles and mealworms.

Hedgehogs are only active at night, during the day, they sleep and they eat two meals during the night and love to walk and play. Easy to keep coz don't need wood shavings. The petshops don't know about it and in the long term, the oils from the woodshavings can cause death to a hedgehog. I put towels as bedding and wash them every 2 days.

Ah. your young so likes reptiles. I love reptiles but I'm only allowed to keep tortoises. I have one star tortoise, 3 years old already. How about yours? Wow, you also have a lot of pets eh? Oh oh... since your son likes animals, do you want to get a gerbil@ kangaroo rat for a pet? Tamer than hamsters and more fun to have. I'm currently breeding to popularize this pet. Giving away for FREE. You interested? Gerbils don't smell, don't need special cage, don't bite, eat lots of grains and toys are economical hahah.... I have 2 wonderful baby females that would need good new homes.

By the way, just curious, I'd like to know the diet you are feeding your tortoises. I found out that many keep star tortoise but give wrong kind of food, which makes them sick, and so on. Petshops give the wrong information and new owners always follow and give wrong diet.

Ah... no wonder. My friend was a member there. She had bad luck. She was and still is a very good rider but one day while jumping her horse, she fell and sprained her back and couldn't ride for months.

RM260 a month ah? Hmmm... I must think about it wor... coz now I'm a bit broke... that fee is gonna take up half my allowance... sigh.... but it is cheaper than Bky Kiara a lot and I think my family's dentist horses are there heheheh...

my fren who work as a promoter there can earn more than 1500 per month... n my school onli starts after CNY , so i can even get triple paid if i work during CNY.... hahah.......

bought them from those shop tat sells fish.... i think probably more than 6 years ago.....

initially i feed them wit commercial tortoise food, those green pellets.... but then later i feed them vege from my frigde....hahahaha....

do u feed ur tortoise everyday??? i only feed them once every 2 or 3 days.......

RM200-RM250 for a baby hedgehog? How old will it be & what's the size like? Ya...can see that food is a little problem (need beetles & worms some more), my dogs also don't get holistic food, just super premium only Wink

Do they eat very little, just 2 meals per night, need to wake up middle of the night to feed or not? Do they prefer to be alone, i mean solitary? Do they need human interaction or I can just keep for watching? They like to play ar....what do they play? Totally agree with you that most petshops don't know much about the animals that they are selling, most of them just give papaya to the star tortoises!

Hehe...I have my star tortoise for about 3 yrs also, I give her mainly vegetables (sawi, kangkung, tomato, cucumber & sometimes lettuce). My tortoise doesn't like fruits so much, so far she eats only watermelon, but we don't give frequent because we seldom eat :), my friend's star eats banana & papaya also.....When I have more time, I will give her succulents (I purposely plant it), hibiscus flower & rose flower (if happens to have flowers in my garden), sometimes I pick from neighbours when I bring Daisy out for walk Tongue

I supplement with minerals also (my friend more hardworking, she smashed the egg shells & sprinke the powder to the food for her tortoise). I keep my tortoise in a plastic container, I put paper (last time I used to put soil, but very messy when comes to cleaning), and I have a shallow water bowl for her to soak in. She gets walks in the garden during weekends.....

O, I didn't know much about gerbils, so I did some survey on Gerbils just now, seems that they don't like to be alone, so a pair of females is great! Let me talk to my son & husband first...What do I need, I don't have all the hamster stuff already....Do you have pictures of your gerbils together with the housing? Then I'll have the idea on what to provide to them! What color are they (the fur) & whether black/red eyes? Tell you frankly, I'm a bit scared of red eyes animals, I'm also a little scared of botak rat tail..... Unsure

I feed my turtles once a day, I give them mainly turtle pellets, sometimes lettuce & kangkung....My 3 turtles live in semi aquatic environment, whereas my pig-nosed lives together with my koi fish bcoz she is aquatic. For my star tortoise, she is a herbivore, so she eats only vegetables & fruits, I feed her once or twice a day. Your tortoise more than 6 yrs old must be quite big already, I like big tortoise! Smile

Me also don't know what is gerbil, haven't seen a real one before...according to what I saw from the net, it's like a hamster but with furry tail. Sure Hun can tell us more!

star tortoise is brown in colour and usually stay on sand, am i right??

mine is not star tortoise... i just bought mine for RM5 ....haha....those green tortoise....but i dunno wat their species name....

anyway, both of my tortoise .... i think 1 female and 1 male...if i had not mistaken....

the male is called 'kai kai' and the female called ' kuai kuai' Laugh

eventhough they aged more than 6 years... they are not very big... dunno wheter is becoz i feed too little for them or they are just not large tortoise... they are just slightly bigger than my whole palm... Smile

how much is your star tortoise.... the pig noise 1, i saw pets wonderland got sell.. i think is around 150...if not mistaken....but very very small onli...looks so fragile...

i though of buying those tortooise that can grow extremely big 1.... but dunno whether expensive anot..

everytime my uncle will said ' release those tortoise in taman jaya lake la... 'fong sang' ...

but to me its like killing them.... they could survive there in the highly polluted environment....

Yes, Star Tortoise is a land tortoise, it's yellow brown with black stripes that form the star patterns on its shell, it can grow up to 12 inches, cansider small tortoise. I got it for RM90 from Central Market's fish shop, at that time they have 'lelong'. My son named her 'tao tao' Smile

I think your green turtles are called red-eared sliders, something like that. My 3 turtles are similar to the red-eared, but I forgot what they called.

I bought my pig-nosed from an exotic pet shop in Klang about 2 yrs ago, cost me RM60 only, it was small then, about 2-2.5 inches in diameter. Now he/she (don't know the sex) is about 7 inches long, it can grow up to 2 feet long, pretty big so need a big tank later. Some fish shops sell about RM60 also for the very small one, but have to make sure they are healthy, sometimes the shops don't know much about the species. The pig-nosed is solitary, it will be aggresive to its own species when they are big. Initially I put mine in a 2 feet long tank in the house, it was so nice to see her swimming like a sea turtle, very gentle looking. One day, my husband bought 2 lobsters & put them in the same tank, the lobsters are quite aggresive, I scared they will hurt my pig-nosed, then I put her to our koi fish tank outdoor, my koi fish tank is about 7 feet long. She gets more space to swim there, but I don't get the chance to see her swimming up & down anymore Frown

, somemore got a bit algae grows on her shell, actually I need to remove that for her! The pig-nosed won't eat the koi fish, because my koi fish are big. Other than fish & turtle pellets, she eats worms, shrimps and small fish also.

If you are interested in tortoise/turtle, you can check out website www.chelonia.org, they have very details info. there. Many species are not found in Malaysia, but I have contacts if you want some really exotic ones, they can import from overseas. Some can cost from hundreds to thousands RM. If you buy from PetsWonderland or Pet Safari, you have to expect to pay very much more!

coz everytime when i'm having something new wit me... they will die.. Frown

like when i 1st bought a tortoise , it die after 2 days...

it goes same wit the hamster... i bought a pair of hamster and they died within a week... one got eaten by cat and another one, i accidently dropped it down....

my 1st rabbit died of cold.... Frown

my fish died of being sucked out from the host.... and other of infection....

luckily my 1st dog didn't die.... but lost instead....

haih......

anyway i did not give up after all my fish n rabbit n hamster died... i bought again,,,....

and now my hamster breed until cannot fit them all in one cage and i sell them off to pet shops...

my rabbits also multiple fast like breeding machine..... so many of them jumping in the garden... and their poop really smelly....

Wendy, you are welcome to ask all you like. I like sharing my experience and knowledge with people and also learn from them as well.

The rm200- this breeder now has a few I think... probably about 3 months old. Another breeder sells his rm250 but can nego lower price for male and he sells them when they are 8 weeks old. Hesgehogs can live in captivity up to 5 years... some can go up to 7 depending on how the care is given to them. They need to eat holistic food and is only very little. Hedgehogs need to have a mix of 3 brands. I'm currently feeding mine GO Natural catfood(RM14 for 400g), Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul(rm8 for 600g) and Evolve dogfood(rm22 for 1kg++). They eat very little, about 2 tablespoons a day. All you need to do is provide it a small shallow bowl for it with food during the evening and the hedgehog will ration the food to 2 meals. You can start playing and letting the hedgehog out walking around your house around 5pm onwards... they love to walk and explore but can get lost easily in nooks and crannies hahaha. The mealworms you can get from petshops for RM1 and if you keep the mealworms for a month, it can become beetle coz they are actually beetle larvae but look like worms.

Hedgehogs are solitary and need a living space, a minimum of 2 feet by 1 and half feet. Mine i just that and it lives in a Storage box, the largest I could find(RM30). Hedgehogs are very curious creatures so cages are a big NO NO coz they can climb and fall and hurt themselves as well as injure their paws.

They will need constant handling to remain tame. If you don't handle it often, it'll become aggressive and might not like to be touched. Hedgehogs shouldn't be woken up during the day or they will be grumpy and hiss like a cat but they won't hurt us. Their teeth are big or sharp enough to bite.

They love old towels to bury in, cardboard tissue boxes to sleep in and the center of a toilet paper roll. They also love balls with bell in them and you can easily get that for rm1.20 a ball. They also love colourful plastic children safe toys like trucks. You can also give them a stuff toy that is small enough to play with.

You have to bath them once a week with tearless baby shampoo. Put them i a basin with warm water that's about 2 inches. the apply some diluted shampoo on to the body and use an old toothbrush to scrub.

Have to tell you something.... maybe you should stop giving Tomato and any type of fruits. These type of food can cause digestive problems in later life as well as diarrhea. The other foods you give is good enough. Have you tried ladies fingers? Mine loves them and she loves hibiscus as well, leaf and flowers hahaha. My tort also eats sawi and kangkung... once a while romaine lettuce, french beans are once a month along with spinach. Can't give spinach everytime coz it binds the calcium and makes the body pass it out without absorption. French beans is a high protein and fatty vege, shouldn't be a staple diet. I find many petshops here give them cabbage and long beans.. A big NO for their health.

Mine is a female. Does yours have pyramids on it's shells? Means is the shell bumpy? Mine is a bit but lovely hehehe... she's also given vegetarian tortoise pellets on weekends, calcium supplements and she goes on a fast every Monday to clean her digestive system. Mine, name is Mango lives in a storage box with oragnic soil mixed with wood chips and has a shallow bowl of water too and some rocks to dig. Mango also gets weekends in the garden and she loves to dig and get adventurest.

Yup, gerbils live in pairs. i only give them away in single sex pairs coz I don't want inbreeding as well as careless breeding if they aren't from the same gerbil parents. All you need is wood shavings(Don't get Cedar, can cause breathing difficulties), Timothy hay as fiber and bedding also, a 1.5ft by 1ft(RM30) or 2ft by 1ft(RM40) plastic aquarium, an old porcelin cup or jam jar and some toilet roll centers as chew toys. Economical pets, they eat hamster food, stale bread, corn flakes, dry dogfood, oats.... vege and hardboiled egg.

No botak tails and they have black eyes. Their colour is a brown, standard agouti colours. Ready to rehome in 2 months time. As long you can provide them a good home for 5 years, I'll be happy to give them to you.

Ah! You also have Star tortoise? Wah... if we got a few members have, want to have a Star tortoise gathering? Maybe we can bring our tortoise to socialise also hahahaah....

My Star tort, I feed her everyday but on Monday she has to fast to clean her digestive system, it's healthy to do it once a week. I feed sawi the most, then kangkung, hibiscus, grass, romaine lettuce, ladies fingers(if i have any) ... once a while, spinach and french bean. Carrot is also good but only once a while coz high in sugar. On weekends my Tort get to eat vegetarian tortoise pellets for land tortoises.

Amanda, gerbils are kangaroo rats. Mongolian gerbil, you can google and look through the pictures. If you interested tell me ah, I'm breeding and giving away. Me don't get profit, just happy to see people experience gerbils as pets. I breed quality and healthy gerbils that are hand tamed by me.

Ohhh... those green pond turtles. They are called American Red Ear Sliders. Must have a diet of vege and also fish. Mine likes to eat fish. I donated it to my old secondary school's koi pond heheheh.. they only eat the small small fishes and eat turtle pellets.

Aiyo....that mean the first one always has to sacrifice for the next.....but I think the main reason was you were inexperience in the beginning:

1) Maybe you have chosen a sick tortoise

2) You were not careful

3) Rabbit can easily get cold

4) Fish sucked out could be just an accident and fish can get infection easily also when the water is not right

Hehe, hamsters & rabbits will keep on breeding if you don't separate the males & females, so it's your choice lor! Tongue

p/s: Told you wrongly earlier, Star tortoise's shell is black with yellow stripes that form the star patterns, not yellow with blank stripes! Blush

actually last time i got buy some fishes for them.....but its cheap n too many....

my tortoise can't finish them in one day....n the next day those fishes will die....

n its looks so cruel to see those fishes being eaten by the tortoise ....

so now my tortoise are 100% vegetarian..

I seldom give her fruits so not a problem, but she likes tomato a lot, so now I have to stop totally or can cut it down? Have you thought of breeding star tortoise, I believe it is not easy, need lots of knowledge....I thought of getting a male for her, but not easy to find a nice one, they are either too small or not well taken care! I like other land tortoise also, but most of them are too expensive!

My son was so excited when I told him mummy's friend got gerbils for adoption! But I still haven't decided whether to commit or not, you know la children will promise anything when they wanted a pet, finally the parents have to look after for them! Can give me some time to consider?

Ah.. tell you a cheaper and humane way to feed fishes to your turtles. It's good for them coz turtles must have protein, cannot only eat bege alone. What I do is buy RM1 for small fishes, then ah, I drain the water when they still alive and let them sleep in the freezer. It's painless. The cold from the icy freezer makes the fish sleep, like hibernate and then will die in their sleep. So it's painless and humane. Then for me, I just scrape a few fishes a day from the container and drop them in the water. My turtles loved it.

Ah, yours also female? Well, like you, I'm also looking for a male. It's hard coz normally the sex of the tortoise is determin by the heat. So sometimes a whole tank of star torts maybe females or just males.

That's good to hear. Giving fruits as treats once a while is good but try and avoid banana. It's too high in sugar. I learned a tip from a Singaporean star owner, he gives his tortoises the fruit pulp after putting fruits into a juicer. ONce the juice is extracted, only the fiber is left and all the sugar(juice) is gone. So it's good to give them the left over tasteless pulp. I've not tried this but apparently tortoises can live on this diet and love it. If your Daisy loves tomato, I guess if not everyday then it's ok. Try maybe once in 2 weeks.

I know a lady in KL, I lost contact with her but she bred her pair... came out with 4 babies I think and she's keeping it all. Really cute!

Stars love to dig. Mine ah, will dig a shallow hole in the corner and sleep. Yes, I can get a picture for you to see. It's pretty simple. I buy organic humus soil from Ace Hardware store(RM3.50/3.90) and the whole bag can last for a few months. I change the soil once a month. The soil will come damp and when damp, insects will live in it. So what I do is I sun out the soil in a box and leave it to dry under the sun for a day till it's really bone dry. Then I pour it into Mango's box and mix it with woodchips coz woodchips makes the soild drier and cleaner too. Funny, even if I leave the box for a month without cleaning, it doesn't smell at all. All I do is once a week, I scoop out the solid waste that has dried from the woodchips. I also provide pebbles coz they let Mango use her leg muscles to dig extra hard, sort of like excercise.

Mango is actually a faulty tort. She has an undershot beak, very rare case in tortoises and it's not an overgrown beak. Good thing is, although her mouth may look funny, she's still affectionate with me and eats like a pig. Cute way is during the morning when I go near her box, she will wake up from her sleep and stretch out her neck to say "hello, where's breakfast?" Hahaha... she loves to be stroked under the jaw and on her head. I came across a petshop that was selling stars for rm60 near Taman Bahagia...

Well, you just think about it. You have about 2 months to think if you want gerbils hehehe... The babies are still small, so only can go to new homes around 2 months.

Hehe...Daisy is my Golden Retriever, "Tao Tao" is my star tortoise, I didn't give names to my other turtles.....

Interesting...where to buy the woodchips, do you mean woodchips for reptiles? Last time mine didn't work well maybe bcoz the soil I used was not organic and not dry! Where is Tmn Bahagia, are those Star babies? Stars that are sold around my neighbourhood cost about RM100-120 for one baby star, not worth paying that much!

My Star was supposed to be perfect last time, until last 2 weeks. It was Saturday afternoon, she had an accident, somehow her shell was cracked with an opening of about 1cm in width & 6cm in length, can see her body from the opening...I don't know why it happened, I let her out for walks in the garden, I realised this when I wanted to put her back an hour later. We thought maybe Daisy bit it but couldn't see the bite marks, then we thought could be the autogate but we have blocked the hole to the back of the autogate already, I wonder how it happened. I called my vet, he said he needed a special glue but he doesn't have that. Then I tried the other vet, he said he has no experience, he suggested me to see the manager of the reptile store in IKANO. So I went there, the manager said he had no choice but had to force to glue it back, luckily the internal parts are not hurt, she can still walk at that time, looked like she didn't feel anything....My husband went to the Ace Hardware shop to buy a superglue (one that suitable for microwave use), then the man squeezed the shell and closed it back with the glue, got blood came out when he did that.... Unsure

He let it dry then put the glue one more time, he repeated this for 3 times, we waited for nearly 2 hours, then everything ok, I really thanked him for saving Tao Tao, he didn't even charge us a sen....Now Tao Tao is eating & acting like normal, but her shell may not look so nice later as she grows, I'm just glad that she is ok!

Ohh... hahah, my mistake with your pets' names hehehe...

Mango is shy but when touch or greet her properly ah, she will like to be stroked. She also likes to interact with other tortoises. My friend just bought a tiny healthy baby from Pudu market, RM68 and I'm guessing the age of the tortoise is 1 month old... very risky to get at Pudu. At Taman Bahagia, near Taman Megah lah.. the fishshop sells them for RM60 and is like 3 months old. Nice also but I went there like 3 months ago, dunno still there or not lah the tortoises.

Yah, organic peat soil or humus soil is good coz not smelly and natural but dry is the best. It'll only get messy when after Mango dips herself in the water and when she walks around, everything sticks to her but after a while, she dries up and everything falls off. Well, the woodchips are the ones for small animals and can be used on reptiles. Woodshavings also can be used, provided it's not made of Cedar chips.

Oh dear! Tao Tao so cham!!!? Well, there is a vet in Taman Megah which maybe can help. He treats iguanas and also tortoises. Yeoh Klinik Haiwan I think... went there once, at least this vet knows what he is talking lah. Anyway, my own vet tells me that if reptiles to get sick, bring to maybe Zoo negara for help or UPM coz they may know what to do. Wah... very lucky lah that she is Ok. Normally some tortoises may develop infection and would need an artificial shell or something. I suggest you bring Tao Tao to the vet at Taman Megah and see how it goes. May need something to make the shell repair itself and grow back.

My first 2 Star tortoises also from Pudu, the smaller one (could be as tiny as your friend's one) died within a month, before that the petshop owner already told me the mortality rate of 'infant' tortoise is higher....Tao Tao is my 3rd tortoise, when I got her she was already pretty big (at least 3").

Do you know whether I can get those soil from nursery? I definitely want to use it as it will be more interesting for Tao Tao Wink

, but can just go to Zoo Negara meh? I don't know lots of places, not ever familiar with KL that much, so have no idea on how to go UPM/Taman Megah Blush

But can you tell you where is the Yeoh Klinik, maybe some landmarks or in which part of Tmn Megah, I can find out on how to go to Tmn Megah from my husband/friend. I think better to bring Tao Tao to see the vet, at least I will have a peace of mind.

Do you clean the gerbils house weekly? How big is the baby (I mean the size) and when it grows up? Actually how many gerbils do you have now? I read that there is always one pair of dominant male & female in a group and only this dominant pair can breed, I find that this is amazing...I wonder whether you have a group of gerbils, then maybe you'll notice that! Just curious, how many dogs do you have now? Smile

Ah.. I learnt the lesson of buying baby tortoises the hard way. Mango was ok coz I bought her when there weren't many around. In the aquarium, only got 3 tortoises so I chose Mango coz she had a healthier looking shell. The guys who sold me Mango told me to feed cabbage and cucumber... bad diet. I did my research before buying so I knew what to feed her. Then I bought during CNY last year a tiny baby, slightly bigger than a 50 cent coin. Bought Ciku from Pet Safari but ah... 2 months after buying her, showed signs of calcium problem. She couldn't absorb calcium normally and died after a 8 months. I tried everything I could but she couldn't grow at all and died. 8 months also pretty long for her.

The soil ah.... I don't get from nursery coz the soil would be sold outdoors and the soil would have lots of bugs living in them. So I buy from Ace hardware store coz indoors and hardly any bugs in them.

I have only been to Yeoh Klinik once and I stay very far from the clinic. I know the palce got a famous restaurant, Fatty Crab. I don't know about zoo negara but ah, UPM maybe better but in Serdang.

I clean my gerbils' tanks once in two weeks. The baby now is something like the size of a large grape now if you don't count the tail. The can grow to the size of syrian hamsters. How many I have... if don't count the babies ah... now, there are 10 gerbils. I have two groups, each has a dominant female. Males aren't dominant, the females are. If there are 2 dominant females in a single group, can be dangerous coz they may fight for males. But if you only have 2 females and no males around, they will be good sisters. Only dominant females can breed in a group and if a non-dominant female gives birth, the dominant female will kill the babies once born. I learnt this the hard way and lost 3 babies from a litter of 6.

I have 3 dogs living with me while my other dog lives with my aunt who lives near my place.

LOL...interrupt la... no problem wan. Discussion on small pets and tortoises hehehehe... Good lah, my gerbils now all fully booked! Wil have a new litter in 3 months time hehehe and this litter should have very beautiful colours lah.

Last time I used to put live fish in my turtle's basin... but ah... sometimes the fish too fast and will still swim about hahahah.

My turtle last time big wan... till too big ah, I got no pond mah so I donate to my old secondary school's koi pond heheheh... good eh? Turtles still need to eat vege and good protein like prawns ah... some also can eat canned catfood or cooked beef.

Hehehe, I have a hedgehog already.....The 3 breeders' contact no. that you gave me, I managed to contact Leong & Lam, I bought one (male, salt & pepper) from Leong yesterday, bcoz Lam's hedgehog are still small, not ready to sell yet, I can't wait for 2 months Tongue

The hedgehog is very cute, not too shy, so I took many pictures yesterday....I'm still not very good in holding it, took me a while to scoop it up coz I'm scared it'll poke me...when I had him on my palm, he already started moving, so I nervous la....but my son is braver, he just scoop it very fast, some more said not pain wan Crazy

How many hedgehog do you have and what color, to me other colors look almost the same except the albino, can't differentiate leh....

Leong's staff put quite a lot of mealworms and dog food for me when he put the hedgehog in a container, after that I transfered them to my storage box, I didn't use a towel for bedding, I used woodchips since I already have it for my tortoise...yes, I have changed my tortoise house to a bigger one and the bedding to soil & woodchips as suggested by you Smile

I bought the organic humus soil from Carrefour.....But it's a bit geli to see the mealworms wriggling in between the woodchips & woodshavings, but this morning hardly see one already, maybe my hedgehog ate them all already Wink

However, still got some dog food left there, do I need to remove them & replenish with new food?

Another thing is Leong has star tortoise too, he sells RM100 for the size of about 3.5 inches big, can consider oh.....

Oh, remember, hedgehogs are solitary so make sure you get another storage box for the other one next time

It takes time to learn how to hold one. I don't get poked anymore and goten used to handling my Sparky. I only have one, enough space for one at the moment. Mine is a white with some brown... I forgot to email u some pictures... anyway, I couldn't find my camera's cabel so I can't load any pics... silly me... I'll try and find some that I have put up in other forums.

Oh, good that you have changed your torts bedding. They'll enjoy it hahahah... do you see them digging about? Leong has a lot of animals for sale rite? I was so surprised to see so many pets being sold. Anyway, Lam's hedgehogs are better quality. If you get a friendly one from Leong, you are lucky. Please check for mites. Leong's hedgehogs has lots of mites and I had to spend 1 week spraying mite solution on poor Sparky. Hey, maybe one day... if you are free, I can come over and show you how to bath him heheheh... I can also lend you the mite spray since it's a big bottle for such a small animal.

Another thing, do buy the smallest heavy crockery bowl you can find. You have to place the food in it so the hedgehog won't accidently eat the woodchips heheheh.... Mine loves mealworms!!! Well, if you have woodchips, it's ok to use them but once you see any signs or watery eyes or sneezing, do change to towels.

Dogfood... another suggestion, do buy holistic brands. You get thye smallest packet you can find and it can last you a long time. I mix 3 brands and after doing research and sharing info with some American owners, they suggest giving 3 brands of food together is better than only 1 brand. Do not get any dogfood or catfood that got corn inside... can cause fatty liver disease to hedgehogs ah. Actually, I have trouble finishing a brand of food sometimes... coz Evolve ah, rm22 for 1.7kg is a lot for a small hedgehog... barely finished a quarter pack in 3 months! The dogfood, do remove everyday. Mine ah, I no need remove coz have taught him how to eat dogfood. The tip is DO NOT GIVE MEALWORMS for the time being. Let him eat only dogfood and catfood, once he starts eating the kibbles, only give 4 mealworms a day. Too much mealworms is bad for health, too fatty... like junkfood.

OH! Rm100? Hmm.. I'll have to consider that... dunno I can have another since I have so many pets now hahahah... but I so would like to breed hedgehogs, so damn cute when babies that time. What sex is your current hedgie now? Got name yet?

Is Sparky a male too? I think Coochie is quite friendly, he only balls if I don't handle him well, after that he will start exploring my hands and I let him walk around the room too, but I haven't seen him playing with toys yet. Tongue

I have a log which I think it's perfect for Coochie to sleep inside, and he also climbs onto the log while he is awake exploring Smile

Yeah, Lam sounds like a good home breeder for hedgehog, whereas Leong sounds more commercialised, maybe bcoz he breeds and sells many types of animals. Coochie looks perfectly fine now, how do I know whether he got mites? Do I need to go very closely and open his quills to check for mites? Crazy

Yes, I'm going to let Coochie get used to dry food first. I bought a very small pack of Go Natural cat food yesterday, and I asked for a sample packet of Evolve cat food because I saw the Evolve cat food does not offers the very small pack. I gave some to Coochie yesterday, this morning I saw only a few are left, so I guess he had no choice but to eat it la..... Cool

I have to let him get used to cat food first before I give him chicken meat & hard-broiled egg also, right? I saw ppl also recommending the Chicken Soup brand, but not many stores have this brand.

Do you provide wheel to Sparky? Some ppl said hedgehogs run on wheel also, I wonder whether they like it, if yes, I want to get one for Coochie too.

Yes, I think my Star tortoise likes her new home more, she gets more space to walk and she can dig & climb

......the only trouble is the water gets very dirty after she soak in it because got soil in there also, but never mind la, I still need to change the water anyway.

OH, a male. My Sparky is also male. It's good that you have found a nice one. Leong ah... I'd only buy from there coz I didn't have enough money to get one from Lam. Actually, toys isn't much of an important thing to them. Some likes to play with toilet rolls. Sparky wil roll them and toss them and stick his head in them when he is in a mood for some fun. Some hedgies will play witn stuffed toys and toy trucks. Basically, anything brightly coloured will attract them.

To know if Coochie has mites, look at the ears and around the eyes closely, do you see any "dust" moving? If it doesn't then no mites. They are really tiny and looks like dust!

Actually, dogfood or catfood also can. The reason why people give them catfood is because catfood smaller in size and slightly higher in protein. I give both. Today I added a new brand, Royal Canin Babycat formula. It's really tiny!!! Yes, the Chicken Soup brand, you can get at Giant Supermarkets. Sparky really loves this brand, the dogfood kind so I give it to him. Cheaper also, the small pack ah for dogfood, only RM8.

Yes, should provide a wheel unless you can't find one, just bring them out nightly will do. A nice walk around the house is good excercise for them. I'm planning to make my own wheel using a bucket coz PetsWonderland selling the Chinchilla wheels, an ideal size for hedgies but they cost around RM60 over! Anyway, I'll be doing this small project with my brother later in the year once he finishes his exams.

Ah, I also have to change the water everyday. The best part about this, you can pour away the soil to fertilise the garden heheheh....

Haha...I bought Royal Canin on saturday after work too....and I bought a wheel for Coochie, it's a wheel for hamster, I know it's not suitable when she grows big, but I thought since I'm not sure whether she will like it, so I spent RM6.50 first is ok la.....I don't know what is Chincilla wheel, RM60 is very expensive oh....but I saw some bigger wheels in PetsWonderland, cost about RM25, can that fit an adult hedgehog? Making your own wheel with your brother is a very good idea....I can work that with my son too, sure he'll be very excited about it!

Hehe....I have good news oh.....on saturday Choochie didn't play on the wheel, then yesterday night I saw him running & running on the wheel....I'm so happy that he likes it!

Yea...Coochie sticks his head into the toilet roll too...I think he wanted to go inside, but the normal toilet roll is not big enough, good thing is my office uses the big toilet roll, I can get some for him next time....I can keep some for Sparky too! I also have some photos to share with you! Cool

Ah, your Coochie looks so cute and small, no wonder he can fit into a hamster wheel heheheh... My Sparky can't loh, he is 2 times bigger, can fit fully into an adult's palm. Making a homemade wheel is a bit hard, I have found the instructions on how to make one but is a bit tough hahahah... need to buy some hardware stuff. A minimum diameter for a wheel is 11 inches for an adult hedgie. A wheel is good exercise. Hope I get to make one soon for Sparky.

Hahaah... sticks his head into it rite? Sparky does that too but he now likes to dig and hide under a pile of my old shirts. Dunno, I think he finds it cosy and warm hahaha...

Now we must start a hedgehog group liao. Now I know got 3 hedgies in the forum now hehehe....

Yea, I was looking at the DIY instructions for hedgehog wheels the other day, not easy oh....I think I will pass the project to my husband, but I have to wait until he has the mood to do it la.... May I ask you a few questions:

1) Coochie can't finish one tablespoon of food that I gave him in one night, do you think he eats too little?

2) He scatches quite a bit when he is awake, is it normal? I'm worried he got mites, but can't see any dust moving on him...or anything to do with the woodchips/wood shavings?

3) Coochie only wakes up late at night or early morning to play, I know he won't be happy if I wake him up...but I did and he still play after that, do you think this will affect my bonding with him? My son & I can't stay up until 1/2am to play with him... Crazy

Your resize photo of Sparky house seems to have woodshavings, is that right? And there is one corner of 'black' thing there, what is it, is that your shirt? I saw you have a PVC pipe there, looks nice, does Sparky likes spending his time there? Sorry if I say wrongly, coz I can't see it so well. Tongue

Yah, they will be hard to differentiate later coz ours look the same hahahah. Sparky is almost adult size now. Those photos were taken when I first got him in June. So he was slightly smaller last time, now bigger. I bring him to dog gatherings and let him socialise with dogs haahhha.. it's funny to watch the dogs trying to play with him.

How big is Coochie? In inches. I think it's ok for a young hedgehog to eat that much. Still, since he is growing, it's good to add crickets and mealworms into his diet. Sparky gets about 5 mealworms every night.

Yes, I'm afraid it's the woodshavings. The picture ah, I did use woodshavings at first and Sparky kept scratching but after I changed to towels, ok wor. Anyway, maybe got mites also. Try and use Frontline and spray him or bath Coochie in some diluted tick and flea shampoo.

Oh, if you wake them up in the evening is ok. It won't affect the bonding. Just make sure to handle him every evening, poke him here and there and stroke him often to get him used to hands and people. It's also good to let your friends or other family members handle him. Hedgehogs will only really wake up late at night coz it's instinct, less danger during those hours and it's when the insects are flying and roaming about for them to eat.

The black thing is actually a hat(RM5). Those cloth fisherman's hat. Sparky likes to sleep in it. He also likes my old t shirt and buries himself in them to sleep. The PVC pipe, yah, he sleeps in it sometimes but Sparky favours an old tissue box coz warmer than a PVC pipe.

ladee_m got a hedgehog from Leong also.

ya, hedgehogs are so so so cute.. i nearly wanted to get one.. but cannot.. my family takut hedgehog bcs of its spines... hehehe

i also like hamsters... last time i got keep a lot due to non stop breeding.. but i sold the babies to my father friend for rm4/5 one.. but now all die..

i don't like the hamster with the red eye ball. no idea what is the name... kena bite before .. so damn pain... blood coming out..

my fatso is a very fat white hamster wit red eye ball.... i bought him from petaling street....n by the time i reach home...i onli realize that he got onli 1 ear.... Mad

but anyway he looks adorable becoz he is fat....

i bought him to school sometimes.... n my fren keep on bringing him here in there.......until i ask them where is Fatso....n they said dunno wor.... i gave to him,....n then to her.... n then dunno where liao..... Cool

then later i bought 2 wife for him....n its kinda fun to see them doing 'homework' .... haha....n hamster act very cute wan le.... in the upper level of the cage, i put a small little house.... sometimes the wife don let him to go in punya... n push him out....very funny.... Laugh

then later, nightmare happens....they breed non-stop... until i sell those babies away......
(regret 2 buy him wife).....n the most digusting is...sometimes the mother eat the babies.... Crazy

most of the hamster that i handle tends to bite me n i'm afraid to play wit them..... onli Fatso don bite me 1.... no matter what i did to him..... he also can tolerate... sometimes when i think back about it now... i feel so sorry for treating him so badly...alwiz make him turn upside down and throw him up into the air.... Wah, you bought a wife or 2 wives for your Fatso? They do homework ah, more than gerbils, as fast as mice hahahahah.... but ah, mice breed damn fast... I used to have so so many... at one go can have 10 babies, the biggest litter I had from a single mouse at one time was 14 babies!!!!! PIty the mother, she got enough for only 10 babies.

regarding babies eating...its all happen becoz we are inexperience....

for the 1st time my hamster gave birth, i'm so excited n keep on looking at the babies n use some kind of stick to move them..... maybe the mother felt threaten ...so she eat up her babies....

later when someone told me not to disturb the babies........i did as was advise n all the babies finally grew up healthy n strong.....

my mum very pampered the elder wife punya....alwiz give her drink those nutritional drinks ......

the 1st wife its big in size n looks mature......n very experience in doing 'homework'........

but is very fierce towards ppl.......n she can take care her child very well....alwiz placing them in the house n don't allow them to come out....

the 2nd wife is slightly smaller in size.... i think its different kind of breed.... this looks very childish n when my Fatso wanted to approach her....she will use her hand n push him away.....then later she hide inside the house...... n my Fatso become upset n sleep by the corner.....

Ahahah.... not terrible lah... instinct mah. If feel threaten, it wants to protect the babies so nomally stuff into the mouth but the babies in the end suffocate and die. So instinct kicks in again that is to get rid of the babies' body so predators won't come and look for her. So she eats them up loh...coz jamsters dunno how to bury dead bodies mah heheheh....

Oh...you just got Sparky in June? That means he is still young, right? Coochie is about 3-4 inches long now, I'm not sure of his age, maybe 2 months plus....

Yeah, I think it's the beddings too...I changed his beddings last Sunday to woodshavings only (no woodchips), I think the condition improved, so I'll monitor & see...I bathed Coochie last Sunday and he enjoyed it a lot, didn't show any defensiveness Wink

I just started to give him mealworms, I gave him when he's out to play...he didn't want to take the worms directly from me, so I put near to him and it was fun to see him gobble them up...and the best thing is he became more friendly to me after I fed him that way!

Yah... but that time Sparky was already 3 months old... so Sparky is almost reaching adult size now. I guess Coochie is about 2 months. He is able to fit nicely into a hamster wheel.

Sparky sometimes take mealworms from mebut he enjoys searching for it on the floor hahaha. He loves his worms more than his kibble so now cannot give hi mealworms everyday.

OH, the pictures are so so so cute! I bath Sparky in the bathroom sink and he gets a nice swim. Then it's a warm towel snooze after the bath.

Haha....for me it's hard to control not to let Coochie eats the mealworms, unless I don't buy it....It's very fun to see Coochie eating mealworms, got the crunchy sound Tongue

So my husband & children all wanted to feed him mealworms, in the end he gets more than 10 mealworms a day.... Crazy

Yesterday my husband's friend came from outstation to stay in our house and they were chatting late at night, guess what, I woke up at 1am and found that Coochie & the mealworms container were not at upstairs, he must have taken Coochie and fed him with more mealworms Wink

Last week Lam called me, he said he doesn't have any hedgehog babies for sale already because his hedgehog had eaten all her babies ! Frown

He went to check the babies one day, although he used a stick but this time round the mother hedgehog ate the babies the next day.....So hedgehogs also very sensitive like hamsters....

Last time when I bought my 2 hamsters, I was inexperience and didn't bother to check their sex. It happened to be a pair and by the time I knew & separated them, the female was already pregnant, they were together only for a week! I was like prepared for her delivery , gave her lots of food and waited for the day to come. I was so excited when she gave birth to 4 babies, so I used a cloth to cover the cage and not to disturb her. Her cage was always at the balcony and I had blinds to cover the sun & rain. Unfortunately, tragedy still happened, it rained very heavily the next day, when I came back from work at night, to my shock, the cage was flooded with water, the babies were all drown at the lower level and the mother was shivering at the top level waiting for me to rescue. I don't understand why she didn't save her babies! I cried when I used newspaper to pick up the dead bodies, they only lived for a day!

Looks like your family is addicted to Coochie hahahah...Well, he is still a baby so that amount of mealworms is ok but make sure once he reaches adult age, he should be given less mealworms so he won't become over weight.

Hedgehogs are almost like hamsters. Hedgehog mothers all have different instincts. Sometimes if we disturb the cage often, the mother gets aggitated and will eat the babies, or she feels that the babies are sick or weak or he has not been feeding her enough protein so she eats the babies instead.

Your hamster was probably too scared to save anything. Hamsters are easy to breed but unpredictable. Normally mother hamsters if they feel danger, they will run away or if she feels there's time, she'll probably save a baby or two but it's rare. Normally, solitary animals don't save their babies coz it's better to save themselves. Animals that live in packs or groups tend to do all they can to move the babies as soon as possible but if the danger is bad, they'll leave the babies.

That's why I chose gerbils. Mine are so tame, I can handle the babies right after they are born and I'll keep on handling them till they go to their new homes, all tame and playful. This morning, my female gerbil just gave birth to her 3rd litter of 4 babies, 2 are already booked! 2 are still open for booking.

Weird right? Solitray animals will save their babies if the danger is near but doesn't happen at once. If like water and flood, they will leave their babies.

Yup, this is a different litter from a different mother. All very healthy. I dunno if mine are just tame or is it natural for the not to eat their babies. But I can handle them and the mother is ok with it, doesn't freak out or anything.

Hi Hun, have you ever seen your Sparky anoints? Coochie did that yesterday! I read that they have this behaviour before, but can't remember exactly why, so I checked the internet again this morning and found that it's true! Here it says:

Anointing is a possible response that a hedgehog will exhibit when they encounter a smell that they are unfamiliar with. In such an event the hedgehog will possibly bite or chew at the source of the smell, then they will froth at mouth to create a lather. Next they will deposit their foamy saliva on their quills by contorting their bodies. I have seen a many a hedgehog contort their bodies until they fall over, some become so entranced that they become unaware of their surroundings at the time.

Why do hedgehogs anoint

No one is quite sure why hedgehogs anoint. There are many theories out there which try to explain this behavior. A couple of theories are:

The hedgehog is trying to mask their scent to better hide from predators

The foam acts as a toxin to the hedgehog's enemies, causing irritation.

No matter what the real reason is that our spiny friends anoint, it is a perfectly normal behavior, and can be quite amusing to watch.

Yesterday so happened that my 2nd son had stomach pain, so I used the 'Ru Yi' oil to rub his stomach. If you know what is 'Ru Yi' oil, you'll know that it has a very sharp smell. When I went to see Coochie (I was just looking at him, not touching him), immediately he noticed the smell and he anointed. I was so surprised and excited at the same time, he did that twice so I quickly took a photo of him anointing :) I'll share the photo with you next week!

Yeah, it was fun to bathe him...He enjoys it, and I feel like bathing him more frequent although it's not necessary....Did you see the picture that I dried him with towel after that, he let me touched & turned him, so cute oh....I have 2 more photos, one is I rinsed him after the shampoo bath and another one is I dried him after the bath...Enjoy!

talking bout lather.. that day crazymouse brought sparky for everyone to see.. and sparky was in the grassy area..then sparky bite a small piece of grass and chew chew chew and then create lather. then the lather is placed on the grass..

Yes, my Sparky does that too. He likes to anoint using grass. Other than that he won't. He also likes to disturb people when he is out in the living room. He went up to my brother and took hold of his shirt and tugged at it. My brother was so surprised hahahaha....

Hedgehogs will anoint using anything. When I first brought him home, he anointed using dogfood. So messy, had to clean him up. After bath, he anointed again with dogfood hahahha... so funny.

Coochie anoints using his saliva leh....I think it must be very funny when Sparky anointed using dogfood & grass Tongue

Now Coochie takes food from my hand already coz he knows I'll give him yummy food...He even licks my fingers, got twice he nipped my finger leh...I think he must have thought it's food, luckily not painful, scared me lah.....Does Sparky likes Royal Canin cat food, I noticed Coochie does not like it that much, he eats the Go Natural & Evolve, but always leave the Royal Canin behind Frown

Ah, when Sparky feels stressed then he will use his saliva... but they anoint themselves with anything, even newspaper so it's pretty ok. But dogfood and grass is gross, he looks brown and then green hahahaha...

Oh, Sparky nipped me twice when I first got him, after that, no more nipping. It's pretty normal for a hedgie to nip a bit but it's not painful and their teeth are too tiny to puncture our skin.

Sparky at first hated Royal Canin, wouldn't touch it but after a while, he ate everything I gave him. Go Natural and Evovle of course taste better to our hedgies coz it's a holistic and has natural flavours.

Wow, your Star is nice. All stars have different growth, as long the shell is healthy and looks fine, it's good enough. I have seen a star that had to much protein in the diet, wah... the shell deformed....

Anyway, I have found a better pellet brand for tortoise, 100% vegetarian and my Mango loves it.

Thanks for your compliments! What's the pellet brand? I had given Tao Tao vege pellet before, but she didn't like it, so long time didn't give her pellets already. She eats fresh vege once/twice a day, she is always active in the morning to eat....but if I find her active in the evening like looking for food or sometimes she stays in her food bowl, then I'll feed her again Smile

There is one product to make their shells shiny, I wonder whether it's good, do you use that?

BTW, what do you feed your dogs? Can introduce your dogs to me here? I went to the RDO last Sunday, I wanted to meet you guys, but can't recognise any dogs. Thought of calling you also, but because I went with my family somemore w/out dogs, I didn't call lah..... Frown

Yup, I tasted hahah... but it's also the ingredients. Very hard to say how it taste like but it's like eating cream crakers with the smell of meat. Catfood tend to have a sourish after taste... funno why hahahaha....

The pellet brand is Exo Terra adult tortoise food. I give also the calcium supplement for tortoise along with and extra mineral and vitamin D3 supplement once a week. My Mango also loves to eat fresh vege, will get a whole plate full in the morning and during the evening she's normally asleep for the day. She sleeps in a shallow hole she dug and will sleep with her head tucked one side.

I used to feed my dogs home cooked food but now meat is costly and 3 large dogs eat a lot. They are now under a premium brand... Best Choice dogfood and they also get a side of rice. Oh, I went to RDO and brought me Tammy, a lab. I didn't know if you were going hahahah... my friend brought your Coochie's sister I think. Very cute prickly ball.

You give so much supplements to Mango, sure she looks very beautiful! I have mineral supplements for Tao Tao, but I don't give very frequent, I feel she doesn't like it so much after I sprinkle it to her food.

Wow, your friend brought hedgehog to RDO, but I guess she/he didn't let the hedgehog to walk around the park with so many dogs around, right? How is the Best Choice dogfood, is it good? I mean does it really make a difference between premium & super premium? I'd like to cut down my cost on dog food if I can.

Hahaha... I taste what I think is safe to taste. I even tried canned food.

Actually, the supplement only started last year, with the extra mineral and vitamin only this year when I found it and bought it. The brand is also Exo Terra, they have the largest variety for reptiles now. There is Sera brand, but hard to find for reptiles, I see mostly for fish.

Yup, she brought in a small tank. Had to keep under shade so she wasn't let to roam about heheh... also too many dogs. Next time when have small dog parties I'll tell you so you can bring Coochie to socialise. I normally bring Sparky to all small dog parties I attend.

Actually, premium brands and super premium is all about the ingredients. It's not completely natural like some holistic food. The key to know if the dogfood is good is to look at the ingredients, the first ingredient listed should be a meat product. Avoid dogfood with by products and meal as the first ingredient listed. Also, avoid dogfood with corn meal, corn glutten, rice meal and any cereals shouldn't be 1st ingredients. So far my dogs ok lah... the food is way better than the supermarket brands I used to try long time ago.

Thanks, can sms me when you have such gathering. But I wonder, do hedgehogs like to socialise with other animals? What will the hedgehog do when he meet another hedgehog or another animals? Hehe, my question would sound very silly coz I never let coochie to see my other pets. So far my puppy didn't try to touch it when she sees him sleeping in the box, but I think she would want to play with him or bark if she sees him walking/running. Crazy

You can get this brand for like RM12 a packet at Pets Safari, I find it better than Kaytee brand coz less protein.

Yah, when there's a gathering I will tell you. Actually, I know American hedgie owners normally own 2 hedgies but keep them separately and once a while they let them socialize. I find Sparky likes the attention he gets but he's not afraid of dogs. If a dog comes too near he will roll up but will uncurl and go about his business later on. He likes to be handled and likes to roam in grass, and anointing himself hahahah...

Only that time I can touch his face & body, otherwise he is like want to run away from me.....Yeah, their hedgies sound so friendly that they will actually take a nap on their owner's lap, I hope mine will be like that one day Wink

Previously I planned to put my shirt in Coochie's box to let him get use to my scent. So I thought to sleep with it for few days first, somehow my maid washed it, she spoilt my plan lah Mad

Now I got to do it again....I must also let him roam at the lawn, see whether he will anoint with grass! Cool

Ah, Coochie still small. Sparky doesn't like to be picked up but when handled he is ok. Will try and walk off my hands but ok lah, normal coz he is not a laid back hedgie. I found out got a few types, the timid, the laid back and the active. Spark is the active type hahahaha... Sparky today chewed my pants and anointed himself hahhaha... aiyoh Crazy

Sparky sleeps with either a hat or my old shirt. Yah, the scented shirt helps them adjust. Besides a towel will do just find. Just lay the towel on the bed and sleep on it.

Haha...Coochie is the active type too, I noticed he is getting stronger & stronger already, when I hold him in my hands, he pushed really hard to walk away, I think he runs on the wheel too much Tongue

O, I have to tell you that I bought the 12" wheel for him already (can't wait to make one for him), coz he can't fit into his hamster wheel anymore, although he still tried to 'run' on it with half of his body in the wheel and other half outside of the wheel Crazy

Remember I want to show you the photo that he anointed, here is another occasion whereby I put one hedgehog like coin-bank into his box, he played with it then anointed....look at the saliva in his mouth...haha.....

The wheel I bought from Midvalley PetsWonderland, cost me RM55. No choice lah, have to give him the right size this time. The coinbox is very cute right, it's a hedgie but looks a bit like a rugby, I bought it for decoration in my office since I can't put Coochie there, not for Coochie to play actually Wink

O, I forgot to ask you, does Sparky eat other food like egg/meat, I've tried giving mine hard-boiled egg, but he didn't eat it.....

HAhaha.. I've seen that coin box, very cute. The had other animals too but I thing the hedgehog one is the cutest hahahah...

Sparky doesn't like fruits. He won't touch banana, which according to some people are hedgie's fav fruit. I've not tried hard boiled egg but I did try steamed fish, he ate a bit.
