shih tzu...
hi! i'm buying a dog soon, and it will be a shih tzu, or shih tzu mix... erm, my budget is around400-500... 500 maximum, coz im using my own money to buy... where can i get it for a low price? i cannot afford more than rm500, coz i only have 400... my mum give me a bit, coz she doesnt agree to buy a dog... please help me!

hi justin, i have a suggestion, y not get a short fur dog like pug, jack russel..? because shih tzu has long fur, u need to groom him or send to groomer evry mth , the expenses is higher as u need spend on grooming ( rm 60-80 for one time) , and shih tzu tend to have sensitive skin,eye problem, then the medical bills will be very high too ( like my shih tzu, i spent at least rm 200-300 for every 3 mths to see the vet due to his sensitive skin, n he needs special food).

so with ur budget, i would advice u get other breed, or u can get shih tzu, but be prepare to spend on his medical and grooming fees. such expenses u wont be able to see now but the bills will come once u get it..:)

hi, i went to spca today... oh God, the dogs there... pity them, stuck in the cage... n the smell... awwwww... most of the dogs there r big... n agressive! n there's a dog, with 5 pups... damn cute, but i cant adopt, coz it will grow big... then i saw a terrier mix dog, quite cute, n sweet... so i told my mum, im gonna take that dog... so we ask the woman in the office(short hair) she told us that someone will inspect our house... n then she ask how big is my house, my mum told her that we r living in apartment... she dun let us adopt it... coz we r living in apartment... *sob sob* so erm... do u know where can i buy cheap shih tzu or mix... i know min pin is qwuite cheap, n i liek it too, but my mum say its too active, n she dun like it... my budget is below RM500... 500 is ok... without cert better, coz cheaper... :P

then look for star newspaper classified column, call all the breeder, some do sell without cert at rm 500! but u have to negotiate

oh, i read it everyday, n so far i've called many shih tzu breeder... cheapest also RM700... n pekingese mix shiuh tzu also RM700... i'll try to talk to my mum, for a min pin... even i i get a shih tzu for a very cheap price, i still have to pay a lot more, like vaccination, heartguard, grooming, food, crate... n etc...

Hmm.... one time I came across a breeder selling with MKA for RM500 but it was like few months ago.... but let me see what I can find. If it's mix shih tzu with terrier ok? Coz I got friend who's shih tzu mix might have puppies... but I dunno willing to give away or not .....

Wah... you just got a Toy poodle? Congrats!!! Must celebrate Heehe..

So what colour is it? Yah RM500 is cheap... wah, like that me also wan ahahahah... But I can't take anymore... 5 dogs enough for me liao hahaha....

To name it, what you do is come up with a list you like your dog to be called and then try calling the dog.... if the pup respond and to you the name sounds nice ah, give loh. I named my shih tzu Willy after Free Willy movie coz he black and white like the whale..... I named my boxers Rexx coz he look fierce, my other boxer Toby coz Scooby don't sound nice... Tammy for my lab coz she so sweet and Boxen for my mix breed coz he has a boxy and funny attitude. Take your time lah, no worries. YOu sure cannot sleep now coz got new puppy to play hahaha...

hey... i'm so sorry, coz my dad had changed the name... cozs my grandma n youngest brother couldnt really pronouns 'prince'... my dad changed it to Figo... wierd but cute :P he's doing great, n he already knows where to pee n poo... but the problem is, every night he'll make very loud noise, i think he's afraid... but really headache lar... what shouyld i do if he make noise again? especially at 3-4 am... adoi... anyway, u guys changed sprv to marg?

erm... the breeder has another pup, its a female, black n white... quite nice, but tell ur fren to prepare, coz i found a few fleas on the pup! i bought a flea spray n shampoo, now dun have lia (i guess :P) n it comes with a cert... so 500 is very cheap... the actual price is 600, i asked him to reduce the price, n he say 550... then i say 550 too expensive, so he say 500 lor... hehehe... this is the num 012 2670113... besides poodle, he has shih tzu n gr too... but the cheapest is poodle lar :P im telling u, poodle is really smart, very cute... i bought him a basket, at irst, he act like cannot climb out, but at night, he jump out easily... hahaha... today, i bought him a big crate, he quite like it... im still afraid that he might make noise again tonight... aiyoh... hey, what does MARG stands for?

OK, thanks a lot. Yah, poodles are one of the smartest dogs. They were once bred to be circus and gypsy dogs to preform tricks. Poodles are also a breed that can stand and walk on their hind liges for a long time, longer than normal dogs hgehehehe....

MARG stands for ... but no more liao loh... me haven't change yet hehehe.....

My uncle has a brood of poodles. He is always asking me to take a puppy but having 2 rottweilers already quite bankrupt oledi. Eat banyak, crap oso banyak and being old oledi, their supplements costs are quite substantial too.

Poodles are cute. I think they dun shed hair but boy, are they active. Should teach them tricks as they are very intelligent and loves to perform. Quite yappy and noisy.

You must find out why Figo makes noise at that particular time. Lonely? Can't sleep? The mosque prayers irritate him? My dogs have a tendency to howl at 5am to coincide with the mosque prayers. Not much these days but once in a while. When my boy was a young puppy, I left him in a room all by himself. He did not make any noise as I also put a radio on 24 hrs for him and a loud ticking clock. He was as quiet as a mouse.

You can afford a mix breed bcs mix breeds are cheaper than the pure breeds. You can lookup the newspaper 4 some dogs and how much do the ppl sell. Some of the price are negociableUnimpressed

You should check the Star classifieds. I read it everyday and normally you can find home breeders, even those that come with certs for only RM800. I think I saw once, puppies from a champion shih tzu and was only RM800. You should check it out.

hihi...thanks for the reply...i don't know how much shih tzus normally cost but i met a home breeder today and she's selling for 850 with cert...and she has some rilly teeny tiny ones from taiwan for 950...the small ones are really tiny in comparison to others that i've seen....have u seen those before? the markings are nice and the nose rilly flat... would appreciate your reply...thx...

My advice, don't go for tiny ones. You will burden yourself with health problems. Shih Tzus aren't suppose to be tiny. They are small dogs but not small toy dogs. Shih tzus also cannot have a very flat nose. A short nose of about 1 inch is good. The shoter the nose, the more snoring and breathing problems. Also, small tiny puppies maybe premature, not fully developed. RM850 with cert is ok. You can still find homebreeders that only breed shih tzus and sell for about RM700 to RM800. Anyway, do look at other breeders. A good breeder will give you tips on which are good puppies and not tell you that they are Imperial shih tzus.

A tip, some actually will tell you Taiwan shih tzus are special and small and japanese shih tzus have a normal bite teeth. Please check for undershot teeth.

shes been calling me a lot saying someone else wants the puppies...and i haven't made up my mind yet...though i have to say hers are the prettiest i've seen so far... saw about 4 breeders already...

and she seems to know alot and feed me lotsa info and details....but based on what you say her puppies really fit the descriptions... oh well...hope i've made the right choice...

oh and she's been breeding for 5 generations (puppies) and guaranteed no in breeding...

Well, do choose wisely. If you still want her puppies, I sugest get the bigger puppies but look for all the shih tzu standards. Small pups, I also afraid to take coz they might have health problems later. My shih tzu was not a small puppy nor a big one. He was just the right size. When he was a younger dog, he had a healthy perfect weight of 6kg. Now he is 11 years old so his weight drop to 5kg.

No inbreeding, that is good. Do give her lots of questions, if the breeder can answer all without any hesitation on the breed, then I guess she may be a good breeder and you should go for it. What colour are they?

i'm so happy today!! went to pay her a deposit for my little puppy...i asked her plenty of questions and she didn't hesitate to answer me and was willing to show and tell me lotsa info... she gets really excited answering and telling about her pups too...

i'm getting her this weekend coz the breeder says my little puppy just got her jab so she doesn't want me to take her just yet... her adult dogs can do all sorts of funny and cute tricks like u go bang and they will pretend to drop dead...really cute!!

anyway my puppy is light brown and white...her brothers are tri colours...her markings are pretty nice and symmetrical... so i guess thats ok right...white spot on head and tails and mouth area... the nose isn't that flat as you said...she did say that they would have breathings difficulties too...

oh and her adults weigh about 5 kilos...and my puppy is the bigger one...Tongue

Ah... light brown and white, nice colour indeed. A pup with a star on the head, white tip tail... good markings. I'm so happy and excited for you. Seems you have found a good responsible breeder. Well done!

I love shih tzus, probably my favourite breed. So I'll be waiting for the pictures! I'm so excited heheheh....

but she seems so tired...maybe of all the yapping she did in the car...all she does now is sleep..

will go get her some toys this weekend... hope she's well...kinda worried about bout all the sleeping and whining....Unimpressed

this is the second day Coco is in my house...and she's still awfully quiet...

we think she has "yau wat ching"...coz last time so many puppies to play with her...

she hardly does anything but sleep and when we hold her she wiggles away...and she still pees

everywhere!!! do u think she's sick? her nose is still wet...helpppppp

Oh, some puppies feel stressed out so they will feel a bit down. Did she eat any food or drink any water? It'll take a few days for your Coco to adjust.

Yah, need to potty train. How I train my Willy ah... when he was a small pup, we always bring him to newspaper. You can take a bit of newspaper and soak a bit of her pee on it. Then everytime she wakes up or after a meal, place her on the newspaper and say a command like "pee" or "toilet". I use Aw Liew. Everytime she do on newspaper, make happy sounds and sayang her and play with her.

Still quiet ah? Have you brought her to the vet for a check up? Better bring coz it's important that all new puppies when bring home ah, better do a normal check up at the vet.

If eyes are clear, nose is wet and the gums and tongue are pink, she's ok.

oh she's still quiet but today she played with the ball i bought her...and she keeps chewing this old soft toy.... her nose and tongue all ok... today i took her back to the breeder to get her deworming medicine so maybe thats why she still quiet....but when she went back ah she was so happy and kept running around following the breeder.....so we have concluded really "yau wat ching" la....

giving her some time lor....she still peeing all over...pang sai also....maybe coz still young...only 6 weeks...maybe next month can buy her baju...Laugh

the breeder only took her to the vert on Monday and i took her on Thursday...i think her health should be a ok...

oh do u take ur puppy to the obedience training thingy here?

does it help her learn anything?

Ohhh... hahah... means she homesick only hehehe... aiyoh, so cute wan. I find the shih tzus love to chew anything soft like cloth. Mine like to chew on my old pair of shorts hahahah.... great thing is, when I say "where's your pupu?", my Willy will straight for the shorts and bite, chew and shake it.

Hah! 6 weeks only... no wonder she still pee and poo everywhere lah... learn slowly wan... some puppies can learn where to pee and poo in days... some take weeks...But basically is just constant reminders loh. I always take my Willy out every 3 hours when he was a puppy to see if he got pee or poo. Now ah, I just say "aw see" or "aw liew" ah, he will fun to the grass in the garden to do his business heheheh...

Nope, don't take my dogs to OB classes. I do them myself at home...

sorry sorry empty msg...anyway...today she's more energetic already....but at night la...day time she still wanna sleep a lot...and she pee on my bed lerrrrrr Mad

anyways i'm just glad got a bit of response la...bought her doggy treats also...then today gonna go get her a bed...she makes lotsa noise when she has to sleep outdoors at the balcony and she will climb back into the house.....hehehe....and she poos in here too...sigh...

now my priority is train her to pee/poo and to respond to her name...she doesn't seem to understand...my dad even thought she may be deaf...Tongue

Ah.. your puppy is young. It'll take some time for CoCo to know her name. Would you like to borrow a dog training book? I have a few, got pictures of how to train too.

Hahaha... sounds like she will be a good pup lah. The peeing and pooing is a bit of a challenge. Do you cage her? My Willy used to be taught to use the crate as punishment. My friend's dog uses the cage as a toilet hahahaha..... Oh Oh... shih tzus love to be with their owners at night. Mine sleeps in my room. You don't really need to buy doggy beds that are so expensive. They love the big soft human pillows heheheh... mine sleeps on my old sleeping pillow and he loves it.

Nah... won't be deaf. White puppies maybe deaf lah but rarely seen in shih tzus.

we have a cage but its not locked...her water bottle inside..so she comes in and out as she pleases...at night she usually moves into the house...

funny thing is she never pees in her cage..she would yelp a bit...come out and then pee outside...

Oh... you know why she doesn't dirty her cage? Heheheh... dogs rite, they have this instinct, which is they do not dirty their drinking, eating or sleeping place. They will dirty other places but those places. Some dogs have no choice so if locked up in the cage for long hours, they will pee and poo inside. As time goes by, it becomes a habit for them to pee and poo inside a cage. All this is mainly habit. Teach her a good habit and she will learn it for life!

ohhh...no wonder....today she seems more active but when ask her to come she jalan halfway then stop...hehehhe...very cute...then i gave her some treats and teach her to sit...dunno if she really learn it or coz she just want the makan....now afternoon she's sleeping again....

HAhah... cute rite? Training a puppy is all about patience and seeing them act all cute and innocent.

She'll be sleeping most of the time but ah, you'll realise that she's very playful during playtime.

Good to know your lil Coco so motivated with food hehehehe....

Yah, you can get the book off me during the weekend or around 9am on Thursdays and Fridays.

Today I found out my Willy has heart failure due to old age....sigh...

oh no...thats so sad..my friend's doggy also got heart disease...his name was popeye..the vet say he was too old liao...(10yrs) and ah seems like his heart got worms wor..he died already...but don't be sad...it happens...just sayang him more now lor...and feed him vitamins? what else did the vet say wor?

Well, the vet said his heart is a bit big now and cannot pump the blood properly, no worms but is just that his heart pumps the blood so hard and so irregular, it is making his body tired and his heart very weak. So now on some heart drugs to stablize his condition. Cannot cure but the vet said I can prolong his life maybe 2 more years.... Also have to feed him 100mg of Vitamin E everyday plus the heart drugs.

Sigh... I grew up with him.... feel like loosing a part of myself now.... but 11 years is long. I hope he still can go on for 2 more years.

Sadly... Willy is not with me anymore. He has left yesterday to join big doggy heaven. I miss him so so so much.... Sigh.... I now feel very empty without him.

u know today i accidently stepped on her feet...wahhhh she screamed...i felt so bad and my dad told me patah already...stressnyeeeeee

anyway she's ok now...just the poo and pee getting me crazy...

she bites when she comes onto my bed to sleep...think she wants to play....

then she will stop and cuddle then she comes again!!

she will also cry if i dont let her into the room and on the bed..(she pees there too)

oh do u know anything about maltese puppies? we're thinking about getting one...

and is it true we cannot rub shih tzu's head coz will stretch skin and get eye infection?

LOL, your Coco still young. You know, I find that if you let the pup stay in your room but not on the bed ah, they will learn to obey and respect you wan. If she cry, ignore her and if she make more cries, make your voice stern and say NO. Normally will work lah.

Yah... you getting a Maltese puppy? I do know a bit. What do you like to know?

Oh, you can rub the head all you want. Just don't rub till you pull back the head lah. Coz sometimes the skin around the eyes will stretch till eyes pop out. Sorry, don't want to shock you but it's true. Don't worry, rarely happens, never happened to me also and won't get infection.

yah yah i wanna get a maltese initially...my dad also quite like the breed but cannot find and pretty expensive...

how much does a maltese normally costs? boy or ger better?

and is it true they are smart...but hard to house train?

are malteses very clingy dogs?

Ah... Maltese ah... tell you lah, their character is almost the same as shih tzu. Both breeds are smart and intelligent but are stubborn, so training is a bit of a task. Shih tzus also clingy wan.

If you not looking for a pup with cert, I think I saw newspapers got some below rm800. But dunno can trust or is it good quality.

Oh, no wonder she so slow learn lah... your bf spoiling her hehehehe... Lol... don't let her sleep on the bed lah. When she knows where to pee and poo properly, reward her with a night on the bed heheheh.

Hmm... I am planning to get another pup. Feel lonely without a close companion with me in my room. Well, I'm not sure which breed yet coz I have asthma so the breeds that I can have are either another shih tzu, a maltese or a mini schnauzer.

Ah... yah, maybe getting it when you move to your new place is better. Well, it's luck if you get to find such a reasonable priced puppy.

Schnauzers come in 3 sizes. Standard Schnauzer, Mini Schnauzer and Giant Schnauzer. Mostly you can find the mini type here. They aren't noisy dogs if properly trained.

oh no...Coco's biting is getting crazy!!!

she keeps biting and chewing ppl's fingers and toes..she chases my maid around and bite her toes!!

scold cannot...beat also cannot...so stress and she's so noisy...my dad say wanna sell her off ge la...but when she's tired she's really sweet and cute...only know how to manja...

i swear u see her sure u shock how can a 7 week old puppy be this fierce..

arghsss its driving everyone in my house so mad...

the best solution is to scold and beat gently... no need to scold so fierce... you will be very happy that you have scold coco for those bad habits... my shih tzu used to bite fingers, grab cloths, bite carpets, etc...

Still biting ah? Hmmm.. try the beating and scolding. You have to consistant, do not yell and run or scream when she bites. If she bites, walk away from her and totally ignore her. Of, as I said before, use pepper, really works wan or vinegar... or try the anti chewing spray, taste and smells horrible to dogs wan. You can get from petshops.

Chilli sauce! First time I heard this hahaha.... anyway, dogs hate pepper and anything that to us taste sour and bitter. Of if you can find anything sour and bitter, just use it.

Get the spray, it really helps.

Some puppy repellant sprays are made from a herb, plant or bitter apples.
