Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

Dobermann

This is a breed of relatively recent origin. It was developed in Germany in the 1860's, presumably by crossing among German Pinschers with Rottweilers, Beauceron, Pinschers, Greyhounds and English Greyhound to create the sleek and highly intelligent Doberman. Normally this breed had been referred as devil's dog. But it won't look as devilish without its ears cropped. take a look at da difference....

Personally; i had a bad experience while i was just starting to walk. Its bite marks are still on my eyebrow. My father had to give him up..So here's the question. Which do u prefer? Dober with its ears cropped or not??

Re: [PlaTo] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

Definitely cropped as well as docked. It's so sad that docking and cropping has been banned in Germany. For the rest of Europe, the ban will start beginning 1st Jan 2006. The dobes with tails n uncropped ears look like hounds..Unsure Though today it's done for cosmetic purposes(for show) but for those in the working line, specifically protection work,it's still useful as threats will hv a hard time to grab onto the ears(for some..the military crop) or tails(a lil stub..) Also, they hv less of a chance of breaking their tails(same reason why spaniels and other breeds hv docked tails) as they are very active dogs.

I'm pro cropping and docking as long as it is done humanely(with GA and everything's sterilised)

Croping your dog's ear is really painful, but when it croped it face will look

nicer. Just like great dane and boxer. So I think croped ear dog is more

nicer than a didn't croped ear dog. And I think a croped ear have a smart

looking.Smile

Hi,

sew up the ears...? what do u mean by that..? Crazy

If I'm not mistaken, after croppping, the ears are bandaged up. Then u hv to return to the vet to re-dress it.Roughly abt 6 dressings.

What did ur vet say..?

That I'm not so sure. Best to ask your vet. And yes,u definitely hv to re-dress the wound n use a stand as a base so that the ears can stand.

Do a search in the forum as well as the net. You'll get alot of info.

Here's a lil smth..

lol...yeaps.Laugh

If u refuse to gv up,it can go on for years. Most of the time ppl stop when the ears fully mature, meaning when the dog fully matures as well...but there are the hard core ones..esp those who spend so much on a dog(maybe for show dog) n the ears don't stand...it's hard to gv up when u've gone that far Pirate

Re: [RealityDreamer] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

lucky I just crop 1 boxer. I have 3 boxers totally.

If I crop them at the same time, i think i will gila soon...where not time to jaga them???

You know? at the 1st week after cropped, i spend nearly 2 hrs to put back the stand when the stand jatuh due to lack of experience!!!Unsure More worst the stand jatuh few times in that weekPirate. 1 boxer oredi made me gila in the whole nite if stand jatuh. You can imaging how worst the situtaion if 3 boxers crop ears at the same timing and the stand always falling down.

Moreover, in the 1st week the blood easily come-up from wound if the stand jatuh, maybe nothing to support the ears & the ears shake here & there. I remember I called the Dr. at 11.00pm to seeking his help & advice because I worry the blood can't stop!!! Shocked

Since I have spend so many times on my Boxer, so i will never give-up & will ensure her ears stand-up well.Sly

Hi, sorry I miss your problem however just for your information and you may still cropping of ears for your two remaining boxers to check out the AKC Doberman webb pages they do have very good information on care for cropped ears. I have a Doberman, cropped ears and with photo illustration and all it was rather simple.

Try that and see, nothing like cropped ears for Boxers, Dobermans and Great Danes

Try http://dobermanpages.com/adtaping.htm or www.dpca-breedered.com/ears9-10.htm

Have fun but do remember if you decide to try another of your dog, please use normal plaster, normal gause bandage, masking tape, etc. Do not ever use non-stick to skin plaster and special bandage etc as it does more damage than good. Only use the cup to hold the ears up for the first fortnight after that use a bridge. I made a mess on dob but thanks to my girl friend she sorted it out for me.

Yes I do train them myself, well sort of but after saying all that I do have proffessional dog trainer to help me. I am using the electronic collar system. I have earlier enquired about this method and eventually found this system and is available locally. Did try to leave my e-mail on my reply but was not posted. Do think there is a problem here to get in touch.

Re: [RealityDreamer] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

Dear Reality Dreamer,

I can't help but noticing how graceful your dog looks in the picture with her ears cropped. I have a 7 month old Dobe and I am still indecisive whether to have his ear cropped. I am just wondering besides the aesthetic factor, what are the reasons (say health wise) for cropping Dobe's ears?

Re: [BLovers] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

hello Blover,

Thanks for the compliment Smile

As for the reasons..Back in the day, dobes were (and still are) working dogs. For protection,if they had hound ears, the bad guys could just pull on them(back them they had their ears cropped like pitbulls) and we know how senstivie their ears are... For tails, they would be so active cutting corners or running through obstacles tht they risk breaking them-thus docking the tails, reducing the risk (and cost of medicating a broken limb)

Re: [RealityDreamer] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

Thanks. But when is a good time to crop their ears? Mine is about 7 months, is he matured yet? I am still debating whether to do it or not. I mean, my Dobe looks adorable now, but he looks a bit lazy and sleepy, I wonder if cropping the ears will make him more alert and graceful just like yours.

i think only the vet (not the same one to crop the ears)can advice you on that

but in my opinion, its toooooo late to do it

Re: [BLovers] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

Hi, saw your posting, your dob is definitly too old to have his ears crop. It is best to get it done at 3 months and not over 4 months and not less than 3 months. Dew claws and tale should be docked at 3 days old. The tendon and what have you in the ear has already developed so getting it done now is likely to be disasterous.

Re: [BLovers] Dober - Ears Croped? or Not?

I agree with the others.

It is going to take alot of effort to get them standing and even then, there is very little chance of it being succesful..

Cropping wouldn't make him more alert but it would certainly give him an edgier look.
