Help! Beagle!!

My fren owns a adorable beagle.But his beagle is a naughty one where it like to bite things. This beagle had already bite my friend's father motorbike for several types until finally his father wanted to give away this beagle. This beagle is a one man dog which means it only hear the command from my fren(his owner). When my fren went out of his house to school, this beagle will turn evil. My fren really loves his lttle child. Could anyone please suggest what to to with this beagle?

how old is the beagle? i have a 4 months ++ beagle. and my beagle is very naughty and playful - loves to bite anything material. as i know that puppies are like that. once they reach adult age, they will cut all these down. you can either send him to ob training organized by puppy.com

learn to say NO whenever he try to bite things. when your friend is at school, maybe can put him in crate if he continue to bite. but this will be solved when training take place.

My beagle-lilo is 1 1/2 old (15 months) , until now, she still like to bite anything from my house, table, chair, shoes, newspaper... well... I really pusing kepala lar.. when I shout out her name, then she will left it and run away.. sometime she wont listen to me.. Crazy

i have a 3months + beagle also and she is very naughty as well..actually all beagle is naughty lar. what ur friend can do is, getting him some chew toys. whenever he bites things u do not want him to bite, scold him anf then immediately replace the toy for him to bite. this way he will know how to differentiate the things he can bite and the things he cannot bite. everytime he bites his chew toys, praise him, if he bite anything else, scold him. hope this will help. and this kind of training for beagles takes some time too you now. i have diff time training my beagle to down. he just dun want to lie down. haha..wel hopefully one day we can all meet and share our experiences. well i will start planning ok... Wink

Thank yous guys for your reply. My fren had try to tie him up when he is not around. But the beagle will bark and bark until the neighbour complain. Cool

My fren even punish him after his bite but he will soon forget about his punishment. I must admit that beagle is really really a smart dog compare to other dogs. Wink

I could see that the beagle sometimes will understand ppl suround it. It knows who loves him more, who dislikes him. He(the beagle) knows well. Anyway, according to my fren, he will fight for to keep his child against his dad.

beagle are kinda stubborn. so i think a heavy punishment is needed to punish them. Smile

sometimes you have to speak louder than the beagle so that he knows that you are his master. my beagle, everytime i say 'quiet', he would keep quiet. Smile

if u say a beagle is stubborn, a heavier punishment would make it worst. i personally dun believe in punishing my dog, well maybe a little pat on his butt sometimes. i have founf out that many dogs out there, are afraid of their owners more than fond of their owners. i have once encounter a schnauzer. his owner always whack him when he yaks...so everytime when a person raises his hands he will be afraid and run away. even his owner cannot make him come to him. the after effect is that the dog won't trust you anymore. the only thing he knows is i cannot bite shoes and bark, although he is a very good boy but he is doing it just for the sake of keeping away from ur rotan or ur slaps......punishment is a must but u must enforce it carefully. punishment such as avoid playing with him after he has done something wrong, feeding him less, or not letting him play with his favorite toy are great options. you might think all these things is little but it works. well this is just my way of treating my furkid.

thanks for advice. when i mean heavy means not so heavy lar, so heavy sure die ekeke. some people (like me) very sayang doggy and don't slap. but need to slap if doggy really bite people. Smile

henry always bite my aunt hand, and my aunt don't dare to slap, so i slap for her lor. pity my aunt, her hand all got tooth mark and red. Frown

The beagle already 2 years old. My fren bought him at age 1. So it is kind of late to train the beagle. Now my fren have decided build a compaund for his beagle.Hopefully his dad will not sell his beagle off after this. Laugh

i am an owner of two beagles....one almost 8 months and one just 3 months....i cant say i am very good in handling beagles but i can say some little tips do help other uninformed beagle owners out there. Like many beagle owners do realise, they are very naughty in their nature and can turn into a big nuisance sometimes. But from my experience i can share out a few tips with u guys how i managed to keep my beagle well behaved and build a good relationship with my beagle.

treat them like ur own kids.....communication is the key to it. U need to socialise ur beagle as easrly as possible ..that's the 1st rule....hopefully b4 he/she turns a year old. At a very early stage i started to train my beagle to go toilet and obey my commands. It wasnt easy at all but i managed to practise it with some degree of discipline there. I dont encourage ppl to use violence on their dogs but punishment is inevitable when u own a beagle. They are not shit tzu, they are not pugs, or pekingese or any other kind of timid dogs....they are super bold and almost fearless....so what u need to do is to make them fear u but not hate u !! alot of beagle owners out there especially the female owners usually fail to control their beagles nicely bcos they pamper them too much without a proper manner. That's a fine line between loving ur beagle blindly and loving them with discipline. Last time when i was training my beagle.......i just used these few ways and so far they bring good results and my beagles are not as naughty as before anymore.

So....let's get to the point:

1. correct ur beagle whenever he/she does something wrong....right on the spot.....hit their backs or their muzzle with adequate strength and follow that with a harsh scolding voice.......i dont think caging them after their mistakes really works as i dont think they will get it. You must beat their muzzle when they try to chew something....and then talk to them...holding up their face and dont let them run away and speak to them as though u are lecturing them.. this has to be practised all day long in all occurences.

2. male beagles are often the naughthier ones and they hardly listen to commands unless u have a treat. so start with using a treat to lure them to do whatever u want them to and slowly reduce the frequency of using a treat. when they respond to treats for a command then u must praise them exuberantly and dont forget to talk to them. it sounds funny but it works...it is to build a good bond between u and ur beagle. this way they will listen to u with respect and try to oblige u when the bond is getting deeper and deeper.

3. sometimes when things got out of control. do not hesitate to punish them with a tool. It can be a cane or anything they fear. do punish them right on the spot and scold them as harsh as u can but nv throw them back into their cage or ignore them for the rest of the day. imagine if ur children get these treatments they will resent u and become more and more rebellious. So the right thing to do is punish and show love right after. What i usually do is cane that naughty fella according to what they do wrong. If it's a serious offence i would just cane them straight away while sometimes i only hit the cane towards the ground to create a scaring effect. If u happpen to punish ur dog physically make sure u 'sayang' them back later on. This way they can feel that u really dont want them to do certain things and they know u punish them only bcos they disobeyed the rules and they readily know that if they stop doing it they will get lots of love....anyway....the caning shouldnt be applied to puppies less than 6 months as it could be too harsh for them. after 6 months their emotions have stabilised and it's Ok to communicate with them in this way.

All the above is my personal experience and they work well in my house with two beagles around......i am not saying that u must agree with my methods but i believe it will work a certain degree absolutely. Judge using ur own mentality and u can even innovate some new methods and share with other owners next time. Good luck in living with ur beagle. dont ever forget to spend some time to communicate with them...even if u do bring them to obedience training....doesnt any trainer keep asking u to talk to ur dogs as u train them??? that's what it's for........

well i am glad it worked for you, i would agree to some point that your way of training will work. Caning and hitting will definitely work well with training. Caging and neglecting them will work too you know. i once had a cocker spaniel in the USA and he was just as active and as naughty as my beagle. its hard to even train him. everytime i smack him on the back, he will sure growl and want to bite me. so i went and consult with a local trainer and he told me that beating your pup won;t do any good in training. like you said, you will whack him first then only sayang him back. by doing that they will get mixed feeling towards you like wah you hit me and then pat me back for wat. are you angry or are u happy ler...And when i said cage them back into their cage not for one day lar....for me if my pup makes mistake or bite forbidden things, i will scold them then talk to them too...like "so naughty dun let you play" thenn place him back into the cage. then of course he will whine and bark lar...i will just do my own things and neglect him. then later only i go back and bring him out. well it worked for me. then everytime he does somthing wrong unintentionally, like maybe i was asleep and he wants to go pee, nobody open the door for him, he will be in the cage when i wake up cause he knows he has done something wrong. Ohmybeagle, i am not arguing with you about your training style, i am just sharing my thought as i have really encountered dogs that are scared of their owner because of beating. well try both ways la if can ...hahaha

Thanks for the advice. My fren does discipline his beagle. But the problem is whenever my fren is out to study, he will began to become 'king' in the house. Going wild and naughty.When my fren is around the house, he is very good dog. And also, the beagle only fear my fren alone. Only my fren's command he will follow. That's why it is kind of difficult to control that beagle when my fren is not around.

actually it's really hard to keep beagle in the house la to tell u honestly. they are not a house dog in their nature. They need alot of space and freedom. They are hound dogs. If ur friend had studied about the breed then mayb he wouldnt get a beagle just becos they look cute la. IF ur friend wants a house dog should be something like chi hua hua or shit hzu la.....so it's kinda hard to stop the beagle from tearing down the house when ur friend goes work. They are super curious and want to try out with anything.....so that leads to chewing and destroying when they do not get attention when there is no one to play with them when ur friend work. The only thing ur friend can do is to safeguard him in a cage when he goes to work and make sure he put the cage somewhere that the beagle cant see anyone so that he cannot bark for a complaint for no freedom...haha...i suggest that he better dont ley the beagle roam around in the house cos no matter how well u discipline a beagle they are mischievious forever and they are almost fearless and wont give in to your friend eventhough the dog listens to his command. He will still do the damage when ur friend is not there to scold him.....it's simply their nature and almost impossible to change.

My fren never let his beagle in his house. Although the beagle stay outside the garden, he also manage to destroy a lot of things. He bite my fren's father motorbike seat till a big hole on the seat. He once before bite my fren's sister car plate. All this naughty thigs is done when my fren is not around.

My beagle- Coco is 9mths now. She's like any other beagle too - hyperactive and playful too. Whenever she bite furniture or other things, I'll rotan her kuat kuat. She even likes to pee on my comforter previously, but now after all the spanking, she cut tat out.

Beagle need lots of time and patient to train. Especially that they love to sniff and bite things. Once they bite on that thing, do spank them at once and tell them not to do that. If not, they won't know why r u spanking them for.!!

Like Coco, if I came back from work and saw cushion on the floor, then she'll run and hide from me cos' she knew that m gonna spank her for biting the cushion. They know tat they r not allowed to bite on things but they just wanted our attn.

Once I also pusing kepala lar... Now better oredy!!! At least coco listen to my command..
