Re: [strawhoney] golden and 'mudbath'

hi,

when hunter was 5 months old, he had this hobby of digging holes in our beautiful garden covered with carpet glass. first, it'll be at a size of a golf hole. and he'll sit next to it, smiling. (and we think it's really cute)

couple of days later, he dug it even bigger and deeper, and sat right on the hole, smiling (yes, it fits him perfectly). of course, we covered the hole with sand.

it was raining the day he dug his REALLY big hole (we weren't in). when we came back, our fairly light brown golden became a US version of golden (dark mahogany brown) - four paws dark brown, head dark brown, body dark brown. he must've rubbed his entire body at the hole or something. and he was really happy being covered in mud. running wildly in circles.

people say goldens love digging holes. i guess it's because they love mud in the first place, that's why they became hole diggers.

maybe its not just goldens but Gundogs in general that like hole digging. Or maybe brinkley dug the hole and let luckey lie in it so she gets the blame Tongue

"brinkley dug the hole and let luckey lie in it so she gets the blame"Sly

Mack luv to dig holes and sit on (in?) it too.
But had no chance by now to try MUDbath.... I think he prefer SNOWbathing.... almost the same way as you all decribed in MUD.Tongue

But Max (my dog back home) used to get himself wet in the longkang, shallow one at home, with fourlegs straight, with swimming movement, until all wet and dirty! YAK~! Then dunno should cry or laugh to see him "he..he..heh.." laughing at me. Kek-sei~Mad

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

I guess in general, goldens are not that hygienic..compared to other dogs...Unsure

I know dogs are prone to digging..sometimes to hide their food...sometimes when they are too bored...BUT the look (the one i saw) when he was 'mudbathing',it just grosses me out...PirateLuckily I've never seen Odie in mud before....yuckkk.....but once he ate some horse poo poo when we were frolicking at the beach..it was so very disgusting!!He ate it as if that was a steak!!gosh!!!And when we bring him to the beach,he digs and digs and digs....and his whole body is usually covered with sand...

Yeah, that's what I heard about Goldie...they love mud....haha,maybe they think they get better coat by that...facial mask...Slyhehe...

mack2,

hey where are ya living at? gee... i really hope my dog get's to snow bathe one day... what will it be like? anyway, if i get to choose, i rather want him to snowbathe - it's cleaner anyway :P

do goldens like icy cold weathers? or they just curl up and sleep by the fire?

aiyaaaa..... longkang? he sure know how to choose a good spot LOL

ps : the dog in the photo looks really handsome (what's his name). how'd u groom him so well? i mean, the fur is all neat - straight and long... my dog's fur is curly no matter how i comb him - especially the part at his backside...perhaps i'm combing with wrong techniques.

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

Hi~ "Hunter"!Smile

I put down quite a lot about myself and my golden, Mack, in Members Introduction session under the thread of "Super Dog Lover". Feel free to stop by there~Wink

I saw Hunter in one of the party picsWink

I am now in US. I just sent Mack back to M'sia on 3Jan. Before that, we were in Michigan, the pic attached to my posts was taken during december 02. STRAIGHT hair??Wink yes, brush him quite often, but the one u saw from the pic was actually due to strong wind blow~ it was below 10F, chilly and windy, until Mack's hair were all in ONE DIRECTION.
But most of the time, I will make sure he looks NEAT and CLEAN geh.....
About the curly spot at his backside, Hahahhah....same for Mack ler.... i prefer a bit curly... more "yook-shu-lam-foong"SlySlySly

and YES, golden LOVES snow!!! not only that, they loves summer too as it will be their hunting/swimming time! Basically, as being a hunting dog, golden could adapt to anykind of environment and weather easily.

Mack in now in KL. Adjusting himself to the HOT weather. pretty much done with his shedding..... gain back some appetite, no more "lau-sai" (due to stomach discomfort).....

Crossing my fingers.... hope MACK won't gain this habit of MUD bathing.Unsure

hahaa... curly hair makes my dog look messy.. (i dun think it's yook shu lam fong lo). especially after baths. he looks so... curly.

wow! really! they love snow? i can't imagine that! so u really take ur mack mack for hunting games? izzit the duck retrieving stuffs? this is so interesting! somemore, your dog looks gorgeous. have he won in trials before huh...???

LOL, yeah. just hope our dogs don't go into mud bathing interest. u better worry about your dog's longkang swimming hobby too :D:D:D

we have yet brought odie to snowbath...ah...that's so nice...at least better than 'MUDBATH'...Cool but according to odie's grandpa and grandma, (they brought him to a place with snow),he really liked playing with snow...I guess snow is definitely a 'YES' for goldie...Smile

we brought him to a beach nearby (that's where he ate poo poo) and he din dare to get into the water...until we left him alone...he joined us but still afraid of the water....like it's poisonous or something...I think it's really weird for a golden to hate playing with water...I mean they love to swim, don't they?

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

Cool

Hunter,
Mack has most curly hair at his back, back right at the middle of his back, the hair is FLAT, why?? coz he sleeps with all four-legs pointing upwards in the airTongue that makes his back all flat and the hair coming out to the sides are curly. (can imagine?Wink)

He loves snow, he usually jump into snow pile like "diving", and "swim and swim"..... until who face and body covered by snow. Then look back at me and smileSmile
as for the "longkang swimming", mack didn't pratise it, it was my another dog back home called MAX, he is 11 yr-old now, a pitbull & mastiff mix. He did all these naughty things while he was still a pup, and taught my another pup when Max get older. (old storiesTongue)

but he never try hunting. he likes jungle tracking but scared of guns....so i guess he won't be a good hunting dog. and Thanks for your compliments, but never been to any show or competition.
Have you seen Mack's pics over at the gallery session? Mind to share some pics of hunter with us?

But sometimes nightmares too, like DROWNING ,
then i'll shake him and shout "mummy help! mummy help!", but he would wake up and look at me with the face of "dun kakacuacau~"Crazy

I can imagine how hunter walks with head up, coz mack too! especially when i walk him out and meet neighbours, he will "show off" to neighbors and their dogs, like his owner is walking him, and he knows a lot of commands and bahave well. When my neighbors praised him, he'll SHOW a lot of TRICKS~ i think just to please others gua.....

mine does. sometimes. the first time i heard, was when i was doing my assignment 3am in the mornin' in my room - he was sleeping under the desk i'm working....

then all of a sudden.. there's this... snore... like a man's snore - deeeep NGRRROOOOOoooo...... i was like, who was that!!!???? then noticed - it's my dog snoring :D

luckey : you're the first person who thinks that my dog is graceful LOL... normally people would say he walks like a woman (does brinkley does that?) the only thing about hunter is that he's small size for a male golden. the vet said he's the "small" type. but that's okay i love him anyway :D !

i like hunter's size for a golden... i think coz he is not so big-boned, thats why he looks so elegant and fit. He's like a working golden in shape (lean) but nice long fur and very blonde like the show dogs huh? youre so lucky ... but then again you also work hard to give him the best and to train him!

Dunno about brinkley walking like a woman (well, she IS a female dog)... but I know Luckey takes after her mum, she wiggles her bum when she walks! Laugh

i must say.. his size is... convenient? it's good that he doesn't look too big and bulky. just the right size for me (if he gets any bigger i can't control him, i'm already having problems pulling him back now)..

show dogs? i wouldn't go that far.. though i hope to. was hoping to take him to dog shows, just hoping. but it seems my dog is waaaaaay different from those competing in shows (big body, long hair - close to perfection). rather dissapointing.

LOL my dog wiggles his bum too. and his wiggling made him look so ladylike - end up being mistaken as a girl doggie :D

yeah she still looks pretty much the same as when we first got her,... but her legs are now longer and she's grown bigger than Luckey... and she has that mark going across her face... the vet says that's the way her hair grows, its like a birthmark, but more promininent now than when she was younger.

The only thing is she is also looking thinner than before... don't know if its coz she is "shooting up" getting taller and longer so not so round, but she def. doesnt look chubby like puppies usually do. We thought it might be worms, but we just got her dewormed recently. Any ideas?

Re: [luckey] golden and 'mudbath'

ohhh... no wonder there's a mark. isn't quite noticable though. never mind anyway, she's still a cute little angel :D

have u added her food amount? if she has grown you might have to increase her food amount.

i feed hunter 1 cup for one meal (2 meals per day) when he was 4 months... but after some time, his stomach kept growling, so i increased it to 1 1/2 cups one meal (also 2 meals per day) - he was growing really fast during that time period.

brinkley looks okay to me.. when i first got hunter, he was 4 months old.. the puppy photo of hunter i posted on the gallery is taken when he was 4 months plus. my dog looks almost similar with brinkley, only bigger and taller (maybe because he's a male dog)

if she is eating and sleeping well, perhaps there's not much to worry about... at 4 months the growing process is much faster.. maybe she's growing, growing and growing :)

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

At the moment Brinkley eats 3 meals a day, but at suppertime (midnight, coz we are usually still awake) she will find her way downstairs to look for food to see if there is any leftover and eat that. She eats about 3 cans of canned food a day and dog kibble to go with that too,... so it seems like enough, coz she doesnt neccessariyl finish her food at all meals, but we thought we'd better feed her the amount recommended for a dog her age.

But then she gets hungry again quite quickly. I guess thats why they say puppies need to eat more often. Hope she grows! Smile

But she is beginning to realize that she's bigger than luckey, and sometimes gets on top of luckey when she is sick of luckey stealing her chewbones, and just holds her down with a paw, and when luckey tries to nibble her ear to tell her off, she just lifts her head and luckey can't reach!

3 cans of canned food? sounds enough for a dog her age... since she's getting hungry at midnight, have u considered feeding her more? normally the feeding amount is based on the puppy's weight.. that's what my vet suggested me to do (to feed him a little more), when i found my dog's stomach growling so loudly in afternoon and midnight.

luckey,

my dog always doesn't finish his food (although he's REALLY hungry). when i place the food bowl, he will go in his doghouse, sit down (like meditating). he would only eat if either me or my mom is there.

my vet always say, if they don't finish their food (say within 10 or 15 minutes).. just pour them away. soon they'll get the message and finish up the food quickly during mealtimes(then ur dog won't be hungry at night hopefully).

i think goldens are manja doggies. when u place the food bowl. they sit faaaar away, waiting for u to "invite".. then slowly walk and eat like a king LOL

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

Ya~!

I thought it's just a weird habit of Mack only?!

When I first brought mack home, he used to have me, or at least someone besides him during his meal time. I purposedly "trained him" so coz I don't want him to bite/bark on others who get close to him when i'm not around, or when my sister's kids get close to him. Soon, it became his habit.
Mack used to have someone besides him to dote him, I have to say "finish mum-mum" then only he'll eat... if i walk away, he sure will walk away from his bowl and try to get attention from me...
and he used to have a vitamin tablet before his meal. and need to shake hands before he take the tablets. So everytime, he has to "come", "sit", "hand-hand", "vitamin", then "finish the mum-mum" (n times)Smile

Actually Mack loves to take the vitamin!Wink
wonder how it taste like.....

even when he has no appetite to take his kibbles, he still want to have the vitamin.

As what i've mentioned, they are not a long process, mack will do it "continuos" at once. it just like a MUST DO steps for him,(not for meTongue). He'll do them automatically one...like that's how he could get the vitamin.

Quite similar to your case, I give multi-vitamins.. but only after the dinner. Like wise, it's retraining cum "re-enforcement" time for him.. Smile. else he won't get to eat them. Poor Rex.. Laugh

Smile

CD Moo

Re: [cdmoo] golden and 'mudbath'

Harlow his behaviour came back when he was staying with us lol....i had to stand beside him for him to eat his food and i also gave him the 'finish your food' command otherwise if i left him and go check on Biscuit and his food Rex will whine at the door and vice versa for Biscuit.

Re: [cdmoo] golden and 'mudbath'

Good Idea~ let him finish his food first then only get the vitamin as "reward".

But I know... mack always insisted to get the vitamin first, else, he'll kinda show you the face of "okie...then i dun take the foodUnimpressed"

Re: [luckey] golden and 'mudbath'

Hahahahahh~~~~Laugh

Luckey must be complaining how come mama never find out the reason behind UNTIL NOW?Crazy

So, did you up-lift his bowl? when mack was still a lil pup, i didn't up-lift his bowl and just feed him on the floor... until his 4-legs spread outwards and his stomach touched the floor.... but he will re-adjust everytime. So cute~! (this only happened the first few days i brought him home)

Re: [mackmack] golden and 'mudbath'

usually when we feed odie,we put kibbles in his bowl...and besides kibbles,we also have some additional 'side dishes' for him...we only add some of the 'side dishes' (like steamed chicken breast meat, fried egg...etc)...goldies are really smart..they know that they still have some 'more delicious' food left for them....Crazy odie won't finish his kibbles...after he eats up all the sides and with some kibbles left,he most certainly gives us this innocent look..sorta like "give me those if you wan me to eat it all"......Mad it angers me sometimes on how picky they are when eating their food but most of the time,it's just hilarious and he tickles me when he stares at me and I insist on him eating all his kibbles without those sides...hehe..he's cute but too bad,I'm too devilish!!

my bf's mom,she peels apples and oranges for odie...when i first saw that,I was like struck by lightning...too shocking....she even takes out the bad part of the oranges (like seeds, those white part covering the orange flesh)...I've never seen that before!!!...now it makes me wanna ask you guys, what are the most outrageous things you guys ever done for your doggie?hehe...Tongueand addtional, each time odie goes pee pee,(san fran is very foggy)he gets wet from the fog..his mom wud use a cloth and wipe his whole body...omigod...even if odie was a kid,I think it was too much!!!Slyand odie wears clothes too when it's cold!!!!haha..each time i see that,I know odie's not comfy and wanna tear that immediately....hehe...

Re: [hunter] golden and 'mudbath'

she sits there like a queen and waits for me to put the spoon by her mouth before opening it and eating... then she gets a bit sick of me feeding her so slowly, so she then gets up (after about 5 mounthfuls) to stand over the bowl, where i continue to feed her with the spoon but faster... hehe Laugh

Re: [strawhoney] golden and 'mudbath'

luckey's gotten quite good at eating off a spoon... she's quite a distinguished lil doggy... don't like to get her fur dirty or wet. SHe opens her mouth, i put the spoon by her mouth and she closes it over the spoon, takes the food and opens her mouth again. the spoon is licked clean and no spilling either!
