Re: [meiyoong] Naughty Beagle!

Hi...

I wouldn't say that his behaviour is evil.. Just a little bit destructive... Tongue

Hmmmm... Punishment wouldn't work for the dog as they may not understand what they have done wrong. Best is to say "Hait" or "No" in a low growly voice to let them know that they are not doing something right.

It is also important to catch them in the act, so that you can discourage that behaviour. After telling "hait" or "no", move them away from the object and give them something else to do. If the dog observes the "hait" or "no", remember to praise him.

Is the beagle bored at home? They could be very curious of their surroundings but must be taught what they can and cannot do, i.e. rules of the house.

Anyway, a lot of people have used this trick, where they dilute vinegar with water and sprayed in on the objects that he likes to bite. This will work in tandem with teaching the dog NOT to bite the objects.

Hmmmm.... Hope this helps...

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

I don't thin the beagle is bored coz my friend's house compound is quite big for him. Moreover in the morning the beagle will be tied while at night the beagle will be let off. That's why most of the naughty act is done during at night where my friend and his family members are not aware of it.

Re: [meiyoong] Naughty Beagle!

Hmmmm...

How long will the dog be tied up for? I'd guess your friend had better train him first so that at night you won't get such a problem.... That's why if the beagle does those things at night and your friend punishes him in the morning, he won't understand why you punish him for because the act has already been done.

Having a wide compound is great but if the dog doesn't have something to do at night besides roaming around, it'll amuse themselves this way.

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Sometimes my friend caught the beagle in the act and scolded it immediately but the beagle so stubborn and repeat it again. Another thing is the beagle seems like lots of energy and would not get tired. He seems like hyperactive. The beagle I see other beagle also not like that. Morever my friend also doesn't have time to train his dog.

Re: [meiyoong] Naughty Beagle!

Hmmmm...

Beagles have a lot of energy and they need loads of exercise. Best to take the beagle out for walks if possible... Unimpressed

As for training, you can always make a little bit of time for training. It doesn't have to be an hour long, it can be as short as 20minutes per day. Smile Anyway, it is best to put in some time for training, even when you don't have much time. I don't have time to take Snoopy for obedience school, but I do allocate at least 20 mins a day to train her. However, I have to admit, during the 1st 2 mths with her was hard because we have to take care of such a small pup...

Sad to say, no quick fixes here, to modify this behaviour, you have to divert his energy to something else to do. An intermediate solution is probably to restrict his area but that is hard for a beagle.. Tongue

Re: [meiyoong] Naughty Beagle!

Hi Meiyoong, that Beagle isn't evil unless my 2 are as well. I guess, part of being a Beagle is being energetic and willful. I walk my puppies about 3 km everyday and sometimes they still have the strength to trash around at home. They will behave themselves in my presence but everything is fair game when I am not with them. They chew - anything and everything. So either you keep your Beagles with you or you have to keep chewables away from them. Good luck to your friend and his Beagle, J

Hi!! All,

Well, I got a 2 mths old beagle girl. Taking a female, thought that it's easier to train her. She is hyperactive like meiyoong said and very notty too. But she really picked up fast. She now knows how to sit when ordered to/or without. Normally, I will praise her and sometime give her treats..

Her mouth is so itchy. She would bite anything, including us... OUCH!! Been teaching and giving her toys to chew but she still prefer to bite us.. Why!! I know it's the teething problem but how long do we need to face this???PirateCrazy

Jz hope that she would stop all this when she's getting older.. How did u teach ur snoopy?

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

Greetings!!!

Hehehehee.. 2mths old Beagle. She must be a cutie!! TongueTongue

Hmmm.. Mouthing happens a lot during the teething period and that can last from 2-6mths? Anyway, here is a tip to train,

1. When she bites, scream "Ow!!" Then she'll know when she bites, there is pain coming from the human... LaughLaugh

2. Substitute your hand with a toy, esp when she tries to mouth/bite for the 1st time...

Anyway, Snoopy does mouth from time to time esp when I try to pick up her paw. Its a reflex action and to rectify it, I'm teaching her hand and she is getting it... TongueTongue

Be patient... It'll be cute when you see her little teeth drop out... LaughLaugh

I read somewhere that ice-cube (half-water, half-broth) is yummy for a dog.. Hehee.. have yet to try that...

good luck then!!

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

Hi there..

Kekeke... TongueTongueTongueTongue...

I think training Beagles is the same with training JRTs. You need to be a little bit more persistent with their training. Not that they are not smart. They understand us, but are willful because that is how their breed is like. They will need to be independent when they are out hunting... Smile

Hehe.. Toilet training for Snoopy is easy because she was trained by her Mom to do the business outside the cage/house. Sly Anyway, these days, she still does have some "accidents" and we scold her and she feels guilty for it. When she goes out for business, we praise her like mad. She's a grass-only gal and so, no problems for us there, except for the small accidents.

We tried to newspaper train her but that didn't quite work because she shred the newspaper.. CrazyCrazy

Anyway, good luck. Keep persisting with the training...

She knows where to do her biz in the toilet but like u said accidents do happend. But too many times this accident could not be acceptable, sooner or later it would be like normal to do biz every where.. PirateUnsureUnimpressed

Sorry that i have to be "rude" here to tell you/your friend...... he deserve it!
hmmm....
should not tie dogs up.
should not "raise his hands" on dogs.
last but not least,
don't blaim the DOG.
there's always a reason behind all the behavioral problem.
what i can tell from your description of the dog as well as the owner,
he/she doesn't really know much about the dog, regardless of its breed.

well~
a GOOD thing is....
he brought up the behavior issue to you and willing to share,
so,
it's not too late to correct the OWNER'S Behaviour interms of raising & training a pup.Smile

so...
ur fren "took over" the responsibility from another person?

what to do....? Mmm.... training is a must. Need not be "robotic training" but at least some basic commands are needed. the KEY is, CONSISTENCY.
for eg,
SIT is SIT always....
dun confuse the dog by using sit-down, down-down, chor-chor.....

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

**Phew**....

Thank goodness Coco is ok now... Smile Hmmm... Do you find it hard to medicate Coco? I usually have to hide the medicine in something to give to Snoopy... CrazyCrazy My previous dog Oofy was quite good. She will eat anything that you put on your palm, including medicine!!!

Hmmmm... How old is Coco again? I think she's at that teething stage. Better teach her that biting is No-No!!! Have to be firm with her.... Mad Try to substitute yourself with some other toy. I'd guess she could also be a bit curious about the surroundings... So, be patient with her...

Hmmm... Did this start after she came back from the hospital? Dogs will bite because they want to defend themselves but if she is play-biting, then, it could be because she's teeting and thinks that that behaviour is acceptable...

Anyway, I suffered for 2 mths straight because Snoopy like to bite me. But after a lot of work by giving her toys and teaching her that biting is not acceptable, she gets it. Sometimes, there is an accidental bite but she knows that she has done some wrong.

Be patient.... Good luck! Tongue

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

Hmmmm...

Yea.... Hang in there... UnsureUnsure They'll test your patience. I'd guess better look up some websites or books or even some of the threads to check out "teething"... CrazyCrazy

I was bitten so many times by Snoopy during those months. After I've learnt that she was teething, I decided to substitute my hand with a toy and teach her "hait". She will bite if she feels threatened and I've learned to read her behaviour. UnsureUnsure

Don't worry, she'll grow out of her teething. But, I think it is time to teach her some obedience basics. A pup is never too young to start.

Snoopy's mom (also named Coco) was tough on her kids. She taught them not to play too rough and according to dmax, the pups were disciplined by their mom... ShockedShocked Kekeke... I wasn't too surprised. This has something to do with pack hierachy. So, you, as the ALPHA dog in Coco's pack have to set what are the limits of her behaviour.

Hope that this piece of advice helps. If I compare between JRT and Beagles, generally I think Beagles are easier to train... Tongue

Look at this as a challenge... Not a stumbling block. I've got countless people telling me that the JRT is destructive and stubborn like hell but that's because they're independent & highly intelligent. SmileSmile

Good luck!!

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

Hey...

I just found this from a JRT website... Tongue Hope this helps....

Q: We're having difficulty with our puppy. He's been nipping and biting and we don't know how to stop it. Can you help?

A: Nipping and biting is how a puppy explores it's world and learns it's boundaries. When you allow a puppy to nip or bite at you, or your clothes, without an appropriate correction or consequences, you are actually teaching this youngster that it is acceptable behavior. Not a good idea in the long run!

Time outs are great, they really teach the puppy that if they can't play nicely, they can't play at all! When I have puppies that bite I have found two types of corrections that work well for me. I don't recommend hitting a puppy or holding a puppy's mouth closed for biting, rather, putting your hand OVER their muzzle and just pushing her lips into the teeth, if they exert pressure downward, they only end up biting themselves. This does two things: it gives them a correction, and simulates another dog putting it's mouth over their muzzle. This mimics a common sign of dominance among canines, allowing you to reemphasize your dominance over them! I also will use a little pinch on the lip as a correction. With both corrections, I give a verbal correction "No bite" and when they stop, I praise them. With perseverance and patience, you will eventually be able to give only a verbal correction and have them stop. With puppies, it is often a good idea to quickly distract them with an appropriate chew toy so they don't go right back to "finger attack" mode!

If the corrections don't seem to work, then give time out, because they are either too wound up or too tired and need a nap! It might seem endless, but keep up the corrections you need to win this battle! Be persistent and they'll soon learn that nipping isn't such a fun game after all!

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hi, sounds like Snoopy has got attitude - that is nice, dont kill it, hahaha easy to say. My 2 rascals are coming along fine. They know not to mess with me, at least directly, hahaha. The understanding and trust has been established after 5 months. So walking, bathing and nail cutting, from struggles have turned quite easy. Initial barking for attention has also been phased out. Paper training is quite succesful for peeing but pooping is still free style and they wont leave their poop alone. At 8 months old I observed their duty calls when they wake up and at 8 hour intervals. That doesnt click with their early waking when it is still all dark outside and our twice a day walks 10 hours apart. But I figure that should sort itself out as they grow towards a year old. I really hope so, phew. Best regards,J

Hi there....!!!

Hehee... You are right, more patience is needed!! However, do spot the symptoms for aggressiveness early as you want to prevent this problem from getting any worse... Crazy

I don't believe that Beagles or JRTs are hard to train. Sometimes, it is just the personality of the dog.. TongueTongue There is a general consensus that the JRT likes to challenge their owner's authority and a lot of breeders say that. This is because the JRT was bred to be an independent little dog and they don't take instructions well... Tongue

Anyway, good luck. This is a learning process for you and Coco.. Sly

Anyway, hope to meet up with you & your furkid one day!!!

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hi, I guess it must be a compliment to be included as one of the pack especially as alpha, hahahaha. Time really flies - half a year has passed since I brought back these 2 furballs. And then got so busy with them that I didn't even get to take any photos of them at their cutest. Now they are at adult size, Wow. I am sure we will bump into each other at the next puppy.com gathering. Best regards,J

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hello there...

I guessed so. I think before they are down and out, we are the one who's down and out first... Challenging to train an independent doggy. They seems to only listen to their own n nvr like to take instructions at all. But mz tame them lar...Crazy

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

Hehe...

I try to make it a point to snap some photos of Snoopy every month... TongueTongueTongue Anyway, now that I've got a camera phone, its so much easier!!

Kekeke.... They look really cute and innocent here. I compared the 1st photo of Snoopy which I took and her photos now, and I can see the "notti-ness" grow in her... LaughLaughLaugh

Can't wait for her 1st b'day.

Re: [Concorn] Naughty Beagle!

Hahaa....

There is the saying, is the doggy training you or you train the dog?? TongueTongueTongue

Sometimes, it is hard but when they do perform for you, you'll be so happy and joyful. It was hard for me to teach Snoopy to stay, but when she got it, I was glad that she can understand the command because it means that we are communicating in human language. Wink

Don't stress yourself out too much over it. Take it as a hobby or activity. Try to find what motivates Coco and am sure that all training should be easier then... Wink E.g. Snoopy is a "hungry ghost" and so, will always do anything for food. Like last night, I didn't even give the command "roll over" but I just used it in a sentence and she actually did it!! LaughLaughLaugh My family laughed at her...

Anyway, the pic of Coco is great!! She looks like an elegant, young lady... WinkWink

Take care!!

LaughLaughLaugh..

It hit a big hole in my pocket... But I'd guess sometimes, in my line of work, I've got to keep up with the times... Or else, malu to meet the big telcos since I'm working closely with them... BlushBlush

Anyway, I like the camera feature the best because I can carry video/pic of my dog anytime!!! Laugh

Hahaha... I'm worried that Snoopy is not growing so much... Kekekeke... We wish that she would grow just a little bit more before stopping.. LaughLaughLaugh

LaughLaugh....

Kekeke.. I've got the same problem with you. Snoopy moves around a lot when I want to take pictures of her. However, the pic in your avatar shows that Coco is a very elegant gal... Wink

Anyway, beagles love to run a lot... Good exercise for all of us. Snoopy loves to run too... Kekeke... Really love to see her run!! Wink

So, how is training coming along?

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hi, I also need a good reason to upgrade, hehehhe. But the old one is still working well despite my dropping it around.

Last night I went to collect my 2 puppies' MKA cert from the breeder. Saw their daddy Kommando and he's got the cool champion temperament. My daughters said he looks like Sparky but more square looking. I guess my 2 rascals are lanky and could put on a few pounds, just like your Snoopy. Best regards,J

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

LaughLaughLaugh... Kekeke... The 3210 is a strong phone... Anyway, when the 3210 was being sold, that was the 1st time I heard that the phone could run out of stock because it was so popular...

TongueTongueTongue... Wow.... Hmmm.. Snoopy has no cert because her parents had no cert. Anyway, that doesn't matter to me unless I want to show her... Kekeke.. But I doubt so, because this monyet of mine cannot sit still!! TongueTongue

Kekekeke.. I think once our pups hit puberty, would their appetite increase like us humans when we hit puberty??!! SlySly

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

hi, actually I asked myself what I needed the certs for. I felt lazy so had half a mind to just forget about them. After all, Picnic is spayed and I am only keeping the doggies as pets without much interest in shows. In the end I just did it for completeness.

Arent the rascals already at puberty? My puppies are 8months old so should be maturing about now. I wouldnt know if their appetites improve cos they always behave so hungry. I just feed them according to their weight and adjust according to their look. My guideline is can see the waist but cannot see the ribs. Best regards,J

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

Wink... I think that's valid....

Hahaha... That's true. At first, I didn't know the signs of puberty until my other dog had her 1st period!! Shocked She was all depressed and tired. We thought she must be sick but later, we found out that she had her period... TongueTongue

Anyway, I noticed that my other dog jumped on us alot. So, we realized that she was hitting puberty... Her fur changed colour as well.. Wink

Oh well.. That's a good rule of thumb, to see the waist but not the ribs... WinkWink Feed according to weight and look... Laugh

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hi, past few days I have observed that Picnic is sleeping a lot. Sometimes the whole morning and half the afternoon. But she is still active during walks and otherwise healthy. Do you know whether spayed bitches show any signs of having periods? Picnic is 8 months now. I spayed her at 6 months to avoid any accidents. At that time all I wanted to know from the vet was she wont get pregnant. Now, I am wondering whether she will be a child forever or just cannot get pregnant. Best regards,J

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

Hi there...

Hmmmm... Is it due to the hot weather we've been having? Snoopy is usually quite active but now, when the weather is hot, she prefers to sleep during the day and play during the night... My mom calls her a "GRO" (Guest Relations Officer)... Tongue

Did you spay Picnic before she had her 1st period? Shocked Hmmm... I've read in some books that it is advisable to spay after the 1st period... Anyway, I think she will still grow until she reaches her maximum adult size but after you've spayed her, I don't think she can get pregnant... Tongue

Just wondering, are you planning to neuter Sparky?

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

Hi ...

There is a school of thought that believes ... if you desex a dog too early ... then the dog's maturity level/growth may be affected ... Although effects of early desexing is usually more evident in male dogs ...

But dogs sleep a lot anyways ... *laughs* ... so as long as Picnic is active & healthy otherwise ... should be nothing to worry about ...

Cheers Smile

Re: [surchinmy] Naughty Beagle!

Hi Surchinmy, yes dogs sleep a lot anyway. I was just wondering cos lately Picnic continues sleeping while Sparky is awake pacing their living area. I guess you are right, probably nothing to be concerned about. Thanks. Best regards,J

Re: [aragorn2976] Naughty Beagle!

Hi, I hope it is just the hot weather. They are more active in the evening when it is cooler and just take cover in the day. Yes, I spayed Picnic before the first period. There are different schools of thought on whether to do it before or after. The latest thinking leans towards the before arguement. Anyway, since I didnt want to risk having a litter of mongoloid puppies, I thought it safer to do it earlier. Picnic is none the worst for it. She is still growing in pace with Sparky. Her temperament has also steadied somewhat recently despite being spayed. I havent decided to neuter Sparky. To begin with, he wont get pregnant anyway. And since I keep them indoors he doesnt get the chance to roam around unsupervised. Best regards,J

Re: [jaytan] Naughty Beagle!

TongueTongue... Hmmm.. Sounds like it is due to the hot weather... Kekeke...

Hmmm.. Sparky is not too aggressive, right? Anyway, some people do recommend neutering because it might help reduce the aggressiveness in males. Tongue Anyway, since one of the pair is spayed, this should be good enough... Wink

SlySlySly... I see...

Kekeke.. A reversal of roles... Picnic is more aggressive... TongueTongueTongue Hmmmm... Snoopy's parents are like that too. Snoopy's mom is the more dominant dog in her household... WinkWink
