Jack Russell Terrier - Behaviour Can't Post

Hi everybody!

I need advice from JRT owners. Recently, we adopted an abandoned JRT lookalike female. Physically, she resembles a JRT except the ears are slightly pointed (half floppy half pointed) and legs are longer, though she is bigger than a toy poodle but much smaller than a mongrel.

I would like to determine that she has JRT blood. Unlike my cocker spaniel, she is extremely skitterish ie full of nervous energy and when I pat her head, she gets so excited, moving her head up and down and ends up making my hand wet from her nose. She also has this lovely goggle like marking (brown) on her face, reverse Bambi spots on her body and when she is bathed, she has Chinese Crested Dog-like skin (pink and black) clearly visible.

She gets very very excited, prancing and dancing and doing yoga sun salutations with exteme helicopter tail wagging when she sees us.

Is that very typical behaviour of JRT?

Re: [gaudygoddess] Jack Russell Terrier - Behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi gaudygoddess,

Why not you post her picture here? Not sure how her ears look like since you mentioned (half floppy half pointed). Normally, JRT ears have "V" shaped drop ears. Some which have standing ears are not conforming to the standard breed. Their heights are ranging from 10" to 15" at the withers.

One think for sure about their colour....white should predominate (i.e., must be more than 51% white) with tan, black, or brown markings. The tan, black or blown marking is more predominate on the head and tail.

I think you can do a search in the internet to see whether yours are a JRT or not. I'm sure it is easy to identify once you have checked the internet.Smile Also, you can compare yours with my 2 JRTs in the avatar. Bye

Hi Dmax

Your doggies are so cute. She looks like that, although not as compact and muscly as your dogs and is predominantly white with brown goggles on her face. She has the piggy tail but brown spots on her back (very faded). Her body reminds me of a greyhound (must be because of her starvation while she was without a carer). In fact she is what I would describe as fine boned. Yeah, I think the best would be to post a picture of hers up. I will do it ASAP.

Thanks, hope I can identify her breed. Are your dogs as hyper as that? Compared to my other dogs, she really is hyper.

Re: [gaudygoddess] Jack Russell Terrier - Behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, both of them are hyperactive. They will chase anything that moves....even ants. Sometimes, I can see victims lying dead on the house compound Laugh....lizards, worms, dragonflies, etc. They are also plant killers...they munched their way into the roots and they dug out the roots too. They are also good jumper...the male can jump as high as my chest. They are very fun to play with and the male will run around the compund in circle when the female try to chase him. They can also be good guarddogs. They will bark vigorously when they see strangers stopping in front of the gate. Of course, they will also bark when they see other dogs and cats. When they were puppies, I can outrun them in an open field but now they can beat me anytime.

hi gaudygoddess,

Well, my Tau Tau is also not 100% JRT but of course her features more towards JRT...My Tau Tau's ear is like pointed (no drop at all, just like german shephard) compared to urs.

Anyway, about their behaviour...their actually born to be fox hunting dogs. So their basic characteristic would be active, playful, intelligent and require some amount of exercise. To get more information, mayb you could search the web for more information about JRT and sometime they are called Parson Russell Terrier or Parson Jack Russell.

Yeah, about the excitement when she sees you..its that she wants to give love to ya....so just go and pat her for awhile..then she'l be ok...cheersWink

Cheers always!

Re: [gaudygoddess] Jack Russell Terrier - Behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

Frequently asked QuestionsWhat famous Jack Russell Terriers would I recognize?
"Eddie" on the television show Frasier. He is a rough coat. "Milo" from the movie "The Mask" is a smooth coat. The puppy in the RCA commercial. "Barkley" from the movie "Clean Slate" with Dana Carvey. More recent has been a terrier in an MCI commercial. Also, the Nissan commercial has a JRT in it, and there is a pizza commercial where a JRT and a shaggy dog lick sauce off a giggling child's face. The PBS show "Wishbone" features the JRT Wishbone.
How much should I expect to pay for a Jack Russell Terrier?
Most breeders are charging anywhere from $350.00 to $600.00 for a puppy. Don't forget all the other costs involved with owning a dog -- vaccinations, neutering/spaying, food, toys, crate, home improvements (better fencing), books, obedience classes (a must!), etc. You might be able to adopt a Jack Russell from Russell Rescue for a lower up-front purchase price.
Are Jack Russell Terriers really as energetic as they seem?
Jack Russell Terriers are very energetic dogs, with a big need for regular exercise. They are working dogs, and need to have a job, whether it be keeping your yard free of rodents (digging is normal and common, since they are bred to dig after quarry), chasing a ball, or going for a run or long walk with it's owner. Sitting on the couch peacefully all day is not in a Jack Russell's agenda. They require more of a time commitment than some breeds.
Because they are small, they seem ideal for living in an apartment. Will a Jack Russell be happy in an apartment situation?
Given the exercise requirements of the Jack Russell, a home with a large, fenced yard is more appropriate. They do not take well to inactive, sedentary lifestyles. However, if you are at home during the day or are able to provide regular exercise, it may work. They need a 5-6 foot high fence, since they are known to jump, climb, and even dig under fences. Many of the Jack Russells in the Rescue are there because the owner underestimated the attention requirements of the terrier. Author's note: I work 8 hours a day, and my JRT is home alone for this time. She does fine in a small dog-proofed room, and doesn't seem unhappy about her situation.
Will a Jack Russell Terrier cohabititate with my cat/small pet/young child/horse?
Cats and other small pets (rodents) will usually not work with a Jack Russell because these dogs are first and foremost hunting dogs. They see the cat or hamster/rat/guinea pig as prey (quarry). This is not true for all Jack Russells, and if brought into the household as a pup, most could be trained to live with a cat. Many Jack Russell owners are horse people. Jack Russells are not herding dogs, so the horse isn't of interest to them. Children under the age of six can be a problem, unless the child is taught how to properly handle the terrier. Having the natural assertive terrier characteristics, however, the Jack Russell will not put up with even unintended abusive behavior from a child. This should be carefully considered, particularly with children under six.
Are Jack Russell Terriers dog aggressive?
They can be very aggressive with other dogs (not just other terriers), and in certain cases, more than two terriers shouldn't be kept together unattended. It is very important that prospective Jack Russell owners understand this sometimes harsh part of the terrier's nature.
Can I train the hunting instinct out of my Jack Russell?

To be blunt, perhaps you should consider a different breed if you don't wish to have a hunting dog. Jack Russell Terriers can be difficult to deal with because they are true hunting dogs. They should be kept on leash when in rural/country areas, because if they take off after a ground squirrel or other quarry, they will not hesitate to dig and go underground. Terriers have been known to stay underground with their quarry for days, with no food or water.

Re: Sad Story : ( [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you so much for all the great replies. 2 days ago, my sister called me up to inform me that they found Goggles outside the house dead. We don't know if somebody had hit her or a car hit her. Her body did not have any injuries.

Ironically, she spent so many days walking up and down our road looking for food before we took her in.
She must have run out of the house without us knowing it when the gate opened.

Was a sad day for me and she was a lovely, loving dog. I am utterly convinced now that she was a JRT mixed as coincidentally passed by 2 guys with their JRT and had a look at their skin (pink and black) and face. Goggles had the same look as them, except for the ears and longer, sleeker legs.

Quite a sad time for us. A couple of months ago, had rescued a sweet little purple furred kitten and had his poor broken leg fixed only for it to die from cat flu, which I suspected he may have picked up at the vet while having his joint taken out.

Ah well, at least these poor abandoned animals had a comfy life until they had to go. Sometimes I think it must have been their fate to die young and meeting us prolonged their lives a bit longer.

Remeber this, always appreciate the pets you have, you never know when they will leave you.

P/S Goggles loved to be hugged, and she would lick me profusely in return

I so sorry to hear that Goggles has passed away. Actually what happened to her? You were mentioning abour her the other day and she is no longer with you now. It is so sudden. And so sad for her since she has just found a new owner and proper place to stay. Have you determined the cause of her death? If it is not due to external injury, it may be due to internal problems.

Your neighbour's JRT puppy has all white coat? It is possible since JRT breed can vary significantly. I have a JRT puppy with whole body brown in colour except his belly and legs. Quite unique but not conform to standard. I have his pic attached here.

The Mask.....Milo right? Looks great in movie...very well trained. Don't be deceived by that movie character lah. Actually, if not properly trained, they can really misbehave and can be very destructive too. Guess what...we renovated our front portion of the house because of our JRTs lah....totally destroyed our garden.

Fiona,

ECS puppies..so tiny. Previously, I also wanted a ECS but after hearing what the vet said about ECS not very friendly with children, I decided not to get one. Actually, how are they with children?

Why not I let you adopt one of my JRT puppies and you let me adopt yours? hehehe.

Hi Fiona,

It's also good that you stop production. It is very sad to see some dogs are suffering when their owners cannot take good care of them. I have a neighbour who has a ECS is now keeping the dog behind the house most of the time. They always tied up the dog and the dog always bark for attention.

Also, I always see another ECS running around and crossing the road alone even in heavy rain near our area. My wifey saw and wanted to kidnap the dog. Cannot bear to see him hit by cars. Later, we found out that this ECS belongs to some bachelors renting a house nearby. They seem don't care about the dog.

I thought they will look nicer with their tails docked. All my JRT puppies were docked when they were 3 days old.

We like your cockers so much. They are so friendly not like our jrts which are so fierce. Wondering when can we ever have one. Wink And your friend's poodles, they are so adorable in the pic. Too bad, next time must save enough money to buy a farm...then we can house all the doggies there.Smile

How's patch? Is he enjoying your companion at the moment or has he followed gary home. Hope he can adjust to his new owner. As for pinto, we will find him a good home. Yes...please keep in touch.

After a long thought... if... only if ok? You cannot find a better home for Pinto, we think we can think of bringing him in our family... Since I don't work and all, I can spend more time with him... Since he was taught to cage-up, maybe it is easier "lo".. if you can teach me how to discipline him... I have no heart to cage him "la" so need advice on that... What you think? But I really hope you can keep him actually.. I had a bad experience with my puppies... So I thought I can help your wife for a relieve and also because I find that my younger daughter who never want to get near a dog this close, seem to be very comfortable with your puppies... But whatever it is, all the best with it... And again.. we really love to keep in touch with you and your family "lo"... Maybe we can joint-venture into having a farm and there also I can have my little horse ranch I have been dreaming of Smile Fiona

Hi,

I'm in office now...was forced to come back to office to do some work.Frown Anyway saw your message about Pinto. Yes, I think it is better to let someone adopt him cause I don't think me and you could afford to give him the attention he needed the most. Someone may love him more than us. The only problem like you said is that they never come back to update us. So sad.

At the moment, we are babysitting Dao Dao, their sister. She is so happy over here playing none stop with Tubby and her parent. It's like a vacation for her here while her owner went back to hometown during this holiday. It's nice to see her growing sweeter now.

Hope you can update us on Patch. I know it's a bit difficult but maybe next time "lo". Maybe you can encourage your friend to come to this website or ask her to bring Patch to the next gathering at BU in January next year. It will be great to see him there.

Re: [dmax] Jack Russell Terrier - Behaviour [In reply to] Can't Post

You are not the first one.... My husband will be working tomorrow alone at the studio... He told me he might be the only one working or maybe 3 of them... I did told my friend, Fiona (hehe same name) about this website where I met you and all but not her sister... Maybe Fiona did (so weird to mention this name which is not refering to me. People here known me as Fiona, see?).. Fiona and I meet at least once a week so maybe I will ask her about update on Patch and let you know... By the way, you have to sms me or email me your home address to send you a few photos I took the other day on Pinto and Spotty (Patch)... You are right... We have like 3 dogs and don't know who to attend to but anyway, I always make sure I give all 3 the same attention unless when one of them sick, I will give extra attention to him/her... I remember when I have 3 dogs and 3 cats in an apartment during my stay in the States... I am always worry when there are warning of tonardo and t-strom of who to save first... gosh... But well, thanks God Idid manage all of them equally... and no need to worry who to save first... And hey, I did really wanted Pinto too because I did fell for them both... keep in touch... Fiona

Re: Adopted another JRT mixed! [In reply to] Can't Post

Announcement! Just to let you guys know that my siblings have adopted a JRT mixed puppy from PAWS.

I was getting ready to knock my sis' head if she bought her from a petshop. Luckily not at all!

She is extremely frisky and playful and looks 70% JRT.

I hope she will have a long and healthy life with my family.

Thanks to everybody for being so sympathetic!

Congrats.... So happy for you and your family... Must be a very excited moment... I miss those time already... Ever since the neighbors give problems even my dogs are not giving trouble... I cannot adopt anymore... even cannot adopt Dmax's puppy fully... Wish I can just adopt many many dogs which I ever can... Update me on your new puppy then... By the way, I have done a little donation drive with a friend and glad to see at last there is someone who will adopt puppy from there... Did you still see the Cocker there? Anyway, you can see our messages posted under PAWS... Fiona

Hi! So far I have only seen the puppy once but my brother says she is a cute thing, with a big belly, spotted with pink and black markings. It seems she was given up by the previous owner. Maybe she's naughty.

Oh yeah, we have been adopting our cats and doggies from PAWs because they really need help and once somebody abandoned this poor huge dalmation in front of our house during Chinese New Year, we sent it to PAWs with a donation of course.

In so far, we are very happy with the pets. I myself am itching to adopt a kitty or doggy but my husband and I are not at home so often so we don't want to give these animals such a lonely existence. At the moment I am quite contented with the stray kitties hanging around my backlane. Which reminds me, I have to buy kitty food to feed them. Hope everything turns out OK with you and your doggy situation!

Hi Fiona

I did check out your website. Wow! the amount of pets you had! I like the cat "Tiger" I used to have a cat that looked like that and not only was he cute, he had a personality of a dog - followed me around and uses his paw to open my cupboard. Unfortunately a neighbour ran him over. Got my hubby to buy the cat food (another cat and dog lover) and fed the poor strays behind my house. Funnily they are beautiful, with one looking like a Bengal - Greyish white stripes with topaz eyes. One wears a tuxedo and one we named "crampon" because my husband was squatting down and this kitty launched onto his shirt with his claws to attach himself. No stray doggies in my area (TTDI- Malay area) which is good too because it would be more animals to pity! My dad has been asking me to get at least a toy dog to alert us of any intruder but I told him it won't be fair for it as my husband travels a lot and I usually go back to my parents' house. Oh well, after I settle in the new house then we'll see. After joining this forum, I am also utterly convinced to never take dogs from petshops and have been encouraging people to do likewise.

Re: Such cute little doggies - Operafest to raise funds for strays [In reply to] Can't Post

I must put my siblings' doggy picture up. Today I am going over to my parents' house to have a look at the doggy. I heard she's a terror, pulling out plants (no wonder she was given up) but rest assured my parents are the type that even if the dog is so naughty they would never send them back to PAWS (unless they start frothing at the mouth and biting people - mad dog) They believe in till death do us part. I just got an e-mail from a cat/dog lover maybe I can put it up. It is for the Operafest and raising funds for Madam Kang of Taiping who keeps strays. Can anyone point me to the right place to put up annuncements like these in puppy.com?

Thanks!

Hi gaudygoddess,

You're so kind to adopt animals from PAWS and SPCA. Are you interested to adopt Angel from SPCA? Sad to see her there. I have thought of adopting her but our house could not accommodate another dog. We have 3 JRTs at home. I don't mind co-sharing with you to adopt Angel if it is acceptable to you. We can make some kind of arrangement. Read the attachment about Angel.

Re: Poor thing [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi DMax and Fiona,

DMax, your JRTs are so very very cute! I want to squeeze them! I noticed that JRTs loved to be picked up and squeezed hugged. The tail goes into overdrive. Also, luckily becuase they look like mongrel to the untrained eye, they are less likely to be dognapped.
So sad to see Angel there. What makes me really mad is that she was abandoned due to her old age. Unfortunately at this point in time, I have ruled out keeping any pets (I just moved into a new home) and if I do keep, it would most probably be a cat. I am more of a cat lover and I always feel that dogs are more attached to the carers and need a lot more attention, something which I cannot give. My husband and I are spend a lot of time outside the house. He is a dog lover but he also feels that it would be very sniffy for the doggy if we leave him at home all the time. At the moment I am contented with playing with my parents and siblings doggies.
Fiona so sad to hear about your horrible neighbours. My siblings too have the same "kind" of neighbour - very hypocrite. Perhaps your dogs make too much noise or the smell of the faeces?

I understand your preference for cat. My wife is also a great cat lover. She had a cat before but he passed away due to old age. I like cat too but just that we can't keep one now though we are tempted to do so. This is because my twin daughters are asthmatic, so we can't have furry animals inside the house.

Re: My cheeky stray cats [In reply to] Can't Post

This morning had a contractor come over to the back of my house, lo and behold, cats and kittens of all sizes just took the liberty to walk into my kitchen. My husband just shooed them away. I think even once they came into my kitchen and walked on the counter before (paw marks) still they're so poor thing and I'll try to feed them.

Doggy-wise I really like JRTs now, although my brother has been telling me now he knows why the puppy was given up, probably the owner could not handle it. Sad story, my friend's dad had to give up their Labrador Retriever as he could not cope. And they were imported. Luckily the people who took over the dogs spoil them so much to the point that they hired bathers to come to the house to bathe them.

Mmmmmmm I wish I come back as somebody's pet dog in my next life.

The other day we went to visit SPCA and saw so many nice cats there. Wondering why they are not wanted. If we decide to have a cat, we will adopt one from there. We prefer cats with short hair....not persion cats which look so serious. Well then, why not get a cat for your new home. Cats can catch mouse. :)

Glad to hear you received them already.. I find that our postman services suck at times... Get lost and all... Nah, just wish to share something little with you.. You have share something so lovely and pretty big with us too, you know - JRT puppy... You can view some of our work from vicfion.tripod.com... Painting? I do paint but never a great one... but really have to be really into the mood that you can paint a good picture.. I guess if I practice more I might improve in that... I did a few nice ones though... I sketch and yet not a talented one.. all I can say is I love Art, ven I am no good at it, I still love to be able to do them just that with my 2 angels, it is pretty hard to sit down and sketch or paint all I want... By the way, I was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (General Art)... My husband is much better designer.. He has been in this field since 1997 not counting the years of his college life... Oh yeah, that Bull Terrier drew by a friend and made into a card who I helped out in selling them and she gave me some to send to my friends last time... You can view her cards at vicfion.wakaf.net if you interested... I only have 2 left and I can let you have them, she gave me to send to my friends too you see... Keep in touch... Fiona

Re: To dmax. Getting doggy to accept kitty [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, I so love tabby cats too! If somebody wanted to give me a Persian, I would not want it at all. I do agree that SPCA especially has lovely cats but they have a policy of 2 week wait and they are pretty adamant about it. I can understand why but for me, all our dogs and cats are desexed and have been lucky not to experience pregnant pet dogs and cats.Hee hee with all those cats hanging around my house, I think even the rats won't want to cari makan at my house. My husband even found a big tom cat sleeping so luxuriously on our welcome mat one morning! Incidentally, my parents mongrelly dog used to catch rats, crows and mosquitos.

How would your doggies react if you introduce a cat into their lives? The JRT adopted by my siblings is afraid of the 2 cats in the house but its only because they've established themselves already. A few times I observed when the doggy ventures too near to the cats, they get ready to "box" her.

I guess JRTs themselves are not violent dogs.

Re: [gaudygoddess] To dmax. Getting doggy to accept kitty [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi gaudygoddess,

Just beware of your dog. If he is purebred JRT, watch out for your cats' safety. JRT is a hunting breed of dog that looks upon small fury animals as prey. Though the little JRT may looks cute but behind its "cuteness" lies a dog with the heart of a lion and all its hunting instincts still very much intact.

If we were to get a cat, we will have to keep them separated and closely watched. Maybe it is not possible for us to keep a cat after all as it will be very dangerous for the cat and very noisy for us too. My 3 JRTs will keep barking at the cat the whole day. Don't think it is a good idea and I don't want to come home one day and see a dead cat :)

If JRT is not properly trained, they can become very aggressive. That's why normally JRT owners are advised not to play tug of war with them. If you consider keeping a dog, I would recommend you to keep a toy dog like shih tzu or poodle. They look so cute and fun to play with....not so active as compared to JRT

Hi Fiona,

Eer..talking about art, I don't really know how to appreciate art or painting. My wife appreciates them better and she likes those oil painting especially the one with people painted in it.

So, what does your hubby do since he is also a designer. Have you thought of going into greeting card business. If you or your hubby can draw and design very well, that business can be lucrative too....just need to be unique in you own design. Like that bull terrier card..it's quite unique.

Art is a very beautiful thing.. I just love Art but not really good at it... More interest than talent...
We tried on that business... Not doing good.. My husband's cousin asked us to design her cards (actually more of her designs.. she thinks she is better than us and changed all our ideas..she is client, what to do?) I still see a lot of her cards at her house even though she told us business ok, not bad... I did try on the postcards.. and not doing well... to print already need a lot of money which I don't have extra on because kids come first... Very hard especially now have email and e-cards... I did put cards at some shop and can see how bad was the progress...
So did Katherine send you photo or such? She promise to let me have a few days and all but now not even a call from her... I know already, she just want all to herself.. I am so stupid enough to trust her and believe in joint-ownership... I actually already know this will happen but I really like your puppy so much... Fiona

Re: To dmax. Getting doggy to accept kitty [In reply to] Can't Post

dmax

Thanks so much for your information. So far she has not displayed any aggresiveness but my brother observed that when he saw her in PAWS she was growling at the other dogs when it was makan time and at bigger dogs. Eeee now I am afraid for the cats. So far, one of them is very dominant but I noticed she hurt her leg one day and could it be due to her "boxing" the doggy away? Anyway, my brother has been not shy about using force to make her behave herself though I feel very "sum thoong" when I see it as all this while my parents kept a mixed doggy (crazy) and 1 cocker (very docile and lovable) so not used to seeing such energetic behaviour. Since I read that previously you do beat them then I think my brother should continue disciplining her. If she does get aggresive, I will have to take the 2 cats back to my house to keep them out of harm's way. That's why its always very prudent to speak to owners and read up about the breeds before getting one. Like the 101 Dalmation problem when people found out they are not as cute as the movie portrayed them. Now people are "Finding Nemo" too, much to the detriment of the coral environment. I suspect that the doggy isn't 100% JRT as one of her ears are starting to stand up already. Hopefully the agression has been bred out of her as well.

Yeah, with cats, I always observed that when the cat comes first or kitty and puppy are brought up together it's OK, but not when the dog comes first. I also support that you don't take a cat because if you keep the cat in the house, it would go crazy and start tearing your house up.
