in that case, do the proper test instead. there's already a breed chapter here in malaysia. is that not possible? :/

Hunter, I really wish it was tht simple. Read my earlier thread. Perhaps this question should be directed to the breed chapter concerned. Nicely put, I think I better not comment on this to save some embarassment.

Others do your comments if you felt necessary. I'm done.

Hi guys,

Quote : ""do the proper test instead. there's already a breed chapter here in malaysia. is that not possible? ""
-----------------------------------------------------------
Yes there is a breed chapter in M'sia....! and if I m not mistaken the chapter has been here much longer than I came to be aquainted with our dear GSD ...! !
yet other than organising specialty shows after specialty shows, there's seems to be nothing else they can come up with to help improve the quality of GSD in this country...!

Well as matter of fact the quality seems to be going backwards, just ask any folks out there who r thinking of getting a workingbreed pup, what do they associate GSD with ? what else..... bad hips, skin problem, fear biter, ....blah-blah-blah ! !
or better still take a look at no. of posts on board complaining abt GSD wt hips problem or abt irresponsible GSD breeder. Frown

Therefore irregardless of what we suggest here on board . . . . those running the chapter will simply choose to ignore even if they r on board..... ! it does not matter how good our suggestion is , the whole issue here is abt economics.....basically it means getting the grand champ title on their GSD ASAP (I guess that should be quite easy looking at the position they r in) and then either selling the champ to the highest bidder or stud the champ out to those eager beaver out there...puppy miller incl as long as the price is rite....! !

Darn ! ! .....I m thinking of joining them alredi...! Tongue

The whole point here is even if we can come up with a good system to improve the quality of GSD here but wth those "economic czar" still around running the show, sooner or later the system or breeding guideline will still be corrupted and continue to produce "problematic" GSD......! !

Hi,

Some story to tell........

ok let me put it this way, if the GSDs that owned by the tai kor of this chapter also does not qualify for the test, do u think any good for them to put their 'super dog' in test ?

"Protection training even if its done properly is very stressful and can damage your dogs temperament if its not cut out for the work."

That is also what I'm worried abt...Unsure but....it's my dad.

Anyway, Tyson's 7 and 1/2 mths. Hazel is abt 1 yr 6mths.

Also...someone told me that if a dog were to be trained/handled by one trainer and then sent back to me, he may not be as keen on the commands? since he was trained in their facilities and by them. Crazy Is that true?

hmm...

From what u just posted...my opinion on that "trainer" has really changed.

The "trainer" said that the recommended age to send Tyson for training was 6 mths...and I hv been reading the threads and at 6 mths..is only the beginning of bitework.

He also said the dog would be "trained" abt 2-3 mths Pirate

This will not happen with GSD. If the dog is properly trained, the trainer whom train them (inclusive the helper) are stranger to them, they will not get close with the dog. Some proper hand over and bonding between your dog and u also play a vital part in this.

Hi RD,

for the retraining and 'refinement' of what the dog actually learn, what they need is 1 or 2 session per year to make sure everything in place.

Hi,

I agree with Boon in this case. I handled trained guard dogs before, and they only listen to the commands & hand signals, regardless of your face & sex Smile.. Like what Boon's commented, a close bonding is still necessary. In my case, I repeated the training sessions with them to bridge the bond.

RD,

Let your dogs enjoy their puppyhood before you do protection training. If 1 mth of dogs life = 1 year human life, a 6 mths dog should attend kindergarten. Some of us although pass the that stage, still cannot defend ourselves in the face of danger. NOT all GSD/Rott/Dobe/Mal/APBT/BM....
can become protection dogs.

Qoute:
Also...someone told me that if a dog were to be trained/handled by one trainer and then sent back to me, he may not be as keen on the commands? since he was trained in their facilities and by them. Is that true?
,-._,-.

My protection dog was trained in a country and commands that I can't even pronounce properly....
Bonding... my friend is key .
You want the dog to protect you then it must have a good reason to risk his life. He'll have to choose between fight or flight.

Hi RD,

Hope U dun mind me barging in, but can't help noticing ur comment abt the "trainer" u talk to :

Quote :

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dun thk a dog is ready for protection work before at least 1 yr of age, their mental development would not be able to handle the stressful defensive work of the protection training. Even after 1 yr of age, it will still need gradual increment during the defensive training phase. Too much & too fast will destroy the dogs confidence & temperament.

Before 1 yrs of age, IMO it is best to do prey/biteworks promotion to build up the dog's confidence & at the same time develop bond between the dog & the owner/handler. Tongue

Re: [RealityDreamer] Serious Section for Serious Discussion [In reply to] Can't Post

RD,

Don't mean in my post to put down any trainer. Therefore hope u understand me in this. I just wanted u to be aware about the different type of training methods.

Depend on what u want for the dog. If it is just plain protection bitework then wait until at least 1.5 years. Meanwhile u do a bit of OB and continue your bonding work. Then when the time comes do protection work together with the trainer. this is best for bonding and the protection trainer/helper will remain a stranger to the dog. This way the dog will not be confused.

SchH dogs however starts training from 2 months and proceed until trialing.

RD,

Regretted I could not help you much here as it is mine and the board's policy that I do not divulge anything commercial. I can only advice you to ckeck out the trainers throughly before embarking on anything......and ask to observe the training sessions if those trainers are not known to you nor recomended by someone you know very well.

Rgds.

 ,

Don't worry he's just doing puppy bitework. It's quite safe if you can keep your hands steady for him to target the bite.
I hope the experience will improve our understanding of workinglines.
For me, I need to see if he'll take on a stranger though he seems unsure at first.
