a backyard breeder vs a homebreeder is, IMHO based on ethics, whether one should breed dogs solely for profit or passion. you'll notice that backyard breeders mostly or always sell puppies for a profit without any thought of the consequence to the bloodline, physical attributes, etc...
in other words, there are some people who breed dogs just for the sake of it.. they "like" to breed dogs, and doing so with minimal knowledge of the standard (or probably just enough to breed a good enough looking puppy) etc. To compare a reputable homebreeder and backyard breeder is quite unfair... true professional homebreeders do not need to advertise thier services but rely on reputation and word of mouth, afterall they do know what they are doing and talking about. dont you agree?

Hi tyler,
if you have read through my postings, you would have find that I have mentioned "home breeder can also be backyard breeder (meaning might NOT have any knowledge of breeding their dog) just breed n sell cheap-cheap for the sake of breeding n selling puppies."
To me, people who does not know why they are breeding the dogs/pets then they would be consider as a backyard breeder.... coz they are not breeding with the sole purpose of IMPROVING the breed standard. But one thing you have to know is that, these are the poeple who will still call themselves as homebreeder irregardless coz what they know is that "if i breed my dogs at home then I'm a homebreeder" this is how they (the mindless people) think of themselves.... They will not admit that they are backyard breeder at all.
To us who have seen some professional home breeder we know what a home breeder is.
I'm NOT comparing the homebreeder and a backyard breeder at all... I'm just saying there is ppl who 'pretends' that they are professional homebreeder but infact is doing backyard breeding behind and i see that as fact of life if u look through the papers n advertisements and etc....
If you notice sometimes homebreeders do advertisement too (like website for example)... so we can't say that they only sell by the word of mouth n reputation at all.
This is just my humble opinion lar....
cheers, minglmy

I think I will get a dog from almost anyone as long as I like the puppy. Can't really stand the way they look at me... so cute !!! If I really have to choose, then I will get from a well known breeder if I can afford it.

Hi,
Totally agree with your opinion.. I guess when it comes down to it.. Seeing the breeder and the dogs living conditions will ultimately show what kind of breeder they are. Unfortunately, the public is more 'exposed' to the backyard sort and it seems to be the number of such breeders outnumber the decent ones. So I guess some people assume the worse lor... But then again it's their opinion right?

its not your ENGERISH lar......its the way u expressed your opinions mar
i geuss maybe u were expose to the wrong kind of ppl who consider themselves ethical homebreeders..but are in actualy fact.....backyard breeder/puppymill.....
very subjective...the only way is.....if u really wan to get another pup....go to the breeders house
take a good look at the condition of the place..thne decide for urself whehter u should buy from that fella or not loh.........up to individual rite?
if there was no demand in puppy...they wont be a puppymill.....a lot of ppl still not aware mar....so ppl will still buy from puppymill..not knowing that they are supporting this trade..indirectly

well, the thing is i did say 'some 'claims' to be homebreeder but is infact a backyard breeder' things sometimes is not that define.
There is professional home breeder (the real case) and also there is those who is the 'claims' case.
Lots of people does not know how to differenciate it btw both of them. Just like most of the people have not heard about puppymills before so, how do they know there is such a thing happening in the puppy market ?

T"o me, people who does not know why they are breeding the dogs/pets then they would be consider as a backyard breeder.... coz they are not breeding with the sole purpose of IMPROVING the breed standard."
hmmm....can't say i agree with you there..
so..if ur dog doesn't hv a good pedigree or does not hv something that can contribute to the breed, and you breed that dog.....are u considered a backyard breeder although u still care for the dog and only say, breed it once or twice in her life time?
how bout the working dogs? there aren't many working dogs that conform to the standard...they're bred for their instincts..
"If you notice sometimes homebreeders do advertisement too (like website for example)... so we can't say that they only sell by the word of mouth n reputation at all."
erm....how can home breeders rely on reputation? the dogs they hv are average dogs that may or may not conform to the standards, unless they hv a good temperament, then that's a different story.
anyways,tht's just my 2 cents worth...no pun intended ,-._,-. \/)"(\/ (_o_)

Hi Chloe,
like i say many - many times.... keep repeating myself all over again till tired n sien liao ! I think this will be the LAST post I will post on this topic... enuf is enuf !
The thing is it is very subjective on the words... some have different opinion from me and I'm not pushing my opinion to anyone here. If u dun agree then that's ur own prespective and I'm sure each individual have their very own opinion and reason on this issue....its FINE with me...
my dog does not have a pedigree and I DUN plan to breed them. Why breed when you are not contributing to the breed standard ? the only thing at the end of the day you might be contributing at might be a future pups with some kind of disease.... because everyone think along the same line. breed ur dog for once or twice in his/her lifetime. Caring for the dog does not means that you have to breed them at all.
The reason I feel this way its because if you have seen puppies who is sick with skin disease, hip problem, cancer, badly infected mange and etc due to genetic then you would know how it feels like to have a happy cute puppy giving you a sad pained filled eye look while all the other puppies is happily jumping n playing by the side. Some pups have to put down to sleep because of genetic health problems and suffer for their short life during the time.
Good temprement and having good health is different. I'm NOT saying that homebreeder rely on reputation... (I'm answering to tyler's post lar... read his then mine)
cheers, minglmy

To me I don't think I have the expertise to identify genetic defects in a dog. I will get myself the dog if I have the capacity to do so and as long as the dog seems to be healthy (active, as in not like 'bed-ridden').
My Mocha has mange problems, but I adopted her anyway because she is cute and I like her. Now her mange problem is "under control" and she is always happy to see me home from work. Always wanted to wake me up from sleep in the morning, just that she couldn't jump up to the bed (too high up)... hehehe... Very funny, always jumping up to lick my face !
But as it was pointed out earlier, it's always a good thing not to breed if your dog is unhealthy or up to the breed standard. Most people will welcome a healthy dog rather than an unhealthy one. It's just common sense.
So, the backyard breeding has to stop. Breed only if you know what you are doing!!!

backyard breeder will never stop....unless ppl STOP buying those puppies( which will never happen)
so...its really hard for us to stop backyard breeders............dun tell me everyday stand infront of petshop n tell potentail customers 'dun buyyyy the puppies dun buy' meh? bit silly...
its a vicious cycle of demand for cheap puppies.....and puppymills producing those puppies.....whether sick or healthy....
and i agree with realitydreamer......they are not breeding to improve the genetic stock of the breed..merely breed just for the sake of money.........
