How many tricks does your dog know?! Can't Post

How many tricks does your dog know?! Certain behaviours shouldn't be counted here (i.e. going to the bathroom to pee/poo).

Emphasize on tricks that he/she performs upon signals. "Sit" or "Stay" should be counted. Smile

Silky: sit, down, stay, come, stop, shake hand,up,catch(not very good aim though),go up while pointing to the place where u want her to go,come down(down fr the bed, chair etc),shake, this way, heel, over, play dead, inside(while walking, go inside meaning go nearer to the side of the road, or go into the hse), out

Tyson: sit,down,stay,stand,come,shake hand,sit up,catch,speak,inside(same as silky),this way,heel,stop and out.

Hazel: just got her recently..and not much time to train her..only knows heel(abit) and stop so far.

upon signals meaning hand signals only? coz if that's the case..Silky and Tyson only know shake hand, down and stay.

Smile

erm...terms like to get the dog ready for walks counted or not?

Not only hand signals, spoken instructions too. Smile

Wow. Your dogs are really good. Are you strict on them, or they are just quick learners?Shocked

Here's what my Mocha can do : sit, stay, go (to start eating), hand, left-hand, right-hand, down, catch, sleep (like play dead but with eyes wide open), up (usually to get her rewards), in (going into her crate !)...

I am still working on : "give" (to give me the ball) - can't seem to get this into her, maybe she enjoys the pulling too much. Another one is "relax" - i think dogs are usually cuter when they relax. Smile

When Mocha is outdoors : The above goes back to zero. Except for the occassional "sit" (maybe just tired). Tongue

Elly, pee and poo are not tricks you know... hehehe ... I mean, we won't usually show people that our dog pees upon command/signal, right? TongueCoolWink

Wah.. everyone's dog is so smart. But mine, like Mocha goes back to zero the moment he's outdoors. But I'm having problems getting him to stay. Any tips?

Ah yes, and of course the magic word, 'kai kai'.

Did you train Mocha yourself?

they learn quick...

luckily.. *phew*

but for Hazel...a bit difficult.

Oh yea..all of them know "let go" which means let go of whatever's in their mouth.

and "ok,good dog" which means ok,u can eat.

for my dogs..so far...it's ok. only if it's too hot....then everything goes to zero too.

SmileHi

My pom: sit, hand, down(all these only with his favourite treats, without them don't dream), kai kai, bring his leash when he wanna go out. pull my hand when he wants something, bark n carry his nose high when he wants treats, scratch the door open himself if he wants to enter my room, jump up the bed when wanna sleep, lick my face when wanna go out, pull my mum's skirt when the phone's ringing, greet me when i'm home....jump up the car when he wanna go out, stare sadly on the road n the door when he is sad or when it's raining coz cannot go out, wait for me at the gate even when raining when i'm out.

Lab: haiya..so sad...hand, fetch, sit, stand, eat, steal food, scratch door to open n bark when hungry...not much talent.

U know, i have a friend who's shih tzu knows how to bring bowl when it'd dinner time and put it back after his meal...Winksmart riteSmile

Re: [angie_yeoh] How many tricks does your dog know?! [In reply to] Can't Post

hellosSmile

what i did with my dogs was i used the thinnest string i could find(I used those strings fr the construction site). Make sure it's strong enough for ur dog...but fr ur avatar(i assume the lil shih tzu's ur dog)...don't think u'll hv a problem gettng a thin string that can withstand ur doggie's strength.

then..tie him somewhere. While being tied..play with him to take his mind of the string. After some play..calm him down. Then say "stay". Move a few steps away. The dog might struggle to get to u..but just wait till he calms down(he'll know that by pulling, nth will be accomplished).Once he calms down...give him a few seconds..and then praise loads.try to say "gooooood stay"...repeat a few times. After every other session..make him stay longer. Do not go further from him yet. Also after a few sessions, u do not need to tie/leash him..but just trick him into thinking that he's tied up by tying the dog's collar and leave the string trailing to the place he's tied up to. Once he can stay long enough(that's up to u to decide...not too long though..around 15 seconds should suffice), u can move further away. A few more sessions...u can take the string off...but just leave it there..again to trick him into thinking he's tied up. After a few more sessions, u can take the string away completely.

I'm not so sure abt other dogs..(but i think it should be the same)...after a considerable number of training sessions, he'll take his mind of the string and wouldn't realize the string is even there...but just in case he does..that's y leave it there.

Hi Chloe,

Thanks for your tips. Will try with Furbie this weekend and hopefully when he's able to 'stay', he won't just simply run out of the house when he's not supposed to.

Thanks loads.

Re: [angie_yeoh] How many tricks does your dog know?! [In reply to] Can't Post

erm...simply run out the hse?

the stay training method..was to teach the dog that...if he stays..u'll come back and give a treat...

how long do u plan to go out? don't think u can make a doggie stay for hours.. Unsure

but then again...it might work...so just hv a good stay foundation. You wouldn't want ur doggie to think "if she's not here, that means i can go"

Maybe u can teach ur dog stay..and then maybe go inside the hse.

if it doesn't work...try this (once u hv the sit/down & stay command grounded)

leash Furbie and have treats handy. then sit him in front of the gate (assume u have auto gate) ...
sit Furbie and give stay command ...then open the gate and watch what Furbie does ...

As long as he maintains stay ... you are already half way to training him not to go out the gate with out command. Then release Furbie from stay and give the treat.

Back to sit & stay and repeat a couple of times all in front of gate..at the beginning with the closed..
then open gate and see if he can maintain his sit and stay.If he can ... release and praise/treat and return back to sit/stay again ...
... and for this exercise ... instead of usual leash ... use a longer trailing rope ...

the second part of training will be;you release him from stay ...
watch what he does ...if he goes out ... do recall ...
if he responds ... then major priase and jackpot!!! ...

jackpot means...extra special treat. Smile

btw, i was taught this method by none other than sifu surchinmySmile for one of my dogs..

but i nvr got to use it though...coz strangely...the day right after i asked him for training help...he just stopped running out...don't know why. Maybe it was coz(not sure abt this,k? i thought of it based on what a dog thinks...not proven or anything) When he ran out, i left the gate open for a while(to give him a chance to come back)after abt 2-3 mins i closed it. Then i played with my other dogs..to sort of make him jealous..to make him think " oh..i'm all alone outside here sniffing while my friends and mom are having fun inside..no fun here. Better to go back home and play" . Well, it did work and he came back almost instantly. Of course my voice was kinda loud and happy. So that he could hear how much fun we were having inside. When he got back, just let him join in the fun.. SmileSmileSmile and praise him loads.

Hope this helps Smile

Sorry, when I said run out, i meant into the garden. I only allow Furbie into the garden when I'm sure that no one is coming home. He has run out of the gate a couple of times when some one came home, but he came back instantly cause I yelled and he made an instant about turn back home!!

That was a big care. I see your point in them having a good stay foundation.

Like I said before, I will certainly have to teach him the stay command. For his safety and for my health (not to get a heart attack).

Thanks loads for your advise.

Hi mochacappucino,

My 3 mths mixed lab Nike know : Sit, Stay, Hand, No, Out, Up, Down, "Hui Qu"(Go back to his crate), poo on newspaper, retrieve his ball to me, he also will sit until i say go or knock his bowl b4 his meal.

He can do all command everytime i ask him to, especially when i ask him to sit b4 having his meal, he'll do whatever i teach until i knock his bowl.

Re: [angie_yeoh] How many tricks does your dog know?! [In reply to] Can't Post

Normally when we go out for a walk I would have her in my arms until we have passed the gate. Then I will let her down and she will start walking. This way, I hope that she will not have the "experience" of walking through the car park area. And as such, will not think of stepping onto it.

Of course, the "stay" command should always take place if I want her to stay inside the house even though the door is open and I am washing my car at the porch.

But sometimes I do bring her back to my hometown where she is allowed to roam about in the carpark and the garden area as it is spacious. So, there was one time we forgot to use the stay command, and maybe used to being in my hometown, she ran up to the gate. Luckily I called her back and she quickly ran back into the house and hid in her crate ! Maybe I sound too angry. I was actually shocked as the road in front is always busy with cars and lorries! Crazy

Always use the "stay" command !
