Hmm.. I heard that normally Shih Tzu will eat their own poo poo.. WEll.. that is really YUCKS! Pirate But I read abt this post somewhere ard here... that is one solution that u can try..

That is.. pour some pepper on the poo poo... hmm.. You can give it a try.

Thanks for the opinion...it was kind of relieved to me as it is a normal behaviour to many pups!

At first I thought she is sick or what???

Put pepper, well I might try it but she is very fast..you know...

Allow me to step in about your statement above ... I would say that is definitely NOT a normal behaviour but it is more onto a BAD Habbit!!!

Do spend extra time with your pet and do the correction on the spot if you could. At the same time, throw some toys to your pet for NEW attention so it may help to avoid the "temptation" of eating the "Poo-Poo".

There are few "effective" way of controlling this bad habbit, try to hit the search key and to find the related post here in Puppy Com.

Yeah, it is indeed a bad habit! Thanks for the reminder...the next time I saw her eating then I'll punish her,Mad

The problem is she would never want to 'poopoo' and 'weewee' anywhere except her crate... Nomatter how long time spend outside, evening walk also she will keep on 'tahan' till we are back in her crate!

I think, Im starting to get an headache!

Re: [melanie] Eating poo poo [In reply to] Can't Post

I guess a 3 months old pup still not able to tahan long. They will still poo and pee in crate until they reach a certain age where they identified the crate as their sleeping den and playground. Maybe you can let him eat his meal inside or put some toys (if ur not afraid that the toy will get dirty wif poos), just to make him feel welcome in?

I found that dogs wont do their business in the place where they have their meals or sleeps.

I dun think so punishing her physically will do any trick but a stern NO to her when you see her going to eat the poo may help.

I guess now you can try to find a spot where she can go 'potty' whenever you are not free to bring her out? You can use a word to let her understand though.

hi lisa,
Refer to your statement:
"I guess a 3 months old pup still not able to tahan long. " . It could be breed dependent also. My 3-month (then) Rex can 'tahan' for 10 - 11 hours.

Melanie, did u get your pup from the petshop ? If so, that may be the problem. As pups from petshop are typically crated day&night, and they just used to relief in their own crate. The next time she discharge again in the crate, u put the discharge (whether poo or pee) on the newspaper and put the newspaper on the garden... and let it dried. Whenever u take him out for a walk in the garden, just go near to the newspaper and see if he'll do his business there...

But she will definetly can 'tahan' her poos/pees for quite sometimes! Today I will follow your advice to put the poos/pees on a newpaper Tongue see whetehr it works for her or not.

Thank you.

As for eating poo poo, my puppy has that kind of habit too, but after getting him the multivitamin, he dont eat the poo anymore. You just cant leave the poo there, you have to clean it up fast.
Like all the people who reply you, i guess puppies cant really tahan their output. What you have to do is you must let your puppy know which place are for sleeping and which place are for her to do her business. Usually puppies dont do their business on sleeping areas, when you have a place for them to do their business.
For toilet train, you can start with toilet train kits, which can be found in pet shop. Buy the one with drops not spray one.

Talking about the housetraining liquid. Mine is not working at all on my Tzu. I even bought 2 types. One is really smelly and another one actually you wont be able to smell the smell unless u spray near ur nose.

So what i did was to use a keyowrd and always shows him where he should do his business. Well, he is housebreak now but accident do happens sometimes. SO i forgive him for that with a stern NO. hahaha

Well, after u show him where he should do business try giving him treats and praise him like wa...SO GRAND!!! SUrely he will remember the place.

PATIENT IS ALWAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN HOUSEBREAKING!!

I will monitor until she poo only then I go to work but I do not know what happen when I am not around.

I think we cannot scold coz the more we srceam, she will eat more fastCrazy

coprophagia-eating feces....many puppies eat their own or even other dog's feces...the reasons for this vary........diet man be one of the factor,as may lack of confidence...many dogs eat eat the feces of other animals, such as horse or cow dung...it seems to be a doggie delicacy...........For the dog, it isn't...however humans find this behavior most unpleasant and certainly don't want to kiss their puppy afterward!........helath and hygiene may be compromised through this behaviour..........check to ensure that your puppy's diet suit him...try a change if you are suspicious that this may be an influence......make sure that you wait woth your puppy while he goes to the toilet and then immediately clear up the feces.......be calm and quiet about this.....some pups may resort to this behaviour if they are inadvertently rewarded by your agitation...teching your puppy a really reliable "off" and "leave"command also helps........

the most effective way is to stop this bad habit n is not clean it up. cos only we can clean it up while we saw it.......how abt we r not around?Mad

Re: [Yuki79] Eating poo poo [In reply to] Can't Post

hi yuki,
i might have a way to teach you to teach your puppy a leave/off command....you can try it..............
make sure you are somewhere calm and quiet.Hold a treat in your hand and close your finger tightly around it.
present your hand to the pup and wait while he sniff ,licks and nibbles, trying to get the food.Do not say anything
watch carefully ,as soon as your puppy take his nose away from your hand even for a split secong, click or use your clciker word, then give the treat
repeat several times
now repeat the exercise but this time wait until the pup has taken hi nose away from your hand for the count to two then click and treat
build up the amount of time that your pup will wait with his nose well away from your hand to about 10 sec.......at this point you can add in the cue word- "leave" or "off" ....in a calm ,quiet voice, not a threatening one
once your puppy repeat the exercise but this time say "off" or "leave" then present the food on your open hand...if the puppy tries to take it ,simply close your fingers around the food do not jerk your hand.....
over a period of repetitions most puppies rapidly learn that the word "off " or "leave" means that they must not touch...............and this can be extended to object on the floor ,outside and also poo poo...

Well the ppl who hv tried didn't hv any problems with the stomach....shih tzu small dog so give a bit ok don't give too much. Mix it together with her food. The best way is still to pick up her poo as soon as she does it so she won't hv the chance to eat it....you must also teach her the NO and Leave It command, as soon as u see her going near her poo, enforce these commands on her.

Go to the pet shop and get a drinking bottle where you can hang upside down with the nozzle at the bottom, the dog will drink from the nozzle and won't mess up the face so much. Sunnie seemed to have stopped this problem for the past two days, after I decided to cook her meals instead of trying all sorts of ways to make her eat her Innova kibbles. She would rather starve than eating the kibbles, even if i mix them with the home cooked food she wont eat the kibbles. For the cooked food, I steamed RM 2 of minced chicken breast, 1 carrot, 3 small potatos, 1/2 stalk of celery and 3 tablespoon of white rice with 3 tablespoon of water...and give her about 2 tablespoon of the food every meal. These two days I noticed she will just leave the poop there and won't pounce on them like before...maybe she was too hungry or lacking or nutrition or something...Just my guess.

no i cook once every 4 days...I just put the rest in the fridge and when i feed her i just scoop out 2 tbs and steam it...the rest i put back into the fridge. But sunnie is very small size...only 600 gm now so 2 tbspoon is enough for her right now...I didnt make them into cubes...just scoop out and steam...the texture is like mashed potatoes...but I also give her raw stuff such as fruits and also vit supplements so that hopefully may also help a bit. Sometime I mix with the dog food but she doesnt like it, will only eat it when she's really hungry ! The poo doesnt smell at all...its still very solid but color is like carrot hehe...and she pooed even more...like 3 or 4 times a day...right now (touch wood) she hasnt eaten the poop yet lah..but still observing !

Re: [ashley] Eating poo poo [In reply to] Can't Post

I think it depends on the brand of the kibbles. Sunnie still likes Bil Jac whenever I give it to her now, despite being fed on fresh food. It's either the Innova kibbles I'm feeding her right now is tasteless...or it contains some ingredients which will deter her from eating it. I forgot the name of the shampoo I am using but it's a herb based shampoo for cats and dogs...am thinking of switching to biogroom later...Sunnie is almost 10 weeks old.

I guess I was over confident when I said she stopped eating her poop. Because she ate again yesterday and today, when we weren't looking. If we were observing her she won't eat...Maybe it's not just the nutrition problem, but also the behaviour part...I gave her some Purina Pro Plan kibbles to try yesterday and she loved it and finished every bit...But when I mix a bit of innova kibbles into her cooked food she doesnt want to touch the food at all...Wonder what the heck they put inside innova that really deters her from eating.

Hi Phang,

I think Innova is more to vege, thats why it is not so tasty and didnt smell good to the dog....., you can read on of the post abt Innova somewhere in the forum!

When Kiddi was 3 months old, I bought her Innova but later change it coz very expensiveWink

Ya i agree is all the behaviour !Phang i think u can try to control Sunnie since she still small and u still can trian her! She dog food is tasleless but good for them, u can try to feed her or use some tactic . So u take same time to feed her ( but this will make her more manja loh!!) choice the good nutrition rather than good taste !!

Better or not is one thing, wanting to eat or not is another story ! I know of someone whose shih tzu went on strike for 3 days refused to eat Innova. Maybe Innova is more palatable for Labs, they seem to like it...whether Nous or Rex..Bonney seems to be okay with it too.

Hv u tried Eagle Pack lamb and rice? It's quite good....if your dog has sensitive skin you might want to switch to lamb and rice formula and see whether there are any improvements.

Hi Ashley,

Checkout the thread "Specific food for specific breed" in the Nutrition corner.

Accordingly, chihuahua should be fed avocado, mango, pourtry & rice. And should avoid beef, beet pulp.

Well usually the lamb and rice formula in dog food are made for dogs with sensitive skin because they stick to one meat source and they don't contain a lot of grains which are possible allergans to dogs eg. wheat and corn....most of the dog food consists of chicken as their main ingredient along with beef or fish and some dogs are allergic to chickens and for these dogs, they will opt for lamb and rice.

hi Melanie,
this is from personal experience. my female chi also ate her poo poo when she was a puppy. i have tried verbal correction, physical correction ( smack on legs ) , tabasco, pineapple, change of food, potty training, ( ie after eat, potty ), and all others that the internet / books / etc taught. all failed ( or at least i think it failed ). one day, miss ma-le woke up at about 1 year old and decided not to eat the poo poo anymore. and that was it. Me thinks that when she was young, her digestive system wasn't working so well and the poo poo that came out contained some food that had not been properly digested. when she matured ( after her 1st heat ), the poo poo probably was really poo poo, and she doesn;t touch it anymore. so dun despair and have patience.Sly

i have an unorthodox suggestion. Feed your shitzu one heavy meal, heavy enough for her to go pot pot. Immediately after dinner, let her run around a while and see if she will go pot pot. If not, u can use a q-tip lubricated with PONDS cold cream and insert just the tip into her backside. This will prompt her to go pot pot, and can pave the way for potty on demand training.

sorri for the unfinished business. when she goes poo poo, say the magic word you want. for eg, potty potty. soon, you will be able to dispense away with the q-tip and just say potty potty and she will potty on command. U can teach all your doggies to potty on command and be able to control the access to potty. I also did try to break the habit by feeding BARF. It stopped her the time she was on BARF but as the stools were white and powdery, but was not a complete solution.Crazy Eventually, it was herself that decided the poo poo was not for her. Eating its own or other dog dropping is a very dangerous habit....the dog can pick up intestinal parasites,it can also create a bacterial overgrowth condition in its intestines.Always clean up after the dog but to assist in overcoming the porblem leave a recently passed stool and taint it with Tabasco sauce.....

Yes it's especially dangerous if your dog eats some other dog's poo when u take her out for a walk...parvo virus is contaminated in dog's feces, not to mention worms and if your dog has not been properly vaccinated or dewormed, it may infect her.

something i get from the netIt's not really understood why some dogs eat their own poo. The solution is simple: clean it up before the dog has a chance to eat it. Take the dog out to poo, and pick up the poo immediately with a poo bag, rather than leaving the dog in the gardem with access to poo. Rabbit poo is considered a treat by many dogs, and doesn't appear to harm them.

There are always two sides of arguments for a lot of our canine needs frm medical to nutritional topics...it is up to the owners to use their own judgement for the betterment of their dogs....frm what i've read spaying or neutering brings a lot of medical benefits, regardless of the breed or size...also spaying will eliminate unwanted pregnancy if you happen to hv an intact male in the hse and it will help curb some aggression issues in some females. This is also true for male dogs.

I know neutered dogs are not allowed in the comformation shows so I suppose it's also the same for the females though I'm not sure how the judges will know? I mean nothing visible frm the outside is being 'cut out'....for obedience trials, spaying/neutering is not a problem.

Re: [jaz] Eating poo poo [In reply to] Can't Post

With the benefits in terms of medical in relation to spaying or neutering, yes it'll increase the lifespan of the dog....this is an article frm a website

Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

Spayed animals no longer feel the need to roam to look for a mate. The result is that they stay home and have less chance of being involved in traumatic accidents such as being hit by a car. They also have a much lower incidence of contracting contagious diseases, and get into fewer fights.

In males, neutering decreases the chances of developing prostatic disease and hernias, and eliminates the chances of developing testicular cancer. It also reduces problems with territorial and sexual aggression, inappropriate urination (spraying) and other undesirable male behaviors.

In Females, spaying decreases the incidence of breast cancer (the rate goes down to almost zero if the spaying is done before the first heat cycle!). It eliminates the chance of developing a serious and potentially fatal infection of the uterus experienced by many mature unspayed animals (pyometra). Spay surgery also eliminates the heat cycle and associated mood swings and undesirable behaviors, messy spotting (in dogs) and the attraction of all available males to your yard.

The simple fact is that spaying and neutering greatly increases the lifespan of your pet and increases quality of life as well!

Hi

I know its pretty common for puppies to eat their own poo- poo but I still think its rather disgusting*lol*

My Cody is 9 weeks and he thankfully..*crosses fingers* stopped eating his poo. Scott used to watch him closely whenever he poo and making sure he will not eat or sniff his poo after he passed his motion. Even if he is left at home alone, he usually will leave his unattended poo alone.

I remember one time when he was sniffing and playing with his poo, Scott startled him so much he ended up swallowing it...Euww..lol

Hi Scot_Sheila,

After all the year having kiddi, I think boredom is the main problem to cause her eating her poo!

I notice that whenever we are not around and she have nothing to do, she will try playing with it.

What we can do is to clean up after them faster before they have the change to play or eat it.

Hi, I noticed my dog had a poo-poo eating problem too but the vet said that it was because she was not suffciently dewormed. So, deworming was done again and now she is fine. But again there may be many reasons to why pups do that. If the dog is an adult, it is time for the owner to start worrying.
