Rashes and Puss Can't Post

My 2 Maltese seems to have rashes and puss on their body. I hear that it usually happens if the dogs licks the area too much. But right now ... the funny thing is, it happens on the area where they can't even reach...

I've already clean it with Savlon. They are better now but I'm curious as to why this happened.

Any advise?

Hi there,

I am not sure what puss is.. but lately I've discovered small small bumps on Jaz's skin, especially around her neck.. It's not really pimple, but it's definately not something I want to see Frown.. when you try to scrap it off, it actually turns flacky.. I am not sure what causes this.. but how do I get rid of it??? and prevent it from happening again in future??

My dogs has something that looks like mosquito bites but it's not. And sometimes they get puss on their body. Hokkien call "Na...Na..." Understand, ah?

And this all will turn very dry and make their skin look a bit horrible. So I've been putting Savlon and now going to try a new method. Bath them with Savlon solution ... referring to the post "Dettol ..." something ... Can't remember ...

Ok ... then looks like we're having de same prob. To clear that off, I wipe it with Savlon solution and then apply some Savlon antiseptic cream. It really works but what comes after that is ... it'll be dry ... something like flaky skin as you mention but it's not dandruff. .. so I'm going to put some Baby lotion but not sure if it'll work..

Hi Sweeng,

My Ruffie just came over this problem. This is very common for all the puppies.

My vet said why the puppies will get this "Na Na" is because they play or sleep at dirty place or on the glass. Or may be because the weather, too hot...all these will cause the pusses come out. But, don't put baby lotion on it, it will become worst... (Vet said this to me). You can request your vet to give you the medicine.

Anyway, use clean tower to rub your doggies everytime when they come in the house and let them drink more water.

Jaz,

Last time my Ruffie used to have very large puss, around 1.5 cm big... so disgusting and it was in green color. I tried to brush them off..as what you did now.. and the next day, another one puss came out beside the old puss.

I don't think it is good to brush them off. Just let the pusses burst itself and you should wipe your puppy body everyday and put some medicine on it. (request from vet).

Although Ruffie gone thru that "hard time", his skin still quite fine, no flackly dead skins.

I changed his shampoo, fed him Lamb & Rice, gave him Nutricoat & Cod liver Oil plus other supplements......and also constant brushing. Now improving Smile

My doggies don't go out. They're always in the kitchen and my maid mops the kitchen twice a day. It can't be the weather too cos they've been there for 1 years plus oredi... So still can't figure out what's wrong.

Anyway, when there's a puss, i'll use the Savlon solution to clean it. The puss will come out and the skin will recover... of course with the flaky thing. The vet says that it's recovering, lor...

Tried bathing 1 dog with the savlon solution... her skin looks better ... but need to continue... i guess..

Re: [sweeeng] Rashes and Puss [In reply to] Can't Post

can i ask when u say bath the dog with the solution, how many times u bath him a week?

i have a 5 mths golden retriever pup, jus bought abt 2mths ago. he was imported from australia.. about 3wks after i bought him, he developed rashes all over his body, especially his neck and tummy. but the vet jus gave me antibiotics and say might be due to hot weather as it was winter that time and he was not use to the warm weather here. the rashes did went off but after a week plus later, his rashes came back. the rashes was spotted around his armpit and in between his legs. i have tried applying savlon antiseptic cream around the area and improvement is seen at the armpit, but, in between the legs is not so good..

i've seen his biting his legs and tail as well... could it be that he is allergy to the food i gave? cos i have read some article that if the dog is allergy to wheat, corn or soy bean, they will bite their legs and tail.. i have stop him from eating food with wheat and he did not bite his tail anymore, biting his legs now because there is a few rashes over there.. though i have stop giving food with wheat, the rashes is still there...

pls help... really dun know wad to do man...

well try reading the mange postings. there are 2 types of mange....sarcoptic (which spreads) and demodectic (which doesn't). get your vets to so some skin scraping.

allergies are rare. mange is very common. antibiotics is not the answer to both afflictions and neither is savlon.

Re: [captain03] Rashes and Puss [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ... Smile ...

Many vets prescribe a course of antibiotics and/or cortisone when treating a dog with a skin condition ... what is unfortunate however is that some vets do not attempt a clearer diagnosis or provide the owner with clear or sufficient explanation of the "cause" or "possible causes" of the condition ...

Some vets do not bother to explain the long-term effects of antibiotics or cortisone ... on our dogs.

The antibiotic is intended to prevent or reduce secondary bacterial infection caused by the skin condition and/or a scratching dog ... The cortisone is a powerful anti inflammatory steroid intended to combat "Allergic Dermatitis", namely allergies of the skin.

Unfortunately, such treatment assist to elevate symptoms but often does not remove the cause of the condition.

Hence, frequently - when the antibiotic or cortisone treatment period is over ... the skin condition reappears ...

It is therefore very important to find a vet who is prepared to spend time examining your dog and speaking with you. Just giving antibiotics or cortisone is not necessarily the only or best solution.

A dog with bad skin is giving warning that something is not right ...

Dermatitis comes in various forms and can be caused by a whole range of possibilities.

You are right, rashes and poor skin condition can be caused by certain foods ...

But it may also be caused by other factors too ... It may be something as simple as a heat rash ... or maybe caused by a food allergy, or allergy to the dog shampoo, or the detergents used on your floor, airborne contaminants, bacterial, fungal or yeast infections ... or some form of parasitic infection (tick bites or mange etc) ... or a combination of causes ...

The symptoms can range from mild rashes to open sores, from mild to severe itching and coat loss.

Treating a skin condition often requires a process of eliminating possible causes.

I would suggest the following Smile ...

*** Speak to your breeder in Australia and find out the food that the puppy was fed. A responsible breeder will be more than happy to provide all the information you require. If the food fed in Australia caused no problems - then perhaps duplicate that diet here ... In the meantime research proper dog nutrition.

*** If there are no pus pistules ... make a salt water solution - 1 or 2 teaspoon of sea-salt in a pint of warm water ... Soak a towel in the salt solution and wipe your dog ... You can do this 2 or 3 times a day ... the salt solution is mildly antiseptic and will help keep the rashes clean and reduce itching.

Hopefully the above will stabilise your dog's condition somewhat ... giving you time to find a good vet ...

A good vet will have many questions for you - questions about your dog's diet, the environment in which your dog lives etc ... A good vet will also consider doing a blood test, skin scrapings for examination under a microscope or for a culture ... A good vet will also patiently answer all the questions you may have …

Please check the thread begun by cshellz on "mange":

www.puppy.com.my/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=53683;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;

... the thread offers many suggestions re: nutrition & homeopathic solutions for skin relief.

Cheers Smile

Hello ... Smile ...

So sorry to hear about your doggie's skin condition.

I assume that you have described all you wrote in your post to your vet ... Please remember - you must provide your vet with all relevant information ... if you don't, then you hamper your vet's attempt to diagnose.

As far as I know ... having recurring skin condition is not normal for any dog ... having pustules or red rash all over its body on a recurring basis is also not normal for a dog ... I would therefore be very cautious about any vet who dismisses such symptoms as being normal.

It is also very difficult (if not impossible) to try and identify causes of dermatitis (skin condition) over this forum.

Please reading the postings above and the postings under mange.

Please take your dog to a good vet who is able to provide proper advice and treatment. If you wish, you can email me at surchinmy@yahoo.com

Good luck.

Re: [surchinmy] Rashes and Puss [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi,

Surchinmy is right. My godson has the same problem (no puss except when he scratch but a lot of dry dead skin) n the vet told me that he has yeast. So, he suggest that I give him a bath every 3 days with Malaseb shampoo (soaked for an hour then rinse off) n then wash with vineger (mix with water). Don't rinse off after that, wipe n blow dry. If not, use the shampoo once a week n spray the vineger mix every 3 days, wipe n blow dry after that. I'm doing it this week n my godson seem to have a good night sleep after that (not much of scratching). According to the vet, the vineger helps to control the yeast growth.

He also suggest that my godson needs sunshine (between 9am to 11am). Will be giving him the vineger spray this Wed n a bath (the whole procedure) this Sat b4 he gets his booster jab (didn't get it last Sat cos vet settle his skin problem 1st). Will keep u guys updated.

Cheers,

You wrote: "... before i done some research b4 i bought this retreiver. i have found that skin disorder is commonly found on golden retriever. can someone describe how it looks like? does it look like rashes? cos i am afraid that my goldie is suffering from skin disorder ..."

I think you are asking whether your puppy is suffering from a "specific" type of skin infection or disorder that particularly affects Goldens ...

If I am not mistaken ... some experts believe that Goldens are succeptable to "skin allergies" ... But this is just a very general caution warning that Goldens may be predisposed to skin allergies ... Unfortunately, skin allegies come in so many forms.

As best as I know, Goldens are not predisposed to any one "specific" form of allegy or a "particular" type of skin disorder that reveals itself with a "particular" set of symptoms ...

Because your Golden may be predisposed to skin allergies ... the rash may be the result of some form of allergy - but then again it may not ... Unsure ...

All we can say is that the recurring rashes is an indication that something is wrong ... It is however impossible via this forum to attempt any more precise diagnosis of what may be cause of the rashes ... there are just too many possibilities.

As mentioned in my earlier posting ... you really need to find a good vet ... one who is prepared to carry out a proper and systematic examination of your pup and answer your queries ...

Perhaps if you tell us the area where you live - forum members can assist with recommending a good vet ...

I agree with Houyee - (and you are yourself discovering this) simply applying antiseptic cream is not the solution ...

Cheers

Hello ... Smile ...

Just a few suggestions, if I may:

(a) Exposing your doggie to sunlight is a very good idea because dogs require sunlight to synthesis Vitamin D ... but maybe early morning sun is good ... it can get pretty hot by 11am ...

(b) Please check the directions on your bottle of Malaseb ... I believe that the recommended soaking time is only "10 minutes" and not 1 hour ... Malaseb is quite a strong medicated shampoo ...

Cheers ... and all the best with your dog ... Smile

Hi,

Yes, did read the directions/instructions on the bottle n have tried it (leave it for 10 mins) but didn't seem that effective as suggested by vet. Oh ya, forgot to mention yesterday (was rushing to go home), the shampoo has to mix with water (guess that's alright to soaked for an hour). Actually I soaked my godson for only about half an hour (I had to stay in the bathroom with him n get some free sauna!!!) hehehe...

Will try the sunlight this weekend n get some tan myself too (as always, have to sunbathing with him; if not he will go to the shade).

Thanks for the suggestions/concern.

Hi, My little Elmo-Golden Retrievers (3 mths old) has the same problems as many of you described for your dogs. He has many red spots around his neck, armpits, inner thighs and belly areas. And the spots developed into pus. His belly now looks very dry and dark and many of you as recommended many ways to cure it and I think I will try to use the vinegar and water methods next. Right now, last night I just started to use the spray-medication I bought..it's called "anifumex". I bought it at Giant supermarket. Hmm... any better ways to cure it other than using the vinegar and water? And any good reccommended Vets in Johor that you know? I live in Kulai (close to Senai and Skudai), which any good Vets you know in Southern Johor will be good for me.

My Elmo normally is kept in the bathroom at night , like after 11pm(after dinner and some exercises) The bathroom has tile floor and it's being washed every morning, using some kind of Cosway's floor detergent and then dettol solutions. The floor will normally gets dried by night and Elmo will sleep in there. But sometimes the floor might not get very dry and maybe still a bit wet. Elmo also likes to play on the grass, lying on the grass eventhough the grass is wet. Could the rashes caused by that?

ohh, one more thing, I'm afraid if it could be because of cockroaches? Because those disgusting cockroaches sometimes appeared at night in the bathroom..Frown

Please, please, any information given will be very much appreciated! Thanks!
Elmo

Re: [laurentia] Rashes and Puss [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello ... Smile

*Hmmm* ... Have not heard of "Anifumex" before ...

It's always a good idea to check the list of ingredients before using any product; and make sure that the product is safe/suitable for your doggie ... Unfortunately there are some commercial preparations that may cause more harm than good ... Not all products are equal and not all are suitable or safe ...

You write: "... Elmo will sleep in there. But sometimes the floor might not get very dry and maybe still a bit wet. Elmo also likes to play on the grass, lying on the grass eventhough the grass is wet. Could the rashes caused by that?..."

Yes, the residual from floor shampoos/washes can cause a skin reaction in dogs ... so, can bites from the insects & parasites in grass ... but without proper examination - it's not possible to say what is causing Elmo's condition ...

I don't think cockroaches can by themselves cause rashes on dogs ... but cockroaches do carry bacteria which might affect the dog ... but really I don't know ... Unsure

The presence of pustules indicates that some infection of the skin has set in ... the dark patches may be indicative of some allergic reaction ... now is perhaps not the time for home remedies.

It does sound like Elmo has a reasonably serious condition ... Please get your doggie to a good vet ...

Extract from a previous thread:

I will suggest that you take your pup to a good vet ... and let the vet examine your doggie (take skin scrapings, blood test etc). As previously mentioned ... rashes and pustules can be caused by so many things ...

It is therefore very important to find a vet who is prepared to spend time examining your dog and speaking with you. Just giving antibiotics or cortisone is not necessarily the only or best solution.
