Hi there... I have a Husky and has been living with the dog for almost a year. Here's a few points to ponder before you engage on getting one :

1. Huskies are high-energy dogs. They love to run and I mean RUN!

2. They need to be excercised twice daily.

3. When space is concerned, a yard with a set of strong fence is highly recommended.

4. Huskies are "escape artists" - so, if ya don't work them down i.e. - excercise, they will dig and bite off your fence and make a run for it.

5. Huskies are not recommended for "off leash" outings.

6. They shed a lot. So, if you have a carpeted home, plenty of vacuuming work and their fur has to be brushed regularly.

7. They love to dig!

8. Being energetic dogs, Huskies tend to get bored easily.

9. Depending on how much you socialise your pooch, Huskies don't love to mingle...

10. They are highly intelligent and well, once you've trained them, very loyal.

If you are serious - check of the "classified" section where Husky pups are being sold by responsible breeders..

Re: [wslee1201] Anyone with Siberian Huskey?? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi hi.... i have a husky too. mine is 5 months old (tomorrow - officially). she is a RASCAL! i totally agree with what Samo said in his advices. although, i beg to differ on 1 point. huskies are highly socialable pets; they are super friendly. huskies that do not mingle or do not like the presense of other dogs, has a problem. and must be treated immediately.

they live in a pack, and they love to live in a pack. if they do not live with other dogs, then they will consider humans as their pack. this is noticable when the dominant female or male dogs do not allow anybody to pat their heads. then extra attention and extra training must be given in order to let the alpha male or alpha female knows who is boss in the house.

Kosmos has this problem. she trots around the house and she does not like us patting her head. she will get annoyed and bite. now, we have to be extra firm and strict with her so to let her know who is boss in the house. we are STILL trying to teach her who's boss. some season husky owners told me that it could take up to a year before the bow down to us. we just have to be patience.

yes, they love to run. running with SPEED is what they are born to do in the first place. i jog with Kosmos, and half the time i'm running - she's jogging. when she's running, she thinks she's pulling a sled (a.k.a. me). their endurance is second to none. she can play and run around for hours, and still not tired out. sometimes, i really feel like mixing some whisky in her drink so that she'll sleep.

they do not like to bark. not that they don't bark, but they do not like to bark. a constantly barking habit is considered bad with huskies. when Kosmos barks, she wants something; attention, one of her toys, or simply because we're not chit-chatting with her and she's jealous. they prefer howling. but the problem also is... if they're not mixed with her own breed, they will forget how to howl. i am worried now that Kosmos has only howled ONCE in the 2.5 months that she's with us.

they perspire through their tongues - like any other dogs. you need to keep them in the cool. and they need ALOT of water. we put Kosmos in a 24/7 air-conditioned room. have lots of water for her. and we change her water twice daily so that she'll get fresh water. their food intake is also slightly different from other breeds. they eat very little. and i mean, very very little. if your normal dogs eat 8oz-twice-a-day, huskies eat 1/2 that amount. and they are notorious for not eating for days (that's why you must have fresh water for them, and lots of it). u cannot gauge when they will decide not to eat. it's not like there's a sign or something. they can play and be so excited until they "forgot" to eat. Kosmos refuse to eat because she wants to play. we believe this is because she's too lonely in the house alone. that's why we have decided to bring home a little sister to accompany her.

huskies have a mind of their own. unlike many other breeds, huskies think before they do certain things. they are loyal - yes. but obedient? sometimes. depends. listening to every command? sometimes. depends. it can frustrating sometimes, but this is one of the little things that you have to live with. if you already have other pets and they are that obedient, then you might want to re-consider keeping a husky.

i think i ranted too much. i can go on forever i guess... Sly

why don't you ask the questions... and see anyone of us here can help you.

Re: [wslee1201] Anyone with Siberian Huskey?? [In reply to] Can't Post

oh... now baru i realised... all we've really answered is ONE of your many questions.

let me see if i can help with the rest.

1) Do they need to exercise regularly?
YES! They need to let of steam (energy). ALOT of exercise is needed. One thing is, fortunately, we have our weather with us. In colder countries, they need at least heavy exercises 2 - 4 hours daily. Here, thanks to our weather, they get tired sooner than their cousins in their colder countries. Walk them (or jog or run with them) for at least 1 hour in the morning, and 1 hour in the evening. Try not to exercise them in the hot sun. They'll faint (I think!). Hehehhehehehehhe....
We walk Kosmos for at least 1.5 hours every evening. Because we have to go to work early, morning walks are only on weekends and off-days and Public Holidays.

2) To maintain this type of dog, does it cost a lot?
Depends. On what? On your wallet. There are people who gives their pets "just enough", there are "abusers" out there as well, but there are also those of us who will spend like nobody's business. If you want the best for your pets, then you tend to buy the best for them. And the best do not always come cheap.

3) When buy Siberian Husky, must buy with a pair?
Depends. Like what I said in my earlier post, they love to live in packs. Their ancestors live in packs of 15 - 20 dogs. If they're not living with other dogs (yes, they can live with other breeds), then they tend to treat humans as their pack. You can tell that they are lonely sometimes. This is when when you reach home, they whine at you for not hugging them the very moment you open that door. In your case, since you already have a GR, then I guess bringing up a Husky-pup together with your GR is ok.

There you go... hope this help.

hehhehehe... yes... i do... if the nights are cool enough, then the air-cond will be switched off. but other than that, it's air-conditioned.

i don't mean to pour cold-water on you, but if you can't give a husky at least enough exercise, then i would suggest that you don't keep a husky. and even a GR needs exercise, it's a real pity that you can't exercise your baby.

Hey FiletOfish.. Great reply to this thread..

In that mingling with other dog statement, if I may add -- socialising a Husky is a must from the day it comes to your home as a pup.. Having an Alpha male, I must say that I am working very hard to socialise my pooch with others.. He's a handful when it comes mingling with other dogs.. But with people, he's very comfy.. And yeah, takes a while to let the Husky settle in before people could pat their head.. Naughty-boy actually likes all the attention.. I'm thinking of expanding the family to two dogs.. So far, no luck in locating a female Husky.. But I guess I should be able to resolve that soon.. Oh yeah, last but not least : Huskies got no "doggy smell", truly a bonus if you can't stand the stink..

Naughty-boy loves meeting people... and we're working on his dominance issues with other pooches..

Hi Samo... YES!!! THE SMELL!! totally forgot about that part. that's the thing that slipped right out of my mind.

i think Kosmos is an Alpha female too. i mean, i've gotta tell u my stories then u tell me if she's alpha or beta.

1) she won't let us pat her head. Crazy
2) she loves to play with other dogs, but when they play, she always want to press them down (neighbour's not to happy about that). Sly
3) yesterday, she was like a helpless kitten with all the dogs around.

what are the other symptoms that we should look out for to determine if they are alphas or not? do you know?

Showing signs of sheer dominance with other dogs is a sign.. Well, last month, Naughty-boy was mated with a 2-year-old female by the name of Mandy and the trainer who owns her told me that our pooch has been living alone for too long and being a typical male, they tend to show agression at first contact. Thankfully, after the backside sniffing session, my boy had finally mated after his third attempt.. Frown That much I can say about the Alpha male complex with my doggie.. I think the experts here can shed more light on this..

For a high-energy and constantly active dog such as the Husky, excercise is priority! I you cage em up or confine them in a tight space, that'll lead to plenty of problems. Obesity is one and boredom may just aggravate its destructive habit...

I walk my dog twice daily and would normally take him for a 1km loop around my housing estate. Thankfully, we live a gated neighbourhood and the parameter is fenced, so, if there is a likely chance for my boy to escape, he can't go far... So far, I don't have any problems acclimatising the pooch cos he's locally born and you'll notice the absense of his winter double-coat.. But the persistant and nagging problem is the constant shedding.. So, you've got to brush your Husky at least twice weekly to keep his healthy coat..

As for digging, I have a garden and a sizeable yard. So, the dog does have some buried "stash" that he keeps for the rainy days.. Purty normal and the habit can be broken if you ask. me. I spent a lot of time gate-training my pooch so that he won't dash out of the house. And crate-training helps.. Each time I go to work, I will command him to : "Get in your crate" and he'll obediently do so.. So, before you take the plunge, think carefully cos a happy dog is the result of responsible owner..

We "cool off" and chill out a lot during our quality time together..

Excercise is goooood!!! Here's Mrs Samo and her pooch at the Bukit Gasing in Petaling Jaya..

well.. it's not a must... it's up to individuals. Kosmos is local born as well, but we prefer her to be air-conditioned. it may make a difference as in her coat is thicker and longer. ok, maybe it's in her genes that she has thicker coat, and maybe it's due to the food that she takes. but really... it's up to each individual.

like you said... if can do so, why not? Wink

Hey, thanks for your kind words Lee! Unless you have a real big yard, like a few acres of fenced area like a ranch, I think your space issue is addressed laaa.. Bottom-line is working down the dog and working hard.. I know for a fact that if my boy is satisfied with his walk, he will settle down nicely at the living room.. As a rule of thumb, working dogs needs plenty of excercise.. If not, they'll become very "edgy". Every morning and evenings, my dog will snuggle up to me and raise his paw and scratch my thigh, a sign that he needs his walk.. Speaking of health, like any other purebreed, extra care is needed on the dog's diet. I recommend dry-food and if you can pay for quality feed, your Huskie's nutritional requirements are covered. Just don't overfeed the dog and make it a habit to give "snacks" from your dining table... I send my pup for his check up regularly and put him on heartworm tablets, well, next year, it will be a annual anti-heartworm jab... Take good care of your Husky and it'll take good care of you..

Re: [wslee1201] Anyone with Siberian Huskey?? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi Lee... huskies NEED alot of attention. if your Grandma won't let your dogs in the house, erm... i would suggest you not to keep a husky.

alot of ppl say that it's ok to keep out in the sun because since they are born here, they shld be acclimatised to our weather. we always forget, they are bred to have thick coats. they are supposed to have lots of hair and thick coat. they are bred to be a working dog - which translates to lots of energy burning activities. they need their walk. me & my fiance are starting to run with her. and yes, like Naughty-boy, when she gets enough exercise, Kosmos will lay low at her favourite spot and rest. she'll be a freaking good girl that day.

running around the house, ok lar... if the run non-stop for an hour lor. but then again, huskies get bored really fast. they are not like our pet gold-fish (8-seconds memory span), swim 1 round in the bowl damn happy already. running IN the house? erm... if you're ok with them breaking things accidentally lor.

i would suggest you do some more researches on the web before you decide to bring home a husky. try to research them off European countries or the States. read about different opinions. and if i remember correctly, there's a questionnaire somewhere which you can take to see if you are ready to bring home a husky pup.

different ppl have different opinions on how they want to keep their pets. you've gotta find one that's you.

good luck!

just to share with u...a cheeky breed like husky...ALL will try to challenge the alpha situation...alpha is 80% not in born...it's cultivated...see if u or she wins the battle...if one is a softy owner...even a beta will become domineering...

i have a female as well...hoping she will be less domineering but hey...i realise i am playing rotery here...

just to share my own experience...i don't have a big yard and yes, i do exercise her twice a day...i do admit sumtimes i get a little lazy...so what i do is play fetch with her when i watch tv...get her fav ball, throw in down the stairs many many times...she tires herself..and we both watch tv together...hehehe...a tired husky is a lovable husky... kekekkee

my girl also like to press other dogs down when she plays...she's also 5 mths old...she's a big bully to other pups n gentle giants...

i do fully agree with Samo that they are not very friendly w other dogs...my girl is still very friendly coz she's a pup n still very playful...but when they grow up..it's a diff case...my neighbours have adult huskies...they're not good when an adult is introduced to another adult...especially the same sex....it may be ok if the husky is the pup...introduced to adult dogs...but not the other way around....

oh...i can go on and on and on....F-O-F...u wun wan them to howl...my heart always breaks when my girl howls...she only does that..in the begining...when i go out of sight....its as though she's lost and crying coz she doesn't wana be alone...and howling to see if her fellow mates howls back...or maybe she's expecting ME to howl back to tell her where i am....but she's ok now...she a happy chubby cheeky baby....can't wait to go home n see her now...tata...lets get this husky chats going man!!!!

Yep, that's what I am talking about.. If your dog lives with you all the time and has no time to mingle with others, chances are : you will end up with a dominant pooch. And with that -- aggression sets in. Takes plenty of effort to socialise a Husky and once you have hit the jackpot, your dog is the friendliest creature on Earth.. *heh-heh!* Hey Megan, aren't the owner who paraded with her Husky at the RDO Day? I love the markings and colour of yer pooch..

Kosmos is not the agressive type. she just want to be the boss at home. which is what we are controlling right now. she loves other dogs. even the 3 strays outside our place, she wants to play with them. she has many friends around the neighbourhood now.

but... she's going through this fear-everything-phase right now. we bought this book from Lorna Winslette which tells that now, she will take flight at any frightening sound & she will whine when in pain. anything new Kosmos see right now, she freaks out. any new sounds (like the garbage truck or the school buses pass by) she freaks out. she used to love mingle with other dogs. if the dogs are angry and starts barking, she'll just sit down and stare at them (like, "why are you so mad? crazy!). now, she FLIES OFF! *sigh* time and time again, we have re-assure her that everything's ok, and that we're around her so she doesn't have to be so scared.

we took her out just the other day, and she freaked out when a mini pinscher started to bark at her. she pulled me running along her until we reached home.

we're hoping that this go away soon.

Aaaaahhh.. Signs of an Alpha Gurl.. Anyways, my trainer friend told me that if a dog is the sole pet at home and gets spoilt all the time, it'll become very dominant. Harder to fit in the picture when it grows up..

Naughty-boy, on the other-hand, is a busy-body. He's curious enough to hangout in our kitchen, watch us cook and lounge around the dining hall when we eat. We curbed his habit of begging and stealing. Yeah, Mrs Samo was really pissed off when her Naughty-boy had slurped up all her herbal soup. After spending a night in the crate without any attention, he got the message...

Another thing that gets him going is the roti-man, ice-cream peddlar and surat-khabar lama man... He howls like a hound out of hell when these guys passes by.. We got used to that and well, are very grateful of the "early warning system" in our midst..
