I'm not writing this thread to spark any racism issue. I have nothing against the Malays but what happened to me and BB yesterday evening angers me more than anything.

I took BB out for his evening walk around Taman Ibu Kota (Setapak Garden) housing area. I went there a few times but normally on weekends in the morning with my boyfriend.

I stay in a condominium, so i don't have the privilege to play with BB in an open area by my condo, that's one reason why i drive out to Taman Ibu Kota to walk my BB around the neighbourhood.

I was walking BB quietly, making sure he doesn't pick up anything to eat, watching his every movement, just like our usual walking session. We were walking away from the Malay kids, the playground, Malays houses, Malays cars, etc.

WE KEPT OUR DISTANCE FROM THE MALAYS TO RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY.

But to my horror, their Malays kids start to ride their bikes towards us, shouting "ANJING, ANJING", making whistling noise, showing faces, giving me the "F$%^" look.

I was shocked, Bobby was naive thinking the Malays kids wanted to play with him, try to run up to them. I had to use my full energy to refrain BB from running towards them.

I had to shout to the Malays kids to stopped shouting loudly, they didn't listen to me at all. They continue to shout "ANJING, ANJING, LARI, TAKUT, ANJING NAK GIGIT!!!"

Bobby was turning frantic. He got too excited with all the shouting. I tried to walked away from the Malays kids, but they kept on following us with their bikes. Some even walked up to me on their foot and then run away tempting BB to follow them in the run.

BB misunderstood the whole scenario, cos i normally jogs with him during his walk. When he sees the Malays kids run, he thought he's suppose to follow their "jogging" as well.

BB never behave like that when i take him out for his walk. It upsets me so much that I had to carry him back to my car and drove back to my condominium.

I was not angry at BB for behaving like that. I know he's a friendly pup, only 4 months English Cocker Spaniel. I couldn't believe my ears when i heard the Malays mums SHOUTED "JANGAN KACAU ANJING DIA, NANTI ANJING DIA GIGIT AWAK!".

They should educate their kids not to provoke any dogs, not based on "anjing dia gigit awak", but should educate their kids not to run after dogs, teasing them, making noises, shouting loudly. Dogs do not attack human unless they feel threatened.

I questions myself after what happened yesterday. I wonder whether it was my fault for taking BB out to Taman Ibu Kota for his walk.

I'm aware that there are Chinese and Indians staying in that neighbourhood with dogs. I met up some of the dog owner during their weekends morning walks. I had never encounter anything like yesterday.

Maybe it was my fault for assuming that the area is safe to bring my BB out for walks. I never knew the Malays there are psycho to run after dogs and shouting madly.

I'm writing this to share my experience. I do hope to bring BB to a safe place for his walk. No more "attacks" by the Malays.

Madmoz,

I agree with your statement. As I've said earlier in my thread that I have nothing against Malays.

FYI, my bro in law is a Malay, my elder sister has converted to Muslim. I have a niece, 2 stepbrothers and 2 best friends who are Malays (Muslim).

If my thread made you think that I'm generalizing the whole Malay population, well, I'm sorry.

I've started this thread because I want to let out my feelings. I was scared yesterday, I had no one to defend me n BB. It was unfair for BB and I to be treated in such way by the Malay kids.

We respected their privacy, kept our distance from them. It was they who came forward to disturb us.

I do not know what perception I should perceive from the action of those Malay kids. From what I can see and feel is Malay need to be educated that ANJING is not a dangerous animal.

And if they continue to do what they did to me and BB yesterday, some day one of them are bound to be attack by a dog. And when this happen, who gets the blame? The dog owner and the dog, of course.

Think about it. Not trying to start any racism here. Just something for everyone to think of when they are being blamed for things that happen out of their control.

I think the Malay need more islamic education on DOGS! As my Malay teacher told me, they can touch dog, just don't touch the dog's nose and saliva. If they hit dog just for fun or anything, it's sinful! I have some Malay friends who own dogs and they love dogs...even my Arabian friends also love my dogs. Errm...I think local Malay should refer back to their Al'Quaran or something...Nabi stated that dont touch dog nose and saliva, because that time there was mad dog disease. So, maybe the act smart people misinterpret the real meaning. Unimpressed

I've read the "Dog in Islam" article published in puppy.com. But sad to say, the local Islam have a different point of view about dog in Islam.

The Islam in our country belongs to the Mazhab Shafie which has a different understanding about dog. Mazhab Shiite accept the dog as fellow companion, but Mazhab Shafie does not condone dog as pet.

When I ask my Malay frens about dog in Islam, some give positive answers, but majority think ANJING ADALAH HARAM. I too have Malays frens who own dogs in their home.

What I can see now in Malaysia is dogs are haram everywhere. Regardless how you want to prove to them that our dogs are well behaved, in the end is still back to square one.

When i went to Genting Permai to stay 3D/2N, I had no problems with the Malays there. I was free to bring my BB for his morning and afternoon walks around the resort. The staff there respected me and BB because they know BB is harmless and they saw me picking up BB's poo to keep their cleanliness.

But when I'm back in the city, KL, everything is different. No matter how i try to convince other people that BB is harmless, well behaved, we are clean (I clear BB's poo at all time), etc... CERTAIN PEOPLE still see BB as dirty/haram, etc....

I am saving money now with my bf to buy a landed property within dog friendly neighbourhood. It's not easy task, but we are being careful in selecting the next home for BB and our future furkids (I plan to adopt more dogs).

This thread is just a way for me to let out my frustration. Some people might think I over react to what happened to me n BB yesterday. But honestly speaking, I have never seen such mob in my life.

Hahahah! My sister-in-law is a Malay too! My uncle converted and 'kena sunat'! It was so funny cause he had to wear a sarong for a whole week!

Don't worry, I didn't find your post offensive or anything, but I wanted to remind some of the members here that we live in a country where balance is everything (... rambles about being patritic blah blah blah), hence the need to be more reserved when making comments. Laugh

I love malay food, especially nasi lemak - so to all of you out there - BEHAVE! I don't want to be stuck in a situation where the only food available is chinese...

When I was younger, one of my Muslim friends told me why dogs are 'haram'. As in the bible, there too was a noah's ark in the Quran. Only difference was that there wasn't a pair of pigs and dogs. When the flood finally subsided, I believe it was the elephant that gave birth to a pair of pigs and a pair of dogs (or was it one each)?. The newlyborns promptly ate up the mess left behind by the flood (the dead carcasses, the mud etc) and were hence deemed 'unclean'.

Is this the real reason why dogs are 'haram'? Haven't got round to asking my uncle, so maybe we can ask our Muslim friends?

Well, at least it's cleared that I am not trying to spark any racism here.

I heard about the Noah's Ark story also, minus the part where elephant gave birth to the pigs and dogs, and the mess they ate after that

Currently there is two version of why dogs are consider "unclean"

1. During Nabi Muhammad time, there were mad dog disease - dogs are deemed "unclean" - refer to article "Dog in Islam" published in puppy.com

2. Noah's Ark - pigs and dogs did not enter the ark along with the other animals, once left out, consider "unclean"

It's a good idea - I'll go home and ask my bro in law why dogs are consider "unclean". Hopefully he can explain better from an Islamic view.

P/S: I love nasi lemak also , rendang ayam, ikan keli masak sambal cili padi

I had the similar problem too. I stay in Taman Ibu Kota and when I bring my dogs for walks, I get the similar stuff. The kids are bold, they even came up to my gate and threw rocks into my house. Why? They wanted to tease my dogs. Once, a group of young Malay kids came up to my gate and fences with sticks and poked my dogs. NOt only that, they threw so many rubbish into my house.

Sometimes these kids are accompanied by their parents and I was so shock to see the parent laughing when their kids tease my dogs. Many times I have raised my voice and so has my dad. All fall on deaf ears. Luckily, none of my dogs were hurt from the stones and luckily nothing was broken. The stones that they threw almost hit the car many times.

Seriously? I thought it was one off incident. I had no idea this happened to dog owners who stay in Tmn Ibu Kota.

Which part is your housing area? Is it near to the playground? I don't plan to bring BB there for evening walk anymore. It's too dangerous la. Don't want BB to get hurt.

So nowadays where do you take your dogs for their walks? You are still staying in that housing area?

I won't consider buying any landed house at Tmn Ibu Kota. It's not dog friendly at all.

The other day I saw two young kids walking their dogs (Min Pin & unidentified breed). I hope those kids are safe walking their dogs.

Now BB just stay home and play with me in the condo. Sometimes if the weather permits, and no crowd at my condo parking, I'll bring BB down for a walk around my condo (but have to be careful lor).

Still saving money to buy a landed house within dog friendly neighbourhood

I've been staying in Taman Ibu Kota for the past 17 year liao...I rarely walk my dogs now. The best time to walk your dog is late in the evening, when all the kids are at home having their dinner. Like 7pm onwards. The kids with the pincher and the mixbreed are ok, I see them walk around the housing area. I learn that if you walk in housing areas, better, less disturbance... walk near the park and it's crazy.

These days, many dog owners are taking their dogs out after 7pm. Or early in the mornings are the best times. When I walk my dogs, the kids stay away from me but tease my dog from a far... shout loudly and stuff. My dogs are boxers and a lab so the size scares them a bit.

Taman Ibu Kota used to be dog friendly, until kids with no manners and no respect for others started to run about. Not safe anymore...

Well, I guess I'll bring BB out for his morning walks on weekends only, since I can't make it after 7pm.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I had no idea such kids exists in Tmn Ibu Kota.

Maybe one of these days during BB's walk, I hope to bump into you. It's always nice to have other dog owners to chat with during walks. It's also good for our furkids to socialize.

Will keep my eyes open for boxers and a lab during my walks in future

My boxers rarely get to socialise coz people think my dogs are attack dogs but hey are infact big clowns and get excited easily. My lab is ok with other dogs, slightly shy.. yah, it'll be nice to have a good chat with you.

Yah, weekends is better. I too walk my dogs during weekends... I stay around Tmn Ibu Kota 5, a bit near to the park .... but i try to stay away from it and walk else where....

Alright, will find my way to TIK 5 during the weekends.

If you don't mind, we can arrange a time for our furkids to meet up as well.

My BB is 4 months plus, very playful, get excited easily too. I hope to adopt another dog but have to wait til I move to a landed house first.

Your house must be very "alive" with all the dogs you have. That's fun, ya.

Guess the media plays a part in making dogs such a "dangerous" species nowadays.

Every article that we read in newspaper tend to highlight the fact that a kid died/hurt cos of attack by stray dogs or big dogs owned by some masters.

Not one article highlight the fact that the kids were attacked because they made the mistake of provoking the dogs.

No articles to highlight the fact that dogs assisted the police, the fire brigade, army, medical practitioner, etc to fight enemies, to hunt criminals, to sniff out drugs, to save human lives, and on and on.....

People tend to believe what they read in newspaper most of the time. If only one writer writes one good story about dogs, and 9 others wrote bad stories about dogs, which one do you think gets to the public? Obviously the 9 bad articles abt dogs...

National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel shows good shows about dogs but how many subscribes to these channels? Or how many actually watch these shows?

For the dog haters, nothing can convince them that dogs are clean, well behaved, good companion, etc.

It never come across my mind that some day dogs might extinct in Malaysia, starting with big dogs.....

Sure, no problem. I won't be in this weekend, maybe next weekend then. Ok? For weekends, the best time is during the mornings coz the sun isn't too hot and hahaha....the kids are watching cartoons. Perfect!

Hope you find the perfect landed house soon. I think my house already too alive hahahah....

I think school kids these days should go for classes where they learn to respect people and animals... Reading the news, it's always a kid getting bitten and always they say the dog attacked all of the sudden. Well, I dunno true or not but from what I have seen near my place, kids tease the dogs first. Once, there was a pack of stray dogs, I was walking my dog and they all followed me... was afriad they might attack so I stood my ground and walked backwards slowly to show them I'm not a threat. Then, all of a sudden this little malay kid came out from my neighbour's house and took a stick and fling at the dogs.... Wow, luckily I was there or I think it would have been another dog attack case. The stray dogs were already growling. I quickly scolded to kid and told him to go back into the house while I slowly walked backwards and avoiding eye contact with the dogs. Luckily, the dogs went of after that...

Alright, will look out for you next weekend then.

Remember the Rott attacked kid story some time ago? It was the kid who provoked the Rott to attack. I got this fact frm someone working with govt.

But of course the media only highlighted tat the Rott misbehaved and suddenly attack the kid. Tat's the kind of story public want to read. Nobody wants to read "kid provoked Rott til attack happens" story.

Not all people understand the psychology of a dog. An experienced vet told me that NEVER ever look into the eyes of a dog, especially a stray dog cos it'll read the look as a threat. IF you are scared, just quietly back off, don't turn your back againts the dog, just move away, but NEVER ever look into its eyes.

Throwing sticks and stones should never be the 1st defense. IF the dog do attack you, do not run off like a mad person, it'll provoke the dog to chase after you even more. IF you are bitten and the dogs refused to let go of you, strangle the throat, just long enough for the dog to let go, NEVER until the dog chokes to death

Things like this should be taught to kids who fear dogs. But no one bother to write a good article on this topic because it does not attracts public to pick up the newspaper and read on. It's always better to sell topics like "Another dog attack", money talks as usual.

I'm glad you were safe with the stray dogs encounter. It's always sad to know that there are people who wrongfully breed their dogs, and then abandoned them on the streets.

Ever wonder why they are so many stray dogs on the streets, but only those nice ones are being bought/adopted to new home?

Yes, I read about that. Sigh... kids these days never learn. They think teasing a dog is fun. Once a gang of kids didn't leave my dogs alone and kept poking my dogs with sticks, evern after I warned them not too. I got so angry, I took my friendliest dog and chased them a bit to teach them a lesson. No one was hurt, but I didn't see them near my home again hahahaah....

The media shoud do their part, work with SPCA and do weekly articles on how to respect animals. I think having some sort of education thing in school would be the best, it'll be compulsary for al the students.

Stray dogs, all by irresponsible owners. People buy and adopt pure breeds coz some like the breed, of find them ok for their allergies or for a predictable dog. Some ah.... sigh... they don't spay their dogs and let them roam about, then later the dog gets pregnant and then the pups are thrown out as strays.. I've seen a few cases like this near Setapak Garden... people there love to let their dogs run freely, no matter how many times I tell them to not do it, they say the dog is happy.

The stray dogs I encountered, were not from TIK, they were dogs from setapak garden. I recognize many strays there... all were males and they were aggressive ones too, bit one dog till wounded. I heard from a resident staying there that DBKL came one day and caught many strays... poor souls...

YYH,

It's like tat, kids only learn when mistakes happened. If their parents didn't bother to educate or monitor their kids, there is nothing much we can do also.

Sometimes I do wonder why no writers write good story about dogs. Could it be, there are writers who write good story but it was edited out at the end of the day?

I heard about the stray dogs, but I seldom see the gang around Teratai Mewah. I stay there.

I only see the gang of stray dogs at Prima Setapak, near the food courts area. It was kinda of scary seeing the gang roaming around, no idea they are safe or not. But I do wonder why there is such a pack of stray dogs.

Yeah, I can understand about the purebreed thingy. My English Cocker Spaniel is a purebreed, but I didn't buy BB from a pet shop. My brother adopted it for me from someone.

BB is on long term fungal treatment for his infected paw nails. He had it before I adopted him. The vet who attended to BB was very upset about BB's condition cos such a young puppy (then one month) shouldn't get this kind of sickness.

To date, I've spent quite a hefty sum on BB's medical condition. BB tend to get sick easily. Being 1st time dog owner, I would say I've been going in and out of Animal Medical Centre so often that the reception, kennel hands and the MDs there can recognise BB.

Oh dear! Think I've run off from the initial topic of this thread.

Yah... a pity they do not learn.

I just came in from my compound. I was watching TV when I notice a lot of kids making noise. Curious, I looked out the window and to my SHOCK!!!! A gang of Malay boys, between the ages of 7 to 13 were outside my house, bullying my lab. My dog is inside my compound, just sitting and staring. Those boys threw rotten fruits and hard berries they picked from my neighbour's bushes. Even my neighbour's dog was also bullied. So angry, I went outside and shouted at them and they just laughed and cycled off. Eeeeeee.... I wish I know where they lived, then I can tell their parents a thing or two about their kids.

Sigh... poor stray dogs... the females get raped and breed everytime they go on heat, pity them. Yah, I have seen a few dogs around Teratai Mewah...

Oh, you adopted your dog? Fungal problem? Poor thing, was your pup mistreated last time?

Read your thread, are you willing to really blow the whole situation up if you are I suggest you write to The Star newspaper telling your story of what has happen and ask for advise, a similiar thing to M.K.A. and asking for advise plus S.P.C.A. if you really wish to cause a stir write one to the local council, in Bahasa Malaysia asking for advise plus one to the State Vets Department. Give them a month to response and they do not you write again to the papers and ask who you can get advise on how to cope. A lot of paper work but it is worth it since these are the parties who talks alot and see if they do alot. However, do note it the park/ground you went to have a sign that says no dogs, you better not say anything at all as you have broken a by-law.

The issue here is not what the boys did or did not do but how to solve the issue with these establishments who are suppose to help.

I don't understand why the kids are doing that to your dogs and others'.

What kind of satisfaction do they get by "teasing" our furkids?

I've written to The Star this morning. I do not know whether the editor will publish my email or not. But I'm hoping he/she will approve my article.

Ya, I've adopted BB from his previous owner. I do not think he was mistreated but the fungal infection was with him before I've adopted him.

By the time BB came home to me, the fungal infection was turning to worse. So now he's on long term treatment. His paw nails will never be like those normal nails. His paw nails are enlarged and disfigured. But I still love him the same.

I've written an email to The Star this morning. I have no idea when or whether they will publish my article.

I'm not keen to write to SPCA/MKA/Local Council/State Vet Dept. I roughly know what will be their replies. I have dealt with govt. bodies and those in authorities before.

BB and I stayed away from playground/parks. We always go for our walk by the road side of housing area. We did not break any laws on the day we were "teased" by those kids. It was them who came harassing BB and I.

Anyway, I've learnt from my mistakes. I won't bring BB to TIK during evening when the kids are playing around then. I will keep my schedule to walk BB in the morning during weekends. Weekdays, I'll play with BB in my house then.

Thanks for your advice to write to newspaper. I've thought about it. But somehow I think my article will be editted out due to "unforeseen" reason.

Good on you, you have taken one step forward and have to wait an see what these people with mouth who have spoken can do or not do. Not sure how you have written to The Star, if it is not a complain then you are half way there, it has to be a concern citizen asking for advise to help, that is the key, need to play with words.

I understand what you mean by play with words. But all articles sent to Letter to Editor column are edited by The Star to suit certain publishing requirement.

Since my issue is sensitive to some race, it might not make it to the printing. The media is here to keep the harmonious ties among races. No way, they'll jeopardised their business for some minor complaints.

I did not write the email as a complaint, but more of a question to the public on why certain kids are all out to wrongfully provoke a furkid to attack.

Maybe my thread in here seems to point out Malay kids are the culprit here, but fact is fact. They are the ONE who go around provoking furkids.

You seem to be a very diplomatic person. Have you written to The Star before? If you have and your article is published, I salute you for that. I think you'll be a suitable candidate to write more articles to The Star to create awareness in our society.

I'm not a diplomatic person at all. I'm always blunt with my words. It gets to some people.....most people I would say.
