Frown hey people!
i went to paws today to volunteer for the next couple of weeks.. ill be there next on monday, about 10 in the morning to around 3pm... will any of you be there? it'd be more fun to work wif more people..

i spent an hour there alone walking and petting this huge german shepherd! scary stuff specially with the other loose dogs always appearing like their goin to attack us when im walking past. :s

plus when i was ready to leave, i was walking out the same way and the same pack of dogs ran up to me and started snarling like i was the end of the world.. yeesh.. freaked me out.. but that aint stoppin' me.. ill be there *early* *cough* around 10am hehe..

would love it if some more peeps could come too.. hehe Wink

i really dont wish to admit it but the fact is the chance of adoption for mongrels are very low. there must be a TRUE & SINCERE organisation who really willing to solve the stray problems. by individual's strenghth u cant move much. but i feel glad there are still ppl out there who really cares, AT LEAST they help this one. I always tell myself too. Smile

well im getting myself up to date with the big happenings since last april witht he new committe and all. i hope there are gonna be changed for the good.

my plans.
in high school, i was the vice pres. of my interact club, there I organised many campaigns and accumulated a few contacts of those 'richer' charity organisations,. ie Rotary, Lions etc etc.. i think we should approach them for help. after all they are the big tycoons and if we can convince then, only the pups will benifit!

all my plans are purely financial, sponsorship kinda stuff. i think (and im really serious) that we should send out letters (not email) actual letters to school, colleges, universitys inviting them to send WILLING volunteers from their interact clubs or leo clubs.

i just graduated from sunway uni college. and during my time there, i led my team of just a few 9-10 ppl all the way to ampang SPCA and spent the entire saturday there. this was part of our moral studies project. actually all the other groups were planning on going to orphanages etc but even the orphanages turned down their visits. but we could really use the help of young college students like these. so if we invite these colleges to consider these sort of outings when planing moral studies or other outings, the workload would be decreased. but only slightly.

notice all these donations are short term. they wont last for long. but if we can approach big big companies like Intel in cyberjaya, or other giant companies which hire mostly non-muslims cuz of the (no touching dog issue) they could send annual financial support and benifit from tax exemption! if each multimillion dollar company sends a mere 2.5k a year, 10 such companies will get 25 thousand RM 25 000 ringgit for us to spend on the animals!!Frown

im not sure if im being realistic, to me this plan can work. it all depends on which bigshots read our letters,Frown who responds, how we phrase our letters. and the pleas we make to the press to help us advertise. i would welcome anyone who's willing to help me do this!

loL the funniest part is that im not even an spca/paws member :) but ill register on monday when i start volunteering..

so whatdya guys think? can we make it work? Frown

so glad that there is such a person who sit down & really think for the animals.

well frankly speaking, from my knowledge, certain animal shelters do receive suffiecient or should i say more donations than their expenses. this lead to corruptions rather than helping the animals.

of corse shelters will give u lots of reasons y they "constantly" need donations, but my concern is: is it true donations is the most important thing for an animal shelter?

well u should ask the shelter, how they going to spend the money. if the shelter going to spend the money to put the dogs to sleep, will u still interested to find donations for them? if the shelters receive lots of donations but didnt use the money to spend on the animals, will this help?

my humble opinion is, the most important thing that we should concern of is the adoption rate of a shelter. most of the animals at the shelters, I mean MOST will being put to sleep due to limited space. thus, if donation is the main focus, ppl will tend to donate money to kill.

well a shelter will always tell u they dont have choice, they need to kill in order to accept more abandoned. but the fact is they need to kill in order to kill more if the adoption rate is still so low.

They can kill all the strays & abandoned in 1 moment, but the fact is as long as there is irresponsible owner, there will be anotehr animal end up being sent to animal shelter the next moment.

it is sad most animal shelters nowadays seems encouraging ppl to dump dogs at their shelter. they might say it is better than the dogs being stray, but this will lead to endless killings since the public are not well informed or educated abt their responsibility. they are thought to be irresponsible instead.

since u r a student, r u planning to start a group to rescue the strays with other youngsters? it is good if u able to educaet public since young. & through ur great relationship with those big organisations, suppose u can get good funding to rescue, not fund those who kills or put the donations through animal's bloods into their own pockets.

by the way, be aware of ppl who seems good beside u, they might be very bad. doing charity seems great, but u will realise it doesnt mean so when u really get involve.

cheers & take care. i will always support TRUE animal rescuers. u too if u r.

Yang

Re: [finnstar] What I think that can improve/increase adoption at PAWS. [In reply to] Can't Post

Frown Hai Filmstar,

This my humble opinion. Killing of course is bad. But think of the consequences of no killing. Wont ithe situation become worse? I squad down and cry when they told me how many body bags they required each month because I wanted to donate this item to them. But we have to face reality with a sorrowful heart.
Does no killing policy help? By the way PAWs constitution does not say it practise no killing. We need to respect that..
In USA, I supposed there are so many no killing animal shelters. But most do not have space for one more animal.Very easy to figure out why. This will bring us back to square one.

So is my humble opinion that you continue to help the animals with your project. Any plan for the benefit of the animals should be well encouraged and not put you in doubt..
My humble opinion - there is no right or wrong for both camps of opinion. Lastly just some people are dishonest with money , it does not mean everybody is the same. We still have many good people out there and everywhere.

Frown sign - pazzeco

Re: [cane_pazzeco & finnstar] What I think that can improve/increase adoption at PAWS. [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear cane_pazzeco & finnstar

Every dog lover's heart weep for those kids that have to be put to sleep.

That is why all of us are encouraged to quickly help in all ways : foster, adoption, pass the word around promote the animal shelters, direct people to go there to adopt and last but not least spay the female dogs/cats.

You can help also by promoting kembiri: the spaying center at KL.

What we do seems to be small, but remember it is the small things that counts also.

I believe all animal shelters have done to their best and maximum and they also need our help in any kind also.

I also often times weep silently and wished i had a million and million dollars to help but the most importan is to go in line with the call of the animal shelters : adopt and spay.

Re: [alfa] What I think that can improve/increase adoption at PAWS. [In reply to] Can't Post

SPOT ON, ALFA!

Of all the things ever written in this forum that hits the nail on the head.

· Neuter your own animals and encourage others to do the same.

· Reduce the unwanted litters.

· Improve our care and appreciation of animals.

· Encourage people to adopt from shelters instead of buying from petshops.

· Support local shelters, private rescue groups and affordable neutering programmes.

Every animal neutered brings us a step closer to reducing the demand on shelters in this country. And every animal adopted from a shelter makes an extra space for another animal in need - less overload, less need for euthanasia ("put to sleep") and an extra life that can be saved. Not to mention that every animal needs a loving home - it's no great favour to sentence a social animal to life in a shelter… Let’s reduce the need and get those animals out!

Thanks for your posting Alfa. Spread the word!

Liz

Dear Liz

Precisely! You have spelled out the simple steps and I am sure the message is clear to all those that will rally to help PAWS or any other animal shelter.

May many more animal lovers combine all the resources, connections, that one has inorder to help to increase the adoption and do all that is necessary .

Of course ideally, none of us want to see any ethunasia and that calls for us to expedite the call to reduce strays and litters.

I will print your post and send to many more people out there.

Thank you for your postings and answers too.

I like your spirit. Let it be contagious all round about this forum. I heard somebody says if you point a figure at someone and accused him or her for not being a true animal resquer , halt and look at your figure- three fingure are pointing at your goodself. Hahaha caught you spot on or rather on the spot.
