Golden Retriver - Eye Infection? Can't Post

Hiya... wondered if goldens were prone to any particular problems?

Our Brinkley has a watery eye, and we took her to the vet, who examined it and then gave us a tube of cream to apply daily, and said it should be fine. We've been wiping her eye daily, and applying hte cream, but it seems like it is not really getting any better, as her eye still gets teary...

It looks like the fur below her right eye is getting into her eye, hence the watering, but it could be the watering is causing the fur to get wet then stick in her eye causing further watering... anyone have experience with this who can help?

Thanks a lot! Smile

i had a pup who got this problem too. her eye was watery as the eyelash was stuck on the eyeball. i applied some cream, clean her eyes with plenty of water and always wipe her eyes. in a few day, she recovered. i also tried to dry up the eyelash so that it won't "stuck" again. well, i think it should be alright in another few days.

Re: [luckey] Golden Retriver - Eye Infection? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

was wondering about the watery eyes you mentioned.. did you meant tear stain at areas close to the eye duct? or purely, wet eyes?

my dog recently had tears at his right eye. the vet said it's because of his stucked eye duct, and we were told to massage the eye duct area gently everyday.

i find that my dog had quite some cases of eye problems. once he kept blinking his right eye. and even used his paw to scratch... i was also given cream to apply to his eye daily - it didn't help. after a while, i noticed a tiny hair grown below his eye (really tiny) poking into his eye - i pulled it out, and it fixed the problem.

the 2nd time was again, he blink his eye. this time the vet said it was due to the nature of goldens who love to sniff around, dig around, poke their heads around - which might end up poking their eye into bushes, twigs or etc - and cause eye irritation. Some eye drops were given, and it solved the problem too.

don't know whether this'll help. just sharing some experience with my dog's eye problem too.

regards,
hunter

Mack suffered from it too in summer, Vet said it's due to allergy....but allergy to what, ar~ not so sure...either one kind of plants. well, managed to recover if the right medication is given to treat the "right" allergy.

Re: [hunter] Golden Retriver - Eye Infection? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi... the eye basically waters, which leaves a tear stain... it doesnt really stain her fur, coz when we wipe it off and it dries, it goes back to her regular color. But her right eye is always watering, and she gets gunk in it- the sort we et when we first wake up from sleep - and because it is wet, her fur gets in and irritates it more. and I cant seem to wipe it dry enough for the fur to stay out of her eye. Am wondering if it is a defect in the way the hair grows near her right eye, or whether the wet eye draws the fur in which causes more irritation.

I'll try what you said though and massage her eye to get the tear ducts moving properly.

At first when she gotit, she didnt really use her paw to try to scratch it... then she did, but now she is like used to it so doesnt play with it aymore with her paw. But i might take her to another vet and get a second opinion coz it has been quite long now... \thanks for your helpSmile!

Hey Jenn,

My friend Patricia with her goldie named Amber, also having the same thing....if i'm not mistaken she told me the eye duct is too shallow or something like that and yes she said the vet told her she has to massage the eye area often and wipe the tears off, else the dog will get tear stains....seems a common problem for a goldie?

when your dog's eyelash was stuck on the eyeball, was this like constantly, or when you pulled them out again it stays out? Coz with Brinkley's eye, they come out when I manage to totally dry the eye, then when it starts watering again, they go back onto the eyeball again... like the eye is a magnet for her fur ont he right eye Crazy

yeah, i think the problem is similar as the pup that i had last time. when the eye is dry, the eyelash didn't stick but when it wet, it sticks!

no dirt, just tears right? i kept on cleaning up the eye and it recovered in a few days. maybe yours will be the same as mine gua.........

good luck (i'm sure she will as the "Luckey star" is just besides her day and night Cool)

Re: [makrawl] Golden Retriver - Eye Infection? [In reply to] Can't Post

Just took Brinkley to the vet this morning, and unfortunately, it's what I feared. It's apparently a hereditary condition, where the eyelid turns inward, causing the hari to stick inwards towards the eyeball, and if we don't perform minor surgery to cut away the lid to reshape it, eventually the eyeball will have so many scratches she could go blind later on.

Feel so bad for Brinkley, but we've booked her in for her operation next week Unsure poor girl. But the vet says she's probably in quite a lot of discomfort right now with the fur irritating her eye... said even when we humans get one eyelash in our eye, we are so uncomfortable, imagine a whole lot of hair which keeps poking into her eye.

Poor Brinkley!

Yeah... we feel so bad for her as well... and the vet said she might need a second surgery because as she grows, her lid may grow along with her... but if we leave it too long, her eye may get damaged from the constant rubbing from the fur going in her eye. Will keep you guys posted, thans for allthe good wishes! Smile

Hi there, yes, very sad to hear about that. But its good that you brought her to the vet and found out about it early. Did you get her from a breeder or can you trace the people who bred her? If possible, you should tell them about it so they wont keep breeding the parents and take them out of the breeding program (if there is one). As responsible breeders, that's what they should do. The parents may not suffer from this condition but they may be carriers. Hope all goes well.

Yeah, I guess we're lucky we know early so we can do something about it before something happens to her eye, which would be worse. Thanks again for your help in alerting us though. At least after the operation, Brinkley won't have that irritation anymore and we can stop calling her Pierrot!

The breeder of Brinkley I believe also reads this forum, so hopefully they will see these posts. I will also let them know when I can, not something they'd want to hear, but better than for them to continue breeding dogs with this condition, and some may not be as lucky as others.

Thanks... yeah she is being so brave about the whole thing. We are still hoping it will clear up by the opration, so that she won't have to have it, but unfortunately I think she probably will.

Came back from Obedience class today and thought I'd home-school Brinkley so she can still take her CGC and she was so naturally obedient! Like she already knew all that stuff that dogs ahve to learn for their CGC without having to teach her...

Thanks for all your support, you guys are great Smile

Just something to share with you....

when i brought mack to the vet for his eyes allergies, he was so pain becoz of the injections, eyes treaments, the cleaning process while the vet and nurse holding him "tight"....... also during the time i put oilment to his eyes, he was in great pain.
Guess what?!Shocked He was angry with me. He closed his eyes and refused to look at me. When i walk away, he opened his eyes .... if i glance at him, he'll quickly close his eyes up, like protesting!!
i kept telling him "mummy love you, mummy help you....so you will get better....mummy sek-sek mah....."
he need to be doted a lot loh.....
then when he got better, i brought him for more walks in a day. I think he knew it...... he will appreciate and be more cheerful.
Sometimes, really feel like a human relationship.Smile

Aww... that sounds really sweet! Brinkley is mostly very good about being treated... can't believe she lets me clean her eye, squeeze gunky ointment in it, and lay so still for me.

But sometimes when she's had enough, she does what Mack does, she just shuts her eye. Then when she thinks I've finished wiping her eye, she slowly opens it, and when I move to wipe it again, she shuts it again and pretends to sleep!!!

And she just loves being brushed... so when I brush Luckey, Brinkley starts making these cute howley noises until I brush her too!

well in breed description books, afghans are described as aloof (cat-like) and also bred to hunt, so they like to chase small animals. But all the afghan owners I've talked to seem to say they are the most gorgeous dogs, so dunno. There's this afghan breeder, where her 6 year old kid was showing her afghans in junior handler classes, the dog was like bigger than him! And one of her puppies grew up to become a therapy dog.

She has to wear her cone for another week and a bit... but she is getting used to it. Still walks into the sides of doors and things, but her eye seems to be healing up nicely. She keeps sticking her face next to luckey's to ask her to scratch for her, but luckily Luckey is still abit wary of the cone!

awwww... I read your note to Brinkley (coz she can't read, her eye quite tired and can't see beyond the cone so well at the computer screen!) and she says she can't wait to see you guys at the APril gathering either! HOpe by then she can have her cone off... she is quite self conscious with it on. Blush

Unfortunately it is not a cool pink... it is regular transparent white plastic Unsure

Yeah, that's Brinkley in the show!

hehe... well not quite... her nosebridge line still there, but she has more fur now so not so obvious from pictures! Laugh But she has grown to be a really adorable girl... but makes use of her size against Luckey! Most of the time she lets Luckey bully her but I keep warning Luckey that she is like 4 times her size! haha

Will be going for the CGC exam with Brinkley today... will you be there?

hi,

well, i think the line thingy is kinda less obvious now after meeting her life-size today. she's grown so big and beautiful! :O

i went to the training grounds today. just to see see, coz there's no exam for intermediate level. unfortunately, i was dragged into the novice's mock trials :O:O haven't practiced for like a month!

lol, hunter did terribly - the first and only dog to broke his sit stay and down stay, and he became a beagle during heelwork - nose on the ground - refusing to move on. anyway, not his fault, all my mistake for being so lazy these few weeks. he's a good boy.

how was brinkley's exam? i'm sure she passed la, correct?

regards,
hunter

hehehe... Hunter a beagle? Mixing too much with CBS's Snuffy?

Brinkley was such a star today in her exam... she missed like most of her classes cos my hubby couldnt take her, but she tried so hard, and got everything right... the only thing is I didnt know that in CGC youhad to down your dog without touching them, and i was using my hands to help her down. So the examiner made we do it again...

she did it second time, but i asked if I could use a treat and he said yes, as long as i didnt actually give it to her..

but still dunno if she passed, he said gotta wait till grad day Crazy well, in our eyes she did brilliantly.

Hey, spoke to Amanda, and she might start agility soon... (hopefuly at the next course) you MUST come to that...

hi,

awww... she's such a sweet little girl!!! my mum thought she was really friendly and beatiful that day at training grounds :D

well, i could say for cgc there's a high chance of passing anyway. so dun worry! she's a good girl and i bet she deserves a shiny medal too like luckey :D

yeah, i've heard! agility!!! not quite something hunter is good at... but i think it's a fun activity. just hope that they'll bring out those fancy A frames, dog walk, tunnels...and also the hanging tyre thingy that they let the dog jump thru.. really kinda fed up of doing only jumps now.

I think Hunter would do brilliant at agility! She's already at such a high level obedience and she can jump! All the other exercises in agility Hunter would do no problem!

Would love to bring Luckey for the agility... she is sooo hyper and loves to jump... the only thing i'm worried about is her jumping off the A frames etc from the highest spot!!!

But yeah it would be cool if they brought out the equipment we can't easily get at home...

As for Brinkley, guess we have to wait and see... but not sure we can make it for the grad day coz might have speaking commitment at another function that day Crazy must get my hubby take her to collect her medal though if she passes. hey, if we can't attend graduation, can we still get the free food and stuff? hi,

well, not quite.. he could only do the jumps. prob. is, he's afraid of height - can't even pass the dog walk. hey, ur luckey can do the A frame? that's really cool! i love watchin' the smaller dogs climb over that - it's pretty cute :D (wonder if a pug could climb an A frame. that'd be really cool!)

dun have to worry luckey jumping off the top. i'm sure you'll be right below screaming and catching her when she does that stunt. hahah.... anyway, since you've manage to get her climb all the way to the top, i think making her touch the contact zone wouldn't be hard. just need more time + patience.

heh, get the free food n' stuff? i dunno.. by the time the graduation is over those yummy food will all be given out. don't worry. you'll still get a free cgc medal and a free cgc cert if brinkley makes it :))

well luckey hasnt done a real dog agility A-frame, but she loves to sit in all thehigh places.. like she wont siton the sofa, she'd rather sit on the back of the sofa (the highest point! talk about alpha dog!) ... ad she likes to clib onto our bath and from there our table top... it is so high, like 3t,nearly a metre, and once she jumped off and stumbled, I nearly had a heart attack!

anyway really want to make grad day coz brinkley deserves to go up there and get her medal and her picture taken... anyway we'll see... Tongue
