Yes and no.

Depending what I want the dog for. If i want a protection dog i can't get a mixed breed the size of a JRT (though i do not rule out mixed breeds for pp work). I also want a more predicatable dog for smth as serious as protection work.

If i want the dog as a pet, then no...as long i like how he is.Smile

I agree with u said..certain breed is better when come to protection job esp pure breed like dobernman, GSD and rottie. Sometime only the look will scare the hell of you. Somehow this dog is born with the instinct to guard..amazing enough what the dog can do,

That is what worries me a lot in Malaysia. Anybody can have any breed of dog, no matter if he knows how to care for, how to train or how to handle that breed.

That some breeds got a bad name here is basically caused by that ignorance and negligence to the breed’s special need.

In my opinion, guard-dog could be any breed. They give you the message that a stranger is coming to your house and you have time enough to call for help. I call that the natural burglar alarm.

PP dogs in Malaysia?
I have seen fully trained dogs (no leash or yelling required) in SchH3 classes, nothing like this ever seen in Malaysia.

In Europe, they tried giant breed dogs as well and it was getting extremely dangerous. Can you imagine a dog of 70 Kg is taking on the “intruder”? The guy must be out of his mind or suicidal to play this role.

Hi, I can see your point. Malaysian buys dogs because they are "CUTE" and that is all. The buyer has no incling what particular breed instints are and when they loose grip or unable to control, the neighbourhood goes up in arms and the breed is condemmned. As you have said, all dogs are good guard dogs all they need is the owner to nurture whatever the owner wants out of the dog, in short train it.

An example of how and what people say to show their ignorance about breeds, the last puppy.com gathering at Taman Tun, as I was working my dog, actually on the way home walking out, a family was coming in with their Afgan and I heard one of the family members commented on my dog saying "Take care that is a killer dog", mind you I was walking her off leash at perfect heel and when we walk pass, my dog did not even look at their dog whereby theirs was pulling trying to get near us. The crunch is my dog is a Weimeraner, not sure which book that person read that say that the breed is a killer breed. Hmmmm, wonder what would have happen if I brought my Dob, probably got the army out to shoot it.

Thanks for the funny story. I was laughing so loud that half the neighborhood came asking.

I tried to imagine the picture when you were walking your Weimaraner in a relaxed heel position and passing by the untrained Afghan dog.

I doubt that this people ever read a book about the Weimaraner dog and I am not so sure if they are able and/or interested to read in the first place.

My experience with walking my dog in public is matching to your story.

Once, I was “advised” not to walk a bear in town (Bangsar) and another time people started screaming to each other to see the Lion. I was wondering if people have really such problem with their eyesight or if they all missed bio classes in school.

Luckily, most people are very friendly. One time, we met a very friendly police force. They did admire my dog and showed us a restaurant that tolerates dogs, really great guys.

I have to said..WELCOME TO MALAYSIA..this is how malaysia act when they see a big dog..well esp your dog...
If you know Bukit Jalil area..i used to walk dog there when Bobby is still a pup....he was so small...as i was walking...well it was dark and Bobby was black..he was so small...this couple jump onto the table as if i brought my GSD to walk..he was so small you can carry him with one hand without any difficulty...

Hi,

Am glad u mentioned SchH as I am a fan of the sport. Yes,we do hv SchH here but it is still a small group. Can come & join us if u want.

"In my opinion, guard-dog could be any breed. They give you the message that a stranger is coming to your house and you have time enough to call for help. I call that the natural burglar alarm."

Aah...I agree. If u want an alarm system, then any breed would do as long it's alert.

lol...doesn't need to be in Europe. Check out the pic. Wink It's frm ur home ground (US if i'm not mistaken right?)

Well,he may not be 70kgs,but he's close.

Re: [PSY,JoeSmith] Do you choose your pets based on their breed and why? [In reply to] Can't Post

IMHO, I cannot blame the owner for reacting that way because it's only natural. She doesn't know u or ur dog.

She's worried about her dog as well "lighting" up ur dog because as lovely as our dogs are, they may be unpredictable. Honestly,*if* for some reason a golden retriever(for example),stronger than man was determined to bring a man down, wht's going to stop him? If it was a cocker spaniel u could just kick & he would fly to kingdom come.

I think any dog, regardless of history, as long as he is stronger than a man or can inflict serious damage, should be handled with care.

As for the killer dog comment, well, weimers are not common in M'sia & most ppl do not have the time to read up on other breeds that they are not interested in/own. I mean..so many already don't educate themselves about the breed that they themselves want to get...

Had a lady yelling at me just the other day," What is wrong with u?! Are u blind?! This is a public place! U can't take ur dog out here!" ....all this while Hazel's chest touching my knee and she was at least 5 ft away frm me.

Haha, should I be more impressed about the strength of the table or the “fierce” look of a puppy?

I have seen that people really react extremely strange, when seeing a dog (however, never seen jumping on the table) – no matter how the dog is moving, sitting or its size.

We were regular guests in Bangsar’s pubs and many people were close to a heart attack when my dog suddenly raised his head. She just showed her typical relaxed “Leo”-smile. I wondered what would happen, when she would growl or bark at them.

Thanks for the invitation to the SchH classes.
I said before that I would not train any dog heavier then men for this. In my experience, it is part of the game, that you will be bitten by a dog during the training (at least at one occasion from one of the trainees) and if this happen to be a giant breed dog …. You will need more then an angel to survive that.
Furthermore, when a dog of this size is jumping on you and biting into your sleeve, then the jump and the force of this bite might cause injury already. I have seen a “flying” intruder. The dog did throw around the guy like a small tag-o-war toy.

By the way, I am a European – nothing much in common with Americans.

Aah...sorry. My apologies, thought u were frm the US.

Oh yes...it's scary. 80lbs shepherds r strong enuf. Imagine a 150lbs one Crazy Some of them can bruise ur arm through the sleeve....n tht's a 80lb dog.

It's even worst when some1 gets their dog pp trained & then does not noe how to control the dog or is afraid to.

I have seen some demo shows here in Malaysia with so called fully trained dogs and was not impressed at all. The dog was not controllable, just the very strong owner did hold him back on the collar and was yelling his commands.

I have no idea what sort of SchH training is provided but the shown result is not what it supposed to be.

The sad part is that with untrained or wrongly trained dogs around, the ban of dogs will continue, instead of banning bad people from owning such dogs.

>>>Oh yes...it's scary. 80lbs shepherds r strong enuf. Imagine a 150lbs one<<<I had a guest who played play tug-o-war with my dog and nearly dislodged his shoulder when my dog did the “kill”. Since then, just patting allowed for selected guests and under supervision from me. Otherwise, they might ban this breed here as well.

lol...tht is unfortunately malaysia's perception of a "protection dog". An uncontrollable nervous dog that growls and lunges at ppl. They want a that would go mad & put on a show.

I am not sure abt that training group either but tht is certainly not us as we have not done any demos.

"The sad part is that with untrained or wrongly trained dogs around, the ban of dogs will continue, instead of banning bad people from owning such dogs." Agreed.

Don’t want to put the name up here but you can find his advertisement in any animal magazine. A sure “stay away” for me.

My father had a mastiff who could take out any men without scratching him and holding him to the ground until my dad gave the release command. No leash, no yelling and doing it when he was “on duty” only. Never attacked any of our guests or anyone of my playmates. I used the dog to pull my sledge and I was just 6 years old.

That is what I would call a properly trained pp dog. However, the training was a little tricky (as my father told) since the dog could damage a lot more then the sleeve during training.

On the other hand, ask someone to take a video and send it to AFV, you might earn some cash with it.

tht's 1 heck of a dog. Instincts very in tune & training even better! Any idea where your dad got tht dog?

Hv hardly heard of ppl having trained their dog this way anymore...usually it's the bark & hold/bite...I'm interested in training a bm using the old way of holding men down as ur mastiff did.
