Hi wendy, you are welcome, I am also learning from Roxy. Actually I am not sure what is her height (bad mommy), but she was 22lbs when she took her final jab (14 weeks). Well Roxy is also eating 2 cups of Canidae twice a day but in between she get treats and food from the kong, she is doing fine and healthy. I do know now how goldens can grow fat as she will still beg even after finishing her meals..hehe. of course cannot give in, don’t want her to be fat lor. Treats can be small, but meatballs? I am afraid she may choke on it. Dog biscuit is good. Try her out first. Give one dog biscuit and put in the kong and show her that u r putting the biscuit in the kong (let her smell the biscuit first) and then shake the kong so the biscuit is out, make sure she is watching you, then do the same thing and give it to her to figure it out. Don’t help her, if not later she thinks u can always help her and she will bark for help, which would be bad. If she is having trouble, repeat the exercise again and let her do it on her own. Once she gets the training, then u can try this, mashed 1 banana, mix it with grilled lamb (u can buy the cheap lamb from supermarket) and then put in the kong and freeze it. Stand the kong on a saucer so all the mixture will come down to the biger opening of the kong when u freeze it. Give it to her and see her going crazy trying to get the treat out and licking it all. normally I will buy lamb shank and I will trim off the meat to make treats and I will give her the bone. Bones is also a good way to keep a GR occupied. Most will say lamb bones are bad as they are hard and not good for puppies but I guess it depends on the dog, Roxy has been chewing on lamb bones since she is 14 weeks and she loves it. We tried with lamb shanks as they are hard and not easy to break plus the bones have marrow which she really loves. We did tried with beef bones, but find it far too hard so we don’t buy this anymore. Chicken bones are a no-no as they easily will splinter. Roxy will have her bones every weekend as a treat. And she will amazingly clean every nook and cranny on the bone. But one point, dogs have natural instinct when it comes to bone, we learned a new thing when we gave roxy a bone. She was never possessive over her toys and food and suddenly was growling when we took her bone away. She did scratch my arms once with teeth when I wanted to take the bone away. But we preserved, whenever she is with a bone, we will take it away from her and then give it back to her and praise when she is not growling. Weeks of doing this, she is now willingly will “let go” the bone when given the command “let go”. Another good kong recipe is blended veggies (carrots & broccoli - raw) + mashed potatoes + lamb small cubes and 1 tsp of canned tuna. It’s amazing when I open a can of tuna, Roxy will stop whatever she is doing and run to the kitchen, sit at my leg and just looking at me with her eyes saying “please please please”. So cute! Eat ur plants? Well that’s a golden, I believe they will chew everything till they are 2 yrs old..haha. always say a firm “NO” when she is about to chew ur plant. Haha, I suppose it’s our culture that we are afraid of dogs when we are young, yes my baby bro is also afraid Roxy will lick him. But after seeing Roxy giving my hubby “kisses”, he was fine with the licking but not on his face. Teach Daisy the leave it command, tell her to lie down and put a treat in front of her. Tell her to leave it and also by putting ur hand over the treat, have ur 2 sons watching this. Take ur hand away from the treat and say “leave it”, if she is tempted to grab the treat, cover it with ur hand. Then remove your hand, say one more time leave it, after that give your release command , it could be “ok”, “eat”, “yes” or whatever u prefer. Once she has perfected this, u can put the treat on her paw, I see that kids find this most amusing. My baby bro has taken this a step further by arranging the treat like “Hansel and Gretel” and making Roxy sit at the end of the corridor, he will first say “leave it” and u will see Roxy’s head tilting like saying what is he doing..hehe and then when he give the command “ok”, roxy will pick all this treat like Hansel and Gretel and he will laugh and very impressed with this. So now the brother is gone back to hometown, Roxy also missed him for a few days. Now ok already. Yes ur children should be involved in giving her food, maybe treats. So next time, ask ur 6 yrs old to give her the “sit” command and then treat her. Is daisy jumping on ur children? U need to teach her “no jump”. GR always like walks. It will drain out all the energy so u wont have a dog with behavioral problems. It’s ok if u don’t walk her daily, just make sure she is getting her exercise. Haha..maybe u and hubby can walk her that late at night, some private time away from the kids lah..rekindle relationship mah..haha I do walk roxy every day with my hubby, he is jealous cause Roxy will walk just fine with me but don’t want with him, so nowadays he will hold the leash and I will stand at the side. One time I didn’t go for the walk cause wanted to watch my movie, then 5 minutes later hubby came up and say she won’t walk, just sit and won’t budge even though he pulled the leash. But I am glad Roxy is improving walking with him. Ai ya..so long already. Hope it helps. ohh as u can see on my avatar, Roxy is now 5 months and sitting in a basin filled with water. her fav past time when it is hot is playing with water. if Daisy a water freak too? p/s – beyond, I hope ben is doing fine too.
