Hi people ... Just some thoughts ... For maximum effectiveness ... (A) Make sure you have right equipment ... use at least a 6ft leash (the lighter the better) when trying to teach "stay". (B) Also - try not to teach "stay" ... until the "sit" command is well grounded. By that I mean, your dog fully UNDERSTANDS the command "sit" ... and even when the leash is fully extended (usually between 6ft to 10ft) when the command "sit" is given - your dog obeys. Once your dog sits on command - say 9 times out of ten ... anytime and wherever ... then continue with training "sit" for another 2days or so - just to reinforce before training "stay". Most difficulties arise because the trainer tries to move too fast. Each command has to be well grounded. Once your dog can "sit" reliably - teaching "stay" is much easier ... Will suggest the sequence for training "sit" as follows: (Step 1) ... Command "sit" with dog near you ... (Step 2) Wait for dog to settle - turn & face dog ... (Step 3) Always facing the dog - assume upright stance & move backwards (slowly) ... (Step 4) When leash is fully extended ... lay down the leash ... step on leash with a foot ... (Step 5) ... Hold When training is broken into steps ... it's easier to manage ... For example: Just do Step 1 to 3 first ... Command "sit" ... dog settles down, turn & face dog, then move one or two steps backwards away from dog (always facing dog, use your eyes to keep control of dog) - If dog does not break "sit" ... Well Done! ... "release & call" the dog to you - praise & treat ... Repeat this again and again ... just Step 1 to Step 3. As dog learns ... you can increase distance between you & dog - until leash is fully extended. Once you can move backwards until leash is fully extended, and dog DOES NOT BREAK "sit" ... incorporate Step 4 & 5. And at step 5, you can slowly increase period of Hold before - "releasing & calling" the dog to you for praise & treat. Once you can do all 5 steps ... you can leave the leash on the ground ... and move even further away while maintaining the hold. Eventually ... you remove the leash ... When to use verbal or sign command "stay"? ... Different owners/trainers, different dogs repsond best to different timing etc ... If you wish you can introduce verbal command at the end of Step 2 - and then introduce hand command before starting to Step 3. But of course - I am not doing OB so, my method may not be appropriate for dogs being trained for OB. Cheers
