Re: [RealityDreamer, hunter] ... Training "STAY" [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi people ...

Just some thoughts ...

For maximum effectiveness ...

(A) Make sure you have right equipment ... use at least a 6ft leash (the lighter the better) when trying to teach "stay".

(B) Also - try not to teach "stay" ... until the "sit" command is well grounded. By that I mean, your dog fully UNDERSTANDS the command "sit" ... and even when the leash is fully extended (usually between 6ft to 10ft) when the command "sit" is given - your dog obeys.

Once your dog sits on command - say 9 times out of ten ... anytime and wherever ... then continue with training "sit" for another 2days or so - just to reinforce before training "stay".

Most difficulties arise because the trainer tries to move too fast. Each command has to be well grounded.

Once your dog can "sit" reliably - teaching "stay" is much easier ...

Will suggest the sequence for training "sit" as follows:

(Step 1) ... Command "sit" with dog near you ... (Step 2) Wait for dog to settle - turn & face dog ... (Step 3) Always facing the dog - assume upright stance & move backwards (slowly) ... (Step 4) When leash is fully extended ... lay down the leash ... step on leash with a foot ... (Step 5) ... Hold

When training is broken into steps ... it's easier to manage ...

For example:

Just do Step 1 to 3 first ... Command "sit" ... dog settles down, turn & face dog, then move one or two steps backwards away from dog (always facing dog, use your eyes to keep control of dog) - If dog does not break "sit" ... Well Done! ... "release & call" the dog to you - praise & treat ... Repeat this again and again ... just Step 1 to Step 3.

As dog learns ... you can increase distance between you & dog - until leash is fully extended.

Once you can move backwards until leash is fully extended, and dog DOES NOT BREAK "sit" ... incorporate Step 4 & 5. And at step 5, you can slowly increase period of Hold before - "releasing & calling" the dog to you for praise & treat.

Once you can do all 5 steps ... you can leave the leash on the ground ... and move even further away while maintaining the hold.

Eventually ... you remove the leash ...

When to use verbal or sign command "stay"? ...

Different owners/trainers, different dogs repsond best to different timing etc ... If you wish you can introduce verbal command at the end of Step 2 - and then introduce hand command before starting to Step 3.

But of course - I am not doing OB so, my method may not be appropriate for dogs being trained for OB.

Cheers

Have to agree...when thing's are broken down,it's much easier to follow and see how it worksSmile

"But of course - I am not doing OB so, my method may not be appropriate for dogs being trained for OB."

I have no idea either..that's just my method which I figured out & modified from books and I'm not competing for OB..so...if it works & there are no negatives..then..it works for me Smile

Re: [RealityDreamer] How to command her STAY! [In reply to] Can't Post

ooh yes. definitely not a pretty sight watching everything blow up ;p

each trainer's technique is different, mine is partly similar with sk's method. i would prefer the trainer to command the dog stay and give hand signal, and turn to face the dog at a close distance. once the dog breaks the stay he will be repositioned immediately.

GRADUALLY increase the distance and duration as the stay gets more reliable - this is the hardest part always (not for the dogs, but for the owners as most people are often too eager to watch their dog stay from a far distance!)

dogs already know how to stay. they just need to understand when exactly we want them to stay :D.

Re: [RealityDreamer] ... Training "STAY" [In reply to] Can't Post

OOOps ...

Forgot to mention ...

(A) When training "stay" with a leash ... the sole function of the leash is as means of retaining control of the dog, just in case the dog breaks "stay" ... And the leash plays no other part ...

(B) When moving away from the dog on "stay" command ... the leash is always slack - DO NOT put any pressure on the leash ... otherwise the dog will likely break "stay" and follow you ...

(C) If the dog breaks "stay" at any time ... go back to Step 1 and repeat ...

Any good dog training book will give you all the information you need to train the basic commands of sit, stay, recall ... down ... etc.

Re: [Sydney] How to command her STAY! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well ... don't really teach tricks to our dogs ... Smile ...

What is most important to us is that our dogs know the basic commands and the rules for living in a house. Such that we can leave the dogs in the house alone, go out and know that we will still have a house to come back to ...Tongue

They know what they can and cannot do in the house, where they can and cannot go, no chewing of books, furniture or wires ... etc. They know how to tell us when they have to go outside to pee & poop. They know they cannot be aggressive to any family member, no food possession with people ... they know the routine, their bedtime etc etc ... They can distinguish between friends & strangers, who is welcome and who is not. They know how to behave on walks etc ...

They know what NO and WAIT means. They know how stay still when being bathed, to allow their nails to be cut, how to stay still when examined by the vet ... mostly practical stuff ...

So - very few tricks ... how to kiss ... roll over ... how to look for birds CrazyTongue ... mostly taught by accident. One of our dog knows how to "speak" on command (sort of) ... but that is about it for tricks.

Cheers

No ... all our dogs are quite well behaved ... and are not aggressive to us ...

I had a little problem in the beginning with a rescue mixed breed ... but that was quickly sorted out and the dog is now very loyal and loving ... Smile

Aaaar ... not all 11 in the house ...

And the number fluctuates ... depends on how many rescue pups we have and how fast they get adopted ...

Some dogs are with us at home ... some are with me in the office ... some are --- well, they are strays roaming the streets, but we feed them in the evenings ... Tongue ...

Cheers

The strays are quite feral ... They know when its feeding time ... and they will respond and come quite close when we call them ... but they still too feral for us to touch or stroke them ... Unsure ...

No ... no collars ... these dogs were born as strays ... and have never had a home ...
