Re: [estkit] Hihy i jus hav my ACS 1mths ago... [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually all up to the dog's personality.. Some adult dogs are ok to adopt too.. But I had tried once and was hell... And my hubby had adopted adult but ok.. So I guess all really depends... But I know to adopt foreigner's dogs are ok... The way they train is good...The one who has to go back to home countries and cannot takae the dogs back... They are all well behave I see.. Fion

Hey Fion...

I own an english cocker spaniel...love him dearly...have taken him on one holiday so far...to pd. thats all..planning another trip somewhere...havent decided yet.

Rusty's got some skin problem. He scratches and bites himself very often. Recently the vet told me that rusty's skin condition is genetic. Its sad. I give him derma Norm now, recommended by the vet. Also i would like to know if your cocker spaniels shed their fur like heaps!! Rustys fur is everywhere. It just drops..i dont know if its because of the genetic skin prob. my mother has sinus because of this and it gets quite bad for her. We sweep the house everyday. Anyway thought i'd just write in. hope to hear from ya. take care.

Re: [githashrieeni] Looking For Cocker Spaniel Lovers [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Githashrieeni, when I first bought my Tasha, she had skin problem, I took her to several vets, 2 said scabies, 1 said not. Confused....Anyway, I stick to the vet which I'm comfortable with his professionalism.

It took nearly 2 1/2 months to fully recovered from the skin problem. First sign was she developed several red spots, the person who sold me told me it was just due to grooming shaver. Later she had flacky skin and like dandruff dropping everywhere. Her fur also easily dropped. Very itchy type.

How we treat her is....Took her to vet, almost every week follow up treatment for the whole 2 months. Given medicated shampoo bath twice a week. Changed her dog food to lamb & rice type, put 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil into her food every meal.
It cost me around RM400 in total on medical bill alone (2 1/2 mths treatment). Luckily I'm in Penang. If I'm in KL the medical bill will be double the cost.

Oh..ya..forgot to mention that we all also developed skin problem during that time because of Tasha's mite.Frown
She is an indoor dog, so we all suffered together lo...Unsure

Wow, I can see such a loving owner you are :)Brionging him to PD so lucky.. Such a lucky dog...
I face the same problem... It comes and go, sad to say... Differnet vet gave me different opinion too... Melesab (forget spelling) a type of shampoo to shower the dog but took really long and we tried so many different thing.. One doctor asked us to use iodin on the affected area. But some doc disagree.. I just clean them up more often and do the best we can until they hea; :(I really cannot tell you the exact thing as just take time to heal even with all kind of medicine given by vet :( Sorry cannot be any help Fiona

Hi GSlover...,

Yeah actually when i bought rusty he had the Flakky skin..like dandruff..the breeder told me that it was because he didnt wash off the soap after bathing him...Crazy. anyway i didnt know. i took Rusty to the vet later on and got rid of the prob. Now he has red spots on certain areas in his body and he really bites...and scratches...i give rusty lamb and rice as well...and i've also tried malaseb...

Anyway vet told me that it may be inherited. Where did you buy your puppy from?

Yeah rusty is also an indoor dog so...when he had the skin prob earlier...i suffered too..we have to wash our hands after handling him.

I shall try putting vegetable oil..i heard fish oil is also good? Anyway thanks so all the information..its good having a forum like this...helps...thanksss

Re: [githashrieeni] Looking For Cocker Spaniel Lovers [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all, do you know any KL service apartment (near Ampang raintree club) for rent just 1 week and allow pet? My friend intend to go down to KL with her cocker, as her husband got to work in KL for a week.

Githashrieeni, don't be panicked when vet told you your dog skin problem is inherited. In fact all dogs carry mites which are invisible to our eyes, it very much depend on their antibody against the mites. When they are healthy, their antibody could fight off easily. When they are weak, then all the skin problems appear. That is why some vets just generalised the statement without further explaination. Some dogs do inherit better antibody from its family tree. Some dogs do not show any skin problem at all until old age.

Well...prevention is better cure. Just need to make sure our dogs have balance diet. Dogs that have skin problem tendency, should be fed with homecook meal. Relying purely on commercial dog food may not do any good to them.

No special recipes, just cook rice with pork/chicken and some vege i.e. carrot etc. Of course without salt & seasoning.

How old is your dog?

Not sure whether is sea-water bad for fur or not. Wanted to take Tasha to seaside, but my friend said it may not good for her fur. Probably need to wash off with conditioner then.

Swimming in waterfall or fresh water pond is the best, but over there lots of malay people, not convenient at all. As long as after 3 vaccin, then ok to go out. Bring towel along for your dog, then shouldn't catch a cold.
