Hi there...

Welcome to the forum!!

Just a couple of questions so that we can understand the problem better...

Have you exposed your pup to other dogs before? Is your dog dominant at home?

Re: [gina33] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello ...

Dogs bark ... all dogs bark ... Tongue ... and barking is not necessarily a sign of dominance or aggression ...

Dogs use their barks (much like human speech) to express themselves ... as greetings, as signs of anticipation ... to show pleasure or displeasure ...

And not all barks are the same ... When we observe our dogs, we soon learn that dogs have a whole range of barks, growls and yeowls ... coming in different tones, lengths, tempo and timbre ... Each bark will have its own significance ... each signifying a different emotional, physical or mental state and used for a different reason ...

When our friends & their dogs visit - our dogs will bark in greeting and this happens everytime - its simply saying ... "Hello, welcome"... And then 20secs or so ... they all settle down to playing with each other ...

But its very difficult to interpret the bark or noise a dog makes without also observing the dog's body expression & posture ... dogs use their entire body & barks to communicate. As owners, it is good that we learn to listen and hear what our dogs are telling us ... knowing doggie language allows us to communicate better with our dog.

Suggest the following:

(a) Learn as much as you can about how your dog "speaks", learn about dog barks and body language.

(b) All dogs need to be socialised. Learn the correct way to socialise a dog. Learn how best to introduce your dog to new doggie friends for the first time. There are correct and good ways, and there are bad or difficult ways ... the good ways (like letting dogs meet for the first time on neutral ground) increases the chances of successful socialisation.

Please do not expect that all attempts at socialising our dogs to be successful (some may be quite eventful), much depends on the temperament of the dogs, the environment and the owners' experience ... If you understand dog language, it will prepare you and help you respond to a socialisation situation as it develops.

All the information you need can be found in a good dog manual or on the internet ... you can also try searching the forum for related threads.

Cheers Smile

Re: [gina33] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Hmmmm...

Usually, a dominant dog is pretty aggressive at home too. .. Tongue Anyway, I think there are a few issues to tackle here,

1. You, the fur-slave should be the leader of the pack, not your dog. Your dog should look up to you as ALPHA, so some training to change this should be done.
2. The command "leave it" should be taught to your dog whenever she starts barking or trying to lunge at other dogs.

A question here, do you play "tug of war" games with your dog? If so, better stop as this will breed more aggressiveness in your dog. A good tip is also to teach the command "give" if you are playing fetch with her. Smile

Anyway, some socializing is good for your dog but do supervise it carefully since your dog is a little aggressive now.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Hmmm.. How come the vet said to tape his mouth instead of using a muzzle?

I agree with surchin, dogs tend to bark because they want to "tok tok"... TongueTongue But my neighbour's dogs are different. Their language is like "Oi!! What you doing, walking all over my territory!!!.. Get out now!!!"... LaughLaughLaughLaugh They will bark and bark at the passing object (humans, dogs, animals not necc car unless it is "paper-lama" guy) and sometimes, even fight with each other in the process... Re: [sun-arrow, ALL] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi people ...

Just a few thoughts ...

To sun-arrow ... Errr ... while most growls are signs of warning ... that is not always so ... some dogs will actually make soft low growls as signs of pleasure ... Our Beagle and mix-breed both make growling sounds when playing or when happy (I know it sounds weird, but it's true Tongue) ...

In the same way, not all showing of teeth are signs of aggression (some are actually doggie equivalent of human smiles) and not all wagging of tails are signs of friendliness (a slower side to side movement of the tail, is often a warning) ...

When trying to understand dog communication ... we really need to interpret the sound or signal a dog makes, in the context of the whole dog ... We need to observe the entire dog ... from general posture to placement of weight, and of course, the sound being made (if any).

For example: I would personally be more wary of a dog that is silent, but balanced (with weight slightly on forepaws), eyes alert, ears pricked or folded slightly back ... and a slight turn of the back lips ... than one that is visibly growling with weight on it's back paws ... The first dog is probably ready to take action, while the second dog is probably more on the defensive.

And while the following may overlap ... there is significant difference between a dog that is "aggressive" and one that is exhibiting "dominanance" or just being "territorial" ...

Convenient maybe, but it may not be correct to lump issue of dominance, territorial instinct, nervous disposition and aggression into the same category ... they may overlap, but that is not always the case ...

In order to effectively recondition, teach or train our dogs to behave in a manner acceptable to human society, we need to try and correctly identify the primary cause of the behaviour, habit and/or response (whether instinctive or induced) that we are trying to recondition or remove.

While a dog that is trying to assert dominance and one that is showing nervous aggression, may exhibit some very similar characteristics or signals, the cause is substatially different ... and we will want to treat and/or train a dominant dog in a different way from one that is actually showing nervous aggression ...

Learning "dog language" will help us greatly ... and it's actually a lot of fun ...

Cheers all Smile

Re: [xyne] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ...

Yes ... most correct ... dogs' eyes do speak too ... but dogs do use their eyes and eye contact in quite a different way from us ... Smile ... For us (and most primates), when we communicate with another person, we like to maintain some form of eye contact ... and we use eye contract to show our attention, focus and interest in the message being conveyed.

For dogs (as canids), it's quite the opposite ... and eye contact can be confrontational or rude ... You will notice that when friendly dogs (and dogs with good command of doggie language) meet, they will avoid making & holding eye contact.

When 2 dogs make serious eye contract ... it's a good time to keep the dogs apart ... when there is direct eye contact, and neither dog backs off ... watch out!!!

When approaching a new or strange dog ... avoid making direct eye contract ... and approach the new dog slightly from the side ... that shows your politeness and your wish to be friends ...

Have fun.

Cheers ... Smile

Re: [xyne] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes ... my error and I didn't explain clearly in earlier posting ... sorry ... Crazy

Well ... I would say ... it is probably a good policy not to make direct or hold eye contract with a new or strange dog ... until you find out how well socialised the dog is ...

Our own dogs, or dogs that are properly socialised learn pretty quickly and get used to the fact that when we (humans) look make eye contract ... it's not a sign of confrontation but one of greeting (dogs probably think is some weird human habit, but they forgive us ... *LOL*) ... And properly socialised dogs soon learn that making eye contract is one way of attracting our attention ... The process of socialisation also re-conditions our dogs to accept basic human behaviour and signals ...

Often dogs understand us far better than we understand them ... Tongue

But as you have noticed ... some dogs will remain apprehensive of making eye contract or holding eye contact for long periods, with such dogs, return the politeness by not forcing the dog to make eye contract.

Cheers ... Smile

Re: [xyne] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

This "looking in the eye" will depend from dog to dog ...

What is safe to say is that ... if not taught otherwise by people, looking or staring directly at each other is considered "confrontational and/or rude" in dog language ... This is easily observed when dogs meet and greet each other ... dogs wishing to be friends will exhibit friendly signals and avoid direct eye contract ...

But often, when dogs live close with their owners - some dogs soon learn that for us, normal eye contact need not be confrontational or rude, and that we owners do like eye contact (primate style) ... and some dogs will over time overcome instinct and not be afraid to look at us ...

But some dogs will however remain a little apprehensive and will still look away when we maintain eye contact for too long or at too close a range ...

Understanding that ... when you dog breaks eye contract, it does not necessarily mean that your dog is ignoring you, it may simply be your dog being polite (dog style) ... and is still paying attention by observing you from an angle ...

Cheers Smile

Re: [xyne] My Puppy Keep barking to other dogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Aaah ...

Well ... not all barks are the same ... there are greeting barks ... barks for excitement ... barks for curiousity ... barks for alarm, cautionary or warning barks ... and barks when doggies simply wish to make noise ... *LOL* ...

Dog language has a whole range of barks for different purposes ... often we need to observe the whole dog to determine what the barking is for ... by observing a dog's body language and musculature tension, we can tell when it's warning barks and when it's a "hello & welcome home" barks ...

So, when you come home ... you dog is happy to see you ... she barks in greeting ... Smile ...

Why does your dog not bark at strangers?

Well, that is another different issue ... Not barking at strangers may arise for many reasons, which may or may not overlap ... Without observing your dog it is very hard to say ... Maybe your dog is not particularly territorial or does not consider guarding territory as one of its preferred activities ... Or your dog may be a little nervous and would rather move away from strangers rather than bark ... Some dogs are so friendly, they don't bark at anyone ...

Cheers Smile

the dogs bark only when they see ppl who r more covered up (with tudungs eg) or indians on bikes..and especially when other dogs pass by... otherwise, they dont bark...even when stranger come to the gate n ding dong wan... they think all who come near the house close enuf oso fren kua.. hmm... so much for guarding...

Hmmm...

That's true.... TongueTongue I think when the sirens or even the paper lama guy comes around (don't ask me, only my neighbour's dogs seem to howl at this... CrazyCrazy), the siren or noise is at a different frequency that we can't recognize, so the dog thinks that the object making the noise is howling, so, it howls back?

Hmmm.... Just a theory I'm just thinking of.

I know that Snoopy will howl if she can't see us around for a while when she's in her cage... Tongue

Yea... I would think that howling is a dog's way of a "long distance call" to other members of the pack... TongueTongue My pup tends to howl and cry a bit last time, not so much now. Growing up already!!

Haha... Snoopy tries to escape by squeezing her way out of the barrier. She's becoming a little fat girl now, so she can't do that any more.. Hopefully, she won't start digging her way out... UnsureUnsureUnsure

Okies ... last one ... then you must do own research ... *laughs*...

Dogs generally howl when they want or need their message to be carried long distances ... howls because of timbre and tone carry far & wide ...

Canids howl to indicate their presence for various reasons ... it's almost like verbal scenting to indicate presence, territory & to find mate ... many theories ... some believe that canids howl when lonely and wish to find companionship ...

Some breeds ... particularly pack hounds are bred for good howls ... a hound on a scent will howl to inform the rest of its pack and owner.

Popeye probably howls because he thinks the siren is a howl and is responding ...

Cheers Smile

Good one!! I knew it!! TongueTongueTongue My neighbourhood dogs don't howl so much, but tend to bark. LaughLaugh

So, we call it "Dog Community Speak"... TongueTongue Sometimes, Snoopy participates in it if interested... Never really heard her howl at sirens, I think she can differentiate bet a doggy howl and a siren... TongueTongue

I think she is being practical. What do I need to bark for? TongueTongue She listens but if she wants to reply, it is a low "woof"... Tongue Otherwise, she can't be bothered with the noise. LaughLaugh

Hi Surchinmy, very interesting. I did my research at 101 Dalmations. The howling is to transmit long distance doggie messages, called the twilight bark, heheheh. Dunno how a blackened Dalmation can be mistaken for a Labrador, though. Maybe bad guys are dumb in doggie movies, heheheh. Best regards,J

Snoopy sleeps indoors at night in her "bedchamber" (cage). She sleeps with me in the afternoon. Sometimes, we fight for space on the couch... LaughLaughLaugh

reading all of yr entries really makes me laugh lah. everyone trying to interpret what does the dog's actions mean. we should find a dog translator lah or what is that gadget that japan was selling that inteprets wat the dog means. that would be really kewl to know what they are barking about. but come to think of, later they keep barking to talk to u and u get to irritated and ignore them, then not good, rite? hehe...
